Quick Hits: Dodgers, Reds, Greinke

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 7:39pm CDT

On this date two years ago Roy Halladay pitched the 20th perfect game in MLB history. The Phillies placed Halladay on the disabled list with a right lat strain today and he could miss up to two months. Here are today's links…

  • The Dodgers don’t appear to have interest in recently-released right-hander Jason Marquis, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets. The Dodgers don’t expect Ted Lilly to miss more than a few starts, according to Crasnick.
  • John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer suggests the Reds are likely looking for a left-handed bench bat.
  • Extension talks between Zack Greinke and the Brewers are relatively quiet, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. Greinke is on track to hit free agency after the season and could draw trade interest midseason if the Brewers are out of contention.

Padres To Sign Jason Marquis

By Mike Axisa | May 29, 2012 at 6:37pm CDT

The Padres will sign Jason Marquis to a minor league contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). San Diego has four starters on the disabled list and needs to replace the depth. He's an ACES client.

Marquis, 33, posted an 8.47 ERA with more walks (14) than strikeouts (12) in seven starts and 34 innings for Minnesota this season, but just last year he pitched to a 4.43 ERA in 132 innings for the Nationals and Diamondbacks. The Padres only have to pay Marquis the pro-rated portion of the $480K league minimum with the Twins picking up the rest of his $3MM salary.

Cory Luebke (Tommy John surgery) and Dustin Moseley (shoulder surgery) are both out for the season while Joe Wieland and Tim Stauffer are expected back from their elbow issues sometime this summer.

Twins Return Erik Komatsu To Nationals

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 4:53pm CDT

The Twins have returned Rule 5 selection Erik Komatsu to the Nationals, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports (on Twitter). The Twins designated the outfielder for assignment two days ago after claiming him from the Cardinals. The Nationals confirmed the move and noted that Komatsu will be assigned outright to Triple-A (Twitter link).

The Cardinals selected Komatsu from the Nationals in last winter's Rule 5 draft. Komatsu appeared in 30 total games this year, playing all three outfield positions and posting a .216/.293/.216 batting line. He has a .302/.389/.434 line in four seasons as a minor leaguer.

AL East Notes: Matsui, Jones, Encarnacion

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 4:30pm CDT

The Rays announced that they added Hideki Matsui to their active roster today, optioning Stephen Vogt to Triple-A and transferring Brandon Guyer to the 60-day disabled list in corresponding moves. Here are some items of interest from the AL East…

  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports explains that Adam Jones’ new extension is about Jones the person, not just Jones the center fielder. The Orioles signed Jones to a six-year, $85.5MM deal last week.
  • The Blue Jays aren’t currently discussing an extension with the representatives for Edwin Encarnacion, Morosi reports (on Twitter). The Wasserman Media Group client is on track to hit free agency after the season.
  • The Blue Jays announced that they optioned Eric Thames to Triple-A. Thames, the Opening Day left fielder, returns to the minors and infielder Mike McCoy takes his place on Toronto’s active roster.
  • Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal suggests it wouldn't be surprising if the Red Sox moved to extend Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the next few months. The hot-hitting catcher will be arbitration eligible for the third and final time this coming offseason and can expect a raise from his current $2.5MM salary.
  • Here's a look at the 2013 contract issues facing the AL East teams: Red Sox, Orioles, Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays.

Rangers To Sign Roy Oswalt

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 3:30pm CDT

The Rangers have agreed to sign Roy Oswalt, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports. The right-hander will earn a guaranteed $5MM salary plus $1MM in incentives, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). The Rangers required ownership approval to sign Oswalt, a Bob Garber client.

Roy Oswalt - Phillies (PW)

The Rangers stayed in contact with Oswalt this past offseason, but didn't have an opening in their rotation at the time and none of his other suitors locked him up. Once Neftali Feliz hit the disabled list, an opening emerged in the rotation and GM Jon Daniels struck. Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan and pitching coach Mike Maddux appear to have helped convince Oswalt to pitch in Texas.

Oswalt made 23 starts and completed 139 innings for the Phillies last year, posting a 3.69 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 2.1 BB/9 and a 45.1% ground ball rate. However, the 34-year-old's average fastball velocity dropped to 91.4 mph, and he had two back-related stints on the disabled list.

If the Rangers have five healthy starters when Feliz returns from the disabled list, they could use him out of the bullpen and rely on a rotation of Oswalt, Yu Darvish, Colby Lewis, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison.

Mets Designate Manny Acosta For Assignment

By Zachary Links | May 29, 2012 at 2:51pm CDT

TUESDAY: The Mets made the move official (on Twitter).

MONDAY: The Mets will designate reliever Manny Acosta for assignment tomorrow, a baseball official told Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter).  The move will create roster space for fellow right-hander Chris Schwinden.

Acosta, 31, served up a three-run homer to the Phillies this afternoon to raise his ERA to 11.86 with 9.4 K/9 and 6.1 BB/9.  In six big league seasons, Acosta owns a 4.13 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 for the Mets and Braves.

Yankees Claim Ryota Igarashi

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 2:11pm CDT

The Yankees claimed right-hander Ryota Igarashi from the Blue Jays, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports (Twitter links). The Yankees transferred right-hander Brad Meyers to the 60-day disabled list to create 40-man roster space for Igarashi, who will report to Triple-A.

The Blue Jays designated Igarashi for assignment on Sunday after he appeared in two games earlier in the weekend. The 33-year-old allowed four earned runs in one total inning with the Blue Jays, who acquired him from the Pirates at the end of Spring Training. He had singed with Pittsburgh during the offseason, but didn't make their Opening Day roster.

Magglio Ordonez To Retire

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 1:11pm CDT

Magglio Ordonez - Tigers (PW)

Magglio Ordonez will announce his retirement this Sunday at Comerica Park, the site of the defining moment of his 15-year career. Ordonez, who hit a walk-off home run to end the 2006 ALCS and send the Tigers to the World Series, spent the last seven seasons of his career playing in Detroit.

Ordonez suffered a fractured ankle during last year's ALCS, his second such injury in as many seasons. The 38-year-old expressed interest in playing in 2012 and the Athletics appeared to have some interest, but he never signed a deal.

Ordonez retires with 294 home runs and a .309/.369/.502 batting line in 1848 games over the course of 15 seasons with the White Sox and Tigers. The six-time All-Star won the 2007 American League batting title and three Silver Slugger awards. Ordonez, a longtime Scott Boras client, earned more than $133MM in his career, according to Baseball-Reference.

Roy Oswalt Rumors: Tuesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 29, 2012 at 12:52pm CDT

There’s an expectation that Roy Oswalt will agree to sign with an MLB team this week, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). The Rangers, Orioles, Red Sox, Phillies and Dodgers have all been linked to the free agent right-hander in recent weeks. We'll keep track of today's Oswalt rumors right here with the most recent updates up top:

  • The Rangers are actively engaged in negotiations with Oswalt, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The Rangers definitely want to sign the right-hander, a team official told Nightengale. The Dodgers have renewed interest with Ted Lilly on the disabled list and plan to discuss a possible deal. Oswalt seeks $5-7.5MM.
  • The Rangers would need approval from ownership to sign Oswalt since the team is over-budget, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). There are mixed opinions about Oswalt in the Texas front office. Ownership approval appears to be the lone roadblock preventing the Rangers from signing Oswalt, Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi write.
  • Baseball officials are convinced Oswalt will sign with the Rangers, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports. The right-hander has given teams indications that he prefers the Rangers over other clubs. "I would be shocked if he doesn't go to Texas,'' one of Crasnick’s sources said. "A team is going to have to greatly outbid Texas to keep him from going there.''
  • The Rangers could use Oswalt now that Neftali Feliz is on the disabled list. The Orioles are known to be seeking pitching and their division rivals, the Red Sox, have endured the struggles of Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard. Phillies starters are dealing with injuries and the Dodgers actually made Oswalt an offer earlier this year.
