Angels To Acquire Dexter Fowler

By Connor Byrne | February 4, 2021 at 9:28pm CDT

9:57pm: The Angels are receiving $12.75MM in the deal, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times tweets.

9:28pm: The Angels will acquire switch-hitting outfielder Dexter Fowler from the Cardinals, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Along with Fowler, they’re getting cash considerations from the Cardinals, per an announcement from the Halos. That makes it clear this is a salary dump on the Cards’ part. Fowler waived a no-trade clause to make this swap possible.

The Cardinals signed Fowler to a five-year, $82.5MM contract before the 2017 campaign, but the former Rockie, Astro and Cub hasn’t necessarily lived up to the deal so far. Fowler, who will turn 35 next month, batted .233/.334/.408 with 49 home runs and 21 stolen bases in 1,500 plate appearances as a Redbird. He’s owed another $14.5MM in 2021, the final year of his deal, but the Cardinals are moving on after acquiring former Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado’s massive contract earlier this week. Harrison Bader, Tyler O’Neill and Dylan Carlson look as if they’ll be the team’s starting outfielders in 2021.

Fowler should be a stopgap for the Angels, who have the preeminent player in the game in center fielder Mike Trout. Left fielder Justin Upton is also still in the fold, while high-end prospects Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh haven’t established themselves in the bigs yet. Fowler, who played under now-Angels manager Joe Maddon as a Cub, should keep the seat warm in right until one of those two are ready to take over for good.

“We think there’s a lot left in the tank,” Angels general manger Perry Minasian said of Fowler (via Nightengale).

Don’t count on it. Fowler’s contract has been pretty bad for his lack of production over the past three seasons.

He could be talking from the Angels point of view. If they’re going to take on that contract for a player they don’t seem to need, they should be getting something good with Fowler.

Unless they’re sending a bad contract back to STL. Pujols back to the Cards? Lol

I’m guessing Perry is waiting till next year when pujols deal is gone to go spending. All the deals he has traded for or signed are 1 year in term. Next years free agent class looks stellar both in pitching and positionally.

          Fixed it for you..lol

Seriously though, not only are the Cardibals likely not getting anything back, they’re likely handing over a HEFTY sum of money as well!!

The Angels will like take on Fowler and his contract, but the Cardinals are likely going to send the Angels roughly about 10mil..

IF that’s the case, THEN I could see the Cardinals maybe getting back a lottery ticket, like a 22 yr old, Single A or High A relief pitcher with a high K rate, but one that also has some command issues..

But, if it is anything less than 10 mil, then the Cardinals aren’t getting squat..

Yeah, Cards are stealing the show lately. It seems like a lot of teams have been making series’ of moves in kind of a burst, or whatever.

Anyway, this coincides with the earlier report here of them being “in on” Odorizzi.

Sign Odorizzi & Schoop & maybe Duval & the Cardinals would look pretty good.

Stealing the show? They just sent fowler to the angels eating almost all his salary…..

There outfield really stinks if you are relying on badder 111 ops + and O’Neil 90 ops +, better hope carlson is legit real quick.

Rotation is also extremely bad relying on the corpse of wainwright and miles mikolas’ albatross contract.

Whats hillarious is if arenado craters and opts in cards are finished for the next decade.

Arenado opts in early, does well in year 1, team does not. Then he pushes for a trade again for a couple seasons. That’d be kinda hilarious too.

Yea everyone jacking off to the cards is perplexing. Rotation is not as good as some suggest and an of of Bader, O’Neil, Carson is quite underwhelming. Better hope Carson becomes a stud Quick. Looked like he still has some developing to do based off last season.

@cards81 prospects are prospects until they aren’t. You can talk till your blue in the face bottomline is cards current mlb roster is thin at almost every position so much so that they trade for a huge contract player coming off his worst season to date. If you think arenado will be the second coming of goldy you should take a look at career splits home and away and then reassess if that’s really worth 30 million per season. So when he craters to a .250 hitter and ops in as his defense slips the cards with be standing there paying the large sum.

Cards played the worst competition last season (just look at the offenses in the central in 2020 made darvish and bauer look like aces) and they barely made playoffs. I get your a cards fan but try to be less of a homer and more of a realist

@cubsfoever22 exactly. They make one move for a guy at his lowest point and automatically forget how terrible their rotation is (so much that they had to bring back rag arm wainwright) and at almost every position outside of first base and hopefully third base. While that might be enough to get in playoffs because there no clear cut contender in central they have no chance against padres, dodgers, Mets, Braves and even nationals…

Once again…he had some troubles in the beginning but overcame them and showed he was ready…plus it was a weird season…he was hot in spring training before everything got shut down…” He barely resembles the guy who was demoted in early September to their alternate camp, hitting .162 with a .215 on-base percentage and .243 slugging percentage, leaving Cardinals Nation to wonder if their No. 1 prospect was nothing more than an over-hyped suspect.

“The first time around,’’ Carlson said, “there was a lot going on. A lot of different voices, different things.

“The big thing for me to focus on was being myself, playing my game.’’

Carlson hit .277 with four doubles, a triple and two homers in the final nine days of the season, ”

You can count on one thing next season, and that is Arenado playing some excellent defense, hitting anywhere from .280+, knocking out 30 some odd bombs, and driving in more than his fair share of runs..

The Cardinals also have quite a few intriguing, young arms they could use to piggyback off their starters out of the pen. Genesis Cabrera has shown some flashes, Seth Elledge has shown he has some quality stuff, and Junior Fernandez has some electric, strikeout stuff, and if he can work on his command, he could be downright filthy..

Jack Flaherty and Dakota Hudson are both most certainly the real deal, and they’ve proven themselves to be two bonafide TOR pitchers on a contender. Also, John Gant has proven himself to be an extremely underrated arm that can come out of the oen for multiple innings, or he could be an effective opener and give the Cardinals three to four solid innings. Then, you cannot forget about the human flamethrower that is Jordan Hicks that should be coming back, and he and Kim should be able to both lockdown the backend of their pen.

Also, two big pieces of their 2021 puzzle very well could be Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes. There’s no doubt that they’re both two of the most talented pitchers in baseball, when they’re healthy. This upcoming season, Martinez and Reyes should finally be back to their former selves, and they very well could combine with Flaherty and Hudson to makeup one of the best foursomes in the NL. Now, that’s definitely a big IF, but with the likes of the aforementioned Gant and Cabrera, the Cardinals can start out using them both slowly, having them function as relative openers. They can ride Martinez and Reyes for the first 3-4 innings, and then they can turn to Cabrera, Gant, Ponce De Leon, etc. and one of those guys can work the next two or so innings handing the ball off to Miller, Kim, and Hicks to close things out..

With Hudson, Flaherty, Martinez, Reyes, Gant, Cabrera, and then the ever so steady Mikolas the Cardinals are easily setup to have plenty of quality rotation options..They won’t need Mikolas to pitch like an ace, all he will need to do is go out every 5th day and just give them a quality start, and Mikolas is more than capable of handling that easily..

Plus, speaking of Mr. Reliable, the Cardinals will still have Adam Wainwright basically functioning as their 5th starter..The Cardinals are going to be loaded with quality starting pitching options with Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, Wainwright, and then they can use Martinez and Reyes as openers working a six man rotation with guys like Cabrera, Gant, Ponce De Leon, Gallegos, etc. piggybacking of those two, then shutting the door with the likes of Miller, Kim, and Hicks..

The Cardinals aren’t going to need an all-world offense to get the job done, theyll just need some timely hitting from some of their guys, but they’re also going to be playing some excellent defense along the way too..

Between Arenado, Goldy, DeJong, Carpenter, Yadi/Knizer, Edman, Bader, and possibly some combination of O’Neil, Carlson, and Dean, the Cardinals should be able to score plenty enough runs to win themselves their fare share of games and come out on top of the NL Central..They also have a kid named Sosa that could come up this season and he could possobly add some pop to the Cardinals lineup if they need it. However, with three capable All-Stars in Arenado, DeJong, and Goldy they sh ou old be able to carry this offense. Just as long as the Cardinals get some timely hits from its supporting cast, and especially with a bounceback from Carpenter and Yadi, there won’t be all that much pressure on their outfield to score a bunch of runs. Even so, I think some of their guys like Edman, O’Neil, Bader, and Carlson they’re more than capable of breaking out and truly extending the quality and overall depth of their lineup.

The Cardinals mix of excellent pitching, quality defense, and with their offense improving they’re the easy favorites to take the Central crown. I would be ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED if the season ends and the Cardinals aren’t in first place above the Brewers, Cubs, Reds, and Pirates…(likely in that order)

Hudson went down with TJ last year and won’t pitch this year…but the cardinals will be fine and according to rumors will sign another pitcher…2. The out field will be O’Neill, Bader and Carlson unless they sign someone else or another talented minor league player takes their spot(possibly Dean)…3. Carpenter is done unless their is a DH…

Fowler to LAA? Well John started pulling some string or what? Cardinals will be sending a good chunk of cash to Angels to cover the last year of Fowlers contract. Wonder if anyone else is involved? Good thing, they needed to dump Fowler or Carpenter. Having two players perform at sub replacement level making over 30 million combined is a bad place to be in if your making the playoffs. Sad it didn’t work out with Fowler in STL. Great dude, wish him the best.

John Mozeliak plays the game with honor and dignity. They didn’t just release Dexter Fowler out of respect for him. He showed up, did charitable things for the community, was a good teammate, and a respected presence in the Cardinals Club House. Yeah you could just release him but why do that when you can do good by another person?

They didn’t release to save a million bucks, give me a break. He could of chose any team in league to play for once he cleared waivers. They found a team that would pay a million dollars over league minimum, end story.

The Angels are getting Fowler for 2021 for something like 2-3m, to be their 5th OFer.

Fowler has been replacement level for the last 3 seasons, and he’ll be 35 in 2021. This is a dump. The Angels will be sending back their #35 prospect, surely.

Maybe Ohtani real be great, but will only pitch on Sundays.

Best play I saw Daddy Long Legs make in a Cardinals uniform came in the 2019 NLDS against the Braves. It was on the bases, he slid around a tag and just barely held onto the bag. That was crazy. Statistically speaking hes been one of the worst RF in baseball past few years. They complain about his contract cause the Cardinals could have been paying anyone of Arozerena, Mercado, O’neil, or Thomas a 1/4th of the payroll and get the same level of production if not better. The first two were traded because they were blocked by the Fowler Contract, Ozuna trade, or other players the Cardinals were higher on than them. Mercado would have been great in STL for the 2018 season, Arozarena for the 2020 season. That’s why they are upset.

This is exactly why we are upset in STL. Most fans are just jealous that Arozerena and Ozuna left and thrived in their new roles. Fans look at Dex and have that “what if” thought. He is a great guy off the field and most fans that I know liked him for his personality, but you had the residual groan when he stepped up to the plate. I wish him all the best. Maybe he can get back up to an average player in LA.

At their current salary allocation, Bellinger is more valuable than Trout. It matters. The Angels can’t build a winner because they have $116 million/year tied to four players (Trout, Rendon, Pujols, Upton). Friedman is proving to be brilliant when it comes to managing payroll. It is a big reason why the Dodgers should remain a contender for a long while.

Nah Dodgers homer, its Mike Trout. They need a legit ace in the return.

Trout is literally worth any 5-10 players from any team. You are undervaluing him, give it up. The wild part is the Dodgers could do any 5 players for him including Betts and Bellinger and still be the best team in the NL, because then they would have MIKE TROUT.

Realistically Bellinger, Buehler, May and Lux are a package that could definitely happen.

Your also missing the point bellinger is almost as good as trout is alone! Bellinger had a 10 war season in 19’ adding lux and may (potential ace) is more than enough especially considering dodgers would be absorbing an additional 35 million per season. Judging by the trades so far for super stars including arenado it won’t cost as much as you think.

That would be a terrible trade for the Dodgers. Over the last four years, they have gone to three World Series, won a championship, and chugged along at a 102-win pace…without Trout. They have gotten better every year and figure to have perhaps their best team in 2021. Why would they trade an MVP, a lights-out p0st-season SP, a second SP, and a quality middle infielder for one guy? If Trout was that good, the Angels would be making deep runs every year. Btw, using the word “literally” where it’s not needed doesn’t make your proposal and smarter. It’s a dumb trade idea. Period. Why would the Dodgers trade four good players not yet in their prime for one player near the end of his? Building a winner in baseball doesn’t work that way, especially when the team giving up the four is already an established winner.

Pete Rose doesn’t rank with the greatest of the greats.

          Career WAR
          Rose 79.7 in 3,562 games
          Trout: 74.6 in 1,252. games

In Reds history, Rose ranks behind, Bench, Morgan, and Robinson by a wide margin. The ultimate stat accumulator. What evidence supports your contention that Rose ranks with Mays and Trout?

Won’t argue with your list or logic for the most part, but no one is replacing Ruth as the GOAT.

One stat alone makes this clear- his .690 Career Slugging. There is seldom even one player who slugs .690 during a single season.

WAR isn’t the end all / be all stat, but look at how far ahead Ruth is of some really great players on your own list. He’s double Clemente and a 150% of Williams. He’s 10% better than Any player in histor!

Trout will likely crack the top 10 or 20 if he stays healthy. How far up the list is still not certain, but he has a good start. For perspective- he has 45% of the WAR Ruth does. (75 vs 182 from bb ref). So if he doubles his career WAR it’s 150 which would be 7th all time. Then all he has to add is 30 more to get to 2nd place. 30 more is only 40% percent of his current career After doubling his current career WAR. That’s how ridiculously good Ruth was.

Actually, I think trading Trout makes sense so they can build a better team overall. Bellinger is about as valuable as Trout so a trade involving Bellingers makes no sense.,, I could see… Lux, Ruiz, Gray, DJ Peters for Trout. Fair for both teams IMO. Angels get a future all star Catcher in Ruiz, Lux a great young young IF, top SP prospect in Gray and a Trout replacement in Peters

Bellinger is better defensively, faster, younger, just entering his prime. Trout is likely nearing the end of his prime. The Dodgers have zero need to make such a dumb trade.

Totally agree Trout turning 30 and definitely nearer to the end of his prime, but he’ll probably still out produce, on average and in total, Bellinger for the rest of both of their careers.

For instance – Trout avg 7.5 WAR over 10 years and Bellinger 4.7. Bellinger is very good for 4 years and could be for a long time. Trout is in the All Time great conversation and has been for 10 years. Bellinger could project to top 50 all time WAR if he maintains 4.7 WAR for another ~14 years or age 39. Trout can be top 20 with 9 years of 4 WAR or age 39.

It’s a risky move that the dodgers wouldn’t ever need to consider because they’ve built a sustainable powerhouse that generally stays below the tax line and staying below the tax line is how you stay sustainable.

How can you “hate this deal?” The Cardinals are taking on most of the contract and the Angels fill a hole on their roster. He doesn’t make them exceed the cap, so the only reason you would “hate this deal” is if you cared that Arte is going to spend a few extra million this offseason. This doesn’t hurt the team at all, it just helps Adell and Marsh get more time in the minors.

Good rule of thumb is to wait for the full deal to be announced before posting who won or lost the trade but that rule is broke be nearly everyone here. Usually doesn’t matter, if one team gets established expensive player they win the trade in the simpletons eyes no matter what they gave up or how much the guy makes.

The moves Perry has made this year have set the Angels up for a complete rebuild in 2022 while still being “competitive” in 2021. The AL West is also going to be bad in 2021, so the Angels could maybe win the division. You don’t have to believe it, but that’s what the Angels FO must be thinking with all these 1 year deals this offseason.

It gets a lot harder to sign/trade for players when their contract has to expire in 2022. What would you have done instead, keeping in mind that the Angels are only interested in acquiring players who will be free agents next offseason?

O’Day instead of Claudio. Richards or Paxton instead of Quintana or Cobb. Since the Reds dropped Bradley, I would have gotten on the phone and included him in the deal and taken less money. Win-Win. And if Richards got hurt I can pretty much guarantee you that the innings of Barria and Richards will be better than the innings of the other two.

The Angels have added players to take up spots and missed opportunities to add useful players.

The only thing I can think of after 11’s defense info is service time. Getting an extra cost controlled year of both guys is valuable.

Right field was brutal last year, anyway. Even getting up to neutral would be a boost. Or close to neutral.

Geez, I guess I can agree with that thinking. But at the same time, I have to believe that Minasian could’ve done better in terms of defense and/or offensive potential. Heck, I suspect even Taylor Ward would be better – and we already have him in the fold, without tying up another roster spot…

He’s a decent get at $1.75mil. Especially if it frees Perry to go out and acquire what all you impatient fans want – cheap controllable pitching. It’s amazing how foolish so many prior comments are when more details of this deal surface.

Why are you so sour on Fowler? Last year he only played 31 games and had a bad year, just like a lot of decent players. In 2019 he put up 1.7WAR. If he puts up half of that he’s a bargain at $1.75. And it allows Perry to deal one of the young outfielders for pitching. You might want to let things play out a bit, a lot of your posts don’t age well.

Sorry, I was looking at oWAR. He had basically his worst year of his career in 2018, but bounced back nicely in 2019 with 1.5WAR. That’s $12mil of worth of WAR. Even if he puts up 0.5War he’s still a bargain.

This man is Perry Minisian, and he has watched his newfound career melt away. Losing the help of employees, managers, and consumers he fell into a dark consumption of fear; ridiculed by fear itself. He clinches the last bottle he can feasibly reach for out of disregarded desperation, and the result of his storm and stress combined to take him to a place worse than fear itself. You seem inconsolable as always… Adell’s stock hasn’t gone anywhere, not with being rushed up during a pandemic-shortened season. He is what he is and scouts know it. And if he yields a front line starter with a good 2-3 years of control, then this move starts to make some sense. Otherwise, it’s just adding dead weight to a roster that has no room for it.

The options are not binary and the process is fraught with risks of all kinds, including hamstringing the Angels payroll for a decade to come. There are always options beyond the ones you can see assume you understand.

Full transparency, I don’t know the inner workings of the Angels’ budget, nor do I know every move they make and their motivation for it. That said, let me get this right:

    1) Angels desperately need SP above all else

    2) Angels are limited (even if self-imposed) in budget and thus are restricted in the amount they can spend this year, and pretty much every other

    3) Angels traded for a player who is neither a good defender nor a good hitter

    4) The aforementioned player has a fairly expensive contractual commitment that has now been transferred to the budged-conscious, cash-flow-limited Angels, who gained virtually no discernible advantage from this transaction.

That about sum it up accurately? If so, how can their own organizational hierarchy not recognize this failure in administration?

The Angels are basically getting Fowler for free and will pay him $2 mil. He will play for half a season while Adell and Marsh work on their games in AAA, by which time one of them will be ready to go…and their service time will have been set back.

And, if Fowler happens to be playing well, the Angels play him all season.

At such a low investment, this is a very good move by LAA. In fact, its not even an investment. Its merely shuffling money. The money they pay Fowler now will be reimbursed later by pushing back a youngsters service time clock.

Angels’ screaming need is SP, and they’re screwing around with Dexter Fowler? Aside from the fact that STL is eating most of his salary, the potential silver lining is that Fowler is today’s Candy Maldonado – world beater in walk years, shifts into coast mode the rest of the time.

He’s had two walk years in his whole career. 2015 and 2016. Yeah, no player in history has had two decent seasons in a row.

Why does the writer say the Cardinals will be sending the money in one sentence, and then the clubs have not confirmed the money in the next one. It can’t be both. Where I come from, “will be sending” is used to state a fact.

“The Cardinals will be sending $12.75 million to L.A. in the deal, a source told MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. The clubs have not confirmed the money being exchanged.”

It can absolutely be both. The money is changing hands regardless if each team has confirmed it in a press release or not. Sources are sources for a reason.

Good trade all around, really. Fowler at $1..75 mil is a decent bet and no loss really if he can’t manage a dead cat bounce. Otherwise, he buys development time for Adell/Marsh. Cards save a small amount but more importantly, free up an outfield spot for someone younger who may be able to play, whether that’s Lane Thomas, Justin Williams, Jhon Torres or even Tommy Edman (playing LF, Carlson in RF) if Carpenter shows his bat has anything left and he can play a tolerable 2B (both unlikely, but possible). And quite frankly, with the glut of relief pitchers out there on the market, that $1.75 mil could net someone of value.

    Reply
    • Lanidrac

But Fowler could already play a lot better in comparison to any of those younger options! Hoping for a Carpenter rebound or that any of those AAAA outfielders can finally figure it out is a HUGE gamble just to save $1.75M.

Wait, they traded him so they could save $1,750,000? I know he’s no longer an everyday guy, but couldn’t he still be at least a good off the bench player? I mean, the guy did hit 19 HR’s in 2019 and his OBP wasn’t terrible last year. I didn’t really watch the Cards last year so I don’t know how bad his defense has declined. However, could you go out and find the same production on the market for $1.75 mil?

    Per Cots Contracts:

Dexter Fowler signed by St. Louis as a free agent 12/8/16
    5 years/$82.5M (2017-21)

$10M signing bonus (paid in $1M installments on each July 1 and Oct. 1, 2017-21)

    17-21: $14.5M annually

Acquired by LA Angels in trade from St. Louis 2/4/21, with Angels responsible for $1.75M of Fowler’s 2021 salary and Cardinals paying $12.75M of his salary and both remaining signing bonus payments

So Cardinals end up paying $14.75M.

Fowler as an everyday player represented a hitter who struck out, failed to drive in runs and was reluctant to take walks….ie., poor hitter. Was not working as a Cardinal. Hopefully Fowler can reboot under Madden.

Well, this was pointless for the Cardinals! They’ve weakened the lineup and don’t even get much salary relief for it! While Fowler is overpaid, he’s still a decent player who’s currently a much better option than the likes of O’Neill and the others, and we’re not even sure yet if Carlson’s late season breakout was for real. They also lose a DH option if it returns to the NL this season. If anything, the Cardinals should be adding talent to their outfield, not subtracting from it!

Worst outfield in MLB. Cardinals outfielders Bader and O’Neil would not be starters on majority of MLB teams. All other outfielders are unproven. A veteran outfielder with consistent productivity would help. Ryan Braun (maybe not him) type on a 1- year deal.

Bader’s offense improved enough last year to where he deserves to be the starting CF. You’re absolutely right about O’Neill, though.

I read from multiple STL fans that Bader went on a tear in his last few games and that shot up his final line. He still struck out at a ridiculously high clip and I’d be highly skeptical whether he could keep that up.

That’s what I’m saying. The funniest ones for me are the “salary dump” posts. Call me crazy, but is 1.75m savings really a salary dump? Not for me, it’s just more or less freeing up a roster spot, and paying off the guy.

Maybe it could qualify as a salary dump if, you have a payroll of 50m like a few teams. We won’t mention those teams in all due respect. I guess their trying…. In making money. 😉

One more salary dump. Every team in MLB should hire me. Once a year, I can fly in for a meeting and say ‘Do you know xxx will be 35 when this contract ends?’.

Then I will tell them ‘Trade every FA contract halfway thru the contract, and there is a 95% chance you won’t regret it.’.

This is not a “trade” that moves the needle much for the Angels. But if you can get a guy with Fowler’s potential, and allow Adell and Marsh more time in the minors, for 1.75 mil, you do it in a heartbeat.

Props to Perry for realizing how desperate the Cards were to free up this roster spot.
