Morosi’s Latest: Bumgarner, Realmuto, Padres, Yankees, Gray, Fiers, Graveman, Jays, Happ

By Mark Polishuk | December 9, 2018 at 9:17pm CDT

Madison Bumgarner has been an oft-mentioned trade candidate this offseason, and the Giants are reportedly open to at least discussing their longtime ace.  As the Winter Meetings begin, however, MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi tweets that San Francisco isn’t close to a Bumgarner trade.  It remains to be seen if the Giants will actually go ahead with dealing the southpaw, as the team seems to still be weighing its rebuild-or-reload options under new GM Farhan Zaidi.  Morosi has previously mentioned the Phillies, Braves, and Brewers as three teams interested in Bumgarner if a trade were to develop, though his latest tweet adds the Yankees to that list as well.  Bumgarner is only under contract through the 2019 season, and even though his numbers have been solid but less than ace-like over the last two years, he would still provide a notable boost to any rotation.

Here’s more from Morosi’s Twitter feed…

  • The Padres have a “genuine interest” in acquiring J.T. Realmuto, while the Yankees aren’t in serious talks with the Marlins about the All-Star catcher.  Yankees GM Brian Cashman was quick to deny rumors about his team’s interest in Realmuto last week, and New York already has Gary Sanchez behind the plate for the foreseeable future (though some rumors indicated that Sanchez would’ve gone back to Miami as part of a Realmuto swap).  San Diego, meanwhile, has its own established catcher in defensive whiz Austin Hedges, plus one of the game’s top prospects in Francisco Mejia behind the plate.  It’s fair to speculate if Mejia could potentially head back to the Marlins as part of a package for Realmuto, and the Padres certainly have the overall prospect depth that Miami is demanding for Realmuto’s services.  Since Realmuto is controlled only through the 2020 season, his acquisition would indicate that the Padres and GM A.J. Preller are perhaps ready to end their rebuilding process and begin to compete by at least 2020, if not even next season.
  • Speaking of the Padres and Yankees, the two teams continue to discuss a potential Sonny Gray trade.  Morosi noted on the continued talks between the two sides earlier this week, and rumors of the Padres’ interest in Gray date back to last month.  Pitcher-friendly Petco Park would seemingly be an ideal place for Gray to rebound from his rough stint in the Bronx, especially since Gray’s drastic home/road splits from 2018 already indicated that his struggles were particularly contained to Yankee Stadium.
  • Mike Fiers and Kendall Graveman are two names on the Blue Jays’ list of pitching targets.  With an inexperienced starting five projected for 2019, the Jays were known to be looking at rotation help this winter — particularly if, as Morosi notes, the team decides to trade Aaron Sanchez or Marcus Stroman as part of its rebuilding efforts.  Fiers and Graveman were both recently non-tendered by the A’s, and fit Toronto’s need for short-term additions are a relatively low cost.  Fiers was in this same position last winter, as he signed a one-year deal with the Tigers and turned in solid numbers both before and after a midseason trade to Oakland.  Graveman would likely be pursued for a two-year deal with a low salary in the first year, as the right-hander is likely miss all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery.  Graveman was originally drafted by the Jays in 2013 (when Alex Anthopoulos was GM) and traded to the A’s in November 2014 as part of the four-player package that brought Josh Donaldson to Toronto.
  • With Patrick Corbin and Nathan Eovaldi off the board, “J.A. Happ is viewed as the next key domino in the pitching marketplace,” Morosi writes.  Happ has received interest from as many as 10 teams, as his age (36) would seemingly make him more amendable to a short-term contract, thus widening his market beyond that of a younger pitcher like Dallas Keuchel, whose desire for a longer-term and more expensive contract limits his list of suitors.  It stands to reason that many of the same teams interested in both Happ and Keuchel, to say nothing of other free agent arms like Yusei Kikuchi or Charlie Morton, so it stands to reason that we could see something of a run on starting pitching if Happ or any of those names were to sign in the near future.

Why on Earth would the Padres give up the #27 prospect in baseball who is Major League ready and fills a need on the diamond for them for a rental starter who had a 4.90 ERA last year and his team is desperate to get rid of him?

Lol that would be pretty great. Take Torrens from them in Rule 5 then trade him back to them. White Sox did something similar with Tommy Kahnle (although they weren’t the ones who took him in Rule 5)

For a fringe prospect the Yanks will hold onto Sonny and hope for a bounce back. I think it makes sense to keep him and see if they can fix something at Yankee stadium. But they are not trading him for fringe prospects! That’s not worth it especially since they need another starter. Every source I’ve read has Yanks getting back value be it a prospect or major league piece.

They will get a better player than people think. Some people just want to look at the overall numbers and ignore that he pitched like a #1 away from YS. And since he is being trade away from YS, Yanks are not going to sell him as a bad SP

      • SixFlagsMagicPadres

They’ll have to give up more than a fringe prospect, but Gray certainly is not going to cost them anything at the top of the farm. Maybe they’ll trade someone off the major league roster and a mid-level prospect.

You listed a productive multi-inning reliever (strahm), a top 30 prospect in all of baseball (urias), a 4th OF (jankowski), and a fringe 40 man (avila).

Thats like listing Trout and Sale as equivalent to Jo Jo Reyes and Terrance Gore.

          His worth is pretty obvious.

1 year rental making 9-ish mill, coming off a pretty terrible season where his attitude hurt his value a lot (forget the splits the way he acted laughing while getting booed off the mound).

Theyll get a C- prospect at best from a team looking for him to rebound and trade by the end of July.

        • billysbballz

Nahhhh think about what your saying pal. A team will take chance that he regains top rotation form and they flip him for a better return or sign him long term. Forget the c prospect! The Yanks would keep him themselves trust me! Any Gray trade will not be for a fringe prospect!

        • redrooster

Yankees aren’t keeping. The only leverage they have with him is the fact that most teams (especially those that play in pitcher’s parks) would be interested in seeing if he can return to form.

        • bj82

I don’t think he needs to “return to form” he pitched pretty well away from YS.

There’s no way the Giants get what they want for Bumgarner. He doesn’t have as much value to any other team than he does to the Giants. The only other player on the team that is as much of a fan favorite and puts butts in seats is Buster Posey. Trading Bumgarner doesn’t get the Giants the assets they want and hurts fan morale. I’d be shocked if Bumgarner is on another team at any point in 2019.

If they are guaranteed to be able to sign him they should definitely trade him. Get back a top 100 prospect or two for one year of MadBum then bring him back in FA next year.

        • Balk

I agree, but you have to get someone willing to give a package worth trading him for. And you know how that story goes. You miss extending him and someone comes in on a bidding war and it gets dicey. He’s to cheap to not keep around.

        • zpgreen

For some odd reason that I just can’t explain, I feel like this wouldn’t work with Bumgarner’s personality. He is a rough around the edges guy that wouldn’t fit in every clubhouse because of his intensity bordering on insanity, plus the Giants would have to be very delicate with the way they handle things for tampering purposes and just dancing around how Bumgarner might feel. I wonder how much he values winning over comfort right now as he doesn’t strike me as a ring chaser and might rather just stay in SF.

        • redrooster

The thought of a bidding war is exactly why he wouldn’t sign an extension at this point

        • redrooster

If the Giants trade him and allow him to finish out his last contract year pitching for a team with a better chance at a ring than them and add to his legend as a postseason god then offer him the most money or close to it in FA next year, I doubt whether he signs with someone else for less money.

        • sasafrass81

I hope they resign him as well, I was wondering about an extension of 6/150 area with maybe deferred money like the Nats have structured into Corbin, Scherzer and Stas’ contracts? Say 5mm for 6 years starting in the final year of the contract. Overall the contract would be 7/162 with this coming year and bring his AAV down some. However, your 6/120 sounds good too as MadBum has stated he’s not looking for ridiculous money, just fair market and has never complained about his current contract. I just don’t see him being traded for what the organization feels he’s worth and the risk of disappointing the fan base when they are trying to keep fans coming to AT&T after 2 disappointing seasons.

        • redrooster

Losing him to free agency would have the same effect on the fanbase as trading him.

        • sasafrass81

Most definitely, but fans see it differently. One is your own team sending an iconic figure away, while the other can be seen as the player desiring to move on or trying to rationalize it as him being stolen from your team. Giants have the money to keep him, they can trade him for pieces and try to resign him, they can move on from the MadBum era. I personally would love to keep him, especially when you read online and listen to MLB Network insiders claim that we probably won’t get much with his 1 yr of control, recent injuries, etc. For some reason, Giants fans seem to be like ownership and want players to stay forever lol.

        • redrooster

So making someone else look like the bad guy is more important than maximizing long-term utility?

          Got it.

        • sasafrass81

Fans have done that, they look for the bad guy, the fall guy and someone to blame. This isn’t something new to sports, just look the comments section here on MLBTR lol.

I want what’s best for the team, I may personally like to keep MadBum and feel he has long term value for the club, but I also understand he might fetch the Giants someone who will help us in the bigger picture in regards of contending in the future. What do you personally think he is worth in trade?

        • redrooster

Not sure but more than the draft pick the Giants get if they don’t trade him.
And if they do trade him, nothing says they can’t pull a Chapman with him.

        • sasafrass81

If you were to list teams in need of a top catcher with 2 years of control left, San Diego would probably literally be the last choice. Padres fans have been patient and I for one would like to see this rebuild actually have the chance to develop. Clearly when the time comes to compete for the NL West, making trades from the prospect depth would be a great idea. What isn’t being said very much is that these exciting prospects that we are all anticipating will be part of a successful period in the history of the organization, are going to struggle early on in their careers. Tatis has a lot of swing and miss in his game. The quality pitching prospects are for the most part another couple of years away from even making their debuts. Not going to step into the league and carry the team at age 20. They are all really young! Give them time and let the window open when it should! Realmuto will be playing for some other team before the Padres core prospects are able to contend with the Dodgers. This is distressing to read about. I think we are set at catcher….WTF!!!

Allen and Quantrill will make it up sometime in 2019, possibly even make the team out of Spring Training. There was talk of them getting September callups but it looks like Preller decided to conserve roster spots this year for guys who had to be protected.

I’m hoping these rumors about Realmuto are all just talk. You know the Marlins are going to ask for a king’s ransom for him, and I’d hate to see the Padres have to give up some of their biggest prospects for a guy like that. I know he’s still young, but Catchers decline pretty quickly, and personally, I don’t think Realmuto will ever be as valuable as he is right now.

SixFlags- I agree. I’d like to stay away from J.T. because of the price it will take to get him, and because I actually would like to see Mejia/Hedges play out for a season.

Preller has made to much progress to strip it all down now for veterans, he spent so much time building this up, I don’t see him just reversing those actions for a 2 year window of control over Realmuto.

The scary part is I can see him doing it. I mean this is the same guy who signed Eric Hosmer to a franchise record contract even though the Padres already had a working 1st baseman signed to an immovable contract in Wil Myers and one of the game’s better first base prospects in Josh Naylor.

    • sasafrass81

I feel SD needs to see this rebuild through, the NL West is about to see DBacks and Rockies enter rebuilds most likely, while the Giants search for direction under new PBO leadership. They will have the Dodgers to compete with and while the NL East and Central beat up on one another, the Friars might have a shot at the WC slots. I have a lot of loyal, but frustrated Padre fans for friends and would like to see them happy for their club.

Maybe Preller is the leader of some baseball mystery school and has decided that his baseball prana (the prospects) must now be used to manifest the reality he wishes to create (winning a title). Trade the whole farm Mister Preller. But it better bring a title or you and all your cronies’ heads may end up on a pike (metaphorically speaking). It’s only good magic if it works.
