« Astros Sign Erstad, Moehler To Extensions | Main | D-Backs, Angels Interested In Eckstein »
Omar Vizquel, arguably one of the best defensive shortstops in the game, is not ready to retire and if he cannot sign with a Major League club in 2009, he'll look for playing time in Japan.
"I've played here long enough in America," he told Henry Schulman, of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I've seen every team, every ballpark. I think it would be great to experience a new league and something new. I played in Japan in 2000 on the major-league all-star tour and I found it very cool - good baseball, good fans. Why not? It's a new culture."
Schulman believes Vizquel's days with the Giants are drawing to a close, but the veteran shortstop thinks he can be a leader for the younger infielders in the Giants' roster.
Once the team puts on a tribute, however, he knows hes probably not coming back.

Quick question for people. Vizquel a HOFer? When Ozzie Smith retired, everyone was saying he was a first ballot HOFer, yet you don't have the same hype around Vizquel. But they're virtually the same player, except Vizquel is a slightly better offensive player and a slightly better defensive player.

Vizquel was not a better defensive or offensive player than Smith. Actually, they were virtually identical players on both sides of the ball, with Ozzie being faster for longer and Omar hitting for a bit better average. Actually, if you look at their relative range factors, Ozzie wipes the floor with Omar, while Omar made an insanely small number of errors.
The reality is that Omar is the AL version of Ozzie and deserves the Hall just as much.

…I really feel bad for Omar at this point, does he have so little to keep him happy in life that he has to stick around a game that he isnt very good at anymore? Little-O, I’ll always love you man and you will stay one of my All-time fav players to root for ~ but its time to hang um up man…

…Without a doubt. The Ballot he goes against might be kinda tough to make him a first-time guy, but within a year or two he will be voted in.

Yeah I think when you're arguably the best shortstop in baseball for like 15 years, as well as offer a little offense and some speed, you gotta be a hall of famer. If Omar doesn't make it in I think it would reflect poorly on voters who underrate defense, specifically at probably the most crucial position on the field.

Omar is a HOF no doubt. The one thing i like about him is he is a quiet individual...and you dont hear him in the tabloids like a lot of well-known players. One of the greatest players over the past 15 years.

the old man just needs to retire. HOF? Certainly. I'd vote for him.
