Tigers Showing Interest In Chris Bassitt, Lucas Giolito

By Mark Polishuk | January 10, 2026 at 9:15am CDT

The Tigers entered the offseason with a focus on adding pitching help, and that goal has manifested itself in the form of two notable bullpen arms (Kenley Jansen and the re-signed Kyle Finnegan) and a rotation candidate coming off a successful stint in South Korea (Drew Anderson).  Other pitchers like Ranger Suarez, Zac Gallen, Michael King, Ryan Helsley, Pete Fairbanks, and Brad Keller have also been linked to Detroit at various times this winter, and the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon report that the club has also shown interest in Chris Bassitt and Lucas Giolito.

Somewhat surprisingly, Detroit is the first team known to have interest in either Bassitt or Giolito, even though the right-handers are coming off successful 2025 seasons.  This could reflect the relatively slow-moving nature of the free agent starting pitching market, as such top arms as Suarez, Gallen, and Framber Valdez are all still looking for their next contracts.  With those larger names still unsigned and some trade candidates (i.e. Freddy Peralta, MacKenzie Gore) still potentially available, teams may wish to fully explore their chances with these pitchers before turning to more second-tier options like Bassitt or Giolito.

Bassitt’s age also doesn’t help him, as he turns 37 in February.  Still, there isn’t much indication Bassitt is slowing down, as he has thrown 723 innings over the last four seasons with the Mets and Blue Jays with just two minimal stints on the injured list.  The second of those brief IL stints (a bout of lower back inflammation) occurred this past September, and might’ve cost Bassitt a spot in Toronto’s playoff rotation.  Bassitt wasn’t healthy enough to participate in the ALDS, but upon returning in a relief capacity for the ALCS and World Series, the righty had a sparkling 1.04 ERA over 8 2/3 postseason innings.

Over the last four seasons, Bassitt has a 3.77 ERA, 22.4% strikeout rate, and 7.5% walk rate.  The K% is a little below league average and the BB% is slightly above average, plus Bassitt has done a very good job of limiting hard contact.  He isn’t going to wow anyone with his velocity or swing-and-miss ability, but Bassitt has been able to keep hitters off-balance with what is technically an eight-pitch arsenal.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Bassitt for a two-year, $38MM contract this winter while ranking the veteran 24th on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents.  Giolito wasn’t far behind in the #27 spot, projected for two years and $32MM.  That number might well have been higher if it wasn’t for a bout of right flexor irritation and a bone issue in his throwing elbow that arose right before the Red Sox began their playoff run.  Giolito has since described the “freak injury” as just a temporary problem that quickly subsided, and testing revealed no damage to his surgically-repaired UCL.

Giolito missed the entire 2024 season due to UCL surgery, and he had a Tommy John surgery right at the start of his pro career in 2012.  A hamstring strain also delayed the start of his 2025 season and his comeback from his most recent elbow procedure, but Giolito had a 3.41 ERA over 145 innings for the Sox.  This solid bottom-line performance was undermined, however, by a 4.65 SIERA and an array of subpar Statcast numbers.

Giolito doesn’t turn 32 until July and potentially offers more upside, even though he hasn’t looked like a true frontline pitcher since his heyday with the White Sox from 2019-21.  Bassitt is the older and more stable of the two, as while he probably isn’t suited to hold down a front-of-the-rotation spot, he is about as sturdy a choice possible for the back end of a pitching staff.

In theory, Detroit is only looking for back-end rotation help, as the team’s starting five is set on paper as Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, Reese Olson, and Anderson.  Troy Melton, Keider Montero, and Sawyer Gipson-Long are among the depth candidates slated for either Triple-A starts, bullpen work, or perhaps just the fifth starter’s role if Anderson is instead deployed as a reliever.

Beyond 2026, however, Olson is under team control and the Tigers hold a $10MM club option on Anderson for 2027.  Skubal, Flaherty, and Mize are all slated to enter free agency next winter, so bringing in a starter on a multi-year contract would help the Tigers lengthen their rotation in 2026 and add some measure of stability going forward.

Skubal’s situation looms large over Detroit’s future plans, as it remains possible that the Tigers could still trade the superstar rather than risk letting him walk for nothing but a compensatory draft pick.  Skubal’s upcoming arbitration hearing provides a more immediate impact to the rotation, as Rosenthal and Sammon note that the Tigers’ ability to spend on Bassitt, Giolito, or other roster upgrades will surely be impacted by whether or not Skubal will cost $19MM or $32MM in 2026.

RosterResource estimates the Tigers’ 2026 payroll at roughly $171.2MM, which is up from their $154.7MM estimated payroll from the end of the 2025 campaign.  The $13MM gap in Skubal’s salary possibilities isn’t nothing, but Detroit fans eager to see the team make a bigger transactional splash won’t be pleased if the club is resisting even a relatively modest investment in the Bassitt/Giolito tier of players.  Broadcasting uncertainty is also a revenue factor, as the Tigers are one of nine teams who have ended their agreements with Main Street Sports.

Skubal is definitely worth $32 million for this year. It’s definitely time for the Tigers to trade him, if they wanna pay him a measly $19 million this season. When did Detroit start collecting food stamps?!?!?!?!

They would have been stupid to offer him $32 million when he’s only projected for around $18 million. They will win the arbitration case. Case closed.

When did a 90% raise to $19MM become “measly”? Even the Yankees haven’t given a $19MM offer to a pitcher in arbitration.

They are more likely to negotiate something both sides can age to. If they can’t and it goes to an arbitration he would almost certainly win bendigo the arbitratorcan only cost between option A) $19 mil or B) $32 mil. I think 100% of us believe that he deserved more than what David Price earned 10 years ago. Arbitrator’s usually set precedent not choose lesser numbers for arguably the best player at that same position.

tigers – Skubal is one of, if not the, best pitchers in the game. He cannot be replaced, only his spot in the rotation can.

Probably should have been mentioned in the article, Giolito ended last season with an injury that prevented him from making a final regular season start or a postseason start. His final two starts did not go well, combined 5 ER in 9 IP. He says he is physically fine now, but after what he pulled 2 years ago I wouldn’t necessarily believe him.

Bottom line, if he’s healthy he would be a good addition …. but that’s a mighty big if.

Yeah, first of all, he isn’t signing an extension – he’s going FA. Once he’s there only a handful of teams would be able to afford him assuming he has a good platform season. I don’t know if Dodgers would go long-term for him. Boston no cuz they already did with Crochet. Cubs definitely not. Angels? Not for a n pitcher, no. Toronto? I know they’ve got deep pockets but if they sign Bo or Tucker I don’t think so. Yankees doubtful. That leaves Mets.

Don’t know for sure… But it’s written on the walls. What have the Tigers done recently that shows us they’re serious about spending the money to make a big push in the playoffs? They’re coming off two playoffs appearances after a 10 year drought and they’re still not spending money or making moves to improve the team. This ownership isn’t interested in spending the type of money it would take to retain a pitcher of Skubals caliber

Motor, you can pray all you want but he would have been locked up if he was staying. Barring injury, he’s going to one of five or six clubs that can and will pony up the bucks. My Sox are not on that list as Henry will never pay the freight. He’ll make sure Breslow is in the bidding but it’s all for show. I’m just glad that Crochet signed…

Again, you don’t know that, none of us do. The Tigers have exclusive opportunity to negotiate with him right now. He says he wants to stay and loves Detroit, so unless he’s lying that counts. If he actually does want to stay then the hometown discount combined with the sure thing should apply. I’m sure everyone said the same thing about JRam in Cleveland. The Tigers and him working out a long term extension right now benefits both. If he gets hurt before his walk year then good luck breaking the record for a pitching contract. If he would turn down a $375-400 million extension then I think they should just dump him right now and get what they can. A $450 million contract like people talk about makes it hard to compete for other complimentary players to build a World Series team. One player is not going to win them a championship no matter how good a pitcher he is.

Torres, Flaherty, Jansen, Finnegan are recent examples that were aimed at improving the team but he didn’t i ersoend to do it. They tried for Bregman. A lot of what he trying to do is develop players so they have a talent pipeline to feed to MLB roster. I do agree that they need a big bat. The pitchers depends on a Flaherty bounce back and further development by Melton. More established starters would be nice to add to the pool.

Uhhh, Detroit’s ‘24 Opening Day payroll was $97.7 million. OD ‘26 is projected over $168 million. Still not spending money?
In ‘27 they have $48 million going off the books with Gleyber, Flaherty, and Mize. Given they’ll be paying Skubal at least $19 million this year the money is certainly there to at least double Skubal’s ‘26. With Jobe returning and Melton looking decent plus McGonigle likely up in the IF they can be competitive for Scooby.

I’m in between on whether they should extend him or not. How many elite years does he have left? Is he really worth 400 mill pitching every 5 days? And as far as showing it, it’s a Boras tactic. It’s more pressure from the fans. He might mean it, but I don’t think you’re getting a discount.

Agree MCBB. The Tigers aren’t in a hurry to do anything because they don’t have to. If they really want to extend him, they can continue to talk behind the scenes until the season, when Skubal will probably want to halt any more negotiations.

Tigers should have their offer ready before then. Whether Skubal is extended or not, the Tigers should go for the playoffs again with Skubal in ’26.

If for some reason, they’re way out of it in July, then they can consider trades again. Or they can just hold onto him for the comp pick, which has been viewed kind of unfairly. With what they’re likely to get w/ a Skubal comp pick, they should be in position to get a player the caliber of McGonigle.

You have to figure they retain Skubal or Mize at least. They also have Jobe, Melton, Olsen in the fold who are all potential 1-3 starters, with Anderson, Hamm, Montero and Hurter potential #5 types. Olsen is highly underrated. That is still a decent, though unproven, rotation even without their top 3 or any additions.

Giolito between 2019 and 2021 (with ranks):

        427.2 IP (13th)
        30.7% K% (8th)
        8% BB% (43rd)
        fWAR (7th)
        ERA/xERA/FIP/xFIP (18th/9th/16th/18th)

Those are the numbers of a strong #2, borderline ace pitcher. If your expectations are above that, then you set them too high.

Giolito has only had Tommy John surgery once – that was in 2012. It was an internal brace procedure in 2024 if that’s what you were thinking.

Giolito has been quite healthy otherwise since 2021. Making 89 starts in the other 3 seasons.

He’s also been quite consistent in his performance since 2021, never being ‘ineffective’, but only being a #4 type starter.

But the claim was the he’s ‘never reached expectations’, not that he’s been a lesser pitcher since 2021, Clearly any expectation that he would have been better than the numbers listed, would have made him one of the best few pitchers in all of baseball, which is far too high an expectation to set on any pitcher.

Maybe I was a bit hard on Giolito, but you were way too easy on him by pointing out data from 5-7 seasons ago. He was above average (ERA+ > 1) 4 of 5 years before 2022, but only 1 of 3 seasons since (plus the year lost to internal brace surgery). He is a #4 starter on a decent team, #5 on a good team.

          #For the love

I don’t see how I was ‘way to easy’ on Giolito as you’re repeating my claim that he’s been a #4 starter in recent seasons. I never made the claims you’re arguing against. The initial comment made by the previous commentor was foolish, and that’s what I was pointing out.

ERA isn’t a good way to determine how good a pitcher is now OR how he’ll be going forward. It’s only useful in reflecting on the pitcher’s past results.

Given Giolito was a bit better after the surgery, him being a strong #4 or even a weak #3 is quite plausible going forward (#5 starters tend to be just above replacement level). He also has past success of being far greater which gives him upside to consider. I don’t believe he’ll reach that upside but others may be more optimistic.

But he’s not a fringe backend guy. He is a #4-5 with upside to be a #2-3. He’s only 32. On a short 2 year deal why not? Seems like it is a similar situation to when they signed Flaherty. Maybe playing with his old buddy Flaherty will help him turn a corner.

If top-end investment in winning now isn’t in the plans, moving quickly to reset expectations is the smart move. If the $13M is so important, Tigers ought to trade Skubal now. Fans will hate it but the return is more likely to soften the blow and the reality might be a bit easier to stomach.

If they look at trading Skubal and still want to compete they need a good young arm coming back who can replace him (not totally)…think Kirby (I think he will win a Cy Young one day) or MacLean. I doubt anybody gives that up. They also need a young player at SS, 3B, OF or DH who makes the offence better next year. Prospect centered packages likely mean punting on the season and taking a step back after two straight years of making it to the second round of the playoffs. On top of that they need to acquire more arms for depth…signing Giolito would help with that. I see a path to them remaining competitive without Skubal if they can get the right players back.

I don’t think anyone can/will offer what they want or need. They should make their best offer to Skubal now. If us Tigers fans had a vote I think most would agree it would be to keep him.

I don’t doubt, for one second, that Tiger fans want him in Detroit. And I also agree that the ask will outstrip any offer, making a trade unlikely. That is especially true, given the uncertainty of the CBA situation and his one-year window.
Trouble is all the noise around the money.
IF that is the primary focus for management/ownership, it seems to me the wisest plan would be to maximize his value as a trade piece and move on to the, presumably less costly, alternative.
If the primary focus is attempting to win the WS, keep Skubal and accept that the compensation pick is likely all the Tigers will see going forward.

Giolito yes on a 2-year deal, A big NO to an aging Bassitt for 2 years but I would do a one-year deal, especially if we manage to trade Skubal before ST begins. I would love to sign Skubal, but the smart play is to trade him now since he won’t sign an extension or the Tigers are just not in the ballpark. when it comes to signing him.

I think they should load up for 26 and try to make a legitimate run for the World Series. Sign a high AAV short term deal for a 3B slugger, add another starter the same way and go for it. Only the Dodgers repeat, due to their billion dollar payroll, so take the shot knowing there might be a lockout next year! From the slow movement on free agents, I wouldn’t be surprised to see owners try forcing a salary cap. If that happens Skubal might wish he signed an extension.

Give him an A+ on the draft. The 2023 draft may be legendary. He stunned experts by passing on Wyatt Langford to take Max Clark. Then with the Comp. A pick, he used the money saved by pre-negotiating a lower bonus with Clark to sign Kevin McGonigle away from his commitment to Vanderbilt. That was not a rookie POBO move!

Then making the playoffs two years in a row. No worse than a B.

With the Mets rotation issues over the last few years, not retaining Bassitt was a big miss. In comparison, the ill fated Frankie Montas signing cost the Mets about a $1,000,000 an inning.

The Tigers aren’t trading Skubal. They aren’t looking for a replacement for Skubal. They are looking to fortify their rotation due to the fact that Skubal will probably be gone next season, and they want to take advantage of having his talent on the team while they do. That is how I see it.

I would have thought that between his impressive rookie debut, and 3 starters being in their last contract year, Melton would be penciled into the 5th starter role so he has some prep for 2027. He seems quite capable, so he needs to be developed.

They said he would get a chance to earn a spot. If he pitches like last year I can’t see Anderson or Montero bumping him, plus Olson is fragile. I wonder if he will be on an innings limit? I seem to remember reading he hasnt pitched much over 100 innings in a season.

Analysis of Mr. Christopher Paul Ilitch’s, epic battle with chrometophobia and it’s resolution in 10 easy steps.

Remember folks, he is an American businessman.

    1) was off to a bad start when he didn’t hire the Superfife or adhere to the various snippets of advise offered as absolutely free samples of unparalleled baseball and business wisdom right here on MLBTR.

    2) IF Skubal really can get half a billion dollars in FA? Hallelujah! But that won’t be the Tigers. 10 years x $36M, a max estimate, would be between almost 20%-25% of a $160-$180 payroll. Anymore is a ridiculous ask of the organization and not viable for the balance of the entire team.
    3) Arbitration? Yeah. Low ball response vs high ball response. Jerk me, I’ll jerk you back. The Tigers are not a high payroll org. What other teams pay, may not be so relevant.
    4) Trade him? Errrr…I’m a fan but interesting no one ever mentions the Reds but keep fantasizing the Mets will trade a potential Cy Young rookie and more for him….uh? really?
    5) IF Illich could overcome his chrometophobia for a moment, he could consider taking on Bohm and Castellanos and ALL of that salary in exchange for top prospects. The Phillie top 3 in 2025 cost them much less than $10M. Arenado is in St. Louis (Hail Satchmo!). If GMs don’t care about wasting millions of dollars, maybe owners do. A phone call directly to the owners, who’s money it is, expaining the situation just might be useful. Yes. You have to send back decent stuff to lessen the fact it would be 100% a salary dump. The Tigers need room on the 40 says Malloy.
    6) You can trade those same guys WITH cash to get more prospects- before or after you sell some merch during the season, hoping for a bounce back or not. Casti might do well in Cincy. Arenado wants Cali. Buy more prospects.
    7) You can sign viable starters and bats, trade them mid season to lower the final payroll outcome while saving wear and tear on the guys we intend to stick with. The bigger the name, the smaller the risk of injury or bad performance and more merch/tickets to sell.
    8) Detroit is close enough to the Canadian border and the Seagrams’ distillery that if Harris, Greene and Hinch can’t solve this chrometophobic issue, there something seriously wrong with them. 1 case, 2 phone lines, 1 ball point pen = PROBLEM SOLVED! What do those guys do in those Ivy League frats? Did they learn nothing?
    9) Illich has failed to establish WWF day at Comerica, to help save Tigers in the wild. SUPERFIFE’S TOP PRIORITY. Stuffed animal.for the kids and cool adults. Money for WWF and raise awareness in conjunction with the DETROIT ZOO. (No. I’m not talking about partying downtown or at Gigi’s = although turning it into a community event/parade/festival with music downtown WOULD BE TOTALLY AWESOME!) Come on, Chris! IT’S A TAX WRITE OFF! MAKE IT HAPPEN!
    10) Remember Mr. Illich, the Superfife does not suffer from that terrible affliction. I’ll spend your money for you! Hire the Superfife!

    Signed Sincerely,
    The Superfife

Why would one believe that Torres is worth the Qualifying Offer then lowball the best pitcher in baseball? Why are we looking at two retreads? So Harris can say he’s trying?
The window is small. There is not a lot of talent there. A very anemic offensive team with mid level pitching at best. Verlander offers more for one year with an option than either two of these guys. Be a smart move not only talent wise but the optics would buy Harris some grace. Sign a hitter. A “Professional” hitter as they all love to say.
Otherwise, do not be surprised to see Cleveland be the more consistent team and win the division again.
This hoping to catch lightning in a bottle theory is smoke and mirrors to hide an inept and floundering front office.
