AL Central Notes: Cuddyer, Indians, White Sox

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 28, 2011 at 9:20pm CDT

The Twins finish the season with 99 losses, their most since 1982, and will officially select second in next year’s draft. Here's a sampling of links from the AL Central on the night that Minnesota avoided loss #100:

  • Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com that he'd like to have free agents Michael Cuddyer and Joe Nathan back in 2012 (Twitter links). MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes examined Cuddyer's free agent stock earlier in the month.
  • The Indians announced that Sandy Alomar Jr. will become the club's bench coach in 2012. Tim Tolman, who was Manny Acta's bench coach this year, will transition into another role because of health reasons.
  • White Sox GM Kenny Williams told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times that he "absolutely" has a preferred candidate to succeed Ozzie Guillen as manager. Alomar Jr., Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and even Red Sox manager Terry Francona are candidates for the job, according to Van Schouwen.
  • The White Sox wanted Logan Morrison from the Marlins for Guillen, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Chicago relented because the Marlins were prepared to offer Bobby Valentine the job if they didn't get Guillen (Twitter link).

Kenny Williams must be high. Ozzie Guillen for Logan Morrison? This guy must think he’s playing MLB2k11 on xbox or something. That deal probably wouldn’t even work if Ozzie was still playing.

He is doing what GMs are supposed to do, try and get the best deal for his team. Of course he asked about LoMo. Its well known that he has had issues with the Marlins.

That’s great…he had issues with the Marlins. What does that have to do with expecting him as a return for Ozzie Guillen, A MANAGER. Come on, we sent you two bums from the minors who had extremely disappointing seasons. There are few players the Sox could offer as fair compensation for LoMo

    Can’t hurt to ask.

Sure I mean I could always ask Donald Trump if he would be willing to trade Trump Towers for a timeshare in Orlando, and it won’t hurt….but it is a waste of everyone’s time.

Don’t blame Francona because the Red Sox sucked in September.

With the #2 overall pick I wonder if the Twins will pass on a power pitcher like they always have for a pitch to contact pitcher. Hope they do, that strategy really works in October.

It really works in October? The Twins are 2-13 in their last 15 postseason games. They got swept their last 3 appearances.

Nah, their pitching is fine.  What they really could use is another slap hitter outfielder who will sign for third round money.  Aces just cost too much.
