Yankees Designate Deivi Garcia For Assignment, Place Carlos Rodon On Injured List

By Anthony Franco and Steve Adams | August 7, 2023 at 3:49pm CDT

The Yankees announced a slate of roster moves prior to tonight’s game, most notably designating one-time top pitching prospect Deivi García for assignment and placing lefty Carlos Rodón on the 15-day IL with a strained hamstring. New York also reinstated Jonathan Loáisiga from the 60-day injured list — hence the need for a 40-man spot — and recalled lefty Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

García was once viewed as a potential mid-rotation arm. The 5’9″ righty appeared among Baseball America’s top 100 prospects going into both 2020 and ’21. He debuted with six starts during the shortened campaign, posting decent strikeout and walk numbers despite an ERA pushing 5.00. At the time, it seemed he was in line for a permanent rotation spot in the near future. At the very least, his high-octane stuff was expected to play out of the bullpen.

Things didn’t play out that way. García was tagged for a 6.85 ERA at Triple-A in 2021. He only made two MLB appearances that season. He followed up with a 6.89 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A the following season. The Yankees abandoned hopes of García as a starter this year, using him in relief for all but one of his 28 minor league appearances.

It hasn’t translated to markedly improved results. The 24-year-old owns a 5.67 ERA through 46 frames with the RailRiders. His 20.5% strikeout percentage is a few points below average and he’s walking almost 15% of batters faced. After three seasons of subpar production in the upper minors, the Yankees no longer feel they can keep giving him opportunities to figure things out.

Since the trade deadline has come and gone, New York will have to place García on waivers. It’s no sure thing he’ll be claimed at this point, though it wouldn’t be a surprise if another club takes a flier on his former prospect status. García still has a reasonably live arm, averaging 94.9 MPH on his heater during a pair of big league appearances this summer. There are clearly significant command issues he’ll need to iron out if he’s to emerge as even a solid middle reliever. García is in his last option season; if another team claims him, they could keep him in Triple-A for the rest of the year but would have to carry him on next year’s big league roster (if he holds a 40-man spot all offseason).

While García’s DFA marks a painful concession by the organization that he hasn’t developed as hoped, the loss of Rodón is clearly a bigger impact in the short term. Fortunately, it’s not expected to be a serious issue. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters it’s a low-grade strain that isn’t expected to keep him out for much longer than the minimum (relayed by Greg Joyce of the New York Post).

Rodón has had a frustrating first season in the Bronx. The two-time All-Star dealt with forearm and back issues that cost him the first half of the year. Since returning, he’s been ineffective through six starts. He owns a 7.33 ERA with a notably decreased 20.5% strikeout rate and lofty 14.8% walk percentage over 27 innings. His velocity remains at the same level as it was when he was dominating hitters with the White Sox and Giants the last two years. The injuries have clearly kept him from finding any kind of consistency to this point in his Yankee tenure though.

Loáisiga has missed over three months after surgery to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. He’s been limited to three appearances on the season. When healthy, the 28-year-old righty is one of New York’s better relievers. He racks up huge grounder rates and has a 3.53 career ERA.

If the Yankees miss the playoffs they’ll likely clean house and that’s not too early to call it a “bust”. Do you really want your team to rely on a fragile, injury riddled track record moving forward?

Are there many examples of someone signing a big deal struggling in their first year and producing good results the next 5 years?

In order for longterm contracts to provide even half the value they should, in general it’s in the first couple years. Players don’t suddenly get better with age now that steroids are policed better.

Given his injury history I’d bet on that contract being horrendous going forward.

Jose Berrios first year of his contract with the Jays was the worst of his career, by far. Year two looks to be his best and it’s possible he may continue this way given his history.

So one yet to be determined. Anyone else. Berrios was pretty good after the deadline that year which may have lead to the extension, although they probably started with extension talks as soon as he got to Toronto.

I was mainly talking about free agents who changed teams after signing big deals.

Jose Berrios has a 4.03 FIP, so it’s not that farfetched to think he would not do well. Jays overpaid.

Jays will probably get to the postseason but will hit that wall first round in the playoffs like they always do.

John Lackey with the Red Sox was awful in his first year. He turned it around big time after recovering from his TJS and helped them win a title. Don’t give up on Rodon yet; he is still a very talented pitcher. This year has been a bust but his pre-season injury probably had a lot to do with it.

You make it sound as if Rodon had been healthy and only now got hurt. In that case, your point would be well heeded. But with Rodon’s checkered history, starting off with this bad a season bodes poorly – as he’ll likely have additional periods of this deal shortened or worsened by other issues. He’ll likely have his better periods too, but this puts the deal in a starting hole.

Dorothy, citing Lackey is a point of concern with this, not a point in favor of rebound. Lackey was heavily mediocre right off the bat, then bad, then didn’t pitch, all in an expensive 5 year deal. Everything he did after that only salvaged the total return to not be a disaster, but it was still a failed signing overall. His first full season back he still only put up a 117 ERA+, then drooped to 111 before he was traded at the deadline. It was only his bonus extra season (due to a preexisting injury clause) after that trade that was of notable value, not enough to get it close to par.

Berrios hasn’t been injured for every year of his MLB Carrer and is a work horse of a pitcher with very safe mechanics, and overall had a top-of-the-line development from the Twins Pitching Coaches

Compared to Rondon having so many injuries and having to work with the 2nd most unserious organization in Baseball (Yankees are most unserious) The White Sox who completely ruined his durability

Doom and bloom the jays in 15,16 beat the rangers in the 1st round. And have won the World Series twice. So they don’t always exit in the first round.

You say that as if that’s not an accomplishment. Baseball playoffs are a complete crapshoot that’s basically a coin flip and hardly ever signals who the better team is.

@iverbure you do have a point, but recently Jays have been trying to buy rather than develop and we know how that turns out. Plus, they haven’t done well against their own division. I don’t think they stand a chance against the Rays or O’s. Both teams are just way more complete.

Who/how will they “clean house”? Donaldson is off the books and some other fringe contributors are FA, but the guys like Rizzo, DJ, Judge, Cole, Rodon, are here to stay. I would suggest firing the manager as a first step.

The rays and orioles have certainly played better however nearly the entire rotation of the rays is hurt. The orioles rotation doesn’t scare anyone. The jays have as good of SP as anyone in the AL and their lineup on paper should be better than what it has been all year. They can’t possibly be as bad with RISp all year as they have.

I think they’re as dangerous as anyone in the AL. Going to need a healthy bichette back obviously though.

It just goes to show you that “top” prospects are really a crap shoot when it comes to their performance in MLB. It seems even more so with Yankees prospects for some reason. Maybe it’s the excessive media coverage of the team that makes it feel this way.

@Dorothy- I feel a smart move for the Red Sox would be to sign Deivi to a minor league contract, and to hire Pedro to work with him. Garcia still has a excellent power arm, there’s no reason why he couldn’t help some team out there in their bullpen, and maybe eventually become a starter again down the road.

The Yankees have been losing all season due to a weakened offense, not because of their starting pitching. The loss of German and now Rodon again will definitely hurt too though.

This was the season to put the entire Florial drama to rest. Put him out there and let him play!! Couldn’t do any worse then the band of AAAA players or infielders they’ve already used this season

I agree completely. he might be a bust, or not. It appears we will never know. He has received exactly 50 major league bats over the course of multiple seasons, in sporadic bursts. Not exactly a adequate sample size. And whether he can hit or not, it would be an immediate improvement on the team since the so-called leftfielders that they have been using cannot field to save their lives. they elect the keystone cops out there, they run into each other, they drop balls, etc.

I would have said the same thing before this season but I think Hal is finally starting to feel the heat. This is the highest payroll the Yankees have ever had and they’re at serious risk of missing the postseason. I don’t think Hal can watch that happen and not make wholesale changes

What you don’t realize is after 6 years of the failures or Boone and Cashman, both were given extensions. Why? No one knows. However, with that being said, it’s clear as day that ownership is content with exits in the playoffs every season

It does mean something. Teams just don’t hand out 4 year extensions for guys they plan on firing. It would have been hilarious George operating in today’s baseball during everyone every year trading for the biggest worst contracts signing free agents to record terrible contracts. Most Yankee fans think that’s the way to win in today’s baseball and they really need a reality check.

I can’t imagine Hal envisioned this type of miserable season when he handed out those contracts. Or the embarrassing interviews those clowns give on a regular basis.

You might want to check Cashman’s and Boone’s salaries, then check the Yankees estimated yearly revenue. They’re a drop in a bucket.

I’d imagine George would have no emotional attachment to Cashman and likely would have fired him sometime between 2013-16. Then had the sense to hire an exec who is capable of developing internal talent while also spending wisely. Like the Dodgers with Friedman.

Most Yankees fans these days recognize that they need to do a better job developing their own talent and free agency is no longer a viable method of team building. However the Yankees are still very much capable of giving out big contracts. The issue is who those contracts have, and haven’t, gone to.

The problem is that the Yankees don’t have a strong core of rookies to build their team around so the only way they can stay competitive right now is to overspend in free agency. This team has the worst future outlook of any team in the AL East right now. Too many aging players with big contracts on the MLB roster who cannot be traded unless NY eats most of their salary. With very few MLB-ready prospects, things are going to get worse for the Yankees over the next 2-3 seasons. They might have to consider a complete tear down & rebuild but I’m not sure Hal will allow that. They should at least take a page out of the Mets playbook and pay a majority of their veteran’s salaries to move them for some young talent. I think the Mets will have $80M in dead money on their books for next season but at least they got some decent prospects back in their deals, but the Mets had more desirable talent to move than the Yankees do.

Things aren’t nearly that dire. This season is likely chalked but with a couple smart moves, next year things will be fine. The Yankees pitching staff is among the best in the league, they just need some offense to back it up. A healthy Judge and Rizzo along with further development from Volpe will go a long way towards fixing that problem. They also have a pair of prospects who should be ready next year in Austin Wells and Everson Pereira. Guys like Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, and Trey Sweeney should also be ready in late 2024/early 2025

@Ronk-The best case scenario is for Hal to sell the team, again not happening. Expect Cashman for at least 3 more years as the GM. Hal will never fire him. I wish and hope I’m wrong here. Assigning him a new role in the organization would be a great move, nevertheless expect Cashman to walk away on his own or play out the 3 years remaining. I agree with you this has turned very ugly though, just like little stevie.

Things are not that dire, a few tweaks ,a few additions, and a few subtractions and this team could be playoff bound again. of course they will have to be willing to spend some money. How difficult gonna be to get a major league caliber left fielder, not even talking all star.
What has been noted above, the main problem is cashman and whether he is willing or able to do what is necessary. It has appeared over the last few years that he has not. Instead of making the changes that everyone can see are needed,he stubbornly digs in deeper, and insist that things are fine the way they are.

Hal isn’t selling the team, nor should he. He signed off on a $293MM payroll, I’m not sure what more you want him to do. Hal’s problem is not being able to part ways with Cashman. If the rumblings continue, I can’t see him ignoring this problem much longer

Hey Doc, I think Rodon will pitch a lot better next season if he is healthy, not looking for any miracles this season, starting to think of waiving the white flag actually. Hopefully we can sign Cody Bellinger in the off-season if he reaches free agency. (He has a option) I wouldn’t mind signing or trading for some lefty contact hitters also. Switch hitting Dylan Carlson should be another player we could try to trade for also. I would think of entertaining offers for Gleyber also. We probably should of traded him to the Marlins at the deadline this season. I don’t think the Yankees will offer him an extension so it probably makes sense to trade him in the off-season.

I like bellinger especially.Gleyber, is a mystery. Like everything else, they are probably undecided about what to do with him also. If they do not plan on extending him, they should try to trade him while his value is high. reportedly at the trade deadline, Cashman was shopping him, but his asking price was so high that teams balked at it. something like four high-level pitching prospects.

They release Deivi, but yet continue to hang onto florial, but never give him a chance in the outfield. It’s not like they have any decent players out there that are keeping him from his tryout. he’s had exactly 50 major league at bats, spread out amongst multiple years. That’s not actually much of a sample size to assess his ability.

Do Yankees fans really want to go through this year in and year out? Relying on Judge and Cole to get them to a championship only to maybe sneak into the playoffs and get roped by a better team? The Yanks are not a powerhouse and not scary. There was a time when teams feared going into Yankee Stadium because it would be like sticking your head in a beehive. Now, it’s not intimidating because you know that outside of Judge, you’ll get Ks, tappers to 2nd and weak popups to foul territory. Also, they tend to way over hype guys in the minors but none of them are impact guys. Just more Ks, tappers to 2nd and weak popups to foul territory mixed in with the occasional homer to the short porch

The problem with the Yankees is even though the majority of the team is very mediocre, they’ll sign one or two huge names to massive contracts and expect to be able to win a championship with one or two players (Judge and Cole). You cannot win like that. Maybe it gets you through the regular season but only if the one or two players stay healthy. The Yanks won’t rebuild because they think Yankees fans won’t accept it. I think they would if they see a plan and direction. As it is now, they are very very mediocre.

Steinbrenner should sell now because the Yankee future looks dim.

I wuld love the Marlins to take a crack at Deivi Garcia to see if they can fix him.

Talks between Orioles FO and Gunnar and Adley agents already happening? Ugh. Budget sensitive owner vs a high profile player’s agent. Good luck with that.

More realistic extensions for now are definitely Mullins followed by a Hays and Santander.

Trade Mountcastle. He’s the only piece that will get Os a league level opening day SP. Roll dice with O’Hearn and others at 1st base
