Padres Release Jose Torres

By Mark Polishuk and Steve Adams | October 10, 2018 at 9:20pm CDT

Oct. 10: The Padres released Torres after he unsurprisingly cleared waivers earlier this morning, MLBTR has learned.

Oct. 4: The Padres have designated left-hander Jose Torres for assignment, as per MLB.com’s official transactions listing.  Torres’ roster status had to be addressed once his 100-game suspension under the MLB/MLBPA joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy was up at season’s end.

Torres didn’t pitch in 2018 after he was charged with multiple criminal offenses during the offseason, stemming from a domestic disturbance incident where Torres was accused of pointing a gun at a woman with whom he was involved in a domestic relationship.  Torres’ charges included assault with a deadly weapon, intimidation, and criminal damage, as well as a charge for possession of marijuana.  He reportedly plead guilty to those charges in March. The Padres placed Torres on their restricted list in February, and Major League Baseball issued Torres with the 100-game suspension in June.

Torres, 25, made his big league debut in 2016 and then posted a 4.21 ERA, 8.3 K/9, and 3.94 K/BB rate over 68 1/3 innings in 2017.  With the Padres facing a 40-man roster crunch this winter as some of their best prospects become eligible for the Rule 5 draft, it isn’t surprising that Torres would be DFA’d rather than restored to the 40-man.  Torres could be outrighted to the minors if isn’t claimed or acquired during his 10-day DFA period, or it’s possible the Padres could simply release him altogether given the severity of his off-the-field situation.

He showed signs of potential but I am glad the Padres are cutting ties. Stand against those shady characters.

Yup, also have Strahm and Richard as bullpen candidates if they don’t crack the rotation.

Preller is hinting at adding multiple SP’s via trade this offseason so more left handed depth coupled enter the bullpen.

Castillo, Wieck and Strahm look like dominant lefty’s that will easily replace whatever Torres would have given, good move.

Youre right. He should have a sub 3 era, pitch 70 innings, and significantly better another rebuilding team.

This guy was a beast last yr. Combining him w Castillo in Bullpen would be devestating. I’m not here to judge what people do outside the game, only concerned with winning. And this decision does not help them improve. Typical move by this front office, not sure what they thinking have not liked 1 move they’ve made. Trea Turner, Myers, Hosmer, they keep showing they don’t know how to put together a 25 man roster that wins. Why bother to keep watching.

I don’t even know how to respond to a POV that’s this stupid. He’s a promising reliever who was ok last year who also got the worst-ever suspension for DV. To hell with that guy and the same goes for any fan who values winning over morals. Here’s hoping they really do cut ties.

They were thinking they have enough left handers for the pen. And Torres has 0 trade value.
Castillo wieck McGrath Keel strahm plenty of lefty options not to mention erlin possibly shifting to the pen.

But didn’t Jose Reyes, Euris Familia et al and more recently Addison Russel do this kind of things all the time? I mean, the sports, the business, society whatever forgives them and eventually they come back and play again. It is fair? It is what it is…

Addison Russell never pointed a gun at his ex wife. I do not believe the others did either so no, others did not do this type of thing (criminal assault with a deadly weapon)

How About Osuna for Blue Jays now Houston? Amongst, a host of others in all other sports. This wasnt a baseball decision, cause it would be a stupid one, but one the Pads make all the time. Castillo is only viable LH Pitcher they have in Pen, Strahm is gonna be a starter. Weick has pitched a whole like 6 innings in Majors. I liked how he came in and just Blew it by everyone out of the Pen. And Im sure Stammen gonna be gone theres a hole right there. another bonehead move to start the offseason, no place for Myers to play, and to many Corner OF. Watch them trade renfroe too!

Perfect move I don’t care if he has a career anywhere but at least they (Padres) have morals and I would rather lose a WS then have him win it and I’m a Brewers fan. I have brought my sons up to never ever lay a hand or disrespect a woman because i lost my mom at age 4. She died holding me so my boys have been taught to appreciate a lady if you don’t get along then move on .

Remember Julio Mateo? The difference is he was older than Torres and pitched in AAA after the domestic violence. So, Torres might get a chance to play. But, things have changed with the reactions to those who commit domestic violence. I would like to see if he has been convicted of any of these charges.

A conviction has absolutely no bearing on whether he did it or not.
