Brayan Bello Receiving Trade Interest From Rival Teams

By Mark Polishuk | December 26, 2025 at 3:29pm CDT

The Red Sox have gotten a lot of calls about right-hander Brayan Bello, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon.  The source who shared this information with Rosenthal/Sammon pushed back, however, on the idea that the Sox had “quietly shopped” Bello themselves, as one rival executive framed the situation.

On paper, it would seem odd that the Red Sox are trying to move Bello when they’ve spent most of the offseason trying to reinforce their rotation.  Bello is coming off a season that saw him post a 3.35 ERA over a career-best 166 2/3 innings, and the righty has tossed 486 games over 87 games (86 of them starts) for the Sox over the last three years.

Back in March 2024, the Red Sox showed their commitment to Bello by locking him up to a six-year, $55MM extension covering the 2024-29 seasons, and Boston holds a $21MM club option Bello for the 2030 season that includes a $1MM buyout.  Bello doesn’t even return 27 until May, so between his age and the long-term contract, it would seem like the Red Sox have a homegrown arm locked into the rotation for at least the remainder of the decade.

As Rosenthal and Sammon point out, however, it makes some sense that the Red Sox might at least be testing the waters about what they could get for Bello, given the value of controllable starting pitching.  Even if “control” in this sense reflects Bello’s extension rather than a player’s arbitration or pre-arb years, Bello’s remaining price tag of $50.5MM over the next four seasons seems like a fair price, and potentially even still a bargain.

While Bello has been solid over his four MLB seasons, it can be argued that the Red Sox were hoping for a bit more from a pitcher who posted much bigger strikeout numbers in the minors.  In the Show, Bello has only a 19.8% strikeout rate over 543 1/3 career innings, and his 17.7K% this season was the lowest of his career.  He has an unspectacular 8.3% career walk rate to go along with that lack of missed bats.

Bello has gotten good bottom-line results by limiting hard contact, and inducing a lot of grounders, with a 52.7% groundball rate for his career.  His 95.2 mph fastball has solid velocity but Bello’s sinker is his primary pitch, even if the sinker’s effectiveness hasn’t tended to vary in consistency.  Over his career, Bello’s 4.09 ERA isn’t much below his 4.26 SIERA, but that gap stretched much wider (3.35 to 4.55) in 2025.

The Red Sox entered the offseason with plenty of big league-ready or experienced arms in their organization, but there was a clear goal of raising the rotation’s ceiling with more established hurlers.  To date, Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo have been brought in via trades with the Cardinals and Pirates, respectively, and now project to be part of Boston’s 2026 rotation.  Richard Fitts and left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Clarke were dealt to St. Louis for Gray, lower-level righty Jesus Travieso was moved to Pittsburgh as part of the Oviedo trade, plus Boston sent right-hander Hunter Dobbins and two more lower-level arms to the Cardinals in a separate trade for first baseman Willson Contreras.

Whether the Red Sox are actually trying to actively trade Bello or are just listening to offers out of due diligence remains unclear, as the Rosenthal/Sammon item implies.  The truth may lie somewhere in between all of the common offseason hot stove terminology.  Still, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has said his team is open to moving controllable pitching “in order to address other areas of the roster.”

Trading Bello would be a much different animal than moving a pitcher like Fitts or Dobbins or someone else not even guaranteed of a big league job in 2026, yet in a sense, a Bello deal would be an elevated version of the raise-the-ceiling strategy.  If the front office has some misgivings over Bello’s ability to sustain his production, or he is no longer viewed as a pitcher who can reliably be counted on for a playoff rotation, the Red Sox could potentially look to deal Bello.  Speculatively, he could be dealt for a more clear-cut frontline pitcher with fewer years of control, or perhaps moved to address a need in the lineup.

Within that same notes post, Rosenthal and Sammon also write that the Red Sox remain engaged with the Cardinals about Brendan Donovan.  Boston is one of many teams linked to Donovan’s market, however, and the most recent reports suggested that the Mariners and Giants were the favorites to pry Donovan away from St. Louis.  That said, Cards president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has shown plenty of willingness to swing trades with his former Boston team, and Bloom’s time running the Sox front office overlapped with a big chunk of Bello’s career.  Speculatively, the length of Bello’s extension could make him a factor in a Cardinals rotation even after the team is through its rebuild period, even if the Cardinals are more likely to explore higher-end prospects in any Donovan trade package.

How are they cheap? Payroll for 2026 is currently at $234M after adding $80M for 2026. And they’re probably still going to sign another big bat.

The last 5 years was a rebuild. If you remove that chunk, the current ownership has always spent. and won 4 Championships, as well.

They have a budget. Stay under $284M. They can get 3 players through trade and another through FA. Instead of signing 2 Free Agents.

The route they are taking is much wiser. Because they’ve spent the last 5 years building depth in the minors for trades.

Allin – Agreed – the Red Sox are estimated to spend right up to the 2ND CBT TAX threshold of $264 million. That is not cheap. IT MEANS THE RED SOX WILL PAY TAX AND HAVE PENALTY FOR THEIR LEVEL OF SPENDING.

Sonny Gray is not cheap nor is Contreras! They are All-star players that fit their need. IMO, Schwarber and Alonso at five years are not the investment I would want to make, and they are both basically DHs, which Boston already has too many of. A deeper look at the pitchers the Red Sox traded are very good, but not the blue chip, high ceiling pitchers they have kept like Tolle, Early, Whitherspoon, Valera. The Red Sox had trade capital that needed to be used. There simply weren’t enough innings projected for all the starters at AAA and in addition to Boston.

One more infielder will need to be added to complete the offseason. Bello and Duran could be traded or Bregman could be re-signed, but either way, the Red Sox are not being cheap. If the Red Sox can get a younger, controllable player rather than paying a free agent in their 30s, the chances of a good outcome are increased.

This is the problem with fans like you bro… Prior spending impacts current spending.

That’s why they didn’t sign Alonso. That’s why they are not going 6 years for Bregman. Its really not complicated.

Y’all just love to pretend budgets don’t exist.

Simon- I have to agree with All and Reggie. They traded because the players they got were better options than many of the overpriced free agents. Alonso got too much money/years, so I don’t blame them at all for not getting him.
The arguments they are making about Bello in the article are legitimate as this may be the best time to sell on him and they could go out and get an even better pitcher through trade.
I don’t want to be closed minded as I expect that they are far from done. They could still go after Bregman or Bo.

Contreras is 33 they didn’t sign Alonso because they said he was to old yet traded for Contreras makes no sense. What does the redsox need the most a 30-100 guy. As a Yankee fan I’m kinda enjoying the way redsox ownership is now cheap wont win anything until they sell the team. Also John Henry is behind the reason for the most likely to come lockout all because he’s cheap

Who from the Red Sox said they didn’t sign Alonso because he was too old? I don’t think anyone said that. The Yankees spent about $70M more than the Red Sox last year and only won 5 more games. Are the Red Sox cheap or the Yankees not too smart?

Weei had all the reports saying they didn’t sign him because he was to old. They interviewed Lou Merloni and Rob Bradford both who are very close with the team. Also are the yankees always smart no, but they have only missed the playoffs once in the last 7 seasons while the redsox have only made it twice in those same 7 seasons

You don’t have any quotes from the Red Sox or anyone. So, I can’t tell if your claim is accurate. My guess is that the Red Sox and Alonso couldn’t agree on a deal and they didn’t think he was worth the 5 years/$155M he got whereas they they think it is acceptable to pay 2 years/$35M for Contreras with an option for a 3rd year. I only care about who wins the World Series. There are no trophies for making the playoffs. The Red Sox took a step back to rebuild their farm system. The farm system is now producing prospects for the team and to be traded to fill holes. So, it looks like the Red Sox have planned for a window of contention that is just starting. They likely saved financial flexibility for this window (people like you call that cheap) and their spending has been going up. Actually, it really doesn’t matter how much a team spends. It matters how good of a team they field as there is more than one way to configure a team.

All- My guess is that they said he was too old to give him a 5 year contract. His contract was for too much money and too many years. I assume he will transition to DH in the not so distant future. When he got more than Schwarber, I completely understood why the Sox would not sign him.

I cant believe people are saying giving $155M to a 31yo is the same as give $34M to a 34yo.

          1) Contreras is a much better value. $17.25M vs $31M. That money will be used elsewhere.
          2) Breslow covets defense in all their deals. (Bregman, Narvaez, Devers, Contreras). Alonso offers none.
          3) Contreras is already 33, and we know his bat speed, health etc. We dont know what will happen to Alonso before he’s 33. Injuries and fading talent dont only happen after someone’s 34th birthday.
          4) Red Sox are still paying $14M LESS for each of those years. Or almost HALF of Alonso’s $31M. The risk is far less

Uncle — John Henry is using those excuses to not pay for top of the market 1B because he doesn’t think it is a good allocation of the roster budget. It’s a hallmark of how Bill James values positions.

Just peaking at his 1B history, Henry won’t spend long term on 1B. We first see that with how he dumped Adrian Gonalez after signing him. We just experience it with Devers’ dump last spring. Henry prefers 1B with bargain value, some leadership qualities/energizer, and solid but not amazing offense with OBP elements. Millar, Youkilis, Napoli, Moreland are classic examples dotted with Gonzo and Ramirez.

Contreras is just the latest example of this theory in practice.

He just opted out of 40 million a year your crazy if you think he’s signing anything less than that 5yrs 34/yr you just showed. Which Alonso at that number is a better pick up. When is the last time Bregman played 100 games and dont give me that locker room guy crap thats not worth 34mil a year they needed a power bat and swung and missed its that simple.

People frame this incorrectly. They aren’t cheap but they don’t spend wisely and then they put a cap on themselves. A better front office could navigate such a cap with ease, but they mismanage it and are left to low ball players that could be the difference maker they need. The Alonso offer was embarrassing, but yet they have no problem over paying yoshida and taking on bad money for Hicks.

          1) Alonso was ridiculously overpaid and wouldve limited the rest of the winter.

Contreras (for 2/$34M or 3/$51M) is better value than Alonso (for 5 /$155M).

          2) Maybe you didnt know this. Yoshida wasnt this management team. This team values Pitching and Defense. Yoshida would never have been signed by them.

          3) Hicks came as a salary dump, the Red Sox absolutely did not want his contract. But, they had to take it to get rid of Devers contract, which is underwater or barely a breakeven. No one wants a $245M DH, with back problems, no matter how good of a hitter.

Yoshida is the only bad contract and it was done by Bloom, not Breslow.

And dont even think about bringing up Campbell’s extension. Unless, you plan on talking about Crochet’s, Anthony’s, Rafaela’s, and Bello’s extensions, as well.

So when you say value you mean cheap? I mean who would ever want a 30+ HR 100RBI guy for 31 million a year, when you get maybe 20HR and 60RBI guy. Have fun with an 80-85 win team they needed a power bat and failed also Bregman wants 40+ a year but I bet thats a good deal right.

I feel they should wait for Spring Training before dealing an OFer.
          1) Injury to one of Sox OFers or DH.
          2) Other teams will have injuries or not feel comfortable after seeing players in ST.
          ——
I”d like Sox to eat whatever it takes of Yoshida’s contract and get rid of him, freeing up DH. Then you could then rotate OFers to DH during the season. A batting order that includes Anthony, Duran and Abreu would be nice.

Reggie- I completely understand what you mean about Yoshida because he is such a defensive liability that he ties up the DH spot. On the other hand, he was really heating up toward the end of the season and if healthy may get on base at a higher percentage than the other outfielders. I think he still has value.

My hope is he is on fire in spring training and either draws interest from another team or makes himself too valuable to get rid of. My preference would be someone more like Schwarber at DH to give us 40+ home runs, but I don’t know that we will find someone like that.

Schwarber was the only 40+ hrs avail and wasnt leaving Philly without a gross overpay. Casas is our best bet.

Sure they may not be done, but would anyone be surprised if they are? They left the team unfinished last year and we were in a tough spot at first and catcher for long periods. This bullpen looks weak and right now we probably have Gonzales starting at 3rd. Not great from a luxury tax team. Story’s money is not good despite a bounce back, yoshidas obviously is not good. Sandoval was unnecessary, Hicks’ money is dumb and we’re still paying devers 2m per year. They have no direction with the moves they make.

Tang- I think they needed to see some level of success to go all in. They made some big moves Bregman, Chapman, and Crochet, along with some questionable ones Sandoval and Buehler. They did not know Casas was going to get injured and be out for the season, nor did they expect all of the drama with Devers. Catcher was definitely up in the air and the deadline moves were embarrassing.

I don’t think any of the missteps last year indicate they are not going for it this year. They have some work to do, but I am not giving up yet.

I agree that it is unlikely we ever see them overpay with a massive contract to get the top available player. I also hope they keep the reclamation projects to a minimum. I think Gray will be fine as a replacement for Gio, but he is certainly not the ace we needed.

If Bello is the lynchpin to getting a big bat, I’d trade him in a heartbeat. Meanwhile, I do think they really missed the boat with Alonso…….

Xpen, I agree on Alonso but ownership is always looking for value and thus won’t any longer get the big boys at market rate. as for BB, I don’t see him getting moved unless it’s part of the cost on a true ace.

dewey – I’d like to think they wouldn’t trade Bello unless they are in a position to acquire Peralta or Skubal.

More likely this is the result of Breslow’s continued obsession with swing & miss in the strike zone. If you noticed, every pitcher he’s traded has had uninspiring K%.

It’s a shame because Bello did take a huge step forward this year, although he tired out the final month.

Fever- I do think they are doing everything within reason to put together a competitive team. I can’t imagine Bello being traded unless they have a better pitcher lined up. I would assume either Peralta or Skubal would only happen if they can work out a longterm contract first.

Uncle – It’s hard to take their alleged desire to win seriously when EVERY free agent they’ve supposedly pursued has gone to another team or not yet signed.

To win, at some point you need to pay market price.

Actually more than market price because of their awful reputation.

Fever- I agree that the lack of action with free agents has been disappointing, but at least some of the trades have improved the team. They are still a ways away from having a truly competitive team so if they don’t make additional moves I will be very disappointed and feel misled. I don’t blame them for not topping the Alonso contract and assume they had no real hope of getting Schwarber.

What they do in the coming days and weeks is going to be very telling. I expect a free agent signing and likely at least one more trade.

There is a big difference on offense. Alonso is so much better that Contreras edge on defense won’t make up the difference. Contreras is still miles ahead of Casas to the Sox took a big step forward at 1B.

Contreras OPS last three seasons: .817
Alonso OPS last three seasons: .828

I think an .011 difference is easily made up for by better defense even at 1B. I don’t know if you think Alonso is better than he is or don’t realize how good Contreras is. Either way you are wrong.

I’m not sure all ops are created equal. Alonso hit .272 with 38 HR and Contreras hit .257 with 20 HR. I find it very difficult to believe that they are equal offensively. Also Alonso’s ops was nearly 100 points higher than Contreras’s last year anyways.

All OPS is not equal, it’s a very antiquated way to value players at this point and isn’t used by any viable forecasting system. But the primary issue with OPS has always been that it OVERvalues power. On a rate basis, Contreras has been equal to, or better than, Alonso offensively over the past 3 years.

That said, Alonso is younger, was better offensively in 2025 and most importantly has been an iron man through his career playing in almost every game – that’s the main reason his counting stats look so good.

OPS hasn’t been used by people seriously interested in statistics, or serious baseball statistical websites (like Fangraphs or Savant) in many years. It simply adds two popular stats together to make one stat which makes no sense. It over values ISO and double counts batting average. OBP is useful and SLG is useful but combining them is not. If you want a single offensive statistics to use, go with wRC+. It’s not perfect, but was created to be used the way you are using OPS.

Alonso was very good offensively in 2025, and if he continues to be that good the next five years then Baltimore will be happy with their investment, but it’s more likely he’s closer to being the player he was in 2023-2024 who, qualitatively, was worse offensively than Contreras and/or Casas.

But if you’re using quantitative stats like fWAR or bWAR then the guy who plays every game (Alsonso) will have an advantage.

Casas can be the DH in Boston when healthy and the rust is removed at AAA Worcester. Yoshida can ride the pine, sent to Worcester (the new Rusney Castillo), traded if any value exists, or DFA. Once healthy, if Casas starts to hit, his trade value will greatly increase.

Alonso had a bounce back year at the plate after two down years.

Contreras hasn’t shown any offensive decline to this point. On a rate basis 2024 was the best year (141 wRC+) of his career while in 2025 he set a career high in plate appearances while posting the highest HardHit% of his career.

MLBTR is not a heavy analytics oriented site, nor do they claim to be, but they make the effort. Look through their articles and find the ‘nearly every article’ which mention OPS. How about starting with ONE.

Forecasting, systems construction and analytics has been my career for the better part of 20 years. Buzzwords and flexing over associations aren’t going to impress me. As much fun as analytics are within MLB they aren’t nearly as intricate as those used in other industries.

If you want to be knowledgeable regarding modern methods, start with statcast/savant as it’s MLB’s best effort in advancing player evaluation methods.

Wander – Despite not catching at all this year, he still missed 27 games and had the worst offensive season since 2021 in terms of OPS, OPS+, OBP, SLG, and his BB% absolutely cratered to the lowest of his career. Hard Hit % means he’s swinging harder than ever, therefore making less contact with the highest Fly Ball % of his career. He hit only 20 homers this year, so the HH% didn’t have much impact on the power.

He is cheaper, but he’s also entering his Age 34 season.

Breslow himself finally admitted they need more homeruns because that’s what wins in the postseason. Unless they add Suarez too, they will likely not improve in the HR category with Contreras. Remember they traded a 1B/DH who hit 35 bombs this year, that’s the bar.

How bad was it this year? Red Sox were 27th in second half homeruns.

ownership knows how to build winners but their priority has become profits over winning without recognizing you can have both. Henry felt burned by the lack of return on Panda, Price, Ramirez and yes Chris Sale. Moreover, he was always a hard negotiator for older players (Tek, Papi, etc.). He no longer will risk more for possibly less and moves the Sox profits into other areas where he envisions higher returns. While the team could get lucky like in 13, winning a championship doesn’t seem the first priority any longer.

Teams are calling the Red Sox asking about Bello. It does make sense for the reasons you cite.

I see Bello kind of like Pivetta. He’s a solid 4 right now, and that’s why they need another 2 or 3. Let’s see what happens with Tolle and Early first. Sign Bregman and kick the tires on reliable 2 or 3 starters, but be willing to go into the season with this group of pitchers if you decide not to trade anyone. Find a third baseman. I don’t know.

Last two years in Boston Pivetta was striking out 30% of batters, Bello is under 20% the past two years. That’s huge when it comes to hoping to unlock another level.

Not thay Bello wouldn’t be a nice addition for numerous teams including SD.

Pitchers can have success if they don’t strike out a lot of guys. This is a shocking fact to most modern day baseball fans.

IMO Bello can benefit from a pitching philosophy change. The first he needs to focus on that sinking two seam fastball early in the count that pitch is beat into the ground. I think he should stop throwing that four seamer it gets hit hard and up in the air he was exceedingly lucky it didn’t go out of the park more often. He also needs to rediscover that changeup it was his best swing and miss pitch coming up through the minors what has happened to that pitch? He still gets more swing and miss than other pitch he has and it’s an also a ground ball pitch.

It’s like he likes to challenge the hitters like a machismo thing with that four seamer and it’s not a great pitch. I would focus on the two seam sinker mix in a few sweepers as north south and finish with that Changeup. If he needs to rediscover that chase up ask for help from Pedro who had a crazy changeup. The point is there is a lot there to like he could be a really good pitcher but he needs to focus on what he does well and sparingly use the pitches that aren’t his bread butter. He should pitch like Logan Webb off his sinker similar pitch mix but Webb uses his his Cutter and four seamer much more a sparingly and I think Bello can be a similar pitcher if he just embraces his strengths.

I’ve always said that Bello has really nasty stuff. He just needs to be taught how to pitch. I was hoping that Pedro was going to have a much bigger impact on Bello in that regard.

Take a look at pitchers sorted by K-BB%. The first page is a list of AS candidates. Bello is #110 out of 127. The list of pitchers with those stats are guys you wonder if you want on your team.

I’m not a Donovan fan, but that looks like a swap that would work.

Maybe Bello is coming up in trade talks for Ketel Marte? Trading a package headlined by Bello for Marte, and then using the Bregman $$ to bring in Suarez/Valdez/Imai would be scary for us Yankee fans tbh.

Bregman & Marte appears to be an either/or situation. They have Mayer for the last starting infield spot plus Romy as a great bench option.

POPGUN13 ….The infatuation with Abreu is just straight up nuts…. He will NEVER hit LHP enough to be an everyday player. and batting Roman Anthony 1st is fine for the first month of the season, but he needs to be in a run producing spot in the order by May

And Perales is on the Washington Nationals…. FYI

Abreu is also a gold-glove right fielder in a very difficult park to play right field. So you drop him to the 8 spot against lefties and keep his glove on the field. Just my two cents.
Plenty of playing time and talent to mix and match as needed.

This lineup can be shuffled however a Manager sees fit. What’s nice about it, is that it delivers that luxury to a Manager. Lots of versatility and ability to shake the lineup up.
Slide guys up and down as you see fit and based on who is on the opposing bump.

It would not surprise me one bit if it contains the majority of the people on this list though.

I’m in favor of putting a solid defensive lineup out there and waiting on hitters until the trade deadline and letting someone else eat that payroll, as this lineup will still score plenty of runs, play above average defense, and win a lot of games.

Popgun13: I guess you’re trading Duran for Peralta/Ryan? Don’t you think you’re going to have to add Early or Tolle to get that deal done? And who are you giving up for Donovan? And what are you doing about the $37 million owed to Yoshida? And do you think it makes sense to have Campbell — who they signed for eight years/$60 million — as a part time bench player? Shouldn’t he be starting, if not in Boston then in Worcester?

Is Bello expendable if the return is right, of course he is. I only see it happening if there is a significant return. While he may be a solid #4 as a Red Sox, he’s a low end #2 and a solid #3 for a lot of lineups in the League.

Bello and Duran would be a massive overpay for Ryan.

Duran has been one of the best OF in the league these past two years and Bello is a young, controlled SP who is a solid mid rotation arm with some upside remaining.

Duran + maybe a lottery ticket prospect or Bello and a top 20 guy should be more the enough to get Ryan, but the twins look to be holding onto him.

It’s just alignment. Twins aren’t good enough for them to win now with Duran/Bello making good money. They’d want Early or another pitching prospect as headliner with 5-6yrs of control. Win now teams would be all over Duran/Bello. 2 different audiences.

Keep in mind, the Bello report came from Ken Rosenthal. Ken, along with guys like Jon Heyman, generally feed the baseball world bits and pieces Scott Boras and other agents want in the public domain for their own benefit. Ken and Jon are always willing to cooperate with the understanding they will get signing scoops in the future.

Think this is a guy (if traded, or figured out internally) that someone will ‘fix’, I know he’s already not exactly hurting you out there, but take to the next level with either a new pitch, or heavy reliance on a current pitch in a new spot, something, just has that feel to me.

There is a difference Breslow has been trading from a position of depth and quite frankly they won’t even feel those trades from a depth position.

Right now they have Crochet, Gray, Bello, Oviedo, and I’m Guessing Early will win the fifth spot. I think Sandoval will pitch out of the pen. That leaves a AAA rotation of Crawford, Harrison, Tolle, Sandlin, and Bennett. That leaves Shane Drohan and Tyler Uberstine as more depth pieces. They also drafted Kyson Witherspoon who is probably going to start in AA Portland and is probably in Worcester by mid season as more depth. Three of the guys in AAA have big league experience and everyone besides Witherspoon is on the 40 man roster. Pitching isn’t going to be a problem for Boston.

The lineup really shapes up nicely with the addition of either Bregman or Bichette to hit out of two hole. I like Anthony, Bregman or Bichette, Duran, Contreras, Story, Abreu, Narvaez, and Rafaela. It’s a pretty good lineup and let’s not forget with a healthy Anthony especially after he really hit his stride in his last month and a half they were among the best offenses in baseball. Without him in September they fell apart they were a totally different offense and a healthy Anthony will make all the difference next year he’s that good.

They really aren’t that far from being a really good team with a very deep pitching staff and if Casas can get and stay healthy look out. One other note Masa just doesn’t fit on this roster he was a huge mistake and they need to move on from him one way or another.

BoSox will need a relatively inexpensive, innings eater like Bello throwing in the (depending on injuries) 3-4-5 spot. It’s not like the guy is 35 years old. The entire league would be happy to take him off your hands for two prospects including a slow, likely whiffy DH, a speedy player with no other discernible talent and a rebuilt, late-20’s reliever arm.
