Blue Jays Claim Tommy Hottovy

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 10, 2013 at 1:33pm CDT

The Blue Jays claimed left-hander Tommy Hottovy off of waivers from the Rangers, the teams announced. The Rangers had designated the 31-year-old for assignment on Monday to create roster space for Lance Berkman.

The Rangers acquired Hottovy from Kansas City in November for a player to be named later or cash considerations. He appeared in nine MLB games with the Royals this past season, but spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he posted a 2.52 ERA with 11.0 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 50 innings. The Blue Jays designated Chad Beck for assignment to create roster space for Hottovy.

Nationals Sign Ross Ohlendorf

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 10, 2013 at 1:05pm CDT

The Nationals signed right-hander Ross Ohlendorf to a minor league contract, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports (on Twitter). Williams & Connolly represents Ohlendorf.

The 30-year-old pitched 48 2/3 innings for the 2012 Padres, but posted a 7.77 ERA. He started nine games for San Diego and appeared in four more as a reliever, posting 7.2 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. Ohlendorf was a fixture in the Pirates' rotation from 2009-10, but Pittsburgh released him in December of 2011.

Examining The Market For Right-Handed Relief

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 10, 2013 at 9:32am CDT

It’s possible to group players in any number of ways — age, position and contract status to name a few. Like every player, Rafael Soriano falls into a number of categories. In the past month or so, he has often been grouped along with Michael Bourn and Kyle Lohse, since all three Scott Boras clients declined qualifying offers earlier in the winter. They're now the only three free agents linked to draft pick compensation.

While that’s a useful way of viewing Soriano, looking at him through another prism provides additional context. At a basic level, he’s a right-handed reliever. And, as MLBTR’s Free Agent Tracker shows, there’s an abundance of right-handed relief available in free agency, even as Spring Training draws closer. Admittedly Soriano just had a tremendous season, and he’s the top reliever available. Boras will surely remind general managers and owners of those facts in the coming weeks.

That said, the market for right-handed relievers doesn’t seem robust at this stage in the winter. There are lots of options out there and, seemingly, few teams looking to spend aggressively on them. That dynamic impacts everyone, Soriano included. Here’s a look at the latest rumors surrounding some of the second-tier right-handed relievers available. I’ve added the latest rumors when possible, though some of these players have had a quiet few months…

  • Jose Valverde – There’s been little reported interest in Valverde, who won’t be back in Detroit. His playoff struggles appear to have compromised his leverage.
  • Brian Wilson – Many teams have expressed interest in Wilson. He’s now rehabbing and is closer to throwing off a mound.
  • Kyle Farnsworth – It’s been a quiet offseason for Farnsworth rumors, but he has been linked to the Rays and Brewers.
  • Francisco Rodriguez – There’s been no reported interest in the free agent reliever this offseason.
  • Jon Rauch – Only the Brewers have been linked to Rauch this winter.
  • Brandon Lyon – There’s been no reported interest in the Meister Sports Management client.
  • Matt Capps – The Twins declined a 2013 option for Capps, and since then it’s been quiet.
  • Chad Durbin – The 35-year-old has drawn interest from teams including the Braves this offseason.
  • Mark Lowe -  The Dodgers, Giants, Brewers, Angels, and Rays inquired on Lowe, who’s younger than most free agents at 29 years old.

While some or all of these players could be drawing interest that hasn’t been reported, the market seems quiet. In this context, ACES, the agency that brought Brandon League and the Dodgers together early in the offseason, has additional reason to be quite pleased with its three-year, $22.5MM deal.

GM Notes: Cherington, Rizzo, Colletti

By Daniel Seco 2 | January 10, 2013 at 12:05am CDT

Let's catch up on the latest stories and happenings taking place in front offices from around the league…

  • Red Sox GM Ben Cherington spoke to Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio about the status of free agent Mike Napoli and where the slugger stands with the team. Cherington told Bowden (via Twitter) that Boston is still looking to add offense to the first base position as the club still considers Napoli to be a free agent. He added that the Red Sox will continue to work through the issues of signing Napoli but admits there is no deal at this point (on Twitter).
  • Nationals GM Mike Rizzo faces the task of improving a 98-win team this offseason and recently took a break from the action to chat with MLB.com's Bill Ladson on the state of Nationals baseball. Rizzo points to the young, talented players on his roster taking the proverbial "next step" as one of the factors for the team's continued success in 2013.
  • Dodgers GM Ned Colletti's major concern for his roster isn't about adding more pieces but rather making sure players are fully recovered from various injuries before Spring Training starts, writes Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. "We're fine right now if we come into camp, we're in a good spot," Colletti said.

Minor Moves: Tanaka, Corpas, Mann

By Daniel Seco 2 | January 9, 2013 at 9:00pm CDT

We'll track Wednesday's minor moves here…

  • The Giants signed second baseman Kensuke Tanaka to a minor league contract with an invitation to MLB Spring Training, reports John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The former Nippon Ham Fighters star will be given an opportunity to compete for a utility spot on the big league roster.
  • The Rockies signed right-hander Manny Corpas to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp, writes Thomas Harding of MLB.com. The veteran reliever served as the closer for Colorado in 2007 when the team reached the World Series for the first and only time in franchise history. The 30-year-old made 48 appearances for the Cubs in 2012, but became a free agent at the end of the season when he refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues.
  • The Nationals signed left-hander Brandon Mann to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training, reports Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com (via Twitter). Mann, 28, has spent the past two seasons pitching in Japan for the Yokohama Bay Stars where he posted a 4.27 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 92.2 innings.

Nationals Scouting Javier Vazquez

By Daniel Seco 2 | January 9, 2013 at 8:05pm CDT

The Nationals are scouting Javier Vazquez as GM Mike Rizzo traveled to Puerto Rico this evening to watch the veteran right-hander pitch, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com (on Twitter). While Washington already has one of the strongest rotations in all of baseball, adding an insurance arm may make sense given Dan Haren's health issues last season.

Vazquez has been contacted by 15 teams about his services, but does not plan to sign with a club until after the World Baseball Classic in March and will only consider pitching for a contender, writes Jim Bowden of ESPN.com (via Twitter). The former All-Star last pitched for the Marlins in 2011 where he posted a 3.69 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 192.2 innings.

Quick Hits: Morneau, Wilson, Tanaka

By Daniel Seco 2 | January 9, 2013 at 6:17pm CDT

Here's the latest news and headlines from around the league…

  • The Twins won't trade Justin Morneau this offseason, but they could look to move him before the July deadline, writes MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. It's not certain what the Twins would get in return for him, however, as he is in the last year of a six-year, $80MM deal and has had trouble staying healthy in recent years.
  • Former Giants closer Brian Wilson's rehabilitation efforts have him closer to throwing off a mound as the former All-Star remains silent about talks with teams regarding his next contract, reports Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). San Francisco remains interested in bringing the veteran reliever back for 2013, but only if Wilson is willing to accept a low base salary with performance-based incentives.
  • Look for the Giants to sign second baseman Kensuke Tanaka of the Nippon Ham Fighters to a minor league deal with an invitation to MLB Spring Training, says John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). Tanaka, 31, posted a .300/.350/.363 slash line this past season for Nippon and is a former teammate of Yu Darvish.

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 9, 2013 at 4:24pm CDT

The latest outright assignments from around MLB…

  • The Brewers announced that they outrighted Arcenio Leon to Triple-A Nashville after the right-hander cleared waivers. Leon, who had been designated for assignment two days ago, still receives an invitation to MLB Spring Training. The 26-year-old pitched 63 2/3 innings with the Astros' Double-A team this past season.

Beltway Links: Nationals, Morse, McLouth, Orioles

By Mike Axisa | January 9, 2013 at 3:35pm CDT

Mike Morse remains a prime piece of trade bait and earlier this afternoon we learned Adam LaRoche sought a no-trade clause as part of his new two-year deal with the Nationals. He did not receive one, however. Here's the latest on the Nats and Orioles…

  • Buster Olney of ESPN.com (Insider sub. req'd) doesn't see the Nationals getting much for Morse. The 30-year-old is eligible for free agency next fall and GMs aren't eager to give up good prospects for a player in that situation. Some GMs have told Olney privately that while they like Morse, they can't see surrendering much for him due to his defensive shortcomings and lengthy injury history.
  • Meanwhile, MLB.com's Matthew Leach says Morse is a very intriguing trade chip for the Nationals. He lists the Orioles, Yankees, Giants, Mariners, Rays, and Rangers as clubs who could have interest in the slugger.
  • Nate McLouth says he re-signed with the Orioles in large part because of the team chemistry in Baltimore, writes Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. The outfielder inked a one-year, $2MM deal with the O's in December.
  • Jonathan Bernhardt of Sports on Earth argues that the Orioles' lack of activity this offseason was the best of several bad options.
