Blue Jays Deny Mets’ Request To Interview Mark Shapiro

By Anthony Franco | October 27, 2021 at 7:44pm CDT

Blue Jays ownership recently denied the Mets’ request to interview Toronto president/CEO Mark Shapiro as part of New York’s ongoing front office search, report Ken Davidoff, Joel Sherman and Mike Puma of the New York Post. Shapiro becomes the third known Mets’ target of the day to be ruled out as a possibility, joining Brewers GM Matt Arnold and Cardinals GM Michael Girsch.

A Shapiro pursuit would’ve always been a longshot, not too dissimilar from New York’s earlier unsuccessful runs at A’s executive vice president Billy Beane and Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns. Shapiro has paired with general manager Ross Atkins to run baseball operations for the Jays since 2015, and he inked a five-year contract extension this January. The Post scribes suggest it’s unlikely Shapiro would’ve given much thought to making the jump to Queens even if Jays ownership had given him the opportunity to do so.

New York has also had reported interest in Giants GM Scott Harris and Dodgers assistant GM Brandon Gomes, but both took themselves out of consideration in favor of remaining with their current clubs. Los Angeles senior vice president of baseball ops Josh Byrnes is among the publicly-known candidates who haven’t since been ruled out; the Mets are also reportedly considering a couple of internal options, and there are surely potential targets with other organizations whose names have yet to be reported.

I agree, he and Atkins get a lot of undeserved flack it seems in Toronto, but they have built the team really well. It sucked to see SWR and Martin go, but if they can re-sign Berrios before he reaches free agency, I’ll take it. Still a few prospects left.

Starting to wonder if we’ll get pitched on “an apologetic Zack Scott will resume his role as acting GM after attending DWI School.”

Porter and Scott – besides their extracurricular activities – had similar resumes to some of these younger candidates. Porter is banned / suspended for another year, Scott is “on leave.”

I half-expect Cohen and Alderson to hold a press conference and either say “We’re not crooks” or to shake some dice in their hands and mumble something about strawberries.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a situation quite like this in professional baseball. It’s now at the point that anyone that takes the job will be a running joke.

Maybe one of their wives can explain the situation to them.

I was trying to keep things logical, realistic, and calm. Because it’s no where near as bad as the media portrays it. That’s one of the big reasons I love this website. The vast majority of these situations are either the executives current employer wouldn’t allow it or something like Beane (family reasons) or Theo (wanted a stake in the team). That last one may be who eventually becomes the top exec. Give him his 2% of the team (which is worth around 50 mil) and off they go. I’m totally guessing here, but Cohen may be waiting the market to set itself before committing a stake in his team. Again I’m guessing. But I’m starting to get worried. Although I think it’s the most unlikely of scenarios, people may just dislike Sandy Anderson or not want to work with him or people dislike Steve Cohen. That is possible and realistic. Cohen did some very bad things. Like legendarily bad. I work for a hedge fund and when I joined the company there are several days of training. One of the trainings is about Steve Cohen and what he did. It’s something that a lot of people hate. Anyway, I’m worried that they may have to go with someone who can’t handle the role or won’t succeed.

There’s being optimistic and then there’s being delusional. That’s the difference between the Mets FO and everyone else.

How many times has an MLB team allowed a high-ranking FO member to make a lateral move to another organization?

Not many, and none of them were President of Baseball Ops.

People like Beane, Shapiro, and Stearns shouldn’t be held against the Mets as it doesn’t hurt to ask about long shot candidates. And Arnold was denied permission to interview so that can’t be held against them either.

AGMs taking their names out of the running themselves is a bigger deal as it shows there is something preventing them from taking promotions. I have a feeling the presence of Sandy is scaring people away.

In addition, Cohen is likely to be a Moreno type owner, who steps in and makes dumb impulse moves coaxed by agents. We’ve already seen it with Lindor

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. It’s never a good look when the owner is on Twitter every day talking to fans. Does he not have anything better to do with his billionaire life? Perception is everything, and I have to believe that the Mets are laughably considered New York’s white trash team amongst the leagues upper management and owners’ opinions. I was really hoping that change of ownership would forever wipe that image out. I guess I can’t have everything.

The GM position has also changed significantly in recent years. It wasn’t that long ago that the President of Baseball Operations didn’t exist… but then teams needed to make a higher role than GM so they could steal other teams GMs that are only allowed to leave their current contracts if it’s for a promotion with another team.

The GM position is pretty much what used to be Assistant GM.. and it’s all run by sabermetrics for most teams these days, so why be what most fans see as the face of the front office in a market where the Mets will always be second to the Yankees, and fans are as bad as any fans in baseball.

Imagine only hiring GMs of POBO if they won a World Series. 22 teams wouldn’t ever have these positions filled.

Jimmer still hasn’t figured out only won team wins every year and more importantly more than one team is successful not just the team that wins.

          Has Anthopoulous won anything?

Aren’t you the same person that said Bichette has no chance to hit in the Majors?

Aren’t you the same person that said Vladdy is an unmitigated bust?

How many times has AA won the Executive of the year??? I know how many times Shapiro has won it…

          K man you are delusional.

If you are going to quote me get it correct. You are mistaken.

I said Vlad was going to be a star almost every single time I commented on Vlad even when the morons in these pages said the Jays should trade him after his first down year. I said be patient with Vlad, he is learning how to be a star.

For Bichette, I said he would be a below average shortstop and when his career was over he would be seen as a below average player because his swing was so explosive that his body wouldn’t be able to handle it over time and his wrists and core would give out. I started calling Bichette’s health issues when he was in AA. Regarding Bichette, we will see the injury bug hit him, just a few years, it will happen.

As far as AA goes, he is an elite evaluator and knows how to acquire players to try to win. Shapiro is terrible at both and is focused on “long-term” competitiveness because that gives him peace and job security, but he will never win , ever.

I don’t find it particularly newsworthy that guys aren’t interested in making lateral moves to join the Mets, or that teams aren’t interested in letting the Mets poach their front office talent. The Phillies had the same problem last offseason before settling on Dombrowski. The legitimate problem is the apparent lack of interest from guys like Gomes or Girsch who (in a vacuum) you would expect to want a chance at a higher ranking position (insofar as being involved with the Mets can ever be a “higher ranking position”).

I also don’t think Cohen being a knucklehead & a walking PR nightmare is necessarily a good explanation either. Owners over-promise and say stupid things all the time. The bigger issue to me is Cohen’s insistence on keeping Alderson in a poorly defined role that seems liable to interfere in baseball ops (especially if things go badly). Why would anyone want to be a POBO for the Mets when they have one on staff unofficially who the owner clearly has a lot of reverence for?

The problem with the Sandy narrative is he has one more year on his contract. If no one has been interviewed yet and they are compiling a list of those who are interested for interview purposes, I find it hard to believe they would keep Sandy around if during any interview, it became clear they could not hire their choice because Sandy was still on board. The reporting on this issue has been speculative and amateurish.

Dombrowski was the Phillies Ownership’s 1st choice.
He turned them down since he was working to bring an expansion team to Nashville.
Phillies circled back to Dombrowski after they had looked at other candidates.
Phillies Ownership talked Dombrowski into taking the gig.

So, that makes Dombrowski the both the Phillies 1st and last choice.

He’s worth $15B. The annual return from that, at 5%, is $750M. If he makes or loses $20M from the operation of the NYMs, he wouldn’t even notice.

For a lot of wealthy people, the destination is not the wealth, The destination is self-esteem. It’s why people like this spend big money on a Picasso, a new wing at the museum, or in this case, a BB team.

For example, if you had $15B, would you rather Tell people that you are now worth $15.01B, or would you rather show everyone your WS ring, or your WS trophy?

MLB and Astros Owner Jim Crane threw Luhnow under the bus as a fall guy/scape goat for the sign stealing.
Luhnow’s lawyer has identified many Astros emails that prove Luhnow was not involved with the sign stealing…
    Emails that are specifically labelled
“DO NOT SHARE WITH OR TELL JEFF LUHNOW”

Cohen needs to “grow a pair” , Go all “Al Davis” and hire Jeff Luhnow.

It would be Al Davis/Raiders/Rozelle all over again.

Imagine in a 2-3 years, pictures on the field of Cohen and Luhnow
raising the World Series trophy with a dejected looking Rob Manfred
“eating crow” on the other side of the TV announcer

Cohen doesn’t care that every Met fan is now wearing the scarlet letter “M” because we are all getting screwed in public. And like a fool I thought Cohen over he Tampons would be an improvement.

As a Cowboy and Met fan, I am truly cursed. They both should be perennial powerhouses since they have a resource advantage. With a cap in football and a luxury tax in baseball, they can’t outspend everyone on players. I don’t understand why they don’t use that financial advantage in every other aspect of the organization?

Jerry Jones can pay Moore and Quinn triple what they are offered to be head coaches. The Mets could pay a POB and GM millions more to work for them. I know money isn’t everything, but plenty of people follow the money. Why don’t the Mets just come out and say that’s what they will do to get the best employees into their organization?

Mike Hill is available. Fits right in with the Mets tradition. Loria can put in a good word to Cohen. Hill is a great Yes Man. He’d completely help Cohen with getting more Tweets out.
