Giants To Select Sam Long

By Connor Byrne | June 7, 2021 at 8:59pm CDT

The Giants will select the contract of left-hander Sam Long, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. He’ll start their game against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Long was an 18th-round pick of the Rays in 2016 who signed a minor league contract with the Giants entering the current season. He has since recorded a fantastic 1.99 ERA with 37 strikeouts against five walks in 22 2/3 innings divided between Double-A and Triple-A. Overall, Long has pitched to a 2.83 ERA through 178 1/3 minor league frames.

Once he arrives, Long will join a contending San Francisco club that’s currently without Aaron Sanchez and Logan Webb, who have combined for 15 effective starts but are on the injured list at the moment. Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood have been good in their own right, and their efforts have helped the Giants to a two-game lead in the National League West.

I wonder if he’s related to Shed Long, or perhaps Sam Horn.

Right! I hope that experience doesn’t make him a Koward.

18th round pick. Talk about a long shot to make it to the majors.

Not really, unless it’s in the sense that every draftee is a long shot. Plenty of #1 overall picks have either failed, or had unspectacular careers. But, because it’s hard to project young players, there are a lot of guys drafted in the later rounds that have had nice careers..

Just in the last few years, the Reds Jonathan India went in the 26th round. The D’backs Andrew Young was also drafted in the 26th round. The Rays drafted Nate Lowe in the 14th round. The Dodgers have been exceptionally good finding talent in the later rounds. Tony Gonsolin was a 9th rounder, Matt Beaty a 12th rounder, and Zach McKinstry went in the 33rd round.

I only looked at the 2015 to 2017 drafts and only got through the first 11 teams in the alphabet before I got tired of looking.

But a true long shot to make it to the majors, let alone the HoF, was Mike Piazza, who was taken in the 62nd round.

Jonathan India was drafted in the 1st round by the Reds. Brewers drafted him in the 26th round.

Long was indeed a long shot to make it to the big leagues and faced even longer odds after being released by the Rays. He thought long and hard about quitting but decided to give it another shot and trained long days and nights. Hopefully Long will have a long and productive career.

Maybe he’s coming up to be pitch in long relief?

He’ll get the spot start, but also on a pitch count. Beede has been back in AAA, but has been getting lit up, so glad Long was finally given a shot.

Filling in Kazmir’s role. Whenever Webb/Sanchez come off the IL he’ll likely be demoted unless he outperforms expectations.

Demoted or moved to the bullpen. Judging from earlier comments there are people that think he will end up in the bullpen, but also I think that would work for us
