The Braves have brought back a familiar face in Preston Tucker, re-acquiring the outfielder from the Reds in exchange for cash considerations (as per the Braves’ official Twitter feed).
Atlanta previously traded Tucker to Cincinnati as part of the teams’ July deal involving veteran outfielder Adam Duvall. The 28-year-old Tucker failed to impress during his brief time with the Reds, with only a .664 OPS over 42 plate appearances, and he was demoted to Triple-A earlier this week. Over the entire 2018 season, however, Tucker’s .240/.302/.419 slash line over 169 combined PA with the Braves and Reds this year is nearly league average (96 wRC+).
Tucker will provide the Braves with a bit more outfield depth as rosters expand in September, plus there is some late-bloomer potential given his strong career minor league numbers. Tucker does have 23 homers over his 636 career PA in the big leagues, though his overall production at the plate leaves much to be desired (.224/.281/.410).

Strange in that he’s not eligible for the playoffs. If Atlanta was interested, why now?
jimmyz
Because he still has years of control and they only had to throw Cincy some cash. He can be a decent, cheap 4th outfielder for a few years.
deweybelongsinthehall
My point was if he was worthy of a 40 man roster spot today, why not make this move last week when he would also have been playoff eligible? Did I miss a sudden injury?
kiddhoff
Nope. Youre done.

I’m surprised they didn’t give Preston Tucker a better look! I know he’s better than some of their outfielders in Triple A! The Braves must like him to re-acquired him!
FromTheCheapSeats
Moving into 2019, Preston Tucker had no chance of making the Reds’ Opening Day roster. No chance, at all.
This isn’t a bad move. The bad move was allowing Atlanta to include him in the Duvall deal in the first place.
redsfan48
Better than which of the Reds outfielders? Next year they have at least Winker, Schebler, and Ervin that are no doubt better, and possibly Hamilton too depending on how much you value his defense/baserunning. Gabby Guerrero and Mason Williams are likely at least similar in talent to Tucker. Senzel still needs somewhere to play. Bottom line, the Reds didn’t need Tucker because the offense is plenty good enough as is
justinept
Can’t Gennett play outfield? Putting him out there gives the Reds a spot for Senzel while keeping his bat in the lineup.
DockEllisDee
I think things would most likely shake out the other way around, with Senzel getting a look in the OF
FromTheCheapSeats
Not really.
bigredsfan41017
The Reds didn’t give him a chance! He was impressive in his short stay with the team!
Colorado Red
a 669 OPS is not impressive.
Outfield is not one of the needs for the Reds, Pitching is
Cam
Small sample size yes, but he was not impressive. He was the exact opposite.
DockEllisDee
No sir. Not impressive.

Make up your minds!!!
astick
There was no spot for him. Schebler in right. Winker in left. Ervin in center/4th outfielder. Dixon as utility.
FromTheCheapSeats
You left out Mason Williams. He’s a far better option than Tucker.
astick
I just understand why they even got him. It wasn’t like there was a need. He never seemed of a change of scenery type.
craig breslow
Though he’s probably just a September depth piece, would he technically be eligible for the postseason? He’s obviously been on the Braves roster this season, but wasn’t on September 1st.
CubsRule08
You have to be in the organization by August 31st to be eligible for the postseason roster, so even though he was with the team before he was traded to Cincy, I believe the only way for him to be added to postseason roster is if he replaces someone who’s on the 60-day DL. Not 100% sure though
RunDMC
Still need to make the playoffs and insurance if Duvall and Duda aren’t hitting RHP. I wouldn’t bet on Michael Reed or Lane Adams doing much considering.
chippahawk
Duvall prob be heading back to Cincinnati soon too. (As much as I want him to start hitting, he’s reminding me more and more of another Dan uggla as a brave.)
FromTheCheapSeats
There’s no room in the Reds’ outfield for Duvall. I believe you’ll see Winker in right, Hamilton in center, and a platoon of Ervin and Schebler in left.
Mason Williams is likely the fifth outfielder. Peraza (and even Herrera) can play OF in a pinch.

That reminds me, isn’t it about that time of year where Adam Rosales gets traded between Oakland and Texas 3 or 4 times?
