Where Will Castellanos And Schwarber Land?

By Tim Dierkes | January 4, 2022 at 1:14pm CDT

As comparable bat-first players, Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber were the topic of a Free Agent Faceoff post by Darragh McDonald last week.  Back on November 8th, MLBTR projected a five-year, $115MM contract for Castellanos (who also requires draft pick compensation) and a four-year, $70MM deal for Schwarber.

We debated whether such a financial gap makes sense – is Castellanos really that much better right now?  Ultimately we projected the difference to represent our guess at the perception of the two players: Castellanos has always been a regular in his career and signed a four-year, $64MM free agent deal already, while Schwarber was non-tendered after the 2020 season and was often shielded against lefties as a member of the Cubs.  We could be wrong about this supposed difference in perception; the post-lockout market will provide the answer.  On November 29th, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com tweeted that Castellanos sought a seven or eight-year deal.

Since switching to the outfield full-time in 2018, Castellanos has spent the vast majority of his defensive innings in right field.  Schwarber settled in as a left fielder as of 2017, though the Red Sox used him as a first baseman in 10 regular season games plus another nine in the postseason.  In a perfect world, both players might spend most of their time at designated hitter, which seems likely to become a permanent part of the National League in 2022.  One key difference between the two is that Castellanos bats right-handed, and Schwarber bats left-handed.  Let’s take a look at potential suitors.

  • White Sox: Eloy Jimenez is entrenched in left field and Jose Abreu will play first base in ’22, but the Sox could consider an upgrade at right field or designated hitter, where Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and Gavin Sheets currently project to see time.  Signing Castellanos would result in the club forfeiting their second-highest draft pick in ’22 and having their international signing pool reduced by $500K, assuming rules from the previous CBA carry over for the remainder of the offseason.  I don’t see the White Sox making this level of financial commitment with decent options already in-house.
  • Guardians:  The Guardians’ DH spot is occupied by Franmil Reyes, but they don’t have much going on at the outfield corners and figure to make some sort of addition.  The franchise has never guaranteed a player more than the $60MM they gave Carlos Santana five years ago.  It’s possible the price tag for Castellanos or Schwarber falls into that range.  The Guardians have perhaps $36MM accounted for across eight players earning more than the league minimum.  Aside from Jose Ramirez at $12MM, they might not have another player set to earn more than $5MM in 2022.  If the team runs a $50MM Opening Day payroll again, then Castellanos and Schwarber won’t be part of it, but the team reached $135MM as recently as 2018.  The Guardians also face a smaller draft pick penalty, as they’d surrender only their third-highest pick for Castellanos.
  • Tigers: Castellanos was a first round draft pick of the Tigers in 2010 and remained with the organization until his 2019 trade to the Cubs.  On the way out, he called Comerica Park “a joke,” so he’s probably not looking to return.  Aside from that, Castellanos would actually look really good at an outfield corner or the DH spot for the Tigers, and their draft pick compensation would be reduced since they already signed Eduardo Rodriguez.  But the club hasn’t given indications it’s looking to upgrade at those spots, so both Castellanos and Schwarber are probably out.
  • Royals: The Royals have never given a free agent more than $72MM, and that was their own guy in Alex Gordon.  Otherwise, I think adding one of these players at right field or DH would improve the club.
  • Twins: The Twins could upgrade on projected left fielder Trevor Larnach, but given the state of their starting rotation this doesn’t seem likely.
  • Red Sox: Though they traded for Schwarber during the summer, I’m not sure a big commitment to either player is necessary or fits Chaim Bloom’s m.o.  They’ve got good first base options in Bobby Dalbec and Triston Casas.  J.D. Martinez has the DH spot at least for 2022.  Boston’s outfield is a bit unsettled with the swap of Hunter Renfroe for Jackie Bradley Jr., but they’ve still got Alex Verdugo, Kiké Hernández, and Jarren Duran in the mix.  Hernandez could play second base and Schwarber or Castellanos could work here, if Bloom is OK with the commitment.  Bloom did maintain interest in Schwarber in his public comments, even after Martinez opted in.
  • Yankees:  The Yankees have Aaron Judge and Joey Gallo at the outfield corners, Giancarlo Stanton at DH, and Luke Voit at first base.  Adding Castellanos or Schwarber doesn’t make much sense.  They still haven’t added a shortstop or starting pitching.
  • Rays: The Rays have never given a free agent more than $30MM in the Stuart Sternberg era.  They’re also flush with outfielders, even if they’re not at the proven offensive levels of Castellanos and Schwarber.  Perhaps if the bottom drops out for Schwarber’s market, the Rays trade away an outfielder or two, and they decide they’d like a big bat, this could make sense.  But it’s highly unlikely.
  • Blue Jays: Between right field and DH, the Jays could accommodate Castellanos or Schwarber.  A third baseman would seem a more obvious fit, but the Jays could pivot to one of these bats if needed or even add at both spots.
  • Astros: There’s simply not a spot for either player, with Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez, and Yuli Gurriel already in tow.
  • Angels:  Adding Castellanos or Schwarber would involve pushing aside Brandon Marsh or Jo Adell, who have had limited success in the Majors thus far.  It’s not out of the question, but the Angels have more pressing needs at shortstop and in the rotation.  The Angels would have to give up their third-highest pick to sign Castellanos, having already forfeited their second rounder to sign Noah Syndergaard.
  • Mariners: It’d be odd to see the Mariners sign Castellanos or Schwarber instead of extending Mitch Haniger, who has one more year of team control.  Uber-prospects Jarred Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez are long-term outfield answers, and Kyle Lewis is also in the mix.  You could shoehorn in one of the free agent bats in Seattle, but it’s not an ideal fit.  The Mariners would surrender only their fourth-highest pick for signing Castellanos, having already signed Robbie Ray.
  • Rangers:  The Rangers have already lost their second and third-highest draft picks in 2022 for signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien.  They’d give up their fourth-rounder to sign Castellanos.  You could view that as a lessened draft pick penalty, or you might say that the team won’t be inclined to further decimate their draft.  Kole Calhoun is slated to spend time in right field for the Rangers, but both outfield corners and DH are possible areas of upgrade.  Unless the Rangers have mostly reached their spending or draft pick forfeiture limit, Castellanos and Schwarber make sense here.

If the National League gets the DH, Castellanos and Schwarber could fit position-wise into any of these teams, since none of them actually have an incumbent DH.

  • Cubs: The Cubs’ decision to non-tender Schwarber looked foolish in 2021, but I don’t expect them to respond by signing him to a large free agent contract.  Castellanos was a popular, productive player in his brief time with the Cubs, and he could supplant Jason Heyward in right field.  But even if Castellanos’ demands dropped into the Cubs’ comfort zone (probably three years), the club would likely be reluctant to surrender their second-round draft pick.  If somehow Castellanos is not liking the offers (and perhaps the season starts late), perhaps he could pull a Keuchel/Kimbrel and sign after the draft.  In that case I could see the Cubs becoming interested, but it’s a long shot.
  • Reds: With the club in cost-cutting mode, they’re not expected to re-sign Castellanos or any other big free agent.
  • Brewers: The Brewers are set on the outfield corners with Christian Yelich and Hunter Renfroe.  DH is open, and there could be first base at-bats as well, but I think payroll restrictions would be the issue here unless one of the players drops his demands and/or they clear salary.
  • Cardinals: With Tyler O’Neill, Dylan Carlson, and Paul Goldschmidt, the clearest path to playing time would be at DH.  The Cardinals are not out of the question, but it’d be a surprise.
  • Braves: The Braves have Marcell Ozuna and Adam Duvall slated for the outfield corners.  It’s unclear what they plan to do with Ozuna following last year’s domestic violence incident.  I could see the Braves looking into Castellanos or Schwarber at three years or fewer, but probably only in a scenario where Freddie Freeman signs elsewhere.
  • Marlins: As a native of Hialeah, Florida, Castellanos has often been linked to the Marlins.  They already signed Avisail Garcia to play right field, but were said to still be in the market for outfielders.  On December 2nd, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald wrote that the club viewed Castellanos as too expensive, but Schwarber “particularly appeals to them.”  Jackson and Mish reported that Schwarber’s asking price was in the three-year, $60MM range.
  • Mets: The Mets could potentially squeeze in one of these players at DH, though the rotation would seem to be a greater priority.  Castellanos is likely out, as signing him would require the Mets to forfeit the #14 pick in the draft.
  • Phillies: The Phillies could add a bat at left field or DH, though neither Castellanos or Schwarber would help with their center field void.  There’s a Dave Dombrowski-Castellanos connection from their time in Detroit together, and they’re known to have had contact prior to the lockout.  The club reportedly pursued Schwarber as well.
  • Nationals: The Nats could use Schwarber back in left field or at DH, but signing either player long-term wouldn’t fit as part of a reboot.  Still, asked if he wants Schwarber back, GM Mike Rizzo replied, “Why wouldn’t we?” back in November.  Starting pitching would seem to be a greater priority.
  • Rockies: The Rockies have yet to address their outfield this offseason, and I think they’re a viable suitor for both players.  Either one could be plugged in easily at an outfield corner or DH.
  • Dodgers: Castellanos or Schwarber would likely have to split time between left field and DH if they were to sign with the Dodgers.  It doesn’t seem like their type of signing, and the rotation is more pressing.
  • Padres: Left field and DH both work here, and the Padres are known to be looking for a bat.  The Padres are a viable suitor for either player, though they may need to clear payroll space.  The club reportedly showed strong interest in Castellanos prior to the lockout.
  • Giants: The Giants have Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte Wade Jr. penciled in at the outfield corners, and I think Castellanos or Schwarber would be an easy roster fit.  The Giants can afford to sign any player they want, so it’s really just a matter of whether they like the value of these players, wherever their contracts land.  The Giants are not thought to be interested in $100MM contracts, though Castellanos won’t necessarily land there.

We’ll let the MLBTR readership weigh in. Where will each player end up?

The Astros could certainly accommodate Castellanos. Click has even spoke about the possibility of signing a corner outfielder and moving Kyle Tucker to Center. Schwarber is more challenged defensively, so that would be very unlikely.

That could be a Scenario we’re they rotate Brantley, Alvarez and Castellanos between DH, LF and RF. So that could be a fit right there!

I would have to believe that no one wants to see Castellanos play RF in Houston on a daily basis (except maybe the opposing team)

Ummmm… have you ever seen Castellanos in the field? I’m guessing no. Schwarber’s better than he is.

I get that you’d love to have his bat there, not sure any team would be worse off with the bat in the line-up, but in the field? UGH!

Expecting to get any form of defensive, well, ANYTHING, is asking too much from the guy.

Honestly, I have not seen him play in the field. I just know that he came up as an infielder so I assumed that he was mobile. From what I’m hearing however, it’s not good

Schwarber is better than Nick in the field. He also has a gun for an arm. He has graded average as a left fielder. Former catcher.

Nick is a better overall hitter and is a doubles machine. He’s much more consistent with the bat.

I’d like to see him back in Boston, but it won’t for several reasons and his about to get over paid for to many seasons being just one. Others are Casas should be ready by the end of 2022 if the season plays out and a good portion isn’t wiped away by a strike/lockout and the team and league enamored by Dalbec still, which has always fascinated me. never have been high on him, as was on the guy exactly like him Boston brought up few years back, Wil Middlebrooks. Both are/were hackers without plate discipline and I expect the league to shut down Dalbec in the coming season. Would love to see him moved asap for pitching if there is some GM gullible enough out there after he put up some numbers 2nd half of last season and all those warts resurface.

IMHO, WMB failed because he didn’t that much. Dalbec has holes, but tweaks them quite frequently.

The Cubs need a LH power bat, someone who can play 1B if Frank tanks and a LF. Schwarber makes a lot of sense.

Catellanos/Story make a lot of sense for the Cubs as does Correa/Rizzo.

I’ve seen the Schwarber song and dance play out in Wrigley and have no interest in seeing it replayed regardless of his 2021 season.

I’m sure on the depth chart the Cubs have Happ in LF, Ortega CF and Heyward in RF until Davis get promoted in which they will have to figure out an Ortega/Heyward RF.

I disagree with Tim’s take on the Cubs looking “foolish” for non tendering Schwarber. Yes, it turned out to be a mistake, but it’s not like he was killing it the year before. And he truly did seem to be a guy who needed a change of scenery.

Castellano was good with the Tigers so I wouldn’t mind if the Jays sign him. However, I would prefer the Jays to sign Bryant to play mainly 3B and another versatile impact bat. Baez would have been ideal, but is now gone! So maybe trading for one Like Ramirez, Ketel Marte or even McNeil, would make sense. Of course, The RF/DH can be swap between Teoscar and Castellanos and it’ll give the Jays a deadly line up to deal with. Example!

    1.Springer CF
    2.Bryant 3B
    3.Vladimir Jr. 1B
    4.Bichette SS
    5.Castellanos RF-DH
    6.Teoscar DH-RF
    7.Lourdes Jr. LF
    8.Moreno-Jansen C
    9.McNeil-Biggio 2B

Very very good line up to help out the pitching win games!

There are a few scenarios that can play out for the Jays to get more LH bats in the lineup.

Schwarber is one of them, but that’s probably plan C.

Bringing him in probably leads to you trading Gurriel JR as Grichuk is fine as a 4th OF, the Jays are a team that can eat his contract without a problem, plus would require them including assets to facilitate a trade, either a prospect or paying his salary anyway. Biggio slots in LF, Espinal plays 2b Groshans 3B (after the few weeks of service time manipulation if that’s still a thing) Schwarber probably DHs 80% LF 15% 1B 5% on vlads DH off days

But if you’re trading Gurriel it better be as a package for Marte or Jram. Which also increases the LH bats in the lineup.

Why is that plan C? Well Schwarber is a liability in LF (but hey, we watched Gurriel look silly in LF and still win a gold glove and I cringe anytime a ball is hit hard out into RF with Teo out there lol) and trading Gurriel will only be part of it, Cleveland probably isn’t trading Jram for anything less than Monero, Arizona probably wants Groshans included with Gurriel.

Plan A is probably (hopefully) signing Bryant for 3B leaving Biggio at 2nd (LHH walk machine) where he showed promise and then using the OF Catching and prospect depth to make a significant trade for a true #1 ace (which is the only way I’d include Monero)

If Cleveland would take Gurriel, Groshans, Pearson and Kirk for Jram. I’d do that in a heartbeat tho.

Groshans looks ready. Gurriel improves the OF immensely. Pearson still has something to unlock and Cleveland works wonders with pitching. Kirk is also an upgrade on the C situation, was the preferred catcher of the reigning Cy young winner and still hasn’t hit his prime behind the plate or with the bat but is providing actual value when he plays

Cleveland probably gives the Sox a run in the Central with that trade.

I was thinking something similar, @Bond.

Our lineup looked so much better after the deadline. But – to be fair – in terms of bottom line production (runs scored) it actually was *not* an issue. Certainly – along with a few other things – became one last year.

But previously, I had the same attitude as @Dusty. Meaning: who cares what side of the plate a batter digs in on, as long as he is a good hitter.

For us, it was one of those things which wasn’t really a problem until it was, uh?

Castellanos would be such a star in Miami, but he has a steep price tag. I know the Fish already had talks with Schwarber, but there seems to be a lot of teams in on him. I just feel like Miami is going to pull the trigger for one of them.

Not a bad idea Vonpurplehayes. Never count out dombrowski when it comes to handing out massive contracts *if* he has the consent of ownership, he’s done it at both Detroit and Boston, plus emptying his farm for vets also in an attempt to win.

If he thinks he’s close and Philly has a chance next year? Don’t doubt he won’t do anything possible if middleton will give his consent and pay the consequences down the road.

I’d be fine with trading one of Marsh or Adell for a solid rotation piece then signing a notable bat to take their place.

I’d prefer better defenders than either of these two, but say put Joc Pederson in right and platoon him with Taylor Ward. Take a look at their career splits and it makes sense.

And against righties that would likely mean a heart of the order that goes Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, Pederson with fellow lefty power bat Walsh in the mix.

A couple highly-rated prospects bomb, and all the team’s fans think they still have the capital they once possessed.

      They do not.

Marsh and Adell TOGETHER now might combine for an inning-eating, back-of-the-rotation starter past his prime.

I still think Schwarber makes a lot of sense for Toronto. Espinal at least earned himself a shot at the everyday third base job so I don’t know if resources need to go there quite yet. If Grichuk could be dumped or one of Gurriel or Hernandez are flipped for pitching, Schwarber would be a very nice left handed replacement.

I guess it would all depend on if they were able to use Lourdes or Teo to improve their rotation or 3B immediately.

It is hard to imagine a team that a) has a surplus at those positions and is willing to trade and b) willing to take back players with only 2 years of control left

Im not overly concerned with getting more LHH. I’d be concerned if we had a team full of LHH.

Schwarber doesn’t move the Needle enough for the Jays in my opinion.

Im not going to be mad if we obtained his Services. I just think he becomes the Majority DH if we do.

Espinal most definitely deserves some playing time. But he’s a bottom of the order glove that can fill in at 3B 2nd and SS if needed on most teans. So I wouldn’t pencil him into a world series roster as the starting 3B just yet.

I could be wrong, he could turn into an Altuve type bat all of a sudden. Stranger things have happened.

Trading for Chapman or signing Bryant is probably the most likely outcome if you’re thinking WS push

So… who plays where? Espinal is good as a def-only guy, so how does Schwarber fit in? As a DH? a 1B? A (laughs maniacally,) 3B? on OF in a crowded OF? Dreaming on a big batr is all well and good as long as it makes sense in a TACTICAL way, not a fan-service way.

Interesting as neither player has a a plethora of potential landing spots. Might mean these two might have to accept less than they planned to. I do not see Nick Castellanos getting a 7-8 year deal. Heck, even if the NL gets the DH might be hard to see him get 5 years.

I picked the Padres for Castellanos, though Petco park suppresses runs more than CoPa overall though is marginally a better HR park. Even though park factors are supposed to independent of the team playing there, CoPa played fairly neutral when the Tigers had a good offense during their recent heyday almost a decade ago. Now it tends to be more of a pitchers park even though it has not undergone any structural changes since moving the LF fence in 2003.

      Cano/McNeil/Davis/Smith/Alonso.

Too many DH’s already. Alonso is not going anywhere, but if they keep Smith, then Alonso could get DH reps with Smith, the much better fielder, at first. Cano is not going anywhere, so he’s either getting reps at 2B or DH until he proves he’s cooked. McNeill has a growing rep as a bit of a prima-donna. I suspect they will try to trade him to bring in some pitching. Showalter won’t put up with nonsense.

The Mets have multiple potential DHs. They do not have reliable starting pitching outside of their excellent 1-2 who can also be considered injury risks. My point? I think the Mets will be focusing on pitching.

The two wilds cards are will there be a DH in the NL and when a new CBA is signed as time to sign will be vital. They could end up with 1 year contracts and hope for better next year.

You have to figure only a contender will spend the money so teams like the Cubs are out.

Schwarber looks like a perfect fit for the Yankees, especially at 1B. They could move Voit easily. Maybe they use him in the OF but their OF defense is already suspect. Without an NL DH I don’t see a big market for him.

Castellanos would be a good fit for a few teams. The Phillies seem like the common sense one. Texas, San Francisco, and Tigers would also be good fits.

I don’t see the Red Sox going for either because of the prospects coming at 1B and OF. I can see them starting to rearrange their payroll to make room to keep their young core.

With a Yankees pitching staff designed to pitch to the ground ball, how can you even think that “no glove” Schwarber would be a good fit at first base……..can he outhit the runs he would give up at first with balls in the dirt? Doubt it and on a multiple year contract, he would be poison at first base for the Yanks.

I think Schwarbar makes a lot of sense for the Yankees at lst base, especially if Anthony Rizzo is not resigned. Schwarbar can split lst base duties with DJ. I feel Matt Olson is way too expensive, and Freddie Freeman probably resigns with the Braves for 5 years at $25-27 million annually with a club option for a 6th season.

Don’t disagree with respect to Freeman and or Olson on your comment but Schwarbs at 1st base would doom them to failure on a pitching staff that pitches to ground ball contact.

@rocky7- I hear you. I was thinking Schwarbar could play 5 or 6 innings at lst then DJ could take over at lst base afterwards, and Schwarbar could then be moved to dh. His lefthanded power would definitely be something playing at Yankee Stadium with the short rightfield porch.

Matt Olson would be well worth the trade chips it would cost to acquire him, although Cashman would probably overpay. Schwarber would probably be better than Voit at staying healthy, but they’d be swapping one very bad fielder for another. In other words, Schwarber at first base really doesn’t make sense for the Yankees. He doesn’t make sense as an outfielder either, because he’s an all-around bad fielder.

@Mr. Person- If Oakland is expecting Austin Wells, Gleyber Torres, and Oswald Peraza, that’s not happening. Thinking Voit, Peraza or Torres, and either Schmidt or Deivi. Not much more than that for Matt Olson. Kyle Schwarbar likely wouldn’t be playing against lefties and he wouldn’t be playing lst base in the later innings anyway. He would be moved to dh in the later innings.

Tim, Wade is a platoon so I wouldn’t say he’s penciled in. Won’t play vs lefties. Currently Slater and Ruf vs lefties. So no to Scwarber. Castellanos wants too many years, so no to him. I like the Giants to go after Suzuki. Or everyday righty centerfielder. Not much quantity their tho. Just my 2 cents.

Would not mind the Rangers picking up either, but Schwarber makes slightly more sense as there is no draft pick attached to him. I actually like Castellanos better, but to sign him Rangers would lose another draft choice, so unless they feel they can get an equivalent value of a fourth round pick in a trade of some combination of Solak, W.Calhoun, Allard, and Arihara, I don’t think they would surrender another draft choice.

The draft will take place regardless. So the team that loses the player will get a draft pick this year. If a team signs a QO player after the June draft, then that team forfeits its pick in the next draft, I’d assume. I doubt the lockout will last that long though.

      Reply
      • Armaments216

The losing team only gets a compensatory pick if the QO player signs a contract with another team, and contracts in excess of $50M result in an earlier round draft pick. Not sure how the team gets an extra pick in the draft, or how that pick is determined, if there’s still a lockout.

Maybe any compensatory draft pick gets deferred to the next year’s draft for the remaining QO players who are still unsigned during the lockout?

Although Castellanos has been a very solid player for a long time and was chronically underrated, I think he got quite the swelled head moving from Comerica to Cincinnati..

I wish him the best, but like Correa, he might find his market a bit limited beyond his asking price and may need to settle, NL DH or not. And that will probably f%$#k with his (and generally their,) flow.

Owners just aren’t paying for bat-only players these days unless they’re super-human.

Schwarber’s never pretended to more than he is, and while he might be slightly less impressive stat-wise, he’s probably a better clubhouse presence.

If I were a player in the clubhouse of a contending team, I’d rather have Schwarber.

If I were an owner in a smaller market, I’d rather have Castellanos.

I did not vote in the poll. There are too many variables at play to make a solid decision, and with all the f#$%king gambling marketing going on right now, I’d rather not participate in that kind of thing.

If fielding metrics mean anything, Dalbec, Schwarber and Voit are terrible defenders at first base. Both the Red Sox and the Yankees could use a better first baseman than any of those three.

when a guy launches 22 bombs in 60 games, while clearly injured, you SHOULD take him seriously. I’m honestly blown away by how badly they’ve treated Voit over the last year or so.

Yeah, he’s not a good 1B, but very few who play the position are. It’s reserved for guys exactly like him, for the most part.

I’ve been in touch everywhere I can, trying to figure out what soured the bombers on him, but haven’t gotten more than a glancing response.

Would love to hear more honest impressions if they’re available.

I was looking at the percentages for each team and realized….Apparently every team has at least 1 vote. I think Castellanos is the better hitter, but if he’s insistent on 7 years, then no way, Jose! As for MLBTR’s predictions, I’d take Schwarber if those were correct. And I think Castellanos will go to Toronto, and can even play 3B there in a pinch. Idk the defensive metrics, but as a Tigers fan that watched Nick daily, I’ve always thought that he was better at 3B than RF. Schwarber will go to either San Diego (my vote) or possibly Philadelphia.

Avila has worked since Dombrowski left to put together a team built for Comerica. Speed and Defence! Miggy gets the majority of the DH at bats. There is no room for Castellanos in the Detroit OF. Baddoo, Greene, Grossman, Reyes, Cameron or Haase are plenty for the OF and both Castro’s play OF too. Solid to Superior defence will help the confidence of the young pitching. I love Castellanos bat, but unless Miggy retires, there is no room in Motown.

Very few players want to be a full time DH. Most AL teams use the position to rotate players for matchups or rest. Cruz is the only full-timer in 2021. Martinez is as bad as these two but even he plays some rf.
