Giants Sign Aaron Sanchez

By Tim Dierkes | February 21, 2021 at 11:11am CDT

FEBRUARY 21: The deal has been made official. The incentive structure breaks down as follows (per Maria Guardado of MLB.com): $250K apiece for reaching 16 and 18 starts, $500K each for starting 20, 22, 24 and 26 games.

FEBRUARY 17: The Giants have reached an agreement to sign righty Aaron Sanchez, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.  It’s a $4MM deal with another $2.5MM in incentives, adds Slusser.  Sanchez is represented by the Boras Corporation.

Sanchez, 28, was drafted 34th overall out of high school by the Blue Jays back in 2010 as a supplemental pick for the loss of free agent Marco Scutaro.  He was still a few weeks shy of his 18th birthday upon being drafted.  Sanchez’s path from Barstow, California to being drafted by the Jays was chronicled in this excellent read from Stephen Brunt of Sportsnet.ca a few years back.

Sanchez’s prospect status climbed as he ascended through the minors, with Baseball America praising his “premium velocity with an effortless delivery.”  The Blue Jays eased Sanchez into the Majors in 2014 via the bullpen, and he even picked up three saves in his 24 appearances that year.

Marcus Stroman’s unfortunate ACL tear paved the way for Sanchez to make the Jays’ rotation out of camp in 2015, but after a summer lat strain that year he returned to the ’pen.  The following year Sanchez again won the team’s fifth starter job out of spring training, and this time he ran with it.  2016 still stands as the best year of Sanchez’s career, as he posted a 3.00 ERA in 192 innings, making the All-Star team and finishing seventh in the AL Cy Young voting.  In a year where the average starting pitcher managed a 20.2 K% and 7.7 BB%, Sanchez fell right around those marks at a 20.4 K% and 8.0 BB%.  He did succeed in limiting exit velocity and keeping the ball on the ground.  Despite concerns about Sanchez’s workload, which wound up increasing more than 100 innings over the prior year, the Blue Jays couldn’t bring themselves to pull him from the rotation despite a yearlong flirtation with the idea.

Sanchez would be limited to just eight starts in 2017 due to a blister/split fingernail that required four separate IL stints.  Further finger issues held him to 20 starts in 2018, culminating in season-ending surgery.  Sanchez battled through similar issues in 2019, making 27 starts on the season but averaging fewer than five innings per turn.  Sanchez was not able to replicate his previous success, posting a 5.45 ERA, lackluster 18.6 K%, and unfortunate 11.7 BB% across 2018-19.  By the 2019 trade deadline, the Blue Jays had seen enough, trading Sanchez to the Astros with Joe Biagini and Cal Stevenson for Derek Fisher.  Fisher’s Jays story coincidentally came to an end this week with a trade to the Brewers.

While it was thought that the Astros might work magic with Sanchez’s curveball and its 91st percentile spin rate, especially after his debut for the club was the first six innings of a combined no-hitter, the righty quickly went down for shoulder surgery and was non-tendered after the 2019 season.  Sanchez wasn’t heard from again until October 2020, when he held a showcase for 20 teams in Miami.  Agent Scott Boras would go on to boast of a 2,700-2,800 RPM fastball, speaking of Sanchez’s intent to work as a starter in 2021.  Sanchez must have shown well at a second showcase held this month, given the $4MM contract with the Giants.  Indeed, Slusser notes that “the Giants have been paying attention to [Sanchez] all off season and took especial notice last week, when Sanchez hit 98 mph in a bullpen session.”  Here’s the proof of that from Sanchez’s Instagram.

After another reclamation project gone well, Kevin Gausman, accepted his $18.9MM qualifying offer, the Giants went to work on their rotation this winter by adding Anthony DeSclafani  for $6MM (a teammate of Sanchez’s on the 2012 Lansing Lugnuts) and Alex Wood at $3MM on one-year free agent contracts.  While Sanchez will presumably round out the team’s starting five, no team is getting by with five starters – not this year, and not with this group.  The club also added Nick Tropeano on a minor league deal today, and Logan Webb figures to be in the mix as well.  Tyler Beede is expected to become an option around May after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

With pitchers and catchers already starting to report to spring training, there are still several rotation-worthy starting pitchers on the free agent market, including Jake Odorizzi, Taijuan Walker, Rick Porcello, Cole Hamels, and Mike Leake.  It’s been an odd winter for starting pitching.  Aside from Trevor Bauer, who signed for three years and $102MM, no starting pitcher has landed as much as $20MM.  The last time fewer than three starting pitchers received a $20MM guarantee in an offseason was 2009-10,  when only John Lackey and Randy Wolf achieved it.

the last time he’s pitched more than 40 innings with an ERA under 4.89 was 2016. I can understand the signing, but not the $4M guarantee with current market conditions.

which ones are bad? I mean no one has signed for much outside of gausman accepting the QO which was done to cement a spot in the rotation when the rest was depleted and the rest are mostly on 1 yr deals with a couple on 2 year deals – it isn’t like anyone will be a big deal if they don’t pan out and if they do and can become trade bait you can get guys for the rebuild

One year deals and replacing 4 starters (Gausamn, Cueto, DeSclafani and Wood) in 2022 is not rebuilding it’s “kicking the can down the road.”

When it comes to managing payroll, Friedman and Zaidi are master bookkeepers. Complainer Giants fans need to understand how important that is. An improved farm system will only help in that regard. Develop your own players instead of spending a gazillion on free agents.

The Giants hired the right guy, who then hired Kapler as the team’s field manager. Regardless of what some Giants fans think, I believe these hires will work out fine. Pay no attention to the Negative Nellies. Every team has them. There’s a faction of Dodger fans who want “Fraudman” and Roberts fired. Best of luck to the Giants this season. I look forward to the day when the rivalry crazy is competitive. It won’t take long.

Huge Giants fan and I also agree how sad it is. However, the same ones crying the song also did so with Sabean before the 3 championships and then they praised him as a god lol! Zaidi is making progress faster than most of not all right now. It’s impressive if you really know the game from top to bottom and see the whole picture. I am excited to see next off-season and hope a couple of our top prospects kill it!

This season isn’t a make or break year for Zaidi. He’s done a phenomenal job considering the mess he inherited (contractually). Posey didn’t play last year & we had a very productive offense. And Zaidi didn’t have to sign any long term mega deals. Instead, SF had a very capable offense with guys like Yaz, Dickerson, & even Wilmer had a nice year. Then he got new batting coaches that woke the Brandon’s up & got them out of their 2 year slumps. And now SF has some big time prospects, I believe Luciano is going to be a superstar. Zaidi has done great

I think there is a big split on Zaidi – don’t think it is half though. People that don’t pay attention to baseball as a whole and don’t understand what he is doing feel like it is ruthless to just sign and dump guys and to not sign big ticket guys, which I don’t understand because I am sure they were also complaining about zito and rowand and the other bad contracts that brought the org steps back when they happened. I think once you start seeing wins people will have a little different opinions, not all but some and the rest – eh it is what it is.

@whormongr You are right about the divide amongst fans. However, the true Giants fans will recall Zito’s 2012 NLCS shutout and his miracle bunt single in Busch Stadium with the team down 3-1 and his W in the WS soon after. Even Rowand was 3 for 11 with a huge triple in the 2010 run.

That’s the same with every team’s fan. Some RS fans don’t understand any signing for less than $20M/per. I’ve seen NYM fans complaing that Cohen isn’t doing enough. Most LAD fans in here complained about Friedman for years.

I’m also guessing that most of the complainers know who the top 5 FAs are, and little underneath that.

        • Richard H.

I agree & you bring up really good points. I admit, I thought SF shoulda grabbed Castinallos (I know I’m spelling that wrong), but Cincy picked him up last year. But SF would’ve had to commit a lot of $$ & 5 years. Now I’m glad they didn’t (even though Nick Cast.) had a good year. SF isn’t winning the World Series this year, so whythrow down hundreds of millions on 5+ year contracts on 30-year old vets? Keep competing with what you have, build the farm, then when Luciano, Bart, Ramos, Bishop, & Wilson & those guys are primed, Zaidi is going to have a ton of money to grab FA to supplement those guys. Those that say Zaidi’s scared to pull the trigger on a big FA in case he tanks.. first off, he seemed to offer Bryce Harper a mega deal, second, every GM is going to sign FA’s that end up sucking, & last, why make a big splash now, so instead of winning 82 games, we win 85. LA & SD are head & shoulders above us…right now. But, be patient because Zaidi has them much further along than people think. We have 5 prospects in the top 100 (1 that might be 1 of the best players in baseball in 5 years) we’ll have a ton of money to spend

@Baseball1600, I’ve been a Giants fan all my life, and I love Farhan. Evans and Sabean put together the pieces for 3 championships in 5 years to a starved franchise. I thanked Brian Sabean for that personally on spring. However, it really was time for a new direction. Moves like this are smart. The Giants will be relevant in 2021.

His movement on the sinker really changed for the worse the last couple of years he pitched. He couldn’t locate, would fall behind in counts, try to guide one in the zone and get hit hard. It’s hard to really know how much of that was related to the blisters. Not hard imagine they played a huge role in it. But he also had always had questions about his command. I’ve always been frustrated with him because he’s a groundball guy but refuses to or can’t throw strikes. I love groundball pitchers because they can move a game along and give the bullpen some rest, but he throws a lot of pitches per inning and it’s a tough watch. Every once in a while, he’ll put a couple 3 up 3 down innings on 10 pitches together and you see what he could be at his best.

I’m a little surprised that he didn’t end up in Atlanta with AA. He knows him well from his Toronto days, and I believe he drafted Sanchez. He would look really good in the bullpen as a high leverage arm or even as a closer to keep the wear & tear down on his arm.

AA knew first hand that Sanchez couldn’t be relied upon for more than half a season. After a year off as well recovering from surgery. Half a season might be a reach.

As long as he is keeping his hands in a glass dome ala Zoolander and lotions between pitches. He might be able to go 1/3 of a season.

Boras did a hell of job getting this kid $4M guaranteed after 4 straight years of injuries and bad pitching. I wish I could hire him to help me negotiate my salary. I’d gladly pay him 5-8% for doing so. I thought Sanchez’s ceiling was $1M-$2M maximum in guaranteed salary with sizable incentives based on innings pitched. (Much like a Colin McHugh). Good for him for getting $4M +! If he pitches well this season, he’ll make a lot of money next year in free agency. I always liked the kid despite all of the finger issues. When on, he has nasty stuff.

I have been following Aaron Sanchez career for years and correctly calling his injury issues.

And this post is no different.

Sanchez has one of the most high torque pitching motions that I have ever seen. His hands are softer and his fingers cannot take the kinetic energy of spinning the ball.

On the positive side his hand and fingers have healed in the downtime. Sadly though his shoulder issues are not behind him. He should start very strong with the Giants, but how long he lasts is well, doubtful.

The Jays and Boras medical did a lousy job of diagnosing his issues back when he was a BlueJay and similar is happening now. I hope he does well and stays healthy but from what I hear its all temporary. Its a shame because Aaron Sanchez has electric stuff.

I like this signing but am surprised at how much guaranteed money he got based on the market. I mean Brett Anderson just signed for $2.5 million guaranteed with another $1 million is incentives and he actually pitched decent the last two years.

All things considered it’s still a good low risk/high reward signing. Best case he regains I’m his old form and can be traded at the deadline for more assets.

As a Jays fan, Sanchez was frustrating and disappointing. He was supposed to be the best of that alleged “three headed monster” along with Nicolino and another guy I can’t remember. If he gets those blisters under control, he can be a top of the rotation starter. Remember, Nolan Ryan had blister issues too during his early days as a Met. Once he got them under control, he was a hall of famer. Not saying Sanchez will be Ryan but there is still hope for him if he can stay healthy.

Could’ve been Daniel Norris. Or Stroman. Or Syndergaard. Or Wojciechowski. Or DeSclafini.

Add these prospects up and if you consider all the hits and misses from the AA years one has to consider who will hit and who will miss out of the arms currently in the minors.

Wow. Bet on yourself Sanchez. Rebuild your career. That should have been Borass’s advice. You guys are acting like Boras did a great job. Yea Sanchez got a good bit of money, that he didn’t really need (made over 11 mil already). He just signed a deal in the worst division to pitch in. Imo Boras pushed him to the best place for Boras, not for Sanchez.

The worst division to pitch in? SF, LA and SD are great places to pitch, and Sanchez is a ground ball pitcher so he might handle Denver and AZ too.

This is the first article this off-season I can remember seeing Mike Leake’s name mentioned. Gotta think someone will bring him on for depth if not a 4 or 5 slot. Brewers come to mind not only for Leake, but Odorizzi as well, but I’ve not seen that MIL has interest in either.

I’m guessing some (most?) of Zaidi’s free agent moves are done with an eye towards helping the player have a break-out season, then flipping them for prospects at the deadline. Giants quickly earning a reputation for fixing pitchers: Gausman, Pomeranz, Smyly; and lesser examples like Ty Anderson and Trevor Cahill.

One of Zaidi’s acquisition models seems to be targeting players coming off a really down / outlier year; or recovering from a bad injury. Hence, expecting more pitcher acquisitions: Jake Odorizzi and Cole Hamels? Maybe a veteran like Rick Porcello, used in a new role?

I’m kidding obviously. I’m a Giants fan, and I say we won’t be serious World Series contenders for at least a year or two. I say at least because I don’t know how much Zaidi will start spending when Belt Cueto and Crawford are off the books.

There are not enough quality free agents coming up in the next two years for SF to build a WS contender out of. Sure they could sign a stud SS and maybe 1-2 more quality FAs after 2021 & 2022 but the real key to a SF resurgence lies in their farm system. They need to develop quality pitching from their farm system to even have a chance at competing in the next 3-4 years. I don’t see any aces coming out of SF anytime soon so while they may improve enough to be a playoff team, I don’t see a path to them truly competing for a title unless they are able to develop at least two star starting pitchers. That’s a tall task for any franchise.

I am on board with Zaidi’s plan. Farm is getting better, play on the field is getting better, spending is going down. Looking forward to our future with this team of execs.

I don’t quite understand the repeated criticism of the $4M. I think $4M means the Giants intend to use him in the rotation. So first of all, because of the lack of much of a market, almost every single SP out there has signed for something more than they’re worth. Almost every team was looking for pitching, and in a thin market, it drove prices up.

Secondly, how does anybody know if there were offers from other teams and what those offers were? Maybe he had multiple $4M offers. But it’s possible it took $4M to sign him.

And lastly, with all the financial resources available to the Giants, and all the money due to come off the books, Questioning an extra million or two, if that’s what it was, is nit-picking. That amount of $ means nothing to them.

What are you talking about? Outside of the big, but rather short-term contract of Bauer’s, salaries and years committed are DOWN, DOWN, DOWN this year.

But, why spend a lot when the best you can expect in the NL West for the next 3-5 years is 3rd place.

Have you been living under a rock? SP salaries are down? Some contracts say you’re wrong.

        Matt Moore – $3M
        James Paxton – $8.5M
        Robbie Ray – $8M
        Chris Archer $6.5M
        Drew Smyly – $11M

With the exception of Smyly, none of those guys is very good, and all including Smyly is an overpay. Smyly has upside, but is still a risk, and a sizable one, at $11M. None of the others are worth more than $5M a year, and it’s surprising that Matt Moore even was able to land a deal at all.

Starting pitching was at such a premium that the Giants and Mets even offered QOs to Gausman and Stroman. With a deeper SP FA class, probably neither one gets a QO.

Salaries may be down for position players due to financial losses in 2020. But when you factor in those losses with what SPs are signing for, it’s probable these guys could have gotten even more without those revenue losses. But it’s clear, teams are overpaying for starting pitching.

Zaidi will hit the halfway point with his contract this year. What have we learned ? No big or lengthy contracts – the age of the player not a priority – He will continuously sign & turnover DFA players and is a day trader – He loves incentive laden contracts – He has hired a shuttle bus between SJ & SF – He loves to hire patient hitters and pitchers that can display movement despite poor career numbers. He spends like each dollar is a man hole cover.

Hey 19…54, the shuttle runs SF to Sacramento. Not San Jose. And all the contracts so far are an attempt to keep them competitive until the many CURRENT contracts go away. Next year he’ll spend.

Seems to me you sound intelligent so I apologize if this offends you but intelligent people are sometimes inadvertently ignorant…no offense. Case in point, SF to SJ (A ball team in California league).

Claude Good one. Unless you have have been following the team for decades a news flash…….Over the decades the Giants PR department is famous for issuing news coverage with their own twists on stories hoping fans will pick up and run with it. Countless, endless examples such as ” Core Players “.
How about the latest which you recited so well ” current contracts go away “. Budget constraints ? ……pick up Forbes magazine…the Giants are one of the wealthiest billionaire franchises in all of sports. Phils, Padres, Dodgers, Yankees and others have no problem spending right now. Hope your aware the Giants have a PR Department.
No offense and as you pointed out didn’t mean to be ” ignorant ” and yes it should have been a Sac to SF shuttle.

Claude Great. Congrats on a great history following the team.
From 2000-16 the team had winning records 12 of 17 years. A losing record this year will be the 1st TIME in 135 YEARS the team has had a losing record 5 years in a row. Quite an accomplishment.
Again, don’t be buffaloed into thinking the Giants aren’t wealthy or capable. Did you ever get a look at the revenue they receive from television contracts ? Do you know what Charles Johnson is worth ?
Finally you and I both remember the 70’s. No money then but that’s not the case now. As you also know the team owns free and clear the ballpark and has little debt. The debt is now all in Mission Rock.

$4M is peanuts, this is a pretty low risk high reward signing. (I am not a Giants fan). I think Sanchez could be elite out of the pen, but he and Boras are quite stubborn. If the new ball can stop his blisters, huge win for Giants. If he still has blisters…they lost $4M which is nothing. To put this in prespective, Jays DFA’d Shun at $3.5M, traded for Matz at $5M, signed Robbie Ray at $8.M and are paying Roark $12M.
