List Of All-Star Roster Replacements

By Mark Polishuk | July 17, 2022 at 7:27pm CDT

7:25PM: Freddie Freeman is also joining the NL roster, as the league announced that the Dodgers first baseman is replacing Starling Marte.

4:04PM: The league announced that the Cardinals’ Miles Mikolas has now been added to the NL roster, taking the spot of Brewers righty Corbin Burnes.

July 17, 1:15PM: The Mariners have announced that Ty France will be joining the festivities as well. MLB later announced the addition as well, noting that he is replacing Mike Trout. With Trout not taking part, Byron Buxton will move into the starting center fielder role for the American League.

10:05AM: MLB has announced three more additions, with one of them being the previously reported addition of Williams. The other two are closers: Liam Hendriks of the White Sox and Jordan Romano of the Blue Jays. Those three will replace Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Max Fried.

July 16, 11:01PM: Brewers reliever Devin Williams has also been named to the NL roster, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link).

7:11:PM: Four replacements were announced to the All-Star rosters, taking the spots of four other players who won’t be part of the Midsummer Classic.  Dodgers left-hander Tyler Anderson, Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth, and Braves third baseman Austin Riley will be joining the National League’s team, while Blue Jays second baseman Santiago Espinal has been named to the American League’s roster.

Espinal is replacing Jose Altuve, who was hit in the knee by a pitch on Thursday.  Altuve sat out Friday’s action and is back in the Astros lineup tonight as the DH, but even though he is well enough to play, Altuve and the Astros will use the All-Star break to get the second baseman fully back to 100 percent.  Altuve had been voted in as the AL’s starter at second baseman, but now the Guardians’ Andres Gimenez take over as the starter for Tuesday’s game.

Jazz Chisholm was voted as the NL’s starting second baseman, but the Marlins standout will also be missing the game due to his lower back injury.  Chisholm has been on the 10-day injured list since June 28, but he has been working out at the Marlins’ spring camp, and taking part in baseball activities.  There isn’t a set timeline for Chisholm’s return, but the team is hopeful Chisholm can be activated for the start of the second half.  With Chisholm out, Jeff McNeil becomes the NL’s new starter at the keystone, while Cronenworth will take over the backup infield role.

Giants lefty Carlos Rodon is also battling injury, opening the door for Anderson to receive the first All-Star nod of his seven-year career.  Rodon has both a blister and a split nail on the middle finger of his throwing hand, and told  Henry Schulman and other reporters that he is skipping the ASG in order to give the injury time to properly heal.  There isn’t yet any indication that Rodon might require a visit to the injured list, and since Rodon last pitched on Thursday, he’ll receive at least a full week off between starts.

Riley was perhaps the most prominent omission from the original All-Star roster, given how the Braves slugger has posted some huge numbers over the first half.  However, as it often the case with “snubs,” the situation sorted itself out once other players started to drop out.  Riley will be taking the place of Nolan Arenado, as the Cardinals third baseman will use the break to rest a lingering back problem.

@metsfanina22: Are you serious? d’Arnaud played for the Dodgers for exactly 1 game. Do you really think he credits a team he played 1 game for as the team who “turned his career around?” What a joke. If his time with the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves shows anything it’s that his career didn’t need turning around. It was just that the Mets were the only team that could figure out how to screw him up. He has been great for every other team. I can’t believe you just tried to pretend the Dodgers “turned him around” when he only played one game for them.

Yeah… I’m sure while d’Arnaud has been wining All-Star awards and Silver Slugger awards with Tampa and Atlanta he is sitting there thinking about everything he learned for Dodgers coaches during that 1 day he played for them. That doesn’t even make sense. If you had said Tampa I could see it. The Dodgers? He only played 1 game for them. That’s like saying Mike Piazza credits the Marlins for his career as a Met.

          You’re ridiculous bro.
Travis said it not me. He said the dodgers coaches turned his career around and heaped praises on the work they did with his swing.
Don’t take it up with me, go complain to DArnaud

Here you go straight from the catchers mask

“The Dodgers were the team I always envisioned myself playing for since I was 3 years old,” he said. “My time with them had a way bigger impact than people realize. It reminded me of who I am, where I’m from, and why I wanted to play baseball in the first place. Those five days, for me, felt so much longer and so much more powerful than just a small, short stint.”

@mets fan: When did “my time had a bigger impact than people think” become the equivalent of “DArnaud credits LA’s coaches for turning his career around?” d’Arnaud never said that. He never said that in the article. He never said that period. I am sure he loved his “5 days” as a Los Angeles Dodger but that is a far cry from “DArnaud credits LA’s coaches for turning his career around.” He never said that. Read the quotes in your own article you posted. If you want to believe Maria Bello’s opinions (which weren’t quotes at all) while she was working for the LA Times (A newspaper whose baseball writers are paid to make the Dodgers look good) that is up to you. You don’t have to lie though. Travis d’Arnaud has never said anything close to “crediting the LA coaches for his career turnaround.” What a joke. Show me one quote of d’Arnaud actually saying that. Not some LA Times employee implying it. Huge difference. That’s like pretending Michael Conforto is actually healthy just because Scott Boras said so 4 months ago. d’Arnaud never said anything other than his time in LA was more important than people realize. Far cry from “crediting the Dodgers coaches with his career turnaround.”

Crow? Kinda just sounds like he was excited to put on the uniform. Nowhere in there is any evidence that they “turned him around”. It “felt” so much more powerful. “Felt”, but wasn’t. It’s a throwaway quote, not proof of an outlandish claim.

And strangely enough, the Dodgers signed d’Arnaud with the idea that he could play the OF. He was worked out in the position, but never made a single OF appearance in a game, not then or since. His sole appearance in a Dodger uniform was one AB as a pinch-hitter. (I happened to be at the game.) A real career-changer that must have been!

Well, never mind. Mikolas got in after all.

By the way, don’t forget that this is Mikolas’s 2nd time as an All-Star, so he’s not just “having a really good three months.” He reinvented himself overseas, came back to be an All-Star in 2018 and had a pretty good 2019, but then injuries cost him most of 2020 and 2021. Now he’s finally healthy again and proving that he still has it.

Fair enough, Mikolas had one other good season. Urias is arguably just as good this season and has put together a much more impressive body of work over many seasons without ever being selected. Not a lot of logic behind who gets the nod.

Correction: Mikolas has had one other great season (2018) and a good season (2019) in addition to his great season this year.

In any case, only 2022 performance matters for All-Star picks for this season.

That a lamestream media narrative. Despite all the promotion and hype of basketball done by the 4-letter network, baseball ratings are still #2, and higher than basketball ratings on all fronts – regular season, post-season, etc.

Anytime anyone uses the word “lamestream,” I immediately deduct about 50 IQ points. Of course the ratings are high. Older people are the ones watching it. Most younger people don’t watch TV on devices that are associated with those ratings, so all TV ratings skew toward the older generation.

Therein lies the problem. When I was a kid (90s), my dad watched or listened to AT LEAST 125 White Sox games every year. Consequently, I watched or listened to AT LEAST 100 games every year. The vast majority of kids today have not had that kind of exposure to baseball and never will.

Ty France was named to the roster today. If he gets into the game, listen for Dodger Stadium organist Dieter Ruehle. When France played for the Padres, when he came up to bat he got “La Vie en Rose” as his walkup music. I don’t know if many fans got the joke, but the player seemed to think it was pretty funny.

It’s laughable. Drury or Edman can play 2B. Drury’s been one of the best hitters in the NL despite very little support around him. I’m not a Reds’ fan but that is ridiculous. Cronenworth has been terrible.

Drury hasn’t played 2B position since a few games back in May. The ALG awards players by position, not by stats. But if you compare WAR, Cron is at 2.8, Drury (who’s having a fine year) is at 1.7 WAR.

      That’s how.

Ketel Marte (WAR 1.9) makes a better case than Drury for 2B ASG

Okay, use your preferred stat OPS+. Cronenworth is second best among available 2B (guys who have played majority of games at 2B) trailing only Ketel Marte (who probably got snubbed more than anyone). But defense matters and Cron is great at 2B compared to Marte who isn’t.

I just don’t see the “surprise” that Cronenworth was selected. From the primary metrics, he’s as deserving as any other NL 2B.

Drury isn’t a 2Bman, he’s played the position about 20% of games this year, not at all the last 2 months, and in his career less than 5% of time.

Using OPS+, Edman’s is just 101, Cronenworth is at 114+

All the analytics don’t take away from a .241 average and 9 homers. The All-Star game is for the fans and just because those other guys don’t play much 2B, most would rather see a guy who has hit nearly 20 bombs with a .864 OPS play out of position for a few innings just to get him in there. It’s not like we’re asking for a catcher or outfielder to play second. If you asked Cronenworth himself, I bet he’d say those other guys are more deserving.

It’s an exhibition, not a strategically-sound nor meaningful game.. Enjoy it for what it is or don’t pay attention. It’s not must-watch for me. I enjoy the Futures ASG much more.

It’s bordering on embarrassing that he is in HR derby, let alone AS game. Don’t mean to rag on him as he is my favorite player. Just really frustrated with him right now. Just hope he figures it out and HR derbies don’t exactly help with that. His timing is horrible. Constantly swinging through balls that he should be smoking…

That’s not true. The position players who dropped out only did so for legitimate health-based reasons. Arenado in particular is upset about needing to drop out. As for most of the pitcher replacements, MLB is required to replace the ones who started the Sunday beforehand for good reasons.

The $1 million is a good idea, except you’d end up with utility players making it again. They all star game was bad when it meant something.

It’s an exhibition game for the fans. It’s not meant to be taken so seriously! That’s why nobody liked how it used to determine home field advantage in the World Series.

Those players don’t hear half the crap Altuve unfairly hears. I can only imagine how exhausting it is to listen to the same stuff over and over again, knowing full well your team wasn’t the only one doing it (and Altuve wasn’t a participant).

So Buxton needs every 3rd game off, but he’s gonna suit up and start a meaningless all star game? Bad look

Because his priority should be helping his team. If he needs rest, take rest don’t play in a meaningless game at a position he hardly plays for his actual team, he usually DHs

He doesn’t need that much rest. You said he only needs one out of every three days off, and the All-Star game fits right in that schedule

Face it folks this isn’t a ALLSTAR game it’s a most popular vote not a best player at each position it will always have 4 or 5 Yankees always have Mike Trout even if hitting .220. Will always have 3 or 4 Red Sox even if they don’t deserve it will always have 4 or 5 Dodgers in it

what the $s@!…whats the sense? if the best players aren’t there. so let’s take the worst players and put them in a game. it would probably be watched and more amusing. Or even better put Manfred in a dunk tank.

Your confusing “don’t want to play “with “can’t play.” I bet every single one of the dropouts wishes they could play.

With condensed schedule with make up games many teams are playing 25-29 straight games played. Some have a short All star break with double headers to be played with another 25-28 more games in a row. Most of you people have more then 2 or 3 days off in a month. Remember teams spend half of them on the road. Not as easy as you think, life on the road isn’t fun. Injuries will happen, fatigue for many players remember it’s hot as hell out their. They should have a one week break for all player’s.

Nico Hoerner should’ve been an all star. Hitting
.307 with .767 OPS and .423 SLG. (Not bad for a guy who is more of a slap hitter. Singles and doubles.

Because W/L record isn’t a very good stat, whereas Mikolas significantly leads Wianwright in the stats that really matter such as ERA, WHIP, Ks, K%, BB%, etc.

Besides, Mikolas also has a 7-7 record.

Looks like someone would actually post a correct list. The announcement about starting pitchers omitted Riley and Freeman. Listed only one 2B on the NL roster is that correct?

Cease not being an All-Star this year is beyond a snub. He is in possible contention to win a Cy Young, and leads the MLb in Ks and K/9.
