Gold Glove Winners Announced

By Mark Polishuk | November 5, 2023 at 7:56pm CDT

Major League Baseball announced the Gold Glove winners tonight, as selected by a group of managers, coaches, and statistical analysis.  Twenty-five percent of the selection total was determined by SABR’s Defensive Index metrics, while the other 75 percent was determined by votes from all 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team.  Of the latter pool, managers and coaches were limited to voting on players in their own league, and they weren’t allowed to vote for any players on their own team.  The utility Gold Glove wasn’t determined with any votes, but rather via a defensive formula calculated by SABR and Rawlings.

The list of winners…

  • AL catcher: Jonah Heim (1st Gold Glove)….finalists: Alejandro Kirk, Adley Rutschman
  • AL first base: Nathaniel Lowe (1st)….finalists: Ryan Mountcastle, Anthony Rizzo

What a defensive season for rookie Bailey.

Idk enough about Bailey’s defense to say one way or the other, but there are several other players that are on this list that really weren’t that great defensively.

Also, I’m probably biased, but the fact that Michael Harris didn’t win the GG is absolutely absurd. Dude did nothing but make highlight play after highlight play all year long, and made difficult plays look routine.

Maybe the kid from Colorado was just that much better, let’s be honest, he plays for the Rockies, so idk how his season went, but I find it really difficult to imagine anyone playing a better CF than what I watched Harris play.

Maybe I’m wrong, and if so, that dude must just be the second coming of Andruw Jones or something, idk..

Michael Harris II is a good defensive CF and not winning the Gold Glove award doesn’t change that. However, the most obvious choice in all MLB was CF where Colorado rookie Brenton Doyle was the winner.. He’s that good.

In the AL, Cleveland’s LF Steven Kwan is the only other obvious choice for Gold Glove winner.

The winners aren’t as subjective to opinions and writers whims as they once were but, they still have that element. When I evaluate, I remove the league, team, age and name. This is My List:

          C ARI Gabriel Moreno
          1B LAD Freddie Freeman
          2B CLE Andres Gimenez
          3B PIT Ke’Bryan Hayes
          SS COL Ezequiel Tovar

          LF CLE Steven Kwan
          CF COL Brenton Doyle
          RF WSN Lane Thomas

          SP WSN Patrick Corbin

Basically if you can just you probably can win the GG in NL LF if you can tie your shoes and walk chew gum at the same time.

With Rosario i think have a past history of being able to place their outfielders into spots to make more plays. I remember when Nick Markakis won a gold glove for for right field he wasn’t that great.

Yeah, Rosario was insane lol, but his defense was pretty good this year tbh.

Now, with that being said, it was LARGELY due to the fact he has Michael Harris playing next to him. Rosario really only had to go for balls hit to him in a short range, and he did do fairly well.

Even so, I would NEVER even consider Rosario for a GG award..lol That’s honestly just laughable.

They should have just given it to three outfielders, because Michael Harris DEFINITELY deserved a GG for his play in the field this year. That young man is a defensive wizard in CF, he gets excellent jumps, takes perfect routes, and plays balls at the wall with the very best of the best.

I feel like this is a couple of those old head voting scenarios where a good hitter at the spot also got the additional hardware. Palmeiro, Jeter, Abreu all come to mind as scenarios like that.

I’m thankful the voting has at least gotten better. I think Bill James and the Fielding Bible have a lot to do with that.

Glad to see Dubon got a gold glove, he worked hard this year and played great defense both in center and 2nd, his bat also showed significant improvement since he joined the Astros. Nice work by Nathaniel Lowe as well, went from one of the worst last year to one of the best. Gotta appreciate that hard work paying off.

Every time I watched the Pads Kim was playing SS. When he didn’t win at SS I did sort of jump the gun because I didn’t know he won at 2b. Anyways, he was the best fielding SS I saw last year and I do watch a lot of MLB, although admittedly my viewing is spread over several teams, not just one home team.

You based your opinion on at most 17 games? Because you said yourself, every time you watched Kim play, he was at SS. Kim played 153 innings at short which equates to 17 games.

Nico had 12 DRS to Kim’s 10 and 14 OAA to Kim’s 7. You may watch a lot of MLB but you don’t know what you’re talking about.

And for shortstop, Swanson led the entire the league regardless of position.

Assuming- Peraza figures out MLB pitching, AND either or both aren’t traded away.
Frankly, this off-season I’m more concerned about a knee-jerk reaction to the 2023 season than anything.

Semien was one of the most UNDERPAID veteran players in baseball this season. 7.4 WAR for his $26 million salary is an incredible amount of surplus value. More than $40 million in SURPLUS value.

Among veteran players with 6 plus years of service time only Betts was more of a bargain for his team.

should we point out the irony that Semien has been worth more to the Rangers than Seager both last season and the season before while being paid almost 25% less Seager yet is overpaid. What does this make Seager and why is it in their name? Wonder if there is some confusion here.

so what your saying by this logic Degrom who will only pitch what 6 games over two years is not overpaid and is worth every penny because if he played full seasons he could be a shoe in cy young candidate. So the rangers top target for pitching is James Paxton long term deal 20 -25 mil a year for 6-7 years sound about right?

By this same logic, Ernie Clement with the Blue Jays last season would have been a top player to go after and even better can play multiple positions. a 144 OPS+ with almost 900 OPS. with only 50 PA and a 1 WAR he would have been worth what 8 WAA?. Are you sending multiple top prospects for him?

Also your stats of the at bats between 1st and 2nd would on average be less than 20 difference. The average count of plate appearances per game for 1st spot is 4.04 and 2nd is 3.97. so not sure where your 20% number comes from unless you counting games played in there as well where the last 3 years Semien has averages over 160 and Seagar averages 110. What if Semien was out 3 of those games this year and it cost them 3 wins .. the rangers would be looking up at the playoffs instead of winning the world series. Also how do you know in those games missed Seager would have been on a cold streak and all those numbers fall in line to his career averages or prior season numbers when he played most of that season? Which are still very good but not his 2023 numbers.

If the award were given out based on defense he should have won. He had better defensive numbers across the board than Garcia, but Garcia had the better offensive season and for whatever reason that still remains a factor in the GG voting.

In his prime, Andrelton Simmons was absolutely the best defensive SS I’ve ever seen..

The fact most teams wanted to draft him as a Pitcher is still crazy to me, but it isn’t that surprising considering he also had an absolute cannon!!

Most teams also wanting to draft Austin Riley and Michael Harris as pitchers also baffles me, especially Michael Harris.

Just human nature. If the difference is real close, like Hayes and Arenado last year for example. You’re taking the better all around player, at least last season. It’s either that, or you have to, using a boxing analogy, have to knock out the champion.

Curiously the All star game has evolved away from the tie goes to the champion mentality which used to be the case back in the day when it was largely a popularity contest and you’d see the same boring Steve Garvey mugs (8 consecutive all stars, 4 GG) year after year. Now you see an abundance of first timers each year which while perhaps overly prone to small sample size theater, at least mixes it up some. So bring on the Bailey, Doyles, and Kims. We hardly know you.

I use ops in all-star voting. Even though I have no idea what a good ops is, because I have no idea how to figure out slugging percentage. I don’t think fan voting should be a factor, instead it seems to be the biggest factor. I like good defense but readily admit it’s a non-factor in most people’s opinions, including my own.

These gold glove awards are just awful. As much as I don’t like Lindor, he was easily the best shortstop in all of baseball this year and it wasn’t even close. As far as Volpe goes, he played a lot but he seemed pretty average in my opinion. I don’t watch many AL teams play so I can’t say who was better than him, no one really stood out to me but I’d probably give it to Correa. I’m not a fan of GG for outfielders. It makes no sense why each outfield position gets their own GG, it should be the top 3 fielders in the outfield (aka 3 Center Fielders). Ha-Seong Kim should of been the GG for second base. I was really surprised Tommy Edman didn’t get win for utility, he would have been my go to for that position for GG. No idea how Mountcastle lost to Heim, that was a straight up robbery

Some love to the 3 Dbacks finalists, of whom 2 won Gold Gloves and the other should have!

Christian Walker’s repeat was an absolute runaway win. Someone mentioned that this award just goes to guys that pass the eye test. That is definitely Not true of Walker. He passes both the eye test and the defensive numbers test.

Gabby Moreno absolutely slammed the door on other team’s running games by throwing out even the best base stealers.

Alek Thomas should have won NL CF Gold Glove! The guy made highlight reel catches on virtually a nightly basis, and was the core of the “No Fly” defense the Dbacks OF of Thomas, Carroll, Gurriel and McCarthy.

Reliable and reproducible defensive metrics have been unbelievably difficult to produce. So many of the various metrics have relied on the biases of humans to make judgments. Now, with the ability to track all players and the position of the ball, the defensive metric may be the single most accurate measurement in baseball (if properly implemented. ) MLB calls it Outs Above Average. However, some players with great range and yet they may not look as good as the fielder who lunges for the ball at the last minute.

With those caveats in mind, here are the OAA for the GG winners and the player with the OAA at that position. In some cases, one could argue for the non-top OAA player. But in others, no way.

    AL
    1b: NLowe (5) vs. Rizzo (6).
    2b: Gimenez (18)
    3b: Chapman (4) vs. Garcia (13).
ss: Volpe (1) vs. Witt (14) (or even Franco (12))
    lf: Kwan (9)
    cf: Kiermaier (13)
rf: Garcia (4) vs. Brenna (5).

    NL:
    1b: Walker (11).
    2b: Hoerner (13) vs. Estrada (20).
    3b: Hayes (17).
ss: Swanson (20). Best in the league
lf: Happ (-7) vs. Yelich (4). (Yes, negative -7.)
    cf: Doyle (16)
    rf: Tatis (11)

Thank you for this. Even the eye test would tell you that Ian Happ was a defensive liability out there, riding on his reputation (he started out well initially as a CF) and his multi positional flexibility. It soon became apparent that he has flexibility because he doesn’t handle any position particularly well. The -7 OAA is clearly empirical evidence of that, not to mention all the balls that would ping pong off him but weren’t called errors. Hate to make him the poster child of this because he’s a sensitive dude who sounds like he’s gonna cry in his radio appearances and brews great coffee ( he should get a food network gig ) but potential trades have broken down because of his defensive question marks.

The Gold Glove awards may be the biggest joke of any award in all of sports, and even the entertainment world. I first realized this when Bobby Abreu won a GG while playing for the Phillies. He had made 0 errors and had a decent amount of assists, but he was terrible as far as range goes, and anyone who watched him play on a daily basis,(or close to it), gave him grief about his defensive efforts, and running jokes were him being allergic to the wall and the RF line.

In any event, there are so many poor selections each year, and I’ll start with two Phillies who were wronged, 1) Bryson Stott is/was the best defensive 2B this season, and is better than Nico.2) Zack Wheeler is a great defensive SP, but he has a minimum of 2( Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker and maybe even 4- Nola and Sanchez) better defensive SPs on his own team.

I also think JT Realmuto was robbed again. He started 135 games behind the plate and calls a great game for all of his pitchers, keeps base runners honest, with his league best pop time, and great arm, and for him to only have 2 Gold Glove Awards in his career is preposterous! In his 5 seasons with the Phillies, he’s caught 145 ,47(of 60), 139, 132, & 135 games and has been a stellar defensive C, offensive C, and baserunner. And that doesn’t include his years with Miami.

Last year The Fielding Bible gave their award to Arrenado even though Hayes beat him out using the defensive value system invented by The Fielding Bible.

Gold Glove awards are about as logically driven as HOF selections these days.

What type of horrible take is this? Semien was an ironman, defensive stalwart, and all star leadoff hitter for the World Series champions. There is absolutely nothing objective on which to base your claim of overrated.

As someone who watched every Astros game this season, Dubon shouldn’t even sniff a gold glove. I’m really not sure how they hand these things out??? Rotated between 2B and CF and he did an admirable job filling in for Altuve at 2nd when he was hurt. BUT in CF Dubon was a HUGE liability. Didn’t take good routes to the ball, anytime he got near the wall he was scared and missed balls that were sure outs. He did a great job filling in, but he is the worst CF I have ever watched, so I have not one clue how he won a gold glove??? Just taints the entire thing in my opinion when you give out an award for defense to the worst defender in all of baseball in CF.

I still hate the Varsho trade but it doesnt make sense he doesnt win a GG or Fielding Bible award when he has better defensive stats than the winners?

Yeah why the GG award is bizarre for rewarding players more renowned for hitting. Marcus has improved since his early days as a defensive sieve fo sho but should never be regarded as the very best

Does anybody here know how to sort Fielding Run Value by position on Baseball Savant or anywhere else where it’s housed? I can isolate OAA by position but can only find Fielding Run Value as a total of all defensive positions on the season.

Jay’s trade Gabby to keep what they perceive to be a better defensive catcher in Jansen… how’d that work out?! Horrible trade for the Jay’s already!

It was a horrible trade but it had nothing to do with Jansen (other than the fact they had 3 catchers). It had to do with their obsession with Varsho and that they would pay any cost for him.

What is a Brenton Doyle and why did they give him a charity gold glove?

Brenton Doyle. Wasn’t he the lesser known Murray in Caddyshack, fated to a career of disappointment and obscurity like other lesser knowns- your Clint Howard’s and Beau Bridges?
