Joe Kelly Suspension Reduced On Appeal

By Jeff Todd | August 12, 2020 at 5:26pm CDT

Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly has succeeded in appealing his eight-game suspension. The ban will now span five contests. Jared Carrabis of Barstool Sports first reported the news on Twitter, with Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com confirming that report (via Twitter).

Kelly was suspended after a well-publicized bench-clearing incident during a game with the Astros. He was deemed to have thrown in the area of the head of Houston third baseman Alex Bregman. The suspension also reflected Kelly’s taunting thereafter.

More recently, Kelly hit the injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder. He’ll still need to serve out his suspension once he’s ready for activation, though it seems possible the Dodgers will be able to manage the timing to blunt the impact of the ban.

I figured it would get reduced. He didn’t actually hit anybody. But he did enough to warrant a sit down.

    I’m good with this.

Kelly gave baseball fans a very small amount of justice, it’s a shame the powers that be are such soft cowards these days and suspend him for doing something the Astros earned when they cheated baseball as a whole

Yes. A pitcher that was on the 2018 Red Sox that also cheated and Kelly didn’t speak up about his team cheating its way to a world series served those cheating Astros justice.

Five games is the equivalent of 13-14 games in a 162 game season. Way too much. At least the Dodgers can have him come back from IL even if he’s not ready and then he can serve the five games.

Joe Kelly should have reported his teammates and organization for utilizing decoded opponents signals.

Instead Kelly sat by like all the rest and continued to let his teammates and organization cheat by using decoded signals.

We have heard it before “everyone cheats” , the “Yankees and Sox did it too” … Tell you what produce the report that says that a non uniform personnel was relaying live in time signals to the batter and you might have a case. The info about the Sox was that they needed a player to get on base to relay their signals. Certainly nothing as in-depth as “Codebreaker”

The replay guy was the only one who did anything and no one else was involved. I have a bridge to sell you in San Fran Sense you are so blind to your teams in Boston and New York They cheated also OPEN your eyes and close your mouth

To put it to you in simpler terms. Billy Hamilton is an excellent Base Runner. He would be an elite CF if he could put up an OBP near arround .360 to .380 unfortunately for him in order to really maximize his base running talent he really does need to get on base. Because no matter how fast he is, if he can’t get on base, he can’t make use of his talent.

Throughout the years, I’m sure there have been players that have been excellent at deciphering signs and relaying them to their teammates. The key component had always been that in order to make use of their skill, like Billy Hamilton, they need to be in a position to make use of their unique skills. They couldn’t give their brains, insights, and intuition to their teammates that are on base anymore than Billy Hamilton could give his speed to say Joey Votto.

Enter the Astros, who through the use of technology, were able to get all the benefits of decoding and relaying signs without the need to actually have a player on base… Or on the field for that matter. Imagine Billy Hamilton got a free base every atbat…

Yeah I’m aware of how sign stealing works. I just can’t get myself worked up about what they did. The team was punished and I’m ready to move on. I really think we will find out in twenty years (when Current players are retired) that half the league was doing similar things. Everyone saw how much the astros were hosed by fans and the league and the would-be-Mike fiers oh other teams quickly shut their mouths

When was the last time a guy got suspended for 13.5 games (Kelly’s 5 game of 60 is 8.3% of season, 13.5 is that amount of full schedule)….

…While not hitting a guy with a pitch, without throwing a punch, without even being the one who instigated the interaction…

But because he made a face. It’s BS he was suspended at all. He was suspended because Correa and his coaches first yelled at him, then THEY ran onto the field to confront him after his face. That’s not him instigating lol

Watch the video. ANY other team, theres no suspension here. Zero. It’d be a reliever with a bad shoulder having bad command.

          It’s targeted 100% BS

The ball “at” Correa’s “head” ends up where his elbow was when Kelly released the pitch. Aka, right in the back

He wasn’t throwing at the head. The Astros were being melodramatic and it worked. It literally is directly at his elbow! They just throw themselves on the floor. Broadway would be impressed

He knew exactly what he was doing. Dude couldn’t
throw strikes. 3-0 to Bregman than sails one behind his head, proceeds to yawn on the mound than tries to “pick him off” first by firing fastballs at his rib cage. Still can’t pitch by walking a guy on 4 pitches then gets behind Correa and fires a fastball at his head. The pitches “got away from you”? He makes a face? Grow up Joe. Old saying, “nobody likes a smart ass”
All it showed me was Joe Kelly can’t pitch and he took it upon himself to cover that up by being a tough guy. Just walk off the mound. You got out of the inning.
Quit complaining and defending this guy just because he plays for your team

Terrible decision. Now more pitchers will try to injure hitters. Good job MLB! It’s okay to come down hard when it’s a popular decision to punish the most hated city in America, but when a pitcher puts a player’s health at risk they go easy on him by reducing his suspension which should have been the entire season!!!

Manfred writes that Watkins “on at least some occasions during the 2018 regular season, utilized the game feeds in the replay room, in violation of MLB regulations, to revise sign sequence information that he had permissibly provided to players prior to the game.”

Joe Kelly knew about this taking place…..did nothing and said nothing.

It’s funny watching hypocrites chastise the Astros …. but excuse Joe Kelly for not ratting out the Red Sox.

Cheater is a cheater. Guilt by association. Applies to the Astros. Applies to Joe Kelly and the Red Sox. Applies to all organizations who do not come forth and report cheating, but let it continue.

Course most people will say “but others were doing it…..” to justify the bad behavior. Don’t be that loser to justify cheating.

Hypocrites amuse me. If it wasn’t for double standards you all wouldn’t have any standards at all.

You do realize multiple teams made multiple reports to the commissioner officer OVER MULTIPLE SEASONS but Commish office claimed they were too vague to investigate? Brewers, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Indians all reportedly made reports. The dodgers publicly warned Washington, the team they just lost to, about Houston pre World Series

Don’t say teams didn’t say anything when the commissioner’s office is to blame. Teams aren’t supposed to have to Investigate teams themselves fully to report cheating and have the Commish take it seriously. Know your stuff before pointing fingers
