Padres, Cole Hamels In Agreement On Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | February 16, 2023 at 10:18pm CDT

10:18pm: Hamels’ deal would contain a $2MM base salary if he cracks the MLB roster, reports Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press.

3:20pm: The Padres and left-hander Cole Hamels are in agreement on a minor league deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. Presumably, Hamels will receive an invitation to major league Spring Training once the deal is finalized. The southpaw is represented by John Boggs & Associates.

Hamels, 39, is a wild card at this point in his career. He spent many years as one of the most reliable and consistent hurlers in the big leagues but has barely pitched at all over the past three seasons. From 2006 through 2019, he logged just shy of 2,700 innings with a 3.42 ERA in that time. He pitched at least 132 frames in all 14 of those campaigns and topped 180 in 11 of them. His ERA was never higher than 4.32 in any individual season and he kept that mark under 4.00 in all but three of those years. He also pitched in the postseason in eight of those campaigns, winning NLCS and World Series MVP honors in 2008 with the world champion Phillies.

But as mentioned, the story has been flipped in recent years. Hamels signed a one-year, $18MM deal with Atlanta for 2020 but was slowed by shoulder irritation as the start of the season neared. The pandemic ended up putting everything on pause, giving him time to recuperate. Once things ramped up again, however, he was dealing with triceps tendinitis. He came off the injured list in September and made one start, but went right back on the IL after that.

He didn’t sign with anyone in the subsequent offseason, eventually holding a showcase in July of 2021 to demonstrate his health to interested clubs. The Dodgers signed him at that point but he was ruled out for the season just a couple of weeks later with his shoulder pain returning. He didn’t pitch at all in 2022, recently telling the Associated Press that he underwent three surgeries in the past year, on his left shoulder, right knee and left foot. Nonetheless, he still had his sights set on a comeback and held a showcase for scouts last month. The Padres were connected to him and Michael Wacha in rumors a few days ago and have now added both pitchers to their staff.

It’s tough to know what to expect from Hamels at this point. That single start in 2020 is his only appearance over the past three years and he’s been under the knife quite a bit since then. But since this is just a minor league deal, there’s no real risk for the Padres. They can bring him into camp and see if Hamels is capable of getting back on track at all.

Up until recently, the club had a fairly lopsided rotation. Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Blake Snell provided them with a strong front three but there were question marks behind them. The frontrunners for the backend spots in the rotation were Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo, both of whom are not really established as starters. Martinez had better results out of the bullpen last year while Lugo hasn’t really been a starter since 2017. The signing of Wacha this week could help to firm up the back of the rotation since he put up a 3.32 ERA with the Red Sox last year.

Hamels will be trying to prove himself healthy and force his way into that mix. If either Lugo or Martinez struggle in their attempts to secure rotation jobs, the Padres will need other options on hand. And there are also the inevitable pitcher injuries to consider. They have other options on the roster, such as Adrián Morejón, Jay Groome, Brent Honeywell Jr., Reiss Knehr, Ryan Weathers and Pedro Avila, but if Hamels looks anything like his old self, he could leapfrog all of those guys. If he does so, he’ll be pitching for his hometown team, having been born and raised in the San Diego area.

Not worth watching him get ready to make the opening day roster, only to come out of his first start in the second or third inning and never pitch the rest of the year. But they say there is a fool born every minute.

I’d say his 14 year track record as a well above-average pitcher is a pretty easy sell. Even if his injuries and age make him only half the pitcher he once was, he can still help a team out.

You say that like its Hamels floor coming into this season. He could also be a tenth of what he once was. Half would be the ceiling IMO.

I am curious how much of that $18,000,000 was prorated in the abbreviated 2020 season where he pitched in one game, facing 14 batters.

@neo – He still gets paid for the “full” season, even if he only faced 14 batters. Given the season was ~37% of a regular season, he probably still made about $6.67mm.

Correct. He knew as long as he gets in 1 game, only 1, he can get paid for the whole season. Dude could have saved face and only accepted half but millionaires seem to have it just so tough. He made more than 6.67 million. What was it, 18 million? He fleeced the Braves. But he has his baseball card stats to worry about.

It’s a gamble worth taking. There’s no risk and given his best pitch is a change up there’s a chance it can work with reduced velocity, so who knows. We will probably get a Cole Hamels announces retirement post in the next year but maybe not.

He’s only 39 years old. I think it’s the cognitive dissonance of seeing himself still be able to pitch at an elite level….for someone who isn’t a major league pitcher or in the low minors…while in a training facility…at their leisure even if that leisure is still a relatively intensive training regimen with simulated games….

    vs

Actual major league hitters, an actual major league work load…

I would be shocked if it’s about the money at this point.

Also it’s been four years since he was a regular full time major league player.

I guess he can’t think of anything else he’d rather do with his time.

Best of luck to him, though!

??? Where is this coming from? Did your brain freeze when you tried to mount an insulting come back? “You still think you can fk but you do still do it anyway”…. Tell me you’re bitter about your own love life without telling me you’re bitter about your own love life… Anyway…I digress…

I didn’t intend anything ‘cute’ or ‘snarky’. It was a sincere reaction to a player who’s already made his money, who’s already been given an additional $19M in come back contracts, etc. only to not be able to stay healthy longer than a week or two, continuing to try and make a come back almost half a decade later from his previous heyday.

I sincerely am surprised or intrigued that someone who’s made as much and had as much success as Hamels hasn’t just moved on to other interests and passions as a second career, the way a lot of players do.

No, you were being a little snarky. It is not difficult to understand why someone who made it a mission to not only make it back to the majors, but to make it back to the majors in order to help a contending team would, you know, actually try and complete that mission. Future Hall of Famer Johan Santana tried the same exact thing. So did future Hall of Famer Dave Stieb. Baseball is filled with hundreds of nearly identical stories.

It’s a comment section. You and I are the comment section experiencing itself. It’s just how comment sections tend to go.

          Hot Takes.

Also– I know a lot of people who reached the pinnacle level of their industry, made a lot of money and then they were out- regime changes, taking a sabbatical, something and then they decided after a while to go back and they had to kind of start over- make significantly less money to do lower level work in order to climb back to their previous level of power, income, etc. and they decided it wasn’t worth it.

For all the baseball players who do what Hamels is doing and continue to try and mount comebacks, a lot of guys will retire despite getting offers of $2M or even $6M or something, because they’re coming off a $100M+ deal and they’d already made tens of millions before that, so the extra money has no real impact on their life at that point, but the idea of the workload of training, and traveling, etc. does.

So it is interesting to me when guys who played at the top of the game- the highest salaries on the biggest stage, still want to grind it out in the minors and on the road as a minor leaguer, when the compensation won’t be what it once was and the path from that starting point back to their previous level of relevancy on a big league roster is very unlikely.

I don’t think Hamels is crazy or irrational or stubborn, I am just surprised when guys are willing to go through the doldrums of the minors for a possible but unlikely return when they simply do not need the money and might be bothered by having to play like an amateur or at an amateur level after playing at the top level in their industry- or game, as it were, for so long- when they could simply retire or switch industries, where the mentality of starting from scratch is less frustrating or more exciting because it’d be a new venture, a new passion, rather than something they’ve already conquered and yet would be having to start over anyway.

I totally get you, like I myself make music, there’s plenty plenty of times where I’ll pass up on $1000 in sales just to sit by the beach and create music. It’s not all about money for a lot of these guys.

They need baseball to feel grounded, excited, motived to live.

It’s weird but I can totally relate.

I wouldn’t give him a six-pack of beer to pitch for my softball team. It is about the money! He should have retired after fleecing the Braves of $18 MILLION. Cole Hamels has made over $210 Million dollars in his big league career, not counting whatever the Dodgers paid him in 2021 (yes, he signed a free agent contract in August 2020 with LA, and he didnt work for them for nothing) to do less than what he did for the Braves in 2020.
He sees Scherzer and Verlander and DeGrom pulling down $30M Plus per year, and wants his share. Tom Glavine knew when to hang them up. John Smoltz knew when to hang them up. Cole, it’s your time.

It was memorable because Harper completely turned the tables on him by stealing home. Hamels ended up getting fined because he admitted to reporters after the game that he threw at Harper on purpose. Harper won that episode, hands down. It was kind of refreshing though for a pitcher not to lie about a deliberate plunking.

Hopefully plunked, not beaned. Getting beaned is when the batter is hit in the head (slang “the bean”). Everybody these days says a batter got beaned no matter where he gets hit, but that’s not what it meant originally. Here are the definitions in Merriam-Webster:

          bean

          noun

          5: HEAD, BRAIN

          merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bean

          beanball
          noun
          bean·ball ˈbēn-ˌbȯl
          : a pitch thrown at a batter’s head

Padres are accumulating a lot of depth on minor league deals. Hamels, Honeywell, Teheran, Font, and a couple others I can’t think of at the moment.

It’s not a bad strategy given that their rotation will need filler at the backend. They have about 10 guys lined up to compete for a few starts, Almost all of them will flame out by April 1, but they only need one or two to have any signs of life for the strategy to pay off.

    How’s the rotation?

    Darvish – strong
    Musgrove – strong
Snell – has thrown more than 129 innings in a season once in his career and that was 5 years ago
Martinez – 10 starts last year with a 4.30 ERA as a starter
    Lugo – hasn’t started a game since 2020

What’s the backup plan in case the question marks fail?
    Hamels, Honeywell and Teheran…

    ……ugh

Wacha just signed. Probably their #5. That means Lugo is now the swingman/6th starter. They also have Morejon who they want to stretch out to be a starter.

The minor league depth is now Hamels, Teheran, Font, Honeywell, Groome, Avila, Knehr, Weathers, and Brooks. (I stole most of that list from the article about the Wacha signing).

I wish the Angels had that much starting pitcher depth in the minors.

The Padres better hope they don’t have any injuries to their top 3 in the rotation or it’s gonna be a repeat of 2021.

The Dodgers lost Walker Buehler and won 111 games. Houston lost Verlander and went to the World Series.

Dodgers lost Walker… and in the playoffs to the Pads. I’m sure things would have been different with Buehler, and Verlander just pitched for Houston in the Series.

Hamels saw all the money thats been thrown around to 40 year old pitchers like Verlander, Scherzer, and Darvish (will be early 40s when contract ends). He wants a piece of the pie. No amount of money is ever enough for these guys. 40 mil for 39 and 40 years olds is the stupidest concept I’ve ever witnessed

Would love to see Hamels have a late career renaissance. I’m not expecting him to pull a Justin Verlander or anything crazy, but would be cool to see him do something like CC Sabathia did late into his career. In 2016-2018, he had a 3.76 ERA and averaegd 2.2 fWAR/2.6 bWAR a season. It’s not a one-to-one match-up but Sabathia was a lefty who changed up the way he pitched and approached batters. Maybe Hamels can do the same?

Moore signed for $7,550,000 on a one-year deal. I believe that would’ve put the Yankees over the next luxury tax threshold, and Hal is determined not to go there.

Not dumb at all. Moore would’ve been a great addition to the bullpen. But Hal isn’t Steve Cohen, who obviously doesn’t care what it costs to win.

Hamels joins two other much younger veterans in the minors, with no 40-man roster spot, Julio Teheran and Wilmer Font, both 32.

Teheran knocked around independent ball last year and ended up in the Mexican league, while Wilmer pitched in Korea the last two years as a full time starter.

You can’t forget those guys, they’re young enough to still have something in the tank, unlike the appropriately labeled “wild card”, 39 year old Hamels.

I wonder if he tries a crack at the bullpen if the guys in front of him don’t give way. He would be great as a left reliever if his stuff is there. Less likely to have a shoulder flare up.
