Phillies Acquire Matt Stairs

5:56pm: ESPN's Buster Olney says the Jays will receive pitcher Fabio Castro, who warmed up during today's game against the Cubs.  The 23 year-old lefty has struggled with his control, but still makes for a solid acquisition by J.P. Ricciardi.

12:19am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies acquired outfielder/first baseman Matt Stairs from the Blue Jays.  The prospect in the deal has yet to be determined.  Stairs was designated for assignment recently.  He fills the Phillies' need for a left-handed bench bat (likely taking them out of the market for Mike Lamb).

Stairs, 40, hit .250/.342/.394 in 368 plate appearances with the Jays this year.  He was mostly shielded from left-handed pitching.  Stairs is owed $400K this year and $1MM in '09.

Interestingly, the Jays will now give 20 year-old top prospect Travis Snider a look.

Everyone is really excited to see what Travis Snider can do. However at the same time most tend to think it is too early to call him up.

What a great deal for the Phills! They pick up a great veteran bench guy who can still rake.

Good pick up for the Jays. About time for Stairs goes somewhere where he can WIN!

It does seem a bit early... but oh well, Triple A season is almost over anyways and the Jays season is pretty much lost so why not?

Stairs was classy after this. He only had good things to say about the Jays. He's only owed for 1M next year, so the Phillies got a nice solid cheap bench bat there. Best of luck to you Stairs. Thanks for the memory!

Stairs is always a class act no matter where he plays. Good bench option. Good pickup for the Phils.

Maybe this will give Stairs a shot at a ring. He was always a class act in KC and I was sad to see him leave us. Good luck to you Stairs.

Bah. As a Jays fan, I'm not exactly a fan of this news. Not only would I have liked to see Stairs finish his career as a Jay (just not as an everyday DH), I think its too early to call up Snider- dude spent all of 2 weeks in AAA.

But whatever. The Jays are sucking, so might as well. Any shakeup at this point is atleast a little entertaining to see. Hopefully this early callup doesn't ruin Snider.

ESPN is saying that the player the Blue Jays are getting is Fabio Castro:

BUT, Castro is currently warming up in the bottom of the 8th of the Phillies/Cubs game.

Strange.

Stairs is ideal for the job the Phils want him to do. Good batting eye and still a threat to go yard at any time. Plus, his arm still plays in the outfield corners

Phillies Acquire:
OF/1B Matt Stairs

Blue Jays Acquire:
SP/RP Fabio Castro

My Intake: Great move for both teams... Stairs will help the Phillies by providing depth and a experienced bat to their bench and Fabio Castro can help the Blue jays because he is only 23 years old and he can Start and also will help outta the 'pen... nice move for both teams.. but the advantage goes to the Blue Jays in my opinion because they picked up a hell of a pitcher if he can find his control (like stated earlier)...

Travis Snider is going to be one of those hitters who drives more than a 100 runs when he gets older he is only 20
