Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Mariners are taking a "wait-and-see" approach to trades and "will probably wait about two weeks before moving definitively on the trade market."
Morosi adds that the Mariners and Padres have "engaged in preliminary discussions with the Padres about third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, according to one source with knowledge of the talks."
With Adrian Beltre on the DL, a deal for a third baseman would make sense for the Mariners. Earlier today, we discussed an alternative for the Mariners at third, as well as the chances that they will trade pitchers Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn.

This guy obviously hasn't followed Kouzmanoff based on this statement, "Opposing teams have pitched around cleanup man Adrian Gonzalez in recent games, and Kouzmanoff, the No. 5 hitter, hasn't followed with a lot of clutch hits." Adrian had 8 RBI in June while Kouzmanoff had 20 RBI. After a pathetic start Kouzmanoff has been much better.

It's pretty hard for a guy to bat in more than eight runs in a month when he's the only one on the team who can get on base in the first place. RBI's are useless.

Well the point is that he has been hitting better in the month of June then he did early. He hit .257/.272/.465 in the month of June. Which is a major improvement over what he did in May/April. Its all relative. Its about value here, he is likely to be a cheaper option that has the added value of being around for 3 more seasons.

By cheaper value, I meant in both terms of salary owed to him for this season, and the prospect(s) it would cost to acquire him.

bkoke-After a pathetic start Kouzmanoff has been much better.
He is hitting .257 OBP of .271
1 walk in 101 at bats in June.
He has a total of 10 walks in 285 at bats.
Yeah he is looking better than Mar-May but he still stinks and will not net a decent prospect.

Look how many RBI's he had, Kooz was up there along with league leaders in the last month or so going back about a week right behind Pujols and Howard, Fielder ETC. Not to mention his defense is stellar he has only committed 2 errors thus far and has one of the more accurate arms in BB. He is extremely underrated as a defender.
Posted by: Mickeykoke | July 01, 2009 at 11:21 PM
You koke guys keep on saying 20 rbi's. He is batting .231 in RISP. Enough said! He does not have a lot of value if any.
Posted by: DTogo | July 01, 2009 at 11:32 PM
"RBI's are useless."
Right. It's not like driving in runs wins games.
Posted by: bkoke | July 01, 2009 at 11:43 PM
"He is batting .231 in RISP."
Like I've already said he has had a pathetic year. The point is that he has been hitting better lately. No one is saying he's a budding star. Just a cheap serviceable replacement. Some power and solid defense. I never said they would get anything significant for him.

I think I would rather the Mariners play Chris freakin' Woodward until Beltre comes back over Kouzmanoff. Wow.. That guy really isn't very good.
I think even Woodward could salvage a OBP over .280 -- Cripes.
Posted by: thr33niL | July 01, 2009 at 11:50 PM
Yeah he's terrible when it comes to getting on base.
Posted by: bkoke | July 01, 2009 at 11:59 PM
Wow Mariner fans are dumb. have u even looked at our lineup? Kooz would be doing better than beltre if he had a team around him. sad to see him go if he leaves.
Posted by: Partylambo | July 02, 2009 at 12:03 AM
Padres fan are just so grateful for what they have, I guess. Kouz is not a good hitter. A sub .320 OBP is bad, let alone a .271. That is horrendous, put a better hitter in the spot Kouzmonoff was put in and he probably knocks in more runs.

Are folks here really measuring the trade value of a guy based on RBI? I don't know where to start with this one...
Posted by: vtadave | July 02, 2009 at 01:07 AM
partylambo, you my friend.... are a moron.
Better than Beltre, ha! Now that I think about it, your post must have been sarcasm. It HAS to be, nobody is that brainless.

In Kouzmanoff's first full season (2007) he hit even worst then 2009 over April and May. In that year he finished with an average of 275, with 18 homers.
The following season he once again got out to a worst start than 09, and last year he ended with a 260 average with 23 homers.
In 09 he's out to the best start of his career, and he already has 11 home runs. You also have to factor in for whatever it's worth the fact that he plays half his games at petco.
He finished 2007 hitting 273 away, and 276 at home. But in 2008 he hit 298 on the road and 226 at home.
What this data shows is that Kouz has a track record for being a slow starter.
Also if Mariners fans are worried about prospects then they should consider that Kouz was a good prospect some what recently. He hit over 370 in AAA, off the top of my head I believe 372.
However, if the Mariners get Kouzmanoff they'll be recieving a player that's similar, younger, and cheaper than Branyan. Overall I think he'd be an upgrade over Beltre. He at least has potential to be... a much better options than Woodward.

Kouz is a solid defender, and has hit .274/.319/.464 away from Petco. For next to league minimum salary I'm sure he would be useful to a lot of teams
Posted by: bcampy | July 02, 2009 at 08:24 AM
His wOBA+ (park adjusted, think ERA+ or OPS+) is 91. So he's around the average mark. But Safeco is a pitchers' park.
For whoever mentioned Woodward, he put up a wOBA+ of 100...in AAA this season.
Not touching Aumont/Halman/Saunders, I think it would be fair to ask for Michael Pineda or Juan Ramirez (Pineda impresses me more and Ramirez has struggled a bit) and then add in another arm and adjust value if necessary.

Kouz is an OK major league player. He has always struggled to get on base but his bat does tend to warm up towards the end of the season. I don't think the Padres are really going to get any thing great out of the deal maybe a AAA bullpen arm like Randy Messenger or Jason Vargas and maybe a low A ball level arm for him.
Posted by: Steve | July 02, 2009 at 09:31 AM
I meant AAAA not AAA
Posted by: Steve | July 02, 2009 at 09:32 AM
The Padres had their radar on Gerrett Olson when he was a Cub and then with Baltimore when the 3 way deal trades were going about.
I could see a Olson Kooz swap. Padres need pitching and Seattle needs a third baseman. Both players are relatively young.
Posted by: Mickeykoke | July 02, 2009 at 09:32 AM
I don't think the M's are going after Kouz to be a RBI machine. They're going after him because he is available, is a huge upgrade defensively and can swing the bat at the MLB level.
It essentially reduces the impact of Beltre on the DL. The M's are overperforming this year and if they could ink Kouz going forward he would be an economical replacement for 3B. Using the salary diff between Beltre and Kouz would allow the M's to sign a 1B w/ power or a more useful SS. I think the Yuniesky experiment is over after this year.
Posted by: bonzosa | July 02, 2009 at 10:58 AM
I think KT is at it again, I believe that this is just an appraisal and that Kouz will probably be traded somewhere else.
Posted by: hitttman | July 02, 2009 at 11:17 AM
i agree with Mickeykoke, i think the Olson for Kooz trade is a good fit. The padres arent getting any better with the team we have and if we do trade him we could move Headley back to 3rd and have Kyle Blanks be our Left Fielder.
Posted by: padre23 | July 02, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Hey Melonis, would you trade Ramirez or Pineida for Kooz if it were your team? They are #2 and #3 pitching prospects in the M's system, a system that needs young pitching. Ramirez is a potential #2 and Pineida a potential #3. Would you give up Outman or Cahill or another pretty decent pitching prospect for a fill-in third baseman in a season destined to slip down the drain?
Posted by: rudolf | July 02, 2009 at 11:44 AM
Kouz always starts way slow just look at his career splits he is actually a much better hitter as season wheres on, he would make sense for a team that has lots of OBP guys but not lots of pop and can take his strikeouts and OBP. He will give Pads for certain a few good looking prospects certainly not elite though
