Pitchers and catchers will be reporting to Spring Training in about three weeks but a slow offseason means there are still plenty of free agents out there. MLBTR already took a look at the catchers, shortstops, center fielders, first basemen and second basemen still available. We’ll take a look at the top DH options on the market next. Obviously, this is a subjective category. Any player can technically serve as a designated hitter, after all. There are a handful of older and/or defensively limited sluggers who aren’t likely to sign anywhere that doesn’t have substantial DH at-bats available. That’ll be the focus here.
- Jorge Soler: After opting out of the final year and $13MM on his contract with the Marlins, Soler should be in position for a multi-year deal. The 32-year-old belted 36 home runs with the Fish in 2023 despite the pitcher-friendly nature of their home park, reducing his strikeout rate to 24.3% — the second-lowest of his career. His 11.4% walk rate was the second-best in his career. Soler remained one of the best in the game in terms of strong contact, delivering an excellent 91.3 mph average exit velocity and 48% hard-hit rate. Unlike the others on this list, Soler is both in his early 30s and has a demonstrated history of hitting for top-of-the-scale power in the big leagues. Everyone’s power production was up during the juiced-ball 2019 season, but Soler still paced the American League with 48 homers and finished third in all of baseball that season. The Blue Jays have been most heavily connected to Soler recently. Other suitors like the D-backs (Joc Pederson) and Mariners (Mitch Garver) have signed other DH candidates. Beyond Toronto, the Mets, Giants and Angels have all been more loosely linked to Soler.
- J.D. Martinez: Martinez had a “down” season by his standards in 2022 when he “only” hit .274/.341/.448 with 16 homers in his final season with the Red Sox. He more than doubled that home run total with the Dodgers in 2023, smashing 33 homers despite tallying just 479 plate appearances. It’s possible that Martinez has begun selling out for power even more than he may already have been at times in the past. Last year’s 31.1% strikeout rate was easily the worst of his career, and his 7.1% walk rate was his lowest since 2014. Even if that’s the case, there’s no getting around the fact that JDM was a legitimate middle-of-the-order presence. He hit .271/.321/.572 overall and posted elite numbers in average exit velocity (93.4 mph) and hard-hit rate (53.4%). He’s entering his age-36 season, but Martinez can still mash.
- Justin Turner: Turner turned 39 in December but you’d never know it looking at last year’s .276/.345/.455 batting line with the Red Sox. Turner connected on 23 home runs, walked at a respectable 8.1% clip and struck out in 17.6% of his plate appearances — about five percentage points below the league average. Turner embodies the “professional hitter” archetype and can still take the field at any of third base, first base or perhaps even second base in a pinch. Turner hasn’t had a below-average season at the plate since establishing himself as a regular with the Dodgers back in 2014, and there’s little reason to think that’s about to change.
- Brandon Belt: He’ll turn 36 in April and has battled knee troubles in recent seasons, but Belt can still flat-out mash right-handed pitching. Like Turner, he can still play defense on a part-time basis — Belt logged 29 games at first base last season — but 70% of his games came as the Blue Jays’ designated hitter. Toronto only gave Belt 39 plate appearances against lefties, and he’ll be similarly limited wherever he signs next. But Belt hit .256/.375/.516 against righties as a member of the Jays, and he’s only gotten better in platoon situations as his career has progressed. Since making his MLB debut, he’s a .267/.364/.480 hitter against righties, but those numbers jump to .269/.376/.541 dating back to 2020 (150 wRC+).
- Mike Ford: The 31-year-old Ford doesn’t have anywhere near the track record of Soler, Martinez or Turner, but he posted eye-popping numbers in a half season with the Mariners last season. The former Yankees farmhand hit 16 homers in just 251 plate appearances. His .228 average was something of an eyesore, but Ford walked at a 9.6% clip and managed to post a .323 OBP while slugging .475. Despite the power production, Ford was non-tendered by the Mariners, who were looking to reduce their strikeout rate and may have worried that Ford’s 32.3% mark in that regard made him a long shot to replicate his success. That he was non-tendered also suggests that the M’s couldn’t find a trade partner for him, even with a modest $1.5MM projected salary. Ford could wind up signing a minor league pact or a very low-cost big league deal. He’s an affordable three-true-outcomes slugger who can be controlled through the 2026 season via arbitration by any team that signs him.

I seriously would take any of these guys over Stanton. God help the Yankees unload Stanton and possibly Torres.
Braves_saints_celts
I have a gut feeling that Stanton will have a pretty good year. I’m not saying like great or anything, but definitely a bounce back year. With Soto on the team i think it helps him mentally not think that he has to be the second best slugger behind judge. Having Soto and judge might actually help him because pitchers will be wanting to get away from judge and Soto and Stanton might be the lucky one getting pitches well in the zone that he’ll end up smashing

Awww poor you. Smh
Yankees fans I swear.
You know how FORTUNATE you are to be a fan of one of the handful of teams that have an obvious advantage over most of the league just because of MONEY.
Just imagine being a fan of a team that either can’t or won’t spend more than 100 mil on payroll.
Your team can spend 3 TIMES THAT and you’re COMPLAINING???
So disgusted with MLB’s broken payroll situation but also with fans like you who take take s*** for granted.
YankeesBleacherCreature
He’s one of the whinier ones here and doesn’t speak for the rest of us fans. His wishlist of players is almost comical with complete disregard to roster construction and financial considerations. I, for one, don’t take thirty straight seasons of finishing above .500 for granted.
YEP
You could always sign a veteran to a 1 year contract but it might cost some money depending on who you wanted to go after. Matt Chapman and Eduardo Escobar are your starting points to me.
brucenewton
Torres was the Yankee second best hitter last year. They should keep him. He could have an even better season in his contract year.
gotigers68
The Tigers need a proven hitter…..
Motor City Beach Bum
Or they can just let Keith and Malloy play! If they got a young 3B like Gorman, Marte or Mayo I’d vote to grab a veteran DH for a year and let Malloy get more time in AAA. Problem is it sounds like Greene is going to see time at DH early on and Tork and Canha as well. You’re right though…they are a bat short right now with their underwhelming 3B combo.
runningwithnailclippers
By Marte, do you mean the Reds’ Marte? Who would the Tigers trade for him? He would be costly.
Motor City Beach Bum
The Tigers have pitching but given that Cincy just signed a bunch of mid tier guys for the big team and have a bunch of highly rated young pitchers I’d say that ship has sailed. Oh…and Cincy overvalues their prospects too. Someone like Gorman or Miguel Vargas from LAD might be more realistic, but chances are they just wait around to bring up Jung next year.
YEP
If Jace has any seasons like Josh had this pass as rookie then tigers might have a 3rd baseman of the future.
gotigers68
The Royals just signed Adam Frazier. I’ll bet right now, that he hits better than whatever we have playing 2B…..
Motor City Beach Bum
As down as I was on Ibanez at the start of the year he played very well at 2B last year. Way better than Frazier. Keith could end up being ROY. I think 3B is going to be the big gap this year. Between Ibanez and Keith I actually think 2B will be a strength.
gotigers68
I’ll take your word on it. I’m writing this down…..:-)
Murphy NFLD
As a jays fan if they were goin the trade route i want Nick Castellanos and despite what philly fans say ive read on philly sites they want to reduce there 1b/DH bats and Nicl would go before Harper or Schwarber, but philly would have to pay down some of his 60M over 3 years to the 48-50 range
Murphy NFLD
If there going FAs i wanted Hoskins and figured he would sign for 2 and an opt out. He hammers LHP and has been nothing but consistent sense he joined the show. From whats left i keep going back and forth between Soler and JD, JD has power and contact but he is at the age were at anytime his production could fall off a cliff. Soler is the highest ceiling and lowest floor Dh bat. He has power for days but goes from good year, to bad, to great I feel alot of that is not having protection in a lineup and when there are only 1 or 2 hitter to worry about they get nothing to hit, theres much more protection in the jays lineup. If they are going 1 year then JD at 18M, if its Soler i bet the jays give him either 3/54 or 4/64. Likly the 4 year deal as most of the time the jays have to pony up in years or AAV
TheRickestRick
Won’t argue with anything you’ve said particularly Mr. Murphy
But I keep seeing everyone talk about JD or Solar possibly of coming to TO, but no love for Belt to return. Why is that?
I would rather have Belt myself then any of these other guy (except maybe JD)
Murphy NFLD
Belt played great and was 1 of the jays best hitters overall. But with bringing in IKF and then bringing back KK, to bring back belt then to the team is making too many lateral moves. Not only that but they are on track to bring back a slightly worse team then the team thats offence was 16th in RBI and HR, 11th in OPS and had a WRC+ of 107. At least with bringing in JD or Soler it’s a completely different look, more power and neither will be platooned like belt was and have around 400ish PA like belt. That’s without Chapman, who I don’t want back as they have 2-3 nice 3B prospects who I want to be given the runway to win 3b in ST. But if every move this team makes is lateral or THE SAME as last year they are screwed. With 2 everyday LHH OFs already they really need a platoon OF who hammers LHP which also was an area they could improve on but that may be 1 of the things that was just how the year shook out and should improve with RHHs like vlad, bo, Springer, Schneider and Jansen. Jansen should be resigned IMO he is a power hitting catcher that is good at almost all things catching, average throwing out guys and has an above average bat at catcher, so near elite at catcher
Murphy NFLD
The bat is near elite at catcher. People will say he is injured too much but his injuries are all catcher or getting plunked on the hands related. Hand, finger, hamstring type stuff not surgery type injuries. Sure he’s only averaged 76 games and 250 PAs but he’s hit 13, 10 and 15 HRs and had OPS+ of 105, 142 and 115 in those 3 seasons.
nasrd
Great hitter. Problem isn’t the home runs it’s being absent from the roster with injuries constantly. Then the team needs to call up a grizzled veteran getting paid to be in AAA or make a trade……again.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
The designated hitter,
A tie equals a runner at second
A starting pitcher can only go 5 innings
Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?
runningwithnailclippers
Pretty sure DiMaggio is worm food.
James Midway
I was never a fan of watching pitchers hit or watching them walk the 8 hitter with a runner on second to get to the pitcher. I don’t miss that at all.
astros_fan_84
Also, many of the guys on this list would be retiring. The universal DH created 15 jobs for aging sluggers who can’t play defense. I’d much rather watch an aging star.
LordTeaboBaggins
Watching pitchers try to hit us one of the most fun things about baseball though
astros_fan_84
If you want comedy, there are plenty of stand up specials on Netflix. And besides, there are plenty of mediocre hitters for you to laugh at.
tiger9
Don’t forget inter league play. Done solely for New York…LA and Chicago. MLB has pissed all over old rivalries like the Tigers and Blue Jays for one.
GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
@tiger9 – I agree with this. I hate the balanced schedule and could go without interleague play. The balanced schedule definitely benefited my team, the Rays, last year, but I’d much rather see them match up with the AL East more than having to endure watching them play the Nationals, Pirates, and Rockies (even if it does lead to more easy W’s). Plus, who wouldn’t want to see the Astros and Rangers match up for a couple more series last year? Nothing better than watching good teams that hate each other play.
astros_fan_84
Attendance goes up with interleague play. It’s literally good business.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I believe Morel will be DH for Cubs. Too bad Morel is such a disaster at 3B, Soler would be nice at DH. Add Belli at CF or occasional 1B, since neither Busch or Tauchman are sure things. PCA’s bat is not ready so happy to give Belli a deal with lots of opt-outs if that’s what it takes.
Old York
If you just taught the pitchers how to swing a bat, you wouldn’t need a DH.
But, if we are allowed to have a DH for a pitcher to just pitch, why can’t we have a DH for fielders so they can just field? If a pitcher gets a DH, all the other players should get a DH. Getting tired of watching guys hi .240. Get an actual hitter in the lineup!
HalosHeavenJJ
I’d like Turner or Soler. Someone who can passably wear a glove so Trout can DH twice a week.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Have to believe Angels will have one big signing within 30 days.
I think it will be Snell. But otherwise Monty or Belli.
I think Cooper is a better felder than Soler. Justin Turner was a better fielder that those two many years back but not anymore.
cdouglas24000
I know we got France at 1b but we literally have NO ONE ready to assume his spot if he falters. CJ cron looks like a a solid addition that we can pick up for 8.5 mil on a 1 year deal. Could move france to 3b, Rojas/urias at 2b, cron at 1b. Tyler Locklear the M’s prospect is still a year away so why fight if we can get cron for cheap??
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Based on Cron’s road stats the past couple years, one year at $8.5 million might be enough
Bookbook
The Mariners can play Raley, Rojas, or Canzone at 1b, in addition to Locklear if he proves ready on an excellerated timeline. Given that Moore and Bliss and Haggerty can play 2b, and there are a plethora of potential part-time outfielders (Marlowe, DeLoach, Trammell, Packard, Clase), it wont be hard to cover other positions when Rojas or the outfielders go to first if France falters.
Mrski
Mets season went to crap last season because they didn’t have a dh. Now they continue to sit and do nothing. 1986 was a long time ago.
Bill M
Yeah getting a DH should have been the priority. I was hoping for Turner or Martinez last season. Would have been a very different year with one of those guys in the DH spot
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Brandon Belt is more of a backup than a DH. Even as a DH, he will find ways to injure himself to stay off the field.
YEP
Sounds like Eloy Jimenez
shanespencer
Luke Voit will be better than all of the above!
LambchoP
Wouldn’t mind the twins giving Turner d try.
LordD99
Ford hit .187/.315/.336 over the final two months. He’s not an option.
Dtownwarrior78
As a Tigers fan, I’d like to see us sign a DH like Soler but it would take ABs away from Carpenter, Canha and other internal DH’s. Am very excited to see what Malloy, Keith and Jung can do if given an opportunity this season but figure atleast 2 of them will spend the majority in AAA. But we have offensive holes in the IF but pitching will keep us in most games. But we are going to be an exciting young squad in watch in the very near future!
gotigers68
I think we lose a few 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3, games….
