Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly has succeeded in appealing his eight-game suspension. The ban will now span five contests. Jared Carrabis of Barstool Sports first reported the news on Twitter, with Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com confirming that report (via Twitter).
Kelly was suspended after a well-publicized bench-clearing incident during a game with the Astros. He was deemed to have thrown in the area of the head of Houston third baseman Alex Bregman. The suspension also reflected Kelly’s taunting thereafter.
More recently, Kelly hit the injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder. He’ll still need to serve out his suspension once he’s ready for activation, though it seems possible the Dodgers will be able to manage the timing to blunt the impact of the ban.
HalosHeavenJJ
I figured it would get reduced. He didn’t actually hit anybody. But he did enough to warrant a sit down.
I’m good with this.
beisbolista
He deserves to be suspended for making a face and swearing after striking out the top villain in the game? When did this sport become US Congress?
Briffle2
Don’t act like Kelly is the first pitcher to throw at a batter, not hit him, but still get suspended. Five is fine.
parx
Kelly gave baseball fans a very small amount of justice, it’s a shame the powers that be are such soft cowards these days and suspend him for doing something the Astros earned when they cheated baseball as a whole
Lloyd Emerson
Joe Kelly is an American hero.
larry48
Three was a better number, for not hitting anyone , % games for making a face LOL,
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Yes. A pitcher that was on the 2018 Red Sox that also cheated and Kelly didn’t speak up about his team cheating its way to a world series served those cheating Astros justice.
For people like parx, you can’t fix stupid.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Yes. American heroes knowingly let their teammates cheat and don’t say anything about them doing so.
What a hero.
johnnydubz
Why did he end Bergman’s career like Clemens did Piazza
mlbdodgerfan2015
Five games is the equivalent of 13-14 games in a 162 game season. Way too much. At least the Dodgers can have him come back from IL even if he’s not ready and then he can serve the five games.
Redwood13
Democrat gots be
AndyMeyer
Yeah, throwing at someone’s head is “justice”.
Redwood13
What are you 10 years old? Hitting someone in the head could kill them it’s a game all teams cheat get over it.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Beisbolista you must be talking about Machado when you say top villain in the game.
paddyo furnichuh
Beisbolista seems allergic to commenting in any other way than hyperbole and unsound logic.

what about asstros thugs than punched laureano? they should be suspended for 10 games or longer!
texasfury93
lol laureano is the thug
higgy5220
Guy should be praised
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Should also be suspended for not reporting his 2018 red sox teammates for cheating.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Know anything about that particular “scandal”? Nope? Then maybe don’t comment like you do.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Did the team cheat Scotty? Yes or no? Correct answer is yes.
Were coaches and players aware they were cheating? Yes or no? Correct answer is yes.
Scotty doesnt know. Not surprised.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Joe Kelly should have reported his teammates and organization for utilizing decoded opponents signals.
Instead Kelly sat by like all the rest and continued to let his teammates and organization cheat by using decoded signals.
Don’t make excuses for cheaters Scotty.
vtbaseball
blah blah blah
Dorothy_Mantooth
Um, no they weren’t. Replay guy just changed sign sequences in game (which happens all the time) so players didn’t know he was getting his info from the replay room. Players did not know and coaches may not have known either. Plus absolutely none of this happened in the playoffs.
McGurk
I see the Astros whitewash brigade has a new member. Yawn…. We have heard it before “everyone cheats” , the “Yankees and Sox did it too” … Tell you what produce the report that says that a non uniform personnel was relaying live in time signals to the batter and you might have a case. The info about the Sox was that they needed a player to get on base to relay their signals. Certainly nothing as in-depth as “Codebreaker”
ukpadre
Just wait until he finds out that Fiona and me do it in my van every Sunday!
Redwood13
Key words “may not have known” This was Mr Cora the one who set up the whole cheating scandal ,my bet is he did and most of the players did too
McGurk
It’s funny how Asterisk apologist try to smear other teams with their conspiracies, and the ol’ “well he must have known”, but as soon as people bring up a more likelier scenario like Altuve wearing a buzzer… They scream bloody murder, that there is no proof. Talk about hypocrites
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Give it a rest. Took them 6 months to strip the Sox of a second-round pick for video room violations. It has since come out that several other teams do the same thing with no punishment. End of story.
erauber
More than the Astros got for actually cheating
Redwood13
Beltran came from the Yankees he cheated in New York taking it to Houston, only player punished, was the ring leader and wouldn’t stop when told to do so ( by Brian Mccann) now moving on to Mr Cora the one who put the plan in affect and took the cheating on to Boston. The replay guy was the only one who did anything and no one else was involved. I have a bridge to sell you in San Fran Sense you are so blind to your teams in Boston and New York They cheated also OPEN your eyes and close your mouth
PapiElf
Don’t know who Jared Carr is but he did hit pretty good at Shepherd University in 2019. He seems to have made the jump to Barstool, though.
30 Parks
Kelly gets too much credit. Tired act.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
You’re right, but we love his gusto. He’s not afraid to cross the line and do what’s necessary in the mind of some. He’ll even hold his own in a fight.
Redwood13
And not say anything when his team cheats too What a guy!,,,
fox471 Dave
Yep really a tired act. One in a row. Kelly is a hero in LA. I have a picture of him on my mantle. Free Joe Kelly!
datrain021
That’s still like 15 games in a normal season. Too many games plus too much salary to forgo
DarkSide830
what a joke. what he did was both dangerous and unprofessional. 8 games was good.
socalbum
Still too long. Kelly and Players Association should have taken the grievance to arbitration.
johnrealtime
Hopefully all the Astro trollers will stop whining. Not likely but one can hope
DirtbagBlues
This victimized attitude from Astros fans is really getting cringe-worthy.
johnrealtime
Nice try but I’m not at not at all an astros fan
nick effing punto
The best part about a vaccine coming in the next year is that I can buy tickets to Stros games and yell bang bang before EVERY pitch. This is baseball man, we don’t let cheating get forgotten. Ask Shoeless Joe…even 80 years layer his ghost is played by a mobster
Redwood13
What did you do with all the Steroid cheaters then?? Oh I guess you forgot about them in the 1980 threw 1990’s That cheated, almost every team had a few players But oh they were on your team that was ok right?
McGurk
Individual players were boo’ed mercilessly. What to do when a whole organization systematically cheats by virtue of using non uniform personnel to directly effect in game results in real time tho?
GreenWood Porter
Haters will hate. All the trendy “cool kids” hate Houston these days.
Just a bunch of conformist robots who can’t think for themselves.
myaccount
Lmao yeah, it’s just “conformist” to hate cheating… as if cheating hasn’t been hated for the entirety of modern civilization when it comes to gambling, board games, cards, sports, etc. Quit with the “poor Houston fans” mentality. Your team has a trophy they don’t deserve for their fake title.
johnrealtime
I just can’t get worked up about what the astros did. Everyone steals signs, they just went a little further. It sucks but I’m Ready to move on
McGurk
To put it to you in simpler terms. Billy Hamilton is an excellent Base Runner. He would be an elite CF if he could put up an OBP near arround .360 to .380 unfortunately for him in order to really maximize his base running talent he really does need to get on base. Because no matter how fast he is, if he can’t get on base, he can’t make use of his talent.
Throughout the years, I’m sure there have been players that have been excellent at deciphering signs and relaying them to their teammates. The key component had always been that in order to make use of their skill, like Billy Hamilton, they need to be in a position to make use of their unique skills. They couldn’t give their brains, insights, and intuition to their teammates that are on base anymore than Billy Hamilton could give his speed to say Joey Votto.
Enter the Astros, who through the use of technology, were able to get all the benefits of decoding and relaying signs without the need to actually have a player on base… Or on the field for that matter. Imagine Billy Hamilton got a free base every atbat…
johnrealtime
Yeah I’m aware of how sign stealing works. I just can’t get myself worked up about what they did. The team was punished and I’m ready to move on. I really think we will find out in twenty years (when Current players are retired) that half the league was doing similar things. Everyone saw how much the astros were hosed by fans and the league and the would-be-Mike fiers oh other teams quickly shut their mouths
bradthebluefish
Five is tolerable. Especially as a relief pitcher.
BigGiantHead
FREE JOE KELLY!!!!!
DirtbagBlues
This makes more sense. He had to be suspended but 5 games is more in line with precedent. Tacking on extra for “taunting” was just stupid. Was that pouty face really any worse than the stuff Brian McCann and Madison Bumgardner pull on a regular basis?
JustCheckingIn
It’s usually 5 in a regular season. This is the equivalent to 14 almost 15 games
It’s far from in line with Precedent
DirtbagBlues
The real penalty is loss of pay for those games. Given the salaries are being pro-rated it doesn’t matter that it’s a short season.
JustCheckingIn
When was the last time a guy got suspended for 13.5 games (Kelly’s 5 game of 60 is 8.3% of season, 13.5 is that amount of full schedule)….
…While not hitting a guy with a pitch, without throwing a punch, without even being the one who instigated the interaction…
But because he made a face. It’s BS he was suspended at all. He was suspended because Correa and his coaches first yelled at him, then THEY ran onto the field to confront him after his face. That’s not him instigating lol
Watch the video. ANY other team, theres no suspension here. Zero. It’d be a reliever with a bad shoulder having bad command.
It’s targeted 100% BS
JustCheckingIn
The ball “at” Correa’s “head” ends up where his elbow was when Kelly released the pitch. Aka, right in the back
He wasn’t throwing at the head. The Astros were being melodramatic and it worked. It literally is directly at his elbow! They just throw themselves on the floor. Broadway would be impressed
AndyMeyer
He knew exactly what he was doing. Dude couldn’t
throw strikes. 3-0 to Bregman than sails one behind his head, proceeds to yawn on the mound than tries to “pick him off” first by firing fastballs at his rib cage. Still can’t pitch by walking a guy on 4 pitches then gets behind Correa and fires a fastball at his head. The pitches “got away from you”? He makes a face? Grow up Joe. Old saying, “nobody likes a smart ass”
All it showed me was Joe Kelly can’t pitch and he took it upon himself to cover that up by being a tough guy. Just walk off the mound. You got out of the inning.
Quit complaining and defending this guy just because he plays for your team
Redwood13
Comish wanted to get the point across so others won’t do the same
LetGoOfMyLeg
Do players still receive a salary and accrue service time when suspended?
DirtbagBlues
Service time I believe so but not sure. Salary no.
Fred McGriff
Joe Kelly got more than what looters and criminals get in some places. That says it all.
shibbynotdude
I love that it says that the suspension also had to do with his taunting. What about the Astros taunting? Joe Kelly was responding to Correa. He had his foot stepped on and when he asked wtf? You can clearly hear someone yelling from the Astros dugout “get back on the mound you skinny little…”
GreenWood Porter
Terrible decision. Now more pitchers will try to injure hitters. Good job MLB! It’s okay to come down hard when it’s a popular decision to punish the most hated city in America, but when a pitcher puts a player’s health at risk they go easy on him by reducing his suspension which should have been the entire season!!!
JustCheckingIn
Suck it. He didn’t hit an Astro, missed 3 more times at that exact same level, over the plate
Oh and now is on the IL for shoulder inflammation after walking a batter in about every appearance he has this year
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Manfred writes that Watkins “on at least some occasions during the 2018 regular season, utilized the game feeds in the replay room, in violation of MLB regulations, to revise sign sequence information that he had permissibly provided to players prior to the game.”
Joe Kelly knew about this taking place…..did nothing and said nothing.
It’s funny watching hypocrites chastise the Astros …. but excuse Joe Kelly for not ratting out the Red Sox.
Cheater is a cheater. Guilt by association. Applies to the Astros. Applies to Joe Kelly and the Red Sox. Applies to all organizations who do not come forth and report cheating, but let it continue.
Course most people will say “but others were doing it…..” to justify the bad behavior. Don’t be that loser to justify cheating.
Hypocrites amuse me. If it wasn’t for double standards you all wouldn’t have any standards at all.
JustCheckingIn
You do realize multiple teams made multiple reports to the commissioner officer OVER MULTIPLE SEASONS but Commish office claimed they were too vague to investigate? Brewers, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Indians all reportedly made reports. The dodgers publicly warned Washington, the team they just lost to, about Houston pre World Series
Don’t say teams didn’t say anything when the commissioner’s office is to blame. Teams aren’t supposed to have to Investigate teams themselves fully to report cheating and have the Commish take it seriously. Know your stuff before pointing fingers
Jordan 5
Maybe he can take those 5 days and figure out his control. Has great stuff but also no idea where it’s going
Briffle2
Anyone see Kelly’s recent comments about the Astros? Sounds like he’s more upset that they talked and got immunity then the actual cheating. Makes sense, since he was part of the 18 Red Sox. Kelly just got downgraded in my book for those comments.
