Blue Jays To Acquire Scott Feldman

By Steve Adams | August 1, 2016 at 2:38pm CDT

The Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Scott Feldman from the Astros, reports MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart (Twitter link).  The Astros will receive minor league pitcher Lupe Chavez in return, tweets Yahoo’s Jeff Passan.

Feldman opened the season as the Astros’ fourth starter, but by the end of April was spending most of his time working as a reliever.  The 33-year-old is owed about $2.75MM this year, after which he’ll be a free agent.  In another move, the Jays sent Jesse Chavez to the Dodgers for Mike Bolsinger.

The Cubs traded Scott Feldman once. As I recall, it turned out pretty well for us.

but chavez is a lot younger. he will give the astros many years. feldman will be a free agent next year. so the jays will only have him for 2 months this year. lol plus the astros got another player in the deal

What other player? And Chavez may never give them anything, he’s a lottery ticket.

I know they said Sanchez wasn’t going to impact their trading but this seems like it definitely did. With that said, not a terrible pickup (obviously not a blockbuster many Jays fans wanted). Feldman is a better long man option than Chavez and is good depth behind Hutch. I’m sure the Twins wanted one of SRF or Connor Greene for Santana.

Guadalupe Chavez? I was thinking of vacationing there next winter.

This looks a bit like a salary dump to me. Yeah, the Astros get the Blue Jays #20 prospect, but saving $4M probably had a lot to do with.

I’m surprised the Astros dealt him to the Blue Jays considering that they’ll play them 7 times in the next two weeks.

It isn’t a salary dump. It is straight up to make a spot open on the 40 man roster and get something in return for someone they aren’t going to resign anyways.

I guess the front office declared war on the name Chavez and shipped out Jessie and Guadaloupe Chavez in the same day. lol.

For those of you making fun of this trade, (“Oh yeah, World Series here we come!” Type comments) Feldman has been a very good pitcher since converting to relief. 2.41 ERA in 37.1 IP, with only 1(!) unintentional walk, against 27 strikeouts. He’s quietly been a very effective reliever and should help bolster the Blue Jays pen down the stretch.

Makes you wonder a little why the Astros, a contending team, would trade him then (to a team they’re chasing no less). Is their bullpen really that deep?

Yes. Since May 1st they have the best bullpen in baseball statistically. They also have Devenski and Feliz as long relievers that, while Feldman is pitching well, are both having better years. They also have 2 guys in the minors that up until now haven’t had a spot on the 40 man roster for. My guess is Hoyt or Musgrove comes up and fills his spot who they are very high on but haven’t had a spot for.

I agree. An 18 year old pitcher with two great pitches. With room to improve and a career 2.79 ERA. Yes, it’s a salary dump but it gave us a chance to promote Musgrove.

I see the Rangers & Indians going for it…the Blue Jays are treading water….irrelevant, unthreatening.

Just because they didn’t land Rich Hill or someone else doesn’t make them irrelevant. It almost assures that Sanchez will stay in the rotation, and with Stroman returning to form, they still have a very strong 1-4 for the playoffs.

No SP coming to Toronto it appears. Just a swingman to replace Chavez and a really lame reliever from LA. Looks like Sanchez is staying in the rotation (unless the team is completely insane) which is fine by me because Sanchez is better than pretty much anything they would bring in without trading out the entire farm system.

What do you think now that Jays also got Liriano to start? A big wild card if Sanchez goes to the bullpen
