The MLB Trade Rumors Podcast, last heard in 2016 hosted by the esteemed Jeff Todd, has relaunched! Simon Hampton is now your host, and we’re very excited to bring the new show to you every week.
Episode 1 is now live on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your podcasts! Make sure you subscribe as well; use this link to find the show on Spotify and this one for Apple. You can also use the player at this link to listen, if you don’t use Spotify or Apple for podcasts.
This week, host Simon Hampton is joined by Anthony Franco to discuss a wide range of topics around the baseball world:
- An early look at the trade deadline possibilities, particularly focusing on Shohei Ohtani and what it make take for the Angels to listen to offers on the two-way star (3:19)
- Jake Cronenworth signed a seven-year, $80MM extension with the Padres, so what does that mean for San Diego’s chances at extending other players such as Juan Soto, Josh Hader and Blake Snell? (7:31)
- It’s easy to over-react to results in the first week of the season, so at what point is it reasonable to become concerned with a team’s performance? And what about the players? (12:30)
Plus, we answer your questions, including:
- Could the Marlins match up with the Yankees on a trade involving Oswald Peraza? And which of Miami’s pitchers could be in play at the deadline? (16:56)
- Will the Cardinals make a move to bolster their rotation at some stage this season? And if so, which players could be in play? (21:24)
- The Dodgers took a step back this winter, so how aggressive will they be at the deadline this year? And are they clearing payroll space for a crack at Shohei Ohtani? (26:09)

Luzardo for Peraza.
You heard it first
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
It would have to be more going to Miami in order to obtain Luzardo.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Probably not much more. The two bad seasons for Luzardo happened.
MarlinsFanBase
But neither bad season was in the last two years for the improving 25-year old.
Hammerin' Hank
Luzardo is quite a bit more valuable than Peraza, I would say. The Yanks are gonna have to give up more than that to get a frontline starter.
JoeBrady
I don’t think so. We’re talking small sample sizes here, but Luzardo has a 4.6 bWAR/162 in 2022/23, and he was a former top-10 prospect, with 4 years left. Team needs probably rules here, but if I were the RS, for example, I’d much prefer Luzardo over Peraza, and I like Peraza.
Big Smoke
Oh thank God, I thought I wasn’t gonna see my daily garbage trade proposal by a Yankees fan. Thanks
bronxmac77
Peraza for Reynolds. Aloha.
bronxmac77
Dominguez for Reynolds. Can do.
28rings
yuck, please no more ex Oakland pitchers… Jeff Weaver, Sonny Gray, Montas we’ve had enough… unless we flip him with Dominguez to Pittsburgh for Bryan Reynolds
Mike Timlincecum
Excited for this! Thanks for reviving

Hey Simon. Just a heads up, I use Spotify and Podcast App. I’m not the most IT savvy old guy that ever lived, but I cant find anything on Spotify. Podcast App has your test episode and old stuff.
Tim Dierkes
Hey can you give this link a try for Spotify?
open.spotify.com/episode/01QdiROUoqTsr3gGjKuZla
EL45
Can you tell your fantasy person to not add us to his email list without asking? I almost cancelled my TradeRumors subscription when I got that junk.
Tim Dierkes
That call does not involve Brad Johnson, but rather me.
Since something like 2/3 of MLBTR readers play fantasy baseball, I decided to send that content to baseball subscribers by default.
Hopefully you received the email where we announced the addition of NBA content to Front Office (baseball readers are not opted into that by default) and we included this link:
traderumors.com/subscription
That is where you would go to check boxes for which subjects you want and do not want. We have also added this to the welcome email for new subs, so that someone who wants to tweak their preferences will not be inconvenienced for long.
Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience.
EL45
I intentionally made sure none of the email boxes were checked a long time ago. And they still aren’t checked. Bad decision sending it out. How about an announcement on your website (like the podcast announcement) instead of ignoring your paying customers requests? Like the other poster said, link wasn’t clickable in app anyway.
Tim Dierkes
If I’m interpreting correctly, I think you and foppert are talking about two different things. foppert is trying to get to the new podcast on Spotify, I think, and you’re trying to ensure you do not receive fantasy baseball emails as part of Front Office.
With your permission, I’d be happy to send you an email so we can look into the situation further and see whether we have some sort of bug. I do see that you’re currently unsubscribed from the emails.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
@EL45 Odd thing to complain about.
Tim Dierkes
No, it’s OK. As I’m looking into this, I think we may have accidentally added some people to Fantasy Baseball emails that we shouldn’t have. Still checking into it.
EL45
Thanks for looking into it. And @Ignorant Son-of-a-b, I’m not interested in what you find odd. Have a good day.
EL45
Thanks Tim. Yea I got two emails out of the blue on April 3 about fantasy baseball. I clicked the unsubscribe again, but like you saw, I was never subscribed to any of your emails. Thanks again for looking into it / fixing it.
Hammerin' Hank
Yeah a very odd thing to complain about. These fantasy haters are so over-the-top ridiculous whining about it.
EL45
No one said anything about hating fantasy. I hate getting emails unsolicited, which is what my comment was about.. I wish I had time to play fantasy. It is a blast.
HankHollywood
Make sure you over react about an email.
bronxmac77
I did that…to piss you off. Looks like it worked too.
bronxmac77
Wow. EL45 sure told YOU.
HAve a good day.
CubsWin108
EL45 is actually having a mental breakdown over getting a couple emails a week about baseball
bronxmac77
Make sure you mind your own fookin’ business.
bronxmac77
You’re having a time-of-the-month episode worrying about EL45.
CubsWin108
????
foppert
I’ll have another go because I’m on the app on my phone and having to type that link in…..but “page not available” first 2 attempts.
foppert
All good. 3rd time lucky.
foppert
I can open in app from the web link but get nothing when I search from the app.
Thanks
Tim Dierkes
Meaning when you search in Spotify?
I’m guessing that since we’re new in Spotify, our show doesn’t have much search juice. When I put “mlb trade rumors podcast” into Spotify, the “top” results still don’t show us.
When I hit the Podcasts & Shows button rather than Top, and go to See All, we’re about ten spots down.
I think if you go here:
open.spotify.com/show/4ArrDyU8Ebq6cEi2k5GKu1
You’ll get the show rather than episode link in Spotify, and you can hit Follow there.
foppert
Yes. When I search “mlb trade rumours” in the app I come up empty.
Ok. I’ve got you favourited anyway now,
so all good.
Got to go do some work !
Thanks for the help.
LFGSD619
“Trading a player when he’s a pending FA and you are out of the race is disrespectful to the player!” XD XD XD
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Not to poke at all, but did the search not turn anything up because of how you spell rumors>
SODOMOJO
Thanks for taking good care of us Tim!
foppert
That’s not a poke, that’s a good point.
I was probably typing in Australian.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Just didn’t want you to take offense, since I meant none.. You never know these days!
gbs42
I bet “u” were.
Fraham_
Simon Hampton has a very nice British accent.
Tim Dierkes
It’s actually a New Zealand accent!
DCartrow
So his favorite team is the Aukland A’s?
LFGSD619
New Zealand is the adjective?
foppert
Ha ha. That accent is classic Kiwi Private School. As smooth as butter.
Well done, gentlemen. Good content.
An easy listen.
DrDan75
Blake Snell is a Seattle native who was a rabid Mariners fan as a kid. I’m sure he would love to sign a Joe Musgrove style deal and finish his career in the northwest, particularly now that the Mariners are one of the better teams in baseball. The Padres would have to literally bury him in cash to get him to stay, and even then he probably wouldn’t.
Tim Dierkes
Also worth noting that he’s a Boras guy. Those free agents can often exceed expectations in the market.
CrikesAlready
Re: Blake Snell..
I am feeling relieved he’s soon gone.
From his DGAF spring training regimen (until this year, his walk year) to what seems to be 100 pitches before the 5th inning in a vast majority of his appearances, he feels like a liability.
If he could keep his A-list stuff and regularly get through 7, great. He just doesn’t seem to be able to do that.
If AJ Preller extends him, I would be concerned that A) He doesn’t watch the games, or B) Boras has compromising video with him and a donkey.
carllafong
Because Snell is from Seattle you think he likes the rain, a small town, and the most travel of any team in the league… not sure this as such a slam dunk as you think.
mrmackey
If the Yankees trade Peraza, they should be looking at LH hitting OFs.
CardsFan57
I’m sure a trade for Luzardo could be worked out with the Cardinals if Miami is willing to move him. A package could be centered around O’Neill, Carlson, or Donovan. They really need to get Chisholm out of centerfield.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
@cards. After Marmol throwing O’Neill under the bus after last nights game I could see him being traded. After watching the video though I can’t see what the fuss was all about. RAJ has done much worse and multiple times in the past for the Braves.
CardsFan57
Either way, position have to be moved for pitching. O’Neill may have been rubbing Marmol the wrong way. I think O’Neill is the one they’d like to move because of service time. The trade partner may be just as worried about service time and prefer one of the younger players.
It’s a shame the Yankees are out if available pitchers. They could use an outfielder.
angelsfan4life
The same National Baseball Reporters, who said there was no way, Ohtani would sign with the Angels. When he was coming from Japan. Are the same one’s saying, he is guaranteed to leave after this season. I’m not saying he will stay with the Angels. All I’m saying, don’t count him as good as gone, as they say he is.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It is almost a guarantee that Ohtani will test free agency as the season progresses. That doesn’t exclude the possibility of the Angels being able to extend or resign him.
Tim Dierkes
Could you name any of the national reporters who said that? I remember his courting process in 2017, and I have no recollection of anyone credible ever saying there was “no way” Ohtani would sign with the Angels. I don’t even remember anyone saying a certain team was the favorite, aside from a likely preference for the west coast.
mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/shohei-ohtani-plans-to-…
Tim Dierkes
From what Steve wrote here, I’d say the Angels were a surprising landing spot at the time, but I’m not clear on which reporters said there was no way it’d happen as you’re saying.
mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/angels-to-sign-shohei-o…
Plugnplay
Surprising Ohtani Angels landing spot? Not so much. No NL DH spot at the time he signed, you’d have to give the Angels as good of a chance if not better, that any top 5 guess you should of had.
Quick bottom line: Trout factor, play with best to be the best.
2) Big market and laid back market, with a big Japanese influence.
3) like above, no DH in the NL at the time.
4) West coast teams had a big advantage
To break it down. It wasn’t a surprise at all. What other west Coast team was he going to go to? Maybe the M’s. Since we’ll throw out the A’s. That said, could be Dodgers/Padres this turn around.
carllafong
And they said there was no way Trout would sign. If the Angels are winning– and they are, and if they continue to win, why wouldn’t he resign with them if the Angels have a 12-year $600M deal on the table? I believe he will re-sign.
jeff santos
Don’t worry they’ll start losing again. When Ohtani leaves during FA, Trout should ask to be traded also. Because thanks to Arte Moreno, no one will watch the Angels.

Tim I can see there is a podcast on the Audacy app but I don’t see any content to play. Should I be able to find it there?
websoulsurfer
Can you do a podcast on Josh Donaldson’s hamstring injury earlier today? Had to listen to actual radio station to learn about it.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s day-to-day as well as the rest of recovering NYY players on their website.

I’m strictly a serial killer, true crime podcast type of guy..but if you guys ever do an episodes involving MLB players that killed people let me know
gbs42
Great job, Simon and Anthony!
Next week’s listener question: What’s Taiks Waititi really like? 😉
Stan Not the Man
Podcast sounds like BBC radio show on baseball. NOT GOOD.
diggin4three
The Cardinals organization should have been able to easily foresee its pitching staff would not be good enough to really compete against elite teams. The offense should not have to be relied upon to bailout a weak starting staff every game, just because the organization refused to spend enough money to get real help, as usual.
drasco036
Mo has been a great GM/PBO but I think signing Wilco was a mistake.
diggin4three
I think “great” is a gross overstatement. Everyone always talks about our consecutive “winning season” streak, but I wonder how many of them actually know the total W/L record during that stretch. I saw the numbers in a recent article, it’s not impressive, but what they do represent perfectly is an organization that always does just enough to keep the turnstiles spinning.
diggin4three
The Cards are 1288-1037 since their last losing season in 2007. 251 games over .500 in the past 15 seasons, an average winning season of 16.7 games over .500. I know every fan should be thankful for having a competitive team every year, and I am, but it does get old seeing the organization do just enough to appease the fanbase, even after stating multiple times it’s “all in”. I bet most serious fans knew the organization would do nothing after signing Contreras, even though everyone who really pays attention knew the team had(s) some serious holes to fill. It is what it is. We can agree to disagree, and no, I didn’t expect my opinion to be popular around here.
drasco036
Justin Steeles last 8 games: 0.85 era with nearly a 4/1 k/bb ratio and yet he gets zero love.
