Dodgers Interested In Rangers’ Yovani Gallardo

By Zachary Links | July 26, 2015 at 3:08pm CDT

The Dodgers view Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo as a backup plan if they do not land Cole Hamels or David Price, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).  It was reported last week that the Rangers are listening on Gallardo.

Gallardo, 29, has provided the Rangers with 121 1/3 quality innings since coming over in a winter deal from the Brewers. He owns a 3.19 ERA with 6.2 K/9 against 3.4 BB/9 on the year.

But, per Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Gallardo has given no indication of interest in an extension, making him an expiring asset for a club that has faded of late. Despite his solid work, Gallardo’s value may not quite match his results. His track record is more that of a mid-rotation innings eater than a top-of-the-rotation arm, and ERA estimators take a somewhat dim view of his work this year (particularly a 4.39 SIERA mark).

For his career, Gallardo owns a 3.65 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9.

The “club that has faded of late” is currently riding a four game win streak including two in a row against the division leader. So, although they had been scuffling, their confidence (including the front office) is riding higher right now and Daniels said if this weekend went well the Rangers would solely be buyers. Even if they lose today, they take 2/3 which is good. I doubt they sell him off.

Julian Leon and Jose de Leon are completely different prospects.
Ones a top 20 prospect, one is 11th in the Dodgers farm.

why get a closer when dodgers dont need one. jansen i believe is a better closer, im not 100% right but i believe he struggle a little as a setup man.

No way. He’s cheap controllable talented and whilst the clubhouse stuff is massively overplayed he’s clearly made an effort to tone it down recently. Even him playing at his worst this season he’s still a productive player. And without him in the lineup you’re exposed agains LHP.

Gallardo is average but average pitchers do well pitching in LA. He’d make a nice 3rd starter in a playoff series.

Solid. I think if you get him you still need to get another mid to back end starter. Maybe Leake or something?
