Jose Berrios Reportedly “Primary Target” For Padres

By Anthony Franco | July 30, 2021 at 1:33am CDT

With the Padres having narrowly missed out in their efforts to land Max Scherzer, San Diego is turning their attention to the next-best starting pitcher believed to be on the trade market. Twins righty José Berríos is a “primary target” for the Friars in the coming hours, writes AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

It’s not especially surprising to hear the Padres’ front office is pivoting back to Berríos. San Diego was reportedly focused on Berríos throughout much of the week. That looked to be off the table when the Padres were seemingly on the verge of landing Scherzer. With the latter now likely headed to the division-rival Dodgers, a push for Berríos is apparently back on the docket.

Berríos isn’t the Padres’ only target, though, as Cassavell adds that San Diego could make multiple additions to the starting staff (with or without Berríos included). San Diego did already bolster the bullpen by acquiring Daniel Hudson in a late night deal with the Nationals. It seems the rotation is now the priority, with Cassavell noting that Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove are the only locks to pitch in a playoff rotation — should the Padres advance to an NLDS. Berríos, who has a 3.48 ERA/3.74 SIERA over 121 2/3 innings this season, would be an impactful enough arm to join Darvish and Musgrove in that group.

Of course, there’s no shortage of interest in Berríos. The right-hander’s controllable via arbitration through 2022 and making an affordable $6.1MM this season (about $2.1MM of which is still owed). Jon Heyman of MLB Network reiterates that the Blue Jays have “big interest” in Berríos and adds that the Rays and Red Sox are still in the mix. Dan Hayes of the Athletic suggests the Twins have interest in some of the Jays top position player prospects (Austin Martin, Orelvis Martinez and Jordan Groshans among them). The Mariners have also been linked to Berríos, as have the Mets. Recent indications are that New York isn’t likely to land him, though, with the Mets deterred by the Twins’ lofty asking price.

Well, another way of looking at this, is that Scherzer as a 8 week rental, at 37 years of age, with two injuries the past two weeks, might never have been AJP’s primary target. The Padres entry into the Scherzer market, made it a very expensive purchase for the Dodgers. Instead, Preller likely already had a Hudson deal lined up in his back pocket, and more than likely, Berrios as well.

I’d say that the Dodgers are getting Preller’s cast-offs, and paying dearly for them. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Padres picked up Frazer while Gallo was still available, so I’d say that the Pads made their decision. That’s Preller’s MO. IF and SS.

          Machado – SS
          Tatis – SS
          Cronenworth – SS
          Profar – SS
Frazer – 2B (not sure if he has the range to fill in at SS, but the Pads have other options).

You get my point? Preller believes any ballplayer who can play up the middle, can also be successful elsewhere. ***IF*** Preller could have off-loaded Hosmer in an affordable trade for Gallo, that might have been worth the effort. However, Gallo by himself wouldn’t have been worth the price the Rangers were asking, particularly if the Padres were sending half or more of Hosmer’s salary.

An affordable trade with Hosmer for Gallo? That would require a better package than the Yankees since Hosmer is terrible. Man… this is pure fantasy you live in.

Sherzer is heading towards reality that he is going to get bombed the remainder of the season.

mmyechoandbunnymen, You wrote, “Since Hosmer is terrible”. Hosmer was 2-for-3 last night and is batting .353/.423/.500 in July. That is the highest batting average and on-base percentage on the team in July, and only Machado’s .671 slugging percentage is higher. Hosmer had the worst June of his career, but we’re heading into August now…….AJ Preller is a smart GM. He wants to avoid Lux Tax penalties for his ‘small market’ team, but he’s not going to EAT too much salary or give-away players to do it.

If I’m the Nats I take the Padres’ reported deal for just Scherzer over what the Dodgers offered for both Scherzer and Turner. Think the Nats could have gotten way more if they’d traded them separately. Got to be pleased with the trade if you’re a Dodgers fan.

Sorry but trading prospects right after drafting them is not a “cast off”. If Preller wasn’t so interested in making deals just for the sake of doing so, Trea would be a Padre and not on the way to his biggest rival.

Unbelievable that some people still defend that trade for the Padres. Or call Turner injury prone when he has spent zero time on the IL due to chronic, recurring injuries.

Not defending the trade but most people back then in Preller’s shoes would have made that trade. The Padres franchise was adrift with no all-star caliber players on the MLB roster. Myers was the target, a former ROY who could become the cornerstone of the Padres. Turner had just been drafted that year and was not a top 10 pick. The first or second year Myers was with the Padres he almost went 30-30, which why the Padres signed him to a big contract. The only ding on Myers then was the injury bug, no one could have predicted the inconsistent production. Hindsight is always 20 – 20, but most informed baseball people make that trade 99 out of 100 times. How many teams passed on drafting Turner that year?

No, most people in Preller’s shoes wouldn’t have traded for any of Kemp, Myers or Justin Upton. They would have developed their own All Star caliber player. And they certainly wouldn’t have included him as a PTBNL in the trade and then awkwardly keep him in the org for 6 months even though every soul on this planet knew he had been traded.

        @ OldSaltUSNR;

There are some posters on here that twist things to make it seem as if their team’s FO is brilliant and/or to discredit another poster that has made an observation that they don’t agree with or that they’re threatened by..

But your stating that Preller wasn’t really interested in acquiring Max but rather had a plan to make the Dodgers pay dearly for him while Preller “…had a Hudson deal lined up in his back pocket, and more than likely, Berrios as well” goes far and above anything written on here this trading deadline. That alone gets you in the “Delusional Hall of Fame”.

But to then refer to Max and Trea as “Preller’s cast-offs” gets you your own wing in the Hall. To most rational people, a “cast-off” is someone a person once a relationship with and severed – Max and Preller have as much of a relationship with one another as you do with a glamorous Hollywood actress.

As for Preller trading Trea Turner because in some way that messed up the Dodgers – in that transaction Preller also traded Jake Bauers, Burch Smith, and René Rivera to the Tampa Bay Rays and Joe Ross to Washington so that he could acquire superstar Wil Myers and pay him accordingly. I don’t know what that had to do with the Dodgers.

Are you a wannabe science fiction writer? Submitting scripts to producers to create modern day Marx Brothers / 3 Stooges movies? Are you a poorly educated descendent of S. J. Perelman?

By all means, Stay as you are! Don’t let anyone change you!! Your work here is unique!!!

My dad and I both seemed to fear that farhan is too wrapped up in his own mystique to actually roll the dice and try to win in the year his team is actually good. Unfortunately for all us fans it appears the only thing the Giants planned on doing was watching their division rivals get much better. I saw almost universal applause at Farhan not selling the farm, but I sure don’t see how pissing away a first place team’s chance at a title is good sense ever..prospects fail just as often as they work out

You don’t piss away your future because your team is playing better than anyone imagined. The Giants are winning because they are getting production from players most thought were pretty much done. What happens when those players regress? Their replacements have been traded away for one shot at a title. Enjoy the teams success and be happy that they have a rebuilt farm that should produce quality players for the foreseeable future.

The Padres need offense more than SP. Yu & Musgrove are having very good seasons. You have to think Snell will at least pitch better or they lean on their rookie Weathers if they make the NLDS.

It’s the offense that’s inconsistence. The IF has batted well with Hosmer the weakest link, but the OF offense has been horrible. Pick up a bat that can play either LF/RF. Give Adam Frazier more at bats and sit Hosmer.

KB would be the ideal pick up. Give Jed a couple more 18 year old non-prospects like they did for Yu and it’d be a done deal.

You really don’t know much about the Padres, do you?

The Padres offense, particularly with the addition of Frazier, is just fine. NO offense fires on all cylinders all the time.

On the other hand, Weathers is just about maxed out on innings. This is only his SECOND full year of professional baseball, having pitched in low A in 2019, lost the COVID 2020 season, (except for one play off game), and he won’t pitch more than about 125 innings in 2021.

No one, including Padres coaches, has a clue as to what Snell will do. The bottom line is that he hasn’t turned the corner net, and we’re less than 60 day from the end of the regular season. The Padres didn’t spend $1.5 BILLION to build the current team, only to cast all hopes for the post season on a non-performing Snell. That’s a brutal assessment, but it’s the truth.

The Padres have two starters that have been somewhat reliable. In fact, Paddack who has been the most inconsistent of any player on the team, position play or pitcher, has the most quality starts since the end of June. That’s a serious starting pitching problem.

So, guaranteed, Preller will give up a lot to get the starter that he’s targeting. I don’t think that guy was ever Scherzer. (That was more a play to make LAD overpay, which they did.)

It’s looking like a WC finish for Padres. Berrios, Yu, and Musgrove can’t all start the WC game. I’d rather have another bat. Kris Bryant would be perfect. He can play every position; He can play 1B against lefties, CF/ LF/ RF. Yes Pham has batted better recently, but Padres have gotten NO production from Profar. Grisham is the only decent OF on the team and he’s struggled recently. I’d move Cronenworth to 1B, play Fraizer at 2B. Trade for KB to play RF/CF. KB than mix and match Grisham, Pham & Myers based on matchups in OF.

Yu & Musgrove are good enough to win a 7 game series if they get there, They just need the offense to make it to a 7 game series.

I would love to believe that Snell will emerge a viable frontline starter again, but it’s August and he’s been getting shelled every other time out for the entire season at this point. Seems unlikely.

Kind of similar to how I wish the Giants would stop being incomprehensibly good. Can’t envision a scenario where that stops overnight, either.

A Dodger homer might think so, but the record says otherwise. Give the Giant’s their due. They EARNED their current 1st place position in the NL West. They didn’t cheat, get lucky, or necessarily overachieve, either.

They may not have the same prospect level talent as LA, but you have to play to your potential. Coupled with Injuries the dodgers have gotten sub par play from a lot of the players they have for depth. I mean they are playing Pujols at first, that just tells you the difficult position they are in. So in a way SF like you stated is playing above their ceiling however that also means that LA isn’t playing up to their potential. So it’s I guess based on your perspectiv.

Gausman has been trash I’ve heard through announcers that his issues have been mechanical. He recently had an issue with his wife during pregnancy and has a new baby so it honestly could be stress lack of sleep who knows. But the hope is that with bullpens which have gone well they will be able to get him back on track relatively soon, granted he doesn’t have the track record of a Kershaw or Lincecum in his prime he’s proven he’s capable of missing bats at a really high level for almost a full season straight for the giants.

Good on the Giants. No one can minimize or take away from their accomplishments. Yeah, a lot of luck was involved, but they’ve executed, from the GM to coaches to players. Kudos. It’s their division to lose at this point.

That said, the Padres schedule for the first 4 months was absolutely brutal. The Padres schedule for the next month includes more off-days than any other team, a month against losing teams, and many match ups with the Giants in September. The Giants will also be playing a Scherzer and Turner enhanced Dodgers, I don’t recall the figure, but say a half dozen times as well. I think both the Dodgers and Padres, and considering the Giant’s tough schedule, are well positioned to challenge the Giants.

It ain’t over yet, and I can guarantee you, no one in the Giant’s organization thinks it’ll be a cake walk to the Division pennant, either.

      The Padres rotation stinks.

Darvish has been good for the most part a couple blips here and there. Musgrove has been decent for a while too, but was better earlier in the season. Snell is a complete mystery, no one knows what the hell he is going to do. Dinelson Lamet has been hurt most of the last 2 years (even longer??) and it sounds like even if he does come back in August he’s going to the bullpen. Last year’s big season acquisition Mike Clevinger is officially out for the year, Paddack has basically been a pitching machine with how much he has gotten hit, and Weathers is a rookie that’s coming up/already surpassed his innings limit.

So yes, I know only 1 of: Scherzer, Berrios, Darvish, Snell (if he ever turns it around), Musgrove can actually start the Wildcard game, but that’s a rotation that could be in big trouble. Plus, the Reds are coming on strong. They’ll have a bunch of August and September games against the Pirates, Cubs (likely will blow up their team) and still another series with Washington (who has blown up their team), while the Padres get 10 or so games against the Dodgers, a couple series against the Giants, the Astros in interleague, another 2 games in Oakland next week. So 5 games or 6 games whatever the Reds deficit is can turn pretty quickly if the rotation deteriorates.

Well this is a bad take, padres need pitching, like yesterday

Yeah, as a Giants fan I’m much more concerned with the other two teams adding front line starting pitching. Giants offense is streaky and lives by the long ball. With their rotation due for a little regression and apparently no reinforcements on their way, the Giants will need to rely more on their offense. Another high quality arm in SD would be worrisome

      Horrible take

Only one team in MLB has more games than the Padres where the starting pitcher failed to make it out of the fifth inning. That team has the second worst record in MLB.

every single comment you make is insulting.

that’s the definition of troll, “RemovePitcherWinsFromTheRecordBooks”. Hell, even your name is an insult to someone.

That’s a lousy way to live. I pity the person who sees the world through your glasses.

Not sure how this one was insulting. I told him he was wrong and explained why he was wrong. Way more constructive than your asinine comments.

Why stop there? Lose ERA too. Just make pitchers “accountable” for all runs allowed while on the mound.

Berrios is 55-43 in his career.

Having only turned 27 years old in May, you would think 150-160 wins is a possibly, if he can continue to stay healthy, of course.

    Groshans + Kirk perhaps?

The Dynamic Duo said the twins aren’t in a rebuild.. they lose 17 player to free agency in the next 3 year.. if they Trade Berrios.. they are admitting they are doing another rebuild… on top of the 2012 one.. which lasted for 7 years..

CJ Abrams, McKenzie Gore (and other prospects) for Berrios and Buxton.

Dodgers get Trea Turner and Max Sherzer. Padres get two elite talents in Berrios and Buxton.

Twins get two blue chip prospects.

This is the trade I’ve been thinking about the past week. But I’d toss lefty stud Taylor Rodgers in also. Three cost controlled studs for a big haul of unproven prospects with high upside. Abrams for sure. I still think Twins sign Buxton. His own camp has said they aren’t far off, he wants to be there, his own words publicly this week. So maybe Berrios, Rodgers, Maeda? Both sides should go big.

Biased Twins fan here. There is a negative percent chance that would happen. Buxton – though often injured – is one of the few players in the league who can be called amazing. MVP-upside type. I just can’t imagine they deal him.

Luke, The way you feel about Buxton is the way Padres fans feel about CJ Abrams. He’s hurt right now, but is the Padres most highly regarded prospect. Generally regarded as an eventual MLB sensation. He’s still a prospect, but a very special one.

Jjfleury, I could see AJ Preller trading either CJ or MacKenzie, but hard to imagine both. I know in the trade market, “you have to give to get….”. According to EVERY source, but Twins are setting the price on Jose Berrios very high. We’ll see. It would be great if a trade could be made to benefit both sides.

CJ Abrams will be a left-handed clone of Turner in 2 years, and will still have 6-7 years of control. So no thanks!

Funny how people write the Padres off being 2 games back of LA.
We could use a starting pitcher for sure. With that said, why overpay for 60 days of Sherzer. The guy is no guarantee post sticky stuff.
Turner is great when he is healthy 60% of the year.
Berrios is a better target than Sherzer. I would target 4 or 5 available guys over Sherzer

I suspect Dipoto won’t want to get into a bidding war for Berrios. He’d have to give up one of the young studs plus another player(s), which he’s already said he won’t do.

I’d like him for the RS, but much like with Scherzer, we won’t have the farm to compete with the Padres.

I suspect that’s the biggest issue holding back the Red Sox from making a really big splash. They’ve already reset their luxury tax, but they also want to increase their farm depth. I do think you guys did well on the Schwarber trade.

Padres should acquire at least 1 if not 2 of these rentals to bolster the rotation.

At point the Padres tried to send Hosmer back as part of a Gallo deal I wonder if there’s a fit to be made here of Hosmer, cash, one of the Padres 4 big prospects and another small piece or two for Berrios.
