Poll: How Will The Braves Replace Chipper?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 3:45pm CDT

Braves GM Frank Wren will meet with Bobby Cox and the team's scouts to decide how to replace Chipper Jones, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (on Twitter). They could rely on Martin Prado, Omar Infante, Brooks Conrad and Eric Hinske, or they could look to acquire a player from outside the organization. Tell us what you think Wren & Co. will do:

Stark On Sherrill, Blue Jays, Harper, Thome

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 2:28pm CDT

There has been a “flurry” of waiver claims on prominent players, according to an MLB official who spoke with ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. Nearly every desirable hitter and reliever has been claimed, according to Stark’s source. However, we can add at least one name to our list of players to clear waivers. Here it is, along with Stark’s other rumors:

  • George Sherrill, who has a 7.00 ERA and $1.3MM remaining on his contract, cleared waivers, according to Stark. The Dodgers can now trade him to any club, as our waiver trade primer explains.
  • David Aardsma, Kevin Gregg and Brandon League were all claimed on waivers and pulled back, according to Stark’s source. If the Mariners or Blue Jays re-expose their respective relievers to waivers, they would no longer have the right to pull the players back.
  • Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told Stark that he’s looking for high-impact players, because the club is geared towards reaching 95 wins.
  • One MLB official believes Manny Ramirez will sign a one-year, incentive-based contract with an AL team this winter. That sounds about right.
  • There have been no signs that Scott Boras, who represents first overall pick Bryce Harper, has had any meaningful conversations with the Nationals about what it will take to reach a deal. The sides have until Monday at 11pm CST to reach a deal.
  • The Twins were willing to include Wilson Ramos (now in Washington’s system) in a trade for Cliff Lee, according to Stark’s sources.
  • Jim Thome already has 15 homers for the Twins, and he could be back in Minneapolis next year. "We'd certainly have interest in him coming back," Twins assistant GM Rob Antony told Stark.

Potential Suitors For Derek Jeter

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 12:11pm CDT

Let’s indulge ourselves for a minute and play a game. Imagine, if you can, that Derek Jeter is not going to re-sign with the Yankees this winter. As hard as that is to do, let’s try to figure out which teams would have interest in Mr. November if the Yankees let him walk.

I’ll spare you the details on Jeter, since we’re all familiar with his track record, but here are the essentials. He is hitting .280/.343/.394 this year with 12 steals in 16 attempts. The four-time Gold Glover restored his defensive reputation last year, when he posted an above-average UZR/150, but UZR doesn’t like Jeter’s defense so far in 2010.

Jeter, perhaps the most marketable player in baseball, figures to reach 3,000 hits at some point in 2011. He’s also as durable as it gets; he averaged 152 games from 1996-2009 and is on pace to play just as many times this season.

There's absolutely no reason to expect Jeter to leave the Yankees, but here’s a look at the teams that would have interest in Jeter if the Yankees do not re-sign him. For the purposes of this piece, we’ll assume that Jeter wants to play shortstop, not left field or third base.

  • Orioles – The Orioles need a shortstop, but it seems unlikely that Jeter would choose to finish his career for a team that doesn't appear ready to contend immediately.
  • Tigers – Jeter would probably be tempting for the Tigers, who have relied on Ramon Santiago and Danny Worth at short this year.
  • Twins – J.J. Hardy is a non-tender candidate after a disappointing first season in Minneapolis, so the Twins could be in the market for a shortstop this winter.
  • A’s – The A’s need offense and Jeter’s track record suggests he would be a clear offensive upgrade over Cliff Pennington.
  • Nationals – The Nationals, who have interest in one big-name free agent, could move Ian Desmond to second to make room for Jeter.
  • Reds – The Reds have a $4MM option for Orlando Cabrera’s services, but would be a potential suitor for Jeter. However, Cincinnati will also be looking to replace or re-sign Ramon Hernandez, Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang.
  • Cardinals – The Cards have Brendan Ryan and Tyler Greene, but they’d surely be tempted by Jeter.
  • Padres – Miguel Tejada and Jerry Hairston Jr. are free agents, so the Padres could let them walk and replace Everth Cabrera with Jeter.
  • Giants – Even if the Giants let Juan Uribe walk and decline Edgar Renteria's option, they could get by with Mike Fontenot and Emmanuel Burriss. But there's a big difference between just getting by and signing Derek Jeter.
  • Others – The Mariners could get creative and move Jack Wilson to a backup-utility role; the Braves could decline Alex Gonzalez’s 2011 option or pick it up and trade him

The Rays (Jason Bartlett, Reid Brignac, Sean Rodriguez), Red Sox (Marco Scutaro), Blue Jays (Yunel Escobar), Indians (Asdrubal Cabrera), White Sox (Alexei Ramirez), Angels (Erick Aybar), Rangers (Elvis Andrus), Phillies (Jimmy Rollins), Mets (Jose Reyes), Marlins (Hanley Ramirez), Brewers (Alcides Escobar), Cubs (Starlin Castro), Dodgers (Rafael Furcal), Diamondbacks (Stephen Drew) and Rockies (Troy Tulowitzki) all have shortstops under team control for 2011.

Christian Colon, the Royals’ first-round selection in this year’s draft (fourth-overall) may move from short to second eventually, but the Royals still don’t seem like a fit for Jeter. Neither do the Pirates and Astros, who aren’t in win-now mode.

Again, it's virtually impossible to imagine Jeter signing anywhere but the Bronx, so this piece is mostly for fun. But if he wanted to test the free agent market, Jeter would be able to choose from a number of legitimate suitors.

Chipper Out For Season; Braves Have Depth, Options

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 10:41am CDT

Chipper Jones will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, according to Chris Dimino of 790 The Zone (Twitter links). It’s a major blow for the Braves, but they should have enough depth to win without Chipper.

When Martin Prado returns from his finger injury, he and Omar Infante can combine to play second and third and Brooks Conrad can continue backing up at the hot corner. Eric Hinske, primarily an outfielder, won the 2002 Rookie of the Year at third and has played there on occasion in 2009-10.

Aramis Ramirez, Pedro Feliz, Wes Helms, Adam Kennedy, Jose Lopez, Brandon Inge, Jhonny Peralta, Ty Wigginton, Edwin Encarnacion, Melvin Mora and Willie Bloomquist are among the infielders who could clear waivers this month. The Mariners tried to engage the Braves on Chone Figgins last month, so perhaps Jack Zduriencik will call Frank Wren to see if the Braves are interested now.

Players Who Cleared Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | August 12, 2010 at 9:04am CDT

This is a running list of players who have cleared waivers, based on published reports.  Once a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any team (barring a no-trade clause).  This list can always be found in the sidebar under MLBTR Features.

Updated 8-31-10 at 3:50pm.

  • Carlos Beltran, Mets – It's no surprise that Beltran cleared waivers given his massive salary and poor performance since returning from a knee operation. Beltran, who has a no-trade clause, earns $18.5MM this year and the same amount in 2011.
  • Geoff Blum, Astros - The veteran infielder could appeal to teams looking for a utilityman. He has played every infield position in 2010.
  • Dave Bush, Brewers – Bush could provide value as a starter or swingman on a team in need of some innings.
  • Craig Counsell, Brewers – Like Blum, Counsell is versatile enough to play second, third or short.
  • Edwin Encarnacion, Blue Jays – The third baseman has another year of arbitration left, makes a total of $4.75MM this season and has a .305 OBP.
  • Brad Hawpe, Rockies – Hawpe has played a few games at first base this year and can also patrol right. His homer total is down, but he's still a decent hitter.
  • Kelly Johnson, Diamondbacks – Johnson is having a career year and makes just $2.35MM, but the D'Backs aren't anxious to move him.
  • Adam LaRoche, Diamondbacks – LaRoche is hitting well this year and has a history of second-half success. The Red Sox, White Sox or Rays could have interest.
  • Lyle Overbay, Blue Jays – Overbay hits free agency this winter, but doesn't project to be a ranked free agent, so if the Blue Jays want to obtain something for him, now is their chance. Overbay has a no-trade clause.
  • George Sherrill, Dodgers – Sherrill makes $4.5MM this year and has a lofty ERA, so he cleared waivers, as expected.
  • Brian Tallet, Blue Jays – The southpaw might not have been a big enough name to draw a waiver claim, but he should draw some trade interest. After all, left-handed hitters have just a .474 OPS against Tallet.

Lyle Overbay Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 8:58am CDT

Lyle Overbay cleared waivers, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The first baseman has about $2MM remaining on his contract and can veto any trade according to a July report from Morosi.

The Blue Jays didn't approach Overbay about deals in July, but that could change this month. Injuries to Carlos Pena and Kevin Youkilis could mean the Rays and/or Red Sox have interest. The Rays could get Pena back soon and the Red Sox have another former Blue Jays first baseman – Carlos Delgado – in the minors, but Overbay could be a consideration for both clubs.

The 33-year-old has hit .250/.329/.422 for the season with 13 homers. He isn't projected to qualify as a Type A or B free agent after the season, so draft pick compensation wouldn't be a factor for the Blue Jays in any trade.

Cubs May Continue Trading

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 8:40am CDT

The Cubs have already traded Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot, but they may not be done yet. Yesterday’s deal could actually be a precursor to more moves in August.

''It's hard to say if it'll be the last one,'' assistant GM Randy Bush told the Chicago Sun-Times. ''Anything that we can do that we feel is to the betterment of the organization we're going to continue to look at.''

Jeff Baker, Kosuke Fukudome and Xavier Nady could be traded this month. Fukudome makes $13.5MM next year, so his contract would clear waivers. Nady, who has just under $1MM remaining on his contract this year, could also be traded. He drew some interest from the Rangers back in July.

Potential Suitors For Victor Martinez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 12, 2010 at 8:00am CDT

Joe Mauer nearly became the prize of the 2010-11 offseason, but $184MM later, he’s a Twin for the foreseeable future and Victor Martinez is likely to be the most coveted free agent backstop of the winter. He’s hitting .281/.337/.461 with ten homers. Those are good numbers for a catcher, yet Martinez has averaged higher on base percentages and slugging averages in his nine-year career.

Some say Martinez is a first baseman masquerading as a catcher, but for the purposes of this piece, let’s assume that V-Mart’s representatives market him as a catcher. Admittedly, Martinez has thrown out just 19% of would-be base stealers this year (23% in his career), but he has been behind the plate for years, so teams can comfortably rely on him to catch, at least for a few seasons.

Here’s an early look at potential suitors for the four-time All-Star. Let’s keep in mind that one trade or injury could change this picture considerably:

  • Red Sox – The Red Sox have Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but they’ve seen what V-Mart can do and may offer him a long-term deal. Martinez told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio that the Red Sox have yet to offer him an extension (Twitter link).
  • Tigers – The Tigers have money coming off the books and Gerald Laird is a free agent. Alex Avila could take on a larger role if the Tigers decide to spend their money on others.
  • White Sox – Tyler Flowers is the heir apparent to A.J. Pierzynski, right? The 24-year-old has a respectable .223/.332/.450 in Triple A, so he may be ready for the majors. The White Sox are not a likely destination for V-Mart, but I don’t want to be the one to rule them out.
  • Rangers – The luster has worn off Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez to an extent and Bengie Molina and Matt Treanor hit free agency after the season. The Rangers could turn things over to Teagarden and Ramirez for 2011, or perhaps the new ownership group will make V-Mart a competitive offer.
  • Mariners – The M’s figure to give Adam Moore the chance to translate his minor league success into major league production, but Moore hasn’t fully adjusted to big league pitching yet.
  • Mets – The Mets, who have a habit of spending big on free agents, could pursue Martinez if they don’t completely believe in the combination of Omir Santos and Josh Thole.
  • Reds – Ramon Hernandez and Ryan Hanigan are hitting well, but the former hits free agency after the season and the latter has never been an MLB starter for a full season. The Reds may look to bring back Hernandez and spend on an impact outfielder or veteran starter instead.
  • Brewers – The Brewers figure to spend on pitching, not catching, especially since George Kottaras is hitting pretty well and Jonathan Lucroy should be a contributor.
  • Padres –  The Padres could ask Nick Hundley to play every day (Yorvit Torrealba has a $3.5MM mutual option), but San Diego does have financial flexibility for 2011. Will GM Jed Hoyer use it to acquire V-Mart? Probably not.
  • Dodgers – Russell Martin is an offseason trade candidate, so the Dodgers could be in the market for a catcher this winter.

One factor for all of those teams to consider: V-Mart currently projects as a Type A free agent, so he’ll cost a top draft pick if the Red Sox offer arbitration (as expected) and he turns it down.

The Yankees (Jorge Posada), Orioles (Matt Wieters), Blue Jays (J.P. Arencibia), Indians (Carlos Santana), Twins (Joe Mauer), Angels (Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis), A’s (Kurt Suzuki), Braves (Brian McCann), Phillies (Carlos Ruiz), Nationals (Ivan Rodriguez, Wilson Ramos), Cardinals (Yadier Molina), Astros (Jason Castro), Cubs (Geovany Soto), Pirates (Ryan Doumit, Chris Snyder), Giants (Buster Posey), Rockies (Chris Iannetta, Miguel Olivo) and Diamondbacks (Miguel Montero) all have legitimate big league catchers under team control for 2011.

The Rays, Royals, Marlins don’t figure to spend big on a catcher this winter, but V-Mart should still draw plenty of interest. The Red Sox, Tigers and Mets appear to be the most realistic potential suitors at this point.

Odds & Ends: White Sox, Olsen, Adam, V-Mart

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 11, 2010 at 9:26pm CDT

Another round of links for Wednesday, as Cliff Lee falls short of eight innings for the first time in two months…

  • The White Sox are cautiously optimistic about signing the team's top remaining unsigned picks, amateur scouting director Doug Laumann told MLB.com's Scott Merkin.
  • Scott Olsen made $250K in incentives for starting his 11th game of the season tonight, according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post (Twitter link).
  • 2010 draftee Jason Adam is close to signing with the Royals, according to Daniel Paulling of the Kansas City Star. Adam, ranked by Baseball America as the 54th-best prospect in this year’s draft awaits approval from the commissioner’s office.
  • Victor Martinez told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio that the Red Sox have not offered him an extension (Twitter link). The catcher hits free agency after the season.
  • The Yankees agreed to sign third-rounder Rob Segedin for a $377K bonus, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. Segedin, a third baseman, receives about $100K more than MLB’s recommended bonus for his slot.
  • Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News explains why he believes the Rangers shouldn't try to sign Cliff Lee long-term just yet. It's probably a moot point, since Lee seems destined to reach the open market.
  • MLB owners and executives approved the sale of the Rangers to the group led by Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (on Twitter). The final vote occurs tomorrow.
