12:37pm: The Astros approached the Twins about the possibility, Chandler Rome and Dan Hayes of The Athletic report. Astros owner Jim Crane has “remained a fan” of Correa since his departure, they note, adding that the Twins believe Houston is perhaps the only destination to which Correa would green-light a trade. Nightengale adds that Correa indeed would be open to returning to Houston and playing third base there. That said, Hayes and Rome echo Passan in writing that the two sides are far apart and a deal is not at all close.
12:07pm: The Twins and Astros have indeed talked about the possibility of a Correa trade but aren’t close to an agreement, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.
9:52am: As the Astros seek help in the infield following injuries to Isaac Paredes and Jeremy Pena, they’ve looked into the possibility of bringing Carlos Correa back to Houston, as first reported by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that the two parties have had discussions on the possibility. MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart adds that Houston’s interest “is real.” Nightengale adds that Houston remains interested in Eugenio Suárez as well and has at least weighed the possibility of another run at Nolan Arenado.
The Correa scenario presents a fascinating, if unexpected wrinkle to this summer’s deadline market. In the offseason, Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey downplayed the possibility of trading his shortstop, and Correa himself voiced an affinity for Minnesota when asked about his no-trade clause at the time.
It’s fair to wonder whether either party’s stance has changed. The Twins have struggled through a sub-.500 four months of baseball and have minimal hope of reaching the postseason. The Pohlad family is exploring a sale of the team, and while that was true over the winter as well, the former front-runner to purchase the Twins, Justin Ishbia, has since instead reached a long-term agreement to become the majority stakeholder in the White Sox (where he was already a minority owner). On Correa’s end of things, returning to his original organization and jumping back into a playoff race would presumably be appealing.
Correa is still owed significant money. He signed a six-year, $200MM deal with four vesting options prior to the 2023 season. He’ll make a combined $92MM from 2026-28 and also still has about $11.6MM of this year’s salary yet to be paid out. The Twins would almost certainly have to pay down a portion of the contract to make a deal work.
Even if Minnesota did so, however, adding Correa back to the roster in Houston would send the Astros soaring past the luxury tax threshold. They’re currently about $4.5MM shy of that barrier, per RosterResource. Owner Jim Crane was steadfastly against exceeding the tax threshold in the offseason — at least in most scenarios. His lone exception, it seemed, would have been for a reunion with Alex Bregman. Whether Crane is feeling more urgency due to Houston’s litany of injuries or simply harbors some sentimentality for another former Astros star, one has to imagine he’s grown more comfortable crossing the tax threshold.
That Correa is in the midst of a sub-par season only further muddies the water. The 30-year-old hit brilliantly for the Twins last year in an injury-shortened campaign, batting .310/.388/.517 with his typical brand of strong defense at shortstop. He’s rebounded from a poor start in 2025 to an extent, but Correa’s .267/.319/.386 slash is slightly under league average (97 wRC+). Over his past 274 plate appearances, Correa is hitting .300 with a .350 on-base percentage but just a .423 slugging percentage. His power is down substantially this season, in part because his ground-ball rate has spiked to a 48.5% — its highest level in five years.
A renewed run at Arenado would register as something of a surprise. Arenado invoked his no-trade clause to nix a trade to Houston over the winter. Now that the Astros are in first place, he’d likely be more open to a move there. However, he’s in the midst of a third straight down year at the plate and is still owed substantial money.
Arenado, 34, is hitting a career-worst .235/.295/.367 in 390 plate appearances. By measure of wRC+, he’s been 16% worse than average at the plate. He remains a strong defensive third baseman but no longer draws top-of-the-scale grades from defensive metrics. He’s earning $32MM this year, $27MM next year and $15MM in 2027. It’s a steep price to pay for a former All-Star whose bat is has been on the downswing for several years now. The Cardinals would need to eat a major portion of the contract, but there’s still enough left on the deal that Arenado, too, would surely put Houston over the luxury threshold.
Suárez, owed $4.8MM for the remainder of the season, might not quite put the Astros over that edge, though the Diamondbacks could always include some cash to coax a more favorable return. The bidding on the 34-year-old slugger will be fierce, however, and Houston’s farm system is not as well regarded as some of the other teams who’ll be vying for Suárez and his 36 home runs. The Mariners, Cubs, Tigers, Phillies and Reds are among the teams also pursuing him.
Paredes could miss the remainder of the season — Nightengale notes that surgery is a consideration — but he’s controlled for an additional two years. Pena is on the mend from fractured ribs but is also controlled through 2027. Given the Astros’ multiple years of control over the left side of their infield, Suárez represents a cleaner fit than either Correa or Arenado. Paredes could slide over to second base in subsequent seasons if the Astros wind up with a new infielder who’s signed beyond the current season, but he’s played the vast majority of his career at third base.
Correa’s name hasn’t come up until this point, but the Twins are expected to be active sellers over the next two days. Righty Chris Paddack was already moved to the Tigers, and rental players like Willi Castro, Harrison Bader and Danny Coulombe are all expected to change hands as well. The more interesting element is whether the Twins will cave and trade anyone controlled longer-term. Relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax have been two of the most sought-after names on the bullpen market, and any contending team would love to add righty Joe Ryan to its rotation. All three are controlled through 2027, however. Add in the new possibility of a Correa deal, and there’s plenty for the Minnesota front office to do over the next day and a half.
What will they do with pena when he comes back if they get Correa
One can play 2B or 3B. Or the more likely option to slot one in on the IL
I’m skeptical of this.
– First, it’s Nightengale. He does not always get rock solid intel.
– Second, it’s a ton of money neither side wants to pay.
– Third, this may only being floated to deflect interest in someone else they have not secured. “we have other options, ya know…”
Buck – This is Correa’s second awful season in the past 3 years, he’d probably love to return to Houston and the Twins are probably willing to eat much of the contract to get rid of him.
Maybe that’s why both Bregman and Correa are scratched from today’s game, they could be planning on being teammates again in Houston.
“…and the Twins are probably willing to eat much of the contract to get rid of him.”
Hah. Not bloody likely.
This IS the Twins we’re talking about.
That’s $92 million over 2026-27-28. Wow.
The Twins might be better off waiting for the eventual injury and collecting the insurance instead.
If only what you said can be true!
Have to assume CC moves to third.
CC to 3B. Remember he agreed to the NYM contract to play 3B.
The real question is what would happen to Paredes in the offseason. Maybe the team will just assume that one of CC and Alvarez will be injured at any given time.
Paredes 2B next season. Altuve LF and DH
It’s a dilemma for the Astros if they get Correa back, would they move their former franchise building block to 3rd in deference to a younger guy?
CC would be coming and waiving his NTC knowing he’s the 3B. CC and Jeremy Pena are close friends.
Sounds like a match made in heaven. I can just hear those bangin’ trash cans in the background.
Cool comment
By cool, he means pathetic.
The article says Pena will go back to SS, Correa will play 3rd, and Paderas will slot in at 2nd. Altuve would go back to LF or DH.
You are among the minority by reading the story. Most just comment on the comments.
relegate him to banging on the trashcans
If the Twins can get someone to bite on Correa they should do it almost no matter what the terms are. He’s been good in spurts, but a small budget team can’t spend that much money on a guy who is only good in spurts
but can they afford to pay (hypothetically) 2/3rds of that deal for him to play elsewhere and have nothing to show for it?
To use your hypothetical: that’s 1/3 of the money freed up where otherwise it wouldn’t be, plus whatever ok-level prospect they get back. Correa is a sunk cost at this point, they need to squeeze whatever value they can out of the situation
Twins shouldn’t have their entire payroll spent on an aging shortstop, but I don’t know if it’s possible to get a deal done with that contract
That’s the interesting part. Minnesota as a small-ish market team can still compete while eating a chunk of Correas salary. If they get it down to 20M/year, trade a couple of Jax, Bader, Duran, Castro and return young pitching, that’s still an impressive lineup. Buxton, Keaschell, Lee, Larnach, Lewis, Julien is a solid core to add Emmanuel Rodriguez and Walker Jenkins to. In a division where lots of teams have a similar financial profile too.
Not to mention that Culpepper is looking really good in AA and might be banging on the door to play SS this time next season
Harry Ford/Logan Evans as the main course in a deal for Duran or Jax and Castro seems like it would fit both teams well. Ford would be catcher of the future. Evans is 5+ years of rotational depth the Twins don’t have. Would have to be some other pieces to tidy the deal up for sure.
Oh hell no.
I think Correa would welcome a Houston return. Have MIN continue paying his salary for this season and take on the rest of the contract going forward. MIN could use the savings to retool their roster for 2026.
I wouldn’t be against this.
-twins fan
Correa would like to hear some distinct banging so it motivates him to hit more home runs
I think the Astros would become more hated than the dodgers if they also get springer or bregman back
@ angt222 3/92 is what CC would at least be owned (not counting the vesting options) and he is not worth that in the open market. Twins would have to cover a significant portion for the Astros to be interested, and the vesting options make this even more complicated. Seems like a similar trade such as Stanton to NYY, so if this happens, it seems more likely to happen in the off-season.
Of course Correa is having a sub-par season. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be available and the Twins would likely still be in the race and not selling at all. That is what you really have to take into perspective. The ONLY reason that these players are available right now is because of either a disappointing performance from the player or the team. The thing about acquiring a disappointing player is that you are convinced that they can turn it around. It can happen. Hot streaks and slumps happen all the time.
And Correa has bounced back from all his poor seasons so far
This is crazy. Could not afford him 3 years ago. Couldn’t pay Tucker for the future but now going to pay Correa for next 3 years? It shows you writers are just making stuff up to get clicks, yes I fell for it.
Nightingale and Heyman are bad for that.
Exactly. This is click bait and it continually concerns me that fake news is becoming the expected norm.
Is fake news becoming the norm or is believing stuff you don’t like is fake news becoming the norm ?
The former.
The former is easier to believe.
Ha ha. No it’s not. The latter is !
Couldn’t afford him? This is a wild take considering Correa got much less than he wanted and actually signed for an amount rather close to what the Astros offered him.
Even more baffling is nobody said they couldn’t afford Tucker’s 40M/year. It was always been about the 10-12 years. Even more wild is the fact that the Astros clearly won that trade. And Tucker is still a FA at the end of the year. If they change their mind and want to get into a bidding war, they still can.
please make it happen
Correa has always bounced back from his course seasons with a really good season afterwards. I believe he can do the same next year. As a twins fan I wouldn’t be interested unless Houston covers 70% minimum.
Should read “poor seasons”
Not sure what happened there
Send him packing in a trashcan, please.
Only if they include ryan.
I don’t see it happening by the deadline, but this deadline is shaping up to be wacky.
Pass on Correa, they already have big injury issues, and he’s not any beacon of durability. Suarez or bust for the Astros.
Willi Castro
This could be fun
I love Carlos but on the surface of it, this just doesn’t make much sense. Let’s say we acquire him. He plays third this year and then Isaac plays 2nd next season, where he hasn’t played much and would hurt us defensively. This is a team that prides itself on its defense and not having bloated contracts on its payroll. Getting Correa back would be against both of those principles. Correa is also hurt a lot (which means he’d fit right in this year considering our list of players on the IL) and he’s due about 100 million over the next three seasons. We are getting a lot of money off the books after this year. Do we want to spend it on an infielder who has seen his best days and is vastly overpaid just for nostalgia’s sake? Not me. I know we’ll never do it but I’d rather spend that money on Framber, a guy is never hurt and is still in his prime. Yes, I know he’s older than Correa but he’s playing better. Spend it on Jeremy Pena, Hunter Brown or Cam Smith. Guys like that. Don’t spend it on Correa. We made a smart move letting him walk in 2022, don’t make a stupid one now and bring him back. The Twins made that bed, let them lie in it.
His fielding has gone down a lot in the last 3 years. He’s now below average at short. DRS -11 and OAA -2 this year. That’s a lot of money for a shortstop starting to show his age. I don’t know why Houston would do this.
Couldn’t agree more. This is a team known for its smart decision making with contracts and player evals. Yes there are Jose Abreus, every team has those but Carlos is far more expensive than Abreu. We made a fair contract offer to Carlos; he passed on it and we moved on. Same with Bregman. Red Sox probably overpaid a bit there. It just doesn’t make sense to me why we would do this unless it’s a situation like another person said. It’s a “well we have other options” ploy to get a Suarez or some other infielder.
Pena and Meyers
for
Correa and Keaschell
Astros take on Correa’s salary, Twins get two seasons of Pena at ARB2 and ARB3. With the money they save at SS, Twins can sign a front line starter to pair with Ryan and Lopez.
Keaschell is the cost for the Twins. Might be too much to give up but with Jenkins as a top propsect and with the way Gabriel Gonzalez has hit this season in MiLB, the Twins might part with Keaschell who could help the Astros this season if he returns from his broken arm.
Essentially, this is Correa for Pena because Meyers is actually a really good defensive outfielder who can hit a little and the sample size on Keaschell is far too small to make an educated guess on what he’d be. Maybe he’s an All Star, maybe he’s just a guy pitchers don’t have a good scouting report on yet. I’ll split the difference and say he’s about what Jake Meyers is. I would say no to that trade.
Keaschell has hit throughout his collegiate and MiLB career, you get six years on control on Keaschell age 24 to age 29. Meyers is 29 and has two seasons of ARB before he is UFA.
Keaschell reminds me of a young Mike Trout, a lot of energy, has more of a Ricky Henderson approach at the plate. I think he is going to be a great player.
If Keaschell reminds you of Trout, the Twins would be fools to sell him for four years total of Meyers and Peña. I highly doubt that this kid is that good. He hit .244 for the Twins AAA team so let’s pump the brakes there. I can’t sign off on this trade hoping that Keaschell makes going to a clear downgrade from Peña to Correa worth it. He may be a fine player but is his upside over Meyers as big of a downgrade from Peña to Carlos (if that makes sense)? Like I know I’m downgrading from Peña to Correa. Am I really upgrading that much taking Keaschell over Meyers? I don’t know. It’s not a trade I would do.
This rumor has been floating around on Astros X for over a week now, with folks saying they have good sources on this – far pre-dating today’s reporting, for what that’s worth
Nice! Get the trashcan boys back together for one more championship.
Re Correa: A formerly slugging hitter who suddenly has a problem with ground balls is a HUGE blaring red alarm. Seen that way too many times. What has likely happened (unless there’s some injury we’re not aware of) is his bat his slowed down a fraction, and it’s not making it down to the ball quite enough before contact. Watch out Astros. Don’t be sentimental about this.
Oh hell no!!!!
Get your trash cans ready!
So Arenado has no trade value.
Does this end the debate that Arenado has any trade value?
Pathetic desperate move by the cheaters to bring back a fellow cheater to d*ddy
Correa’s not in the lineup today.
Left last night’s game with “lightheadedness”
As a Twins fan I say please make this happen
Correa is a shadow of who he was and at this point, he’s been a replacement level player in 2025. At almost 31 he’s trending way wrong and takes up about three times as much payroll as a small market team can afford for his performance.
As a twins fan, please make this happen. Twins get a bucket of bubble gum per year left on his contract, Astros get Correa
Ah, this will work for booing consolidation
With Buxton going on the IL (yet again), Twins will probably need to keep one of Bader or Castro.
I can see this happening. Not the first time Astros have been in a playoff race and looked to get back players they had from championship teams
The Astros already have a plethora of players who are really, really good at getting injured. They don’t need another one.
His personal trash can is waiting for him.
How odd. He’s injury prone. He’s also not worth the money remaining unless Min eats half. But then again if that takes them out of the Suarez market among others, you go Hou.
Correa at his price? OMG. Not unless the Twins pickup any of that. If MN can get Houston to take on that contract its a total miracle. They will be dancing in the front office if they can pull that off.
If the Twins don’t take whatever money and prospects Houston is willing to offer and run, it is organizational malpractice
Cheapo pohlads about to ship Walker Jenkins with Correa just to get HOU to pay the entire freight.
Correa is a prima Donna who bailed on you. Leave him where he is Houston!
Pohlads about to package Walker Jenkins w. Correa just so they dont have to eat any of the contract.
Baseball.
Where the small market teams have to give all of their good players to the big market teams and sometimes even pay the good players they no longer have…
Getting the bang back together!
Oops I meant band.
I have seen a lot out there mentioned for the Astros
Dylan Cease
Eugenio Suarez
Charlie Morton
Willi Castro
Nolan Arenado
Carlos Correa
Cedric Mullins
Brandon Lowe
Jake McCarthy
I have heard of ones that could be trade bait. Shay Whitcomb and Chas McCormick. Of anyone else not sure. If got Correa he would play third. As Paredes is out for season most likely. All the talk is leaning towards it.
Next season could be moved to 2nd maybe.
SS would go back to Jeremy when he returns. But I just do not see Carlos coming back. Not that wouldn’t want him but who knows what will be.
I just hope they make trades right. I mean getting people because they were former teammates and we won last WS with etc. Or 2017 etc. We already got Neris again but he stinks.
If I’m Falvey salary relief plus 1991 Fleer Luis Gonzalez and Andujar Cedeno cards gets it done
Imo, it’s a big win for the Twins if they ship Correa back to Houston. If the Jays send Springer back and Bregman from the Sox, it would be just like old times, only this time there would be more boos when they’re on the road.
