Phillies Interested In Eugenio Suarez

By Mark Polishuk | July 26, 2025 at 1:24pm CDT

The Phillies have had some talks with the Diamondbacks about third baseman Eugenio Suarez, according to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  It isn’t clear whether or not the discussions are anything more than due diligence on the Phillies’ part, but Philadelphia can now be added to a lengthy list of teams with some degree of interest in the slugger.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman raised Suarez as a “potential fit” for the Phils yesterday, since the club is in need of third base help with Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list.  Putting Suarez in between the powerful left-handed hitting duo of Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber would only add more balance and pop to the lineup, and make it even harder for opposing pitchers and managers to navigate through what is already a dangerous Philadelphia lineup.

Since Bohm is expected back from his fractured rib roughly halfway through August, however, Lauber notes that adding Suarez would create a bit of a positional logjam.  Harper and Schwarber have the first base and DH spots locked down, so there would be nowhere for Bohm and Suarez to both play unless Schwarber was moved into left field.  Harper doesn’t appear to be a candidate for a return to outfield work, as Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated last month.

Speculatively, the Phillies could clear space by trading Bohm himself, though such a deal would naturally be trickier since Bohm is on the IL.  It is possible Bohm could head to Arizona as part of a Suarez trade package, as adding Bohm would help the D’Backs fill some at-bats at first base since Josh Naylor has been traded, and Bohm could provide cover at third base if Jordan Lawlar runs into more struggles at the MLB level.  Bohm is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter, so this extra year of team control might appeal to the Diamondbacks or other teams looking for corner infield help.

Since the Diamondbacks are also shopping several of their outfielders, it is possible the two sides could work out a multi-player deal that would see the Phillies add both Suarez and some outfield help in one fell swoop.  Lauber writes that Arizona was scouting Mick Abel’s most recent Triple-A start, which again could be due diligence or a signal that the D’Backs (known to be pursuing pitching) have a particular interest in Abel as a trade chip.

Dombrowski is no stranger to bold trades, so the Phillies can’t be entirely ruled out for Suarez until the dust settles.  Money won’t be a factor, as the Phils have already shown they’re more than willing to break the bank in pursuit of a championship.  Suarez is still owed roughly $5.2MM of his $15MM salary for the 2025 season before he heads into free agency.  Since the Phillies are already over the highest level ($301MM) of luxury tax penalization, they’ll pay a 110% tax on every dollar spent beyond the $301MM threshold, so Suarez’s real price tag for the Phillies will be more than $10.5MM.

Just trade Bohm for Suarez and maybe throw in a prospect plus throw in a shovel full of dirt for the Braves!

Suarez costs more and his contract is over this year so he’s only a rental. If they resign him that will put their payroll way over the limit.

The Snakes will get a much better offer than Bohm + a prospect. Geno is the most wanted bat this year and someone is probably gonna overpay to get him.

Bohm is a reasonable return for Suarez—basically turn 2 months of a good player into a year-plus of a core performer. I’m not sure that’s what they’ll want, but it does fit their window (if they think they can find enough pitching to contend next year).

With the huge asking price, the Reds should attempt to sign Suarez after the season when he becomes a FA. What is being asked for 2 months of service ridiculous. The Reds are marginal on the playoffs for this season anyway. What will be asked in off season may be out of reach as well.

would LOVE to see Suarez slotted between Schwarber and Harper especially at CBP. It might be okay putting Kyle back into LF, it’s not like he’s horrible out there, granted I know it’s not always the prettiest. It would also allow the Phillies to keep Kepler from playing just about every day

Kyle should never go back into the outfield again, he’s worse than castellanos right now and castellanos is regarded as the worst defender of all time

Harper back in right field makes more sense because his defense isnt schwarber levels of bad

Bryce has said he would eagerly move to the outfield if it helps the team. Put Suarez at third base. Bohm at first base and Bryce in Leftfield. Bohm won’t be here next year, so Bryce can move back to first for 2026. A move like this would make the Phillies front runners to get to the World Series assuming they also get a good bullpen piece

There is far less injury risk for a starter’s arm going to the pen. You just don’t use them on back – to – back days.

Don’t forget Gage Wood. Three big arms to juggle around Robertson.

Mets fan here, I doubt very much that Suarez is moved prior to Monday. I do think the Phillies are among the most likely teams to acquire him with the Yankees having filled their 3rd base void. Lots of GMs are giving their team the weekend to see if they should be buyers or sellers, or in the case of some teams should they sell a little or have a fire sale. Monday the landscape will be much more clear and the overall pool of players available will be larger and that’s when prices will really be determined. You don’t want to be the team that meets a crazy asking price on Saturday for Suarez just for say the Guardians to make Jose Ramirez available on Monday in example.

According to the latest AZ sports radio station news they are still saying Mariners, Cubs, Reds are the teams that have made the D’Backs real interested in what they are offering, but the other eight have kicked the tires on a Suarez deal.

Other than the homeruns I don’t see it as a significant upgrade. Fielding is fairly close and Saurez has only cracked 100rbis 2 or 3 times and is on the downward slope (in a baseball sense) to father time.

Sure it’s an upgrade but not significant enough to warrant everything they would have to give up to get him

The past 365 days, Bohm has hit 12 HRs with 68 RBIs and an OPS+ of 95. Over the same time period, Suarez has hit 54 bombs with 137 RBIs and an OPS+ of 154. Bohm’s clubhouse presence and glovework must be unmatched in modern baseball history.

I’m in agreement with Midinfiellifer. Trading Bohm for Suarez isn’t worth it for just a rental. Suarez wouldn’t be re-signed at the end of the year. The Phillies have no other 3B player in the minors ready to bring up next year. So, making this trade would be a bad move. It’s just not feasible.

The only way making this trade would make sense is they trade other players, not Bohm, for Suarez… Schwarber would be the left fielder again. (Today’s game vs Yankees showed that could be possible, but comical and scary.) Bohm at 3B and Suarez as DH.

The only reason the Phillies would trade Bohm is because of his temper tantrums when making outs batting. The Phillies are known to not like that type of play and they showed that last post season.

As I noted in another post, this article is just for the writer to get clicks…. Phillies fans like to fall for rumor dreams. (I.e., Trout coming to the Phillies.)

Man, adding Suarez to that Philly lineup would be insane! It would really balance out their RHH / LHH ‘issue’ and give them a Top 3 run production offense.

Philly needs to figure out what they are going to do with Castellanos. His defense has always been dreadful, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen from him at the plate (although 2022 was really bad too). He’s swinging at sliders that end up a foot+ off the plate. He somehow has a .270 batting average but every time I watch him, he looks lost at the plate. I wonder if there is a deal out there where Philly can either trade him for another underwater contract or perhaps pay another team up to 75% of what he’s owed in order to take him off their hands. This might be the last season where Philly can make a true run at the World Series for a while, so this seems to be the most important trade deadline of Dombrowski’s career in Philly. Stack the roster and go all in on 2025. Big changes coming to the team next season and beyond.

The Phillies lack right handed power and OF. Castellanos is currently their best at both and has turned himself in to a perfectly solid defender. But you want to pay him to go away?

If Castellanos is their best RHH, then the Phillies are in real trouble this year. He currently has a -0.3 WAR on the season. Also, his defense is atrocious. He makes horrible reads on batted balls in the air and has a below average arm for a right fielder. If there’s any way Philly can move on from him, it will be a net improvement for the club. Nothing personal against Castellanos, but he doesn’t not help this team’s chances of making a deep playoff run. A .270 batting average with a .311 OBP is a major red flag too.

He’s inarguably their best OF and unless you’re calling Trea Turner a power hitter, he’s their best RH power bat.

Your analysis on his defense is just flat out incorrect. His range is limited, but his routes are very good and his arm is accurate but not very strong. Overall, an average to slightly below average defensive OF.

He was also basically the only player that hit in last year’s playoffs.

If they want to move on in the offseason that’s fine, but paying to get rid of him mid-season is idiotic to suggest, particularly with the rest of their OF being atrocious with him removed..

Sure for the big bombs but not much more. Barely over a .300 on base percentage and no glove.
No glove no love especially with what they would need to give up

You don’t trade for Suarez to win a gold glove you trade for the RH power bat the lineup is badly missing. I don’t actually think the cost will be as great as anticipated

I wouldn’t mind seeing Suarez with the Phillies, but the Dbacks definitely don’t want Bohm in return. It’s gonna have to include one of Abel or Painter imo.

They called up Brandyn Garcia today. Have Blaze play 3B til Lawlar is healthy and able. Trade Gallen, Lourdes, Kelly, call up Painter and Mena or Yilber.

Mena is injured and Yilber is having an absolutely brutal year. So they aren’t viable options. Painter has zero major league history, so he isn’t ready. The best possible starter right now is Desclafani and there really isn’t any other body to throw onto the major league roster. So trading Gallen And Kelly makes zero sense. Not happening. One of them, maybe, both no way.

The Dbacks aren’t making the playoffs. Time to give the youngsters their due time. I did say Mena OR Yilber. So what if he’s been horrible? Give him innings.

They have to get something for these guys (Gallen and Kelly). It would be a disaster class if Hazen kept these guys and ended up letting 3 players walk. They don’t need to win anymore. Hazen may say “we aren’t dealing to lose,” but they’re not dealing to win either. So just get what you can for these guys and move on to next season. Hazen does much better in the offseason dealing for guys like Suarez, Naylor, etc.

The only one of Gallen, Kelly, or Suarez who is going to fetch a comp pick is Suarez. Gallen is not going to get more than a $50M deal for the next contract. He has not been very good and is a bottom 5 SP in era. Kelly is 37 I believe and won’t get more than that either, but Suarez will easily get a 2 year $50m deal or 3 year $70m-$75m.

I could see the Dbacks Re-signing Kelly though in off season. Or they can just plan to resign him on another 1 year deal. I don’t mind them keeping him to be honest. He’s been great. That is only if that’s the plan though. If they have no interest in bringing him back next season, then deal him.

Then so be it. Dbacks are in a leverage situation that they can get a comp pick for him. So they don’t need to give in to lower offers.

    Attn. Phillies fans,

The top 2 teams trying to get Suarez are the Cubs and the Brewers. Both of them really want /need a 3b and more importantly neither wants the other team to get him. They are intense divisional rivals, battling for 1st place. So don’t think for a moment that Suarez will come cheap. If you want him, put on your big boy pants, and come with a reasonable. i.e. over pay offer, that can top both the Brewers’ offer and the Cubs’ offer. Otherwise, stop salivating about what Suarez will look like sandwiched between Harper and Schwarber in your lineup, because odds are, you are not getting Suarez.

      @scottaz,

You can say the same snotty “big boy pants” stuff about the Cubs and Brewers. At this point, several teams have a chance to sign Suarez. There are no “top two teams.”

        El Kabong,

Don’t you find it at least a little amusing that Phillies fans salivate about putting Suarez between Harper and Schwarber and in the next breath say, give the Dbacks Bohm straight up for Suarez?

Salivating is a stretch. He’s a 1 yr rental who it’s true would help, but not worth the phils selling out for him. The Phillies need a outfield bat with lots of pop, right handed and a 1,2,3, see you later closer. Enjoy your long winter of winter ball in Arizona.

@scottaz – If Philly truly wants Suarez, they have the advantage over the Cubs & Brewers because of their POBO. Dave Dombrowski has never shied away from dealing top prospects in order to improve his teams at the deadline, regardless if it is considered an overpay by the ‘experts’. The Brewers and Cubs have not shown the same willingness to do so in the past. So if all 3 teams value Suarez the same, I’d give the advantage to Philly in this situation. With that said, I’d say Philly needs Suarez the least out of these 3 teams, so long as Bohm comes back soon and his injury is something that won’t limit him for the rest of this season. It’s going to be interesting to watch this play out for sure. Arizona should receive a haul for Suarez along with strong returns for their starting pitchers and OF excess too. Arizona can reset their roster for 2026 and beyond at this trade deadline if they choose to do so. They just need to do better than the return they received for Naylor. That was disappointing to say the least.

scottaz, You are correct in your post with the Cubs and Brewers really want and need a 3B, intense divisional rivals, battling for first place and Suarez won’t come cheap.

But the part about Philly put your big boy pants on and come with a reasonable over the top offer. That is as far off as the Rockies winning the World Series this year.

      A) Middelton’s big market Stupid Money “I want my bleeping trophy back” mindset would outdo any offer the smaller market cheap Cubs and Brewers would be willing to pay.
      B) But you can relax, for I don’t believe the Phillies are truly in for Suarez. This article is written more for clicks by throwing the Phillies in the article. If anything, throwing the Phillies into the article is only making the Diamondbacks richer in their return haul from the Cubs and Brewers suckering them into giving more than needed.
      C) So, pay up suckers.

I believe that is the backup plan, what I heard on AZ sports radio yesterday, if Hazen does not get what he wants then Suarez becomes a FA and the D’Backs get that extra pick. They will offer him a 2 year plus team option to resign.

    D’Backs get Alcantara (SP)

Remember Hazen did say he wanted to both buy and sell.

    1) The Phils have no intention of trading Bohm. His fracture will heal, and he will return shortly and continue being one of the Phils’ most consistent players. They already have Sosa and Kemp to fill in until Bohm returns.

    2) Suarez would be an interesting acquisition for the Phils if they could play him at first and take Harper up on his offer to return to the outfield, or move Turner to center field and make room for Suarez somewhere on the infield. Even though he becomes a free agent after 2025, acquiring Suarez could give the Phils some power hitting insurance in the very possible event Schwarber goes to another team after this season. Suarez is making $15 million this year, and would probably be less expensive than Schwarber to resign after this season..

    3) If the Phils do try to acquire Suarez from Arizona, they should try to include centerfielder Jake McCarthy in the trade. McCarthy is having an off-year and may not help the Phils this season, but sending him to AAA Lehigh Valley, which is just a few turnpike exits from his hometown of Scranton, might awaken McCarthy’s bat and make him a valuable piece going forward.

    4) Suarez is another strike out king. So, despite his home run potential, the Phils may be better off adding another contact hitter, like Crawford or Kwan, to their lineup. A blockbuster trade with Cleveland for Clase and Kwan would solve a lot of problems for the Phils.

    5) The Phils acquiring Hicklen who has only 2 major league hits since 2022 – both this season, and sending him to AAA, could signal the Phils planning to unload a few major league outfielders before the trade deadline, and possibly promoting Crawford who makes a lot more sense than most of the outfield acquisitions that have been proposed for the Phils

    6) The Phils signed Robertson who the Mets were also pursuing. The Mets are currently trying to trade from a surplus of young infielders in exchange for relievers. Trading Robertson to the Mets for Luisangel Acuna would be a smart move because of Robertson not having pitched since last season and Acuna’s potential and pedigree. The Phils would then be free to add a legitimate closer who might help more than Robertson. The Mets just acquired former Phils reliever Sosa from Baltimore, but are still looking for additional bullpen help.

But everyone knows that such a rule is in place because the league can’t get a salary cap past the players union, so the only reason it’s in place is for a deterrent to big spending teams. You don’t see any of team outside of that same handful incurring the luxury tax penalties. It’s the closest thing to a salary cap the union could not prevent, which is an attempt to create the parity or “sport” I think he may be referring to

In all it really looks like Hazen has his priorities for this deadline as MLB ready pitching, not hitters, just young controllable pitching prospects that can stick on the 2026 MLB roster. Starter or relievers LH or RH this GM is looking forward and pass the rest of this season, he already is getting prepared for 2026 and 2027. As far as Lawler is concerned, he has two problems right now, can he stay healthy to help a ML team, and can he hit a MLB breaking ball, so far, the judgement is an empathic no on both counts. Might have to put him in a deal if it will get you a few good arms.

How does putting Schwarber in LF affect his hitting? He’s pretty ingrained into his routine of going back into the cages while his team is on the field. Not sure I’d want to mess with that rhythm with the way he is producing. Plus if he pulls a hammy out there, Phils are done.
