No way a difference maker slides through waivers.

Depends on your definition of difference maker, I guess. I’d say that guys like Verlander and Upton are every bit the difference maker of anyone traded the past month. They’ll both slide right through waivers due to their contracts. If a team wants to make a deal for them, they can.. Thing is – they probably won’t for the same reasons no one traded for them at the deadline.

Yeah, that’s true. Verlander could be a small difference maker, but not with the remaining two years on his contract. He also has full no trade clause.

Being a difference maker has nothing to do with money or years… JV, at worst, is a high end 3 for any playoff team. Upton is a middle of the order power bat. Those guys would make a huge difference on the right team. Both will slide through waivers

If Verlander was the Verlander of even last season I’d agree. But not this year. Upton if he was a rental I’d say sure pick him up. But there is no way he will opt out. I don’t trust Upton to continue his good season. He hasn’t been bad in the past but not worth the money he is due. That’s why no one picked either up and they were both available. That’s also why they’d get through waivers. I don’t think, as evidenced by no one acquiring them, the impact comes anywhere near the down side.

This has to be a clear message to Matheny. We put together a good team you win with them or THAT will be the change. Mo is not going anywhere so Mathenys neck is on the block.

        Good team? That’s laughable.

They put their stock in the wrong guys and those guys have been busts (or at least flaming out in their sophomore slumps). Grichuk and Wong are the main failures, but you can add in other guys like Adams and Reosenthal.

Only thing going for them right now is their starting staff in 2 years should be lead by Martinez, Reyes, and Flaherty. All have super star potential.

Well aware Adams is gone and semi-rejuvenating his career on another team. My point was they should do the same with others. The Cardinals have been a great team for many years. For them to slide downwards towards “good” shows that they need to start fresh.

And don’t kid yourself, this team isn’t good enough to win the Central in an off year.

No one in the Central is good enough to win any other division. But the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates and Cardinals are good enough to win the Central. Doesn’t matter, I guess, bc no one in the Central make it very far.

Except the Cubs ARE good enough to win any other division. Despite their first half slide, they’re still among the most talented teams in the league and now they’re starting to show it again by going 13-3 since the All-Star Break. The Cardinals were not good enough to take advantage of the opportunity to jump out in front of an underperforming powerhouse and they’re certainly not good enough to compete with them when they’re running at full speed.

Wong hasn’t been good? Maybe you should, you know, pay attention.
          .
You’re just one (of many) Cardinal fans that don’t really gave a clue about baseball. The Cardinals have a seven :(not great) major league roster and a very good farm system. If fans like you got your way, the team would be in much worse shape than it is.

No team in baseball has had the sustainable success the Cardinals have had. It’s very common to gave a few down years. I’m so tired of Cardinal fans that expect them to just walk to the playoffs every year. That’s not how this works. If you’re only buying tickets when the team is a WS contender, you’re not a real fan anyway.

Record wise, the NL Central teams couldn’t win the NL East, NL West or AL West. They’d be right there in the other two divisions. As for the playoffs, the Dodgers certainly look like the team to beat in the NL, but as good as the Cubs were last season, it still took a lot of luck for them to win the World Series – like there were so many instances of pure luck that I can’t even list all of them… But that’s what’s needed in October. Rarely will you see a team that goes through the playoffs without having good luck. Time will tell if the Dodgers get those same bounces when it matters most. If they don’t, there’s no reason to think a team with the talent and experience of the Cubs can’t beat them.

You see that’s why they play 162. You can’t judge a team on “talent or potential. You judge them on the entire scope. They are not good enough to win anything besides the Central. Judging them on a small sample size shows pure biased.

Bottom line; the players on the team are placed their by the general manager.

The manager, though I am not a Matheny fan, can coach only the players given.

This has been an epic failure in the talent evaluation. Mozalik continues to avoid taking the responsibility of this minor league squad.

Why would any major league club want any of the Cardinals positional players?

The Cardinals may not be an exciting team, and there’s plenty of flaws, but they’re built better than results have shown. Statistics like Pythagorean Wins show that the Cardinals should be a minimum of 5 games over .500. Some outlets have 8 games over .500. That points to bad luck and incredibly bad managing

Wow, Cardinals fans sound like Pirates fans now. Crazy times.

“The Pirates never go all in. They won’t trade prospects to go for it.” – Yinzers

Right. Because they know they have a fair weather fan base and they can’t risk losing because their fans won’t support them.

The Cardinals fans, for example, consistently deliver high attendance, high ratings, big merchandise sales, etc. so they have good reason to demand a winner.

A little disappointed in the Cardinals they could have at least traded Lynn for a decent prospect. Does this mean he will sign an extension? I wouldn’t think so, he’ll test the free agent market.

Cardinals are too good to sell off and rebuild. And that is exactly what he wants to do. If he bought and hemmed the farm up, this team would be toast for a long time. So, he probably did what he HAD TO. And either they’ll restock and buy next year, or it’ll be time to sell off! Best move of the day was PITT acquiring Benoit. Ha. Ha. Ha

Cards made no moves today. Im not sure what theyre thinking. But I believe they still have a chance to win the division. Sure, they couldve made a move for a big bat or two. But sadly, that didnt happen. However, the best move they made was holding on to Lynn. They may or may not win the division, but I like their chances of at least hanging in there until late September.

As a cardinals fan I am extremely disappointed. The fact that the front office has faith in the underperforming 23 men on the the 25 man roster is outstanding. I mean I knew it was a long shot to make the playoffs but still do something to better our odds, or trade someone to get a prospect in return. I will not being going to anymore games or buying any more merch this year

I think landing a big athletic guy who has been crushing the ball in the upper minors for half a year of a RP was a pretty big steal, Cordell has to be rising even if the numbers are inflated from Colorado can not teach his size and athletic ability.
