Minor Moves: Fossum, Sanchez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 1, 2012 at 9:22pm CDT

Here's where we'll keep track of the day's minor moves…

  • The Orioles have agreed to sign left-hander Casey Fossum to a minor league deal, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun tweets. Fossum, 34, last pitched in the Major Leagues with the 2009 Mets. He spent the 2010 season in Japan, before posting a 6.56 ERA in 35 2/3 innings at Triple-A in 2011. Orioles general manager Dan Duquette selected Fossum in the first round of the 1999 draft when he was Boston's GM.
  • Astros infielder Angel Sanchez cleared waivers and will be a non-roster invitee at Spring Training, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart tweets. The 28-year-old appeared in 110 games for the Astros in 2011, playing shortstop, second and third. He posted a .240/.305/.285 line in 328 plate appearances, and the Astros designated him for assignment last week.

Wait, you mean NO ONE wanted a below average and no power hitting shortstop that can’t play defense? Blasphemy!

Sanchez hit .280 in 2010, and even last year when he was injured for a 1/3 of the year and hit .240, he did have several clutch hits.   He doesn’t have great range or arm, but whatever he gets to, he doesn’t make errors.   He also gives it 100% effort.   I’m not advocating that he is a starter, but I think he could make a good reserve if he has a solid spring.

White Sox need a backup infielder…in fact, I’m pretty sure they are the one team without a major league signing so far this off-season

If Sanchez is available at the end of spring, he’s a good backup.  Plays second, short, and third.

Tyler Kuhn was given a spring invite.  He’s moved around the field in the minors.

I feel for you on Fossum. Hard to believe he was once one of The Duke’s pride and joy top prospects with boston… how times have changed.. he never did amount to much on “the scene” but The Due it looks like is another team going to give him yet another look.

Hey he pitched well in 4 innings for the mets in 2009.

Fossum? Last pitched to a 6.56 ERA? Now, THIS I clearly do not understand.

    Go O’s!

oh right, i forgot how much AAA stats affected the big league club

but really, this move means nothing, he might not even crack the big league club all season, even with injuries to the big league club.

I am an O’s apologist. I will admit I drink the Kool-aid, but these moves are really starting to get even me. I think we have acquired enough pitching to staff the the AA and AAA levels as well as the parent club. I think it’s time to look for some quality as well as quantity. A 6 something ERA at the minor league level does not sound like it will translate to an improvement at the ML level to me. You? I’m just hoping that we find dome real help and not just filler. A former Red Sox signed by Duq does not necessarily translate to that help. Go O’s!

I can’t wait to see him dominate hitters with his patented “Fossum Flip”.

Why stop there? I hear Izzy Alcantara is out looking for a job. Still one of the best baseball fights I’ve ever seen..

I do recall MVP 04 giving Fossum an A for potential on the XBox.
