Padres Agree To Terms With First-Rounder C.J. Abrams On Below-Slot Deal

By Ty Bradley | June 8, 2019 at 1:30pm CDT

1:27 PM: Abrams’ bonus will be $5.2MM, per Jim Callis of MLB.com, over $500K fewer than the $5.74MM slot value for the selection.

1:02 PM: The Padres have agreed to terms with their first-round (sixth overall) selection C.J. Abrams, per a team report.

Abrams, a 6’2 shortstop from Roswell, GA, is said to have top-of-the-scale speed and a legitimate chance to stick at the position as he progresses through the minors. MLB.com reports the lefty swinger “controls the bat very well” and could settle in between the 10-15 homer mark annually. Abrams was a fixture on top-10 draft boards all spring, with many outlets ranking him anywhere between the second and sixth best prospect in the ’19 draft.

With the selection, the Padres add to their embarrassment of blue-chip riches on the farm. Even with the graduations of Fernando Tatis Jr., Chris Paddack, and perhaps Josh Naylor and Francisco Mejia (should they accrue the necessary number of at-bats) the club still boasts, depending on the source, anywhere between five to eight top-100 prospects, with a glut of high-upside talents of all kinds in the wake.

Don’t worry about Mears, my schools in the same division as him and my friends that actually know him say he’s 100% taking the money.

Well I for one was hoping this was an announcement of an extension for Tatis, but this is good too… 🙂

Ah…kingkooba…what type of years and $$$ do you see? I’d actually like to get that done immediately. Getting more expensive every time he takes the field. Obviously I’m sure the Padres would like to as well…

He’s getting more expensive but is cheap af right now. I wouldn’t hate a deal similar then acuna but I can easily see him making more.

Basically have to extend him on the cheap to make calling him up 15 days early worth it

That was fast. Speaking of fast having his speed in our lineup with Tatis can one day be deadly!

Padres need to figure out the OF and figure out whos sticking in the rotation.

Have any of these non-Tatis Padres prospects panned out? Paddack’s been hit hard recently and it seems all their OF prospects have been one dimensional. I’ve seen two Quantrill starts and in neither did he look ready. Are they all just down in A ball every year? You read about all these prospects but they’re playing Ian Kinsler who’s coming up on his 60th birthday. Padres fans sure a patient lot.

The high end talent is still in minors. Paddack Gore Patino are viewed at the future with guys like morejon Weathers quantril strahm lamet nix allen Baez vying for the 4 and 5 spot.

Their pen is missing Jose Castillo and Edwards Abrams are a few years away.

If the padres are desperate enough they could ship urias and some pitching like baez allen to the Royals for Merrifield to man 2nd until Edwards or Abrams come up to join tatis jr and machado.

Padres need an ace and need 2B help. They should be playing cordero when he comes back.

I think Greg Garcia is playing a fine 2nd base. Giving up assets for an ace I get.. a 2nd basemen I cant say the same.

Most the guys on the MLB roster arent Prellers guys. Franmil is very early in his career. I expect him to grow. Renfroe is playing great D this year. Paddack is a rookie theres no reason to get to high or low on any results.

Reyes is doing well. So is Renfroe … who is now rated as one of the NL’s better outfielders.. Lauer and Lucchesi are improving every start. Quantrill’s fine. Don’t know what you saw. Punched out 7 Phillies the other day. K’d 9 in Toronto. Naylor’s just getting started. Almost all of the prospects are 22 or under. Might want to look a little more closely next time.

Reyes can’t get his OBP over 300 and is this year yet another one dimensional player on a team who doesn’t need more guys to hit home runs.

Renfroe isn’t a prospect anymore and can’t hit RHP.

Lauer and Lucchesi both have ERAs over 4 despite pitching in a park supposedly not hitter-friendly.

Strike outs don’t mean much when you give up runs to one of the worst offensive teams in the league.

Let’s face it, the Padres are a fourth-place team in a division where they should be coasting in an easy second. Instead they’re struggling to stay ahead of the division-worst Giants but you keep drinking that Kool-Aid and pretending that you’re right up with the Dodgers. All’s going well, especially with Machado playing so well.

Renfroe has a .861 OPS against RHP’s this year so try again.

Reyes is 23 years old and on his way to a 40 home run season … Renfroe does hit RHP and has developed into one of the best defensive outfielders in the league …. Petco is not the “pitcher friendly” ballpark anymore. That is a myth .dispelled 5 years ago … Lauer and Lucchesi are both on their way to 2.5 WAR seasons.

Don”t know why people choose to pee on cornflakes. A personality flaw, I suppose.

Chris Carter hit 40 homers and couldn’t find a job the next year. Hitting 40 homers is impressive but not terribly helpful if the rest of skill set is poor,

Can you tell me the difference in home and away ERA’s for the two pitchers? If a home away is under three and the away ERA is approaching seven, what does that tell you?

Renfroe had a WAR of borderline replacement level player in 2017 and 2018. Sure he had a good month of May made better by a great series against the Jays but one month does not make a season, even if it helps overcome his poor April.

          In 2013, Petco ranked 30th in Park Factor; 29th in 2014; in 2015, 20th; in 2016,12th; 29th again in 2017; 13th in 2018 and 24th this year. That follows 2011-12 placings of 26th, 28th and 26th. Got a trend going?

I’m sure it’s frustrating for Padres fans and Preller’s schizophrenic methods haven’t helped much but if fans don’t put pressure on the fo, then the Padres are destined for another decade of mediocrity at best but more likely, last place finished now that SF has hired Zaidi.

TIL that 1.6 WAR is considered “borderline replacement level” and that a .924 OPS in the month of April is considered a “poor” April.
