« Padres Sign Allan Dykstra | Main | Rangers Sign Justin Smoak »
FRIDAY: It's official - Cole did not sign with the Yankees, according to Baseball America's Jim Callis. No matter how you spin it, this is an unfortunate development for the Yanks.
THURSDAY: According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, draft pick Gerrit Cole has chosen to attend U.C.L.A. rather than sign with the Yankees. The 17 year-old did not make the decision because of money or Scott Boras. He simply talked it over with his family and decided he prefers college.
Cole was drafted 28th overall, so the Yankees will receive an additional pick in that range in '09 (depending on which other first-rounders do not sign). The Yanks will have less leverage with that pick, as it will not carry over to 2010 if he does not sign.

lol college over the yankees. things have changed, although i must applaud the mans decision to better himself over money, a rare and noble thing.

Good to see someone make this decision for a change.

And it's even better to see when it happens to the Yankees!

But at least with the way they're playing now, their draft pick should be much higher next year!
(ok, I'm done now)

Ya, if they don't make the playoffs I hope they drop their league standing to 16th best so they won't have to give up draft picks for free agent signings.

I love the ny media that trashed the mets for not picking this guy...brad holt has been awesome so far and the yanks don't end up with their guy. That really couldn't have worked out much better.....

I had the pleasure of seeing this kid pitch...MAN IS HE SOMETHING! There was a gun on him and he was throwing 98 consistently and topped out at 101 a few times.

The last thing the AL East needs is a stocked Yankees farm system. Thank goodness this kid is going to college.

Everything has already been said...but as an O's fan/Yanks hater...HAhahahahahahahaha!
Listen- we suck. We may always suck. but if I can't enjoy seeing MY team win- and hey, we've actually begun to show signs of improvement with our youth/farm- I can take a little bit of pleasure out of seeing the Yankees empire slowly crumble (although I don't take any joy in Joba's injury; I'd rather see Hank and Co. screw themselves over than have some poor kid's bright future put in doubt). Some of my best friends are Yankees fans (I went to school in the city) and I love New York, but I couldn't be happier with the combination of Matusz signing and Cole heading to school. It's petty, but screw it...I've got some taunting to do!

...although...maybe I should wait 'til midnight. Stranger things, y'know?

Well MH, as a fellow O's fan, I must say I'd much rather see the Sox falter. The Yanks, however, are a nice consolation prize.
Posted by: dorfmac | August 16, 2008 at 01:02 AM
I don't know...the Sox don't bother me as much. Maybe I just know more Yankees fans (and know how f'in arrogant they can be). Maybe it's because my father is a Sox fan (from that part of the country...makes for some interesting series). Whatever. Cole's going to UCLA, the O's signed Matusz, and I've got a big grin on my grill (and not just because I'm silly drunk).

I don't know what is worse: Losing out on Cole or Mo throwing a wild pitch in the 9th to lose it for the Yanks. Terrible day.

All I gotta say - 'Don't blow your arm out, kid'.
College coaches are notorious for not caring about what's best for the health of their pitchers. And UCLA's baseball program ain't great.
I'd put good money that he gets considerably less than $5M in 3 years.

Skibolton,
The Mets picked Holt after Cole was picked. They would have had to take him over Davis or Havens.
I just love that the kid picking college over money was the one with the most widely reported makeup problems in the draft.

phelps look like joe giradi his face does this is random but had to be said

I certainly hope that Hank and Hal aren't stupid enough to have just passed on this kid because of money. But it's not just him because they also didn't sign there 2nd rd. choice. They did sign their supplemental choice who by the way is a real head scratcher as nobody had him on their radar and he missed most of last year to arm injury. Meanwhile Baseball America lauds the Red Sox and Tampa Bay for their tremendous drafts while even had they signed those two the Yanks draft would have gone down as mediocre and non risk at best. Wow somebody need to get fired for this. This along with the Int'l. Signing Period farce for the Yanks leads to several years at the bottom of the division. Good news they will have high draft picks, bad news they won't sign anybody good.
