Willson Contreras Becoming More Open To Waiving No-Trade Clause

By Steve Adams | December 2, 2025 at 10:55am CDT

Entering the offseason, two of the Cardinals’ three pricey veterans — Sonny Gray and Nolan Arenado — made clear that they were more willing to waive their no-trade clause this winter than they were last. Gray said he’d “definitely” consider the possibility after chatting with new president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom about the team’s direction. He’s already been shipped to the Red Sox. Arenado said he’d consider a broader range of teams this winter than last. He remains with St. Louis and will be extremely challenging to trade given his multiyear decline at the plate and the two expensive years left on his contract.

The Cardinals’ third spendy veteran, first baseman Willson Contreras, said on the final weekend of the season that he’d be open to trade scenarios if they made sense for both the organization and his own personal future but emphasized that his preference was to remain in St. Louis. Now, however, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports that Contreras has become increasingly open to waiving his no-trade protection to greenlight a deal if he deems the new club to be a good fit.

Perhaps seeing Gray moved and witnessing a deluge of rumors about teammates like Arenado, Brendan Donovan, Lars Nootbaar, JoJo Romero, Nolan Gorman and others has proven eye-opening for Contreras. Maybe watching the 2025 postseason simply reignited his aspirations to return to the playoffs. Whatever the reason, it’s notable that Contreras is now signaling a greater willingness to approve a deal.

That doesn’t make it a foregone conclusion that he’ll be traded. Contreras’ contract isn’t as complicated as that of Gray or Arenado, but it’s not exactly a raucous bargain in its own right. He’s guaranteed $36.5MM over the next two seasons, plus a $5MM buyout on a club option for the 2028 season. That’s $41.5MM still guaranteed to him overall. Would a 33-year-old Contreras (34 in May) command that type of contract in free agency right now? It’s possible, but he likely wouldn’t earn much beyond that.

Contreras is coming off a strong overall season. He hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs, 31 doubles, a triple, five steals, a 25.2% strikeout rate and a 7.8% walk rate. By measure of wRC+, he was 24% better than league-average at the plate. His defense at first base — his first year at the new position — drew strong marks from Statcast (6 Outs Above Average) and a roughly average grade from Defensive Runs Saved (-1). It’s not far-fetched to think his glove will improve as he gains more seasoning at his new defensive home.

The Astros signed Christian Walker for three years and $60MM last offseason, a contract that began with his age-34 season. In that sense, one could argue that Contreras’ contract is about market value from an AAV vantage point ($20.75MM AAV on the remaining guarantee) but is more appealing in that it’s a year shorter. Then again, Walker was an elite defensive first baseman who’d his 95 home runs across the three prior seasons; Contreras was a good-not-great defender in ’25 and has hit 55 home runs over the three prior seasons.

The Cards were willing to pay down around half the money remaining on Gray’s contract to get a decent return. They wouldn’t need to eat as much of the Contreras deal to move him, but the more money they absorb, the better the return they can seek. Trading him without paying down any of the remaining salary likely wouldn’t net much of a return at all.

If the Cardinals are willing to eat some of that cash, there should be no shortage of interest in the three-time All-Star. Clubs like the Red Sox (again!), Rangers, Orioles, Guardians, Mets, Marlins and Padres are lacking certainty at first base and/or designated hitter. The Cardinals appear willing to deal within the division, too, which could make Cincinnati or Pittsburgh viable on-paper fits. Could a catching-needy team go outside the box and acquire Contreras with an eye toward putting him back behind the plate? That might be a reach, but it’s a very thin market for catching both in free agency and trade this offseason.

For the Cards, the benefit of trading Contreras is straightforward. Obviously, trimming payroll ahead of a season (likely multiple seasons) where the team doesn’t expect to compete for a World Series would be preferable for ownership. Moving Contreras and including cash in the deal could also net prospect talent of some note, furthering the clear rebuilding efforts.

Trading Contreras would also open first base full-time for Alec Burleson, thereby creating more room in the outfield for players like Joshua Baez, Nathan Church and the seemingly stalled out Jordan Walker (among others). They could also continue giving Burleson some occasional reps in left field and at DH, thus opening more first base reps for Gorman, whose playing time elsewhere in the infield is going to be cut into by top prospect JJ Wetherholt. Then again, Gorman himself could be traded this winter.

Contreras is just one of many Cardinals who could find himself on the move before too long this winter. Bloom & Co. are known to be working to trade Arenado while listening to offers on Donovan, Romero, Nootbaar, Gorman and others. At this point, Contreras and Arenado are the only two Cardinals who are guaranteed any money beyond the current season.

Interesting that the Reds are mentioned. Not that they couldn’t use the bat, but interesting that someone thinks they would actually do it.

I don’t think it would be so surprising. It’s just 2 years guaranteed with a 5 million buyout for the third year. They might even be able to get the Cards to pay the buyout. And the Reds do spend from time to time.

Teams don’t spend until they do. Mariners have been competitive for the last 5 years and they didn’t fully “go for it” until this year with the Naylor signing. Reds have slipped back into the playoff conversation even though it was as a WC3. I would not be too surprised if they go medium-big on a bat to build upon that. Contreras, Polanco, Brandon Lowe, etc., are solid upgrades at that tier and won’t take huge commitments.

Allegedly the Reds were “going for it” at the deadline in 2023 and 2025 too.

Medium probably the best bet, if that. They already announced the payroll would be the same as last year.

So………………. He went from, I want to stay here forever to this ship is sinking and I need to jump off with one trade? You’ve got to admire his commitment to his thought process. Cardinals will need to eat some of that horrible deal too just to get rid of him anyway. Jeimer Candelerio 2.0. Bloom wants to build through the farm and he’s good at it. Old and useless need not stay.

I don’t have to read an article to know that contract was under water before the ink dried. I watched him play for too long. The Cubs got Jaxon Wiggins for letting him walk. One of Hoyer’s true success stories and well played.

For a backup catcher you can do a lot worse. Some teams employ backup catchers who can’t hit or catch! At least with Contreras you know he’ll slug the baseball.

Trade Contreras, I love him as a Cardinal, but we need to get younger. There are so many potential suitors for him, Padres comes to mind as a good fit. He is not overpaid, but the more the Cards eat his salary, the more they will get in return. A 128 ops+ as a Cardinal is really good. Tons of teams need to be in on him.

Why do the Cardinals keep trying to make Burleson and Walker into things they aren’t and resist playing them at 1B and 3B where they belong? Let Arenado sit and PH if he won’t waive his NTC and he’ll want to go soon enough, Problem solved.

He would be a perfect fit on the Padres but I don’t know how the money part would fit.

The cards would likely have to pay down a large portion of his contract. They probably don’t have to do that for other suitors. Perhaps they would for a better return but to what extent.

Teams should look to trade their bad contracts for better fits, requiring less subsidy if any. The Cards have three such deals.
Boston-STL has already made one deal moving a contract; there’s more.
The Cards must shed $$, add arms and make room for kids. The Sox need RH power at 1B, 3B or DH, and to shed Yoshida’s $18M.
Yoshida and Contreras both make $18M; Arenado’s $27M. Sox have many cheap available MLB-ready starters–Harrison, Dobbins, Crawford, and more. Masa + one of them saves STL $9M, makes room for kids, and gets them a DH and a starting pitcher. The Cards aren’t getting a starting pitcher for Arenado any other way.
Contreras would likely attract another of the pitchers, speedy infielder David Hamilton or OF Password, maybe more; the Cards eat no salary and get two potential regulars. Note that neither Abreu or Duran is dealt.
It’s a win-now deal for the Red Sox. With Contreras at 1B, they have plus fielders at every position, and eight position players with double-digit HR power. They’re older, but the three Cards make up the leadership loss of Bregman and Giolito. The payroll would rise to $250M+, over the lux tax. But they fill two positions with good gloves and some RH pop.
Is it enough? Maybe not, but with both STL guys, they’d be done but for a LH reliever. And, as a Sox fan, I can’t find an available 3B with a better glove than Mayer. And he’s our SECOND baseman.

Arenado isn’t tradable because he isn’t playable. Contreras can be moved because he is still pretty good. Nobody is taking Arenado even if his contract is paid down. He has become that bad.

    Trade with Rangers

    Contreras
    Arenado
    Donovan
    Pages

    For

    Jung
    Burger
    Pederson
    Fien
    Russell

Rangers get for sure upgrades at 2 positions and perhaps at 3b too. They get vets who are ready to win. Cardinals get some filler type players who have upside and prospects. Money could be included on the Cardinals end.

There are two major problems with this trade.

First, the Cardinals are looking for prospects and controllable talent, which Texas is severely lacking in. Second, including Arenado means the Rangers have to take on additional salary when they’re trying to cut payroll. If I’m an opposing GM, i wouldn’t take Arenado for even $5 million at this point.

Just a lose lose trade all around

I said the Cardinals can pay salary. And Pederson makes a lot of money too. So no the Rangers dont need to take on money you made that up.

All the players the Cardinals would get back are prospects and controllable talent except Pederson who is in the deal for salary purposes.

The placeholders aren’t really worth that much in trade. Burger is a non tender candidate. The value in the deal is from the 2 prospects. Maybe if you understood baseball you would realize that. The deal is basically Donovan for the 2 prospects. Arenado and Contreras dont actually have trade value fella

Seems unwise for the Cardinals to offload most-to-all of their tradeable assets in one trade to one team instead of spreading them out to maximize the return.

That’s on top of this just being an extremely unrealistic trade.

King- two issues. One I get you said could include money but Arenado has reach unplayable status. So even at league min the rangers may not want him. If you remove him from the deal then the rangers would make this deal but then it would make no sense for the cards.

Of course Contreras is changing his stance on waiving the NTC. The Gray trade was a necessary move that nonetheless subtracted from the rotation (at least for 2026). Every player wants to win it all and he’s 33.

Honestly, he’s a potential fit for a majority of teams. He could replace Goldschmidt at first for the Yankees. The bat would be an upgrade over Steer in Cincinnati, or Dom Smith in SF. Heck, the Phillies could even consider him as a backup plan if Schwarber leaves.

I expect this move to happen quickly now that Mozeliak isn’t in charge, avoiding reality and delaying the inevitable.

Contreras improved his framing in 2024 over what he did as a Cub, but it still wasn’t good enough for the Cardinals because they made him their full-time 1B the very next year. At this point teams are looking at him as a 1B/DH primarily. The bat is good and he’s played solid defense at first base, but he won’t be a catcher anymore unless it’s an emergency situation.

Sources? Just because the cardinals wanted to move him over the other options, doesn’t mean other clubs wouldn’t be willing to move him right back to catcher. The bat plays either way, or at least it has. Decline is going to start. But again, depending on the teams make up and needs, he could be the bat they need and catching 80 games could be what they need to do for his bat to be in the lineup.

Exactly. Teams don’t steal bases off Contreras because he has a weak arm. He once self proclaimed he had the best arm of any catcher in the game and he does have a cannon. Base stealing is not his catching weakness, it’s his game calling and that can be done by the bench or by the pitch himself.

Opening up 1B for Burleson long term is an important move for them this year. He’s a very solid hitter and obviously has no business in the outfield. If they can trade Arenado then the infield could/should be:
    1B: Burleson
    2B: Wetherholt
    SS: Winn
    3B: Donovan

Does StL really care if they send 5M a year for 3 years to CLE in order to secure a better return? I doubt it. I wonder if they would even prefer to do that.

CLE just paid a 39 yo Santana 12M a year. I’m sure they would be totally fine paying Contreras 13M a year for 2 years and have the buyout paid for by StL

Yeah if the cards did that his market would expand. Don’t think that brings back a blue chip top 50 type prospect but it could get them a back end top 100 prospect and a flyer dude. Or 3-4 guys with potential, depends really on quantity vs quality.

I do hope the team continues to move the Vets out that hold some value and let Walker/Gorman platoon at third, Burleson/Herrera split time at 1st/DH, and take a flyer on a corner outfielder with at least potential for a bit of pop. I have previously really disliked the idea of moving Arenado/$$$ considering it won’t bring much return, but I can see the value of seeing what they can make out of Gorman/Walker instead of plugging them into the keystone or out in right field. I mean if Arenado would go for it he could stay put and play 2nd if Wetherholt isn’t ready in the spring.

This is why Arenado must go. If he is on the team, Oli will play him everyday at 3B and bat him 4th or 5th. We need to get these young players reps at 3B. If they can’t play get rid of them. Walker should go to AAA until he learns to hit again.

He’s a decent player still but what realistically can they get for him? I’m not saying he doesn’t have value but other than salary relief I don’t see much of a return.

Since the Mets never seem to value Alonso, maybe they trade for Contreras at first base as his replacement.

If it is truly fire sale time in St. Louis, the Dodgers need to prioritize Donovan. They have plenty of controllable starting pitching, a real need for the Cards.

I am not understanding your question. The Dodgers have a LF vacancy. He could also cover at 3B for an aging Muncy who might well be in his last year with the team.

          Blue,

I took another look at his info. At first glance it showed him to be more of a utility guy, which the team has covered.

But apparently he plays a very good defensive left field while also having a solid bar. He would definitely be a good fit, assuming he has the right mental/emotional makeup for the team.

Definitely cheaper than a Tucker or Bellinger. And for their purposes he might be more of what they need.

Mostly prospect capital and two more years of arbitration salary. They’re going to have to promote or trade somebody soon. Landon Knack, for one. This should be his last option year.

Dodgers live players like Donavan. At the very least his a starter upgrade and second and LF.

Dodgers have plenty of young spare parts they could trade for him. My money is on him being a dodger. Next mariner.

Except the cards want to save some money. Eating part of Contreras deal is possible but eating all of it which is what it would be taking Yoshida back makes zero sense.

Here is a trade the Yankees would never do because of salaries they would take on but it fixes multiple issues.
The Yankees need a rh bat to play first and catch. Contreras can back up both
So Contreras to Yankees for AJ Escarra.
The Yankees desperately need a contact lineup approach. So moving Jazz for bullpen arms and trading for Donovan to play second, and some LF especially if Bellinger and Boris want 6 plus years.
Take a Arenado contract also in this trade and now you have a platoon at third. Send Warren, Oswald Cabrera plus prospect SS Roderick Arias and OF prospect Dillon Lewis for Donovan, Arenado, and Romero.

That’s allot of money the Yankees are taking on so moving Jazz and maybe Stanton if he waives to a contender will offset that money.

The Cardinals farm system is so bad, I’m all about trading everyone to get as many hi ceiling lottery ticket prospects back as they can. It that’s all you’ll get for Contreras. They’ll get another teams top 100 prospect for him, but not an MLB top 100. The biggest return for Contreras would come at the trade deadline if he’s having a good year. Unless they think Contreras is going to start declining going into this year, it makes zero sense to move him before the deadline. In July teams will be more willing to make the move to go over the top. Still won’t be an exciting return, but it would still he better.

Zero sense, unless it’s a pure salary dump, then it makes a lot of sense to save the $$ on the whole year. Which is exactly what Bloom is here to do, cut payroll to as close to $ as possible. Contreras for some new club house towels sounds about right. Saving money in two ways!

Uhh … have you checked the system lately? Fangraphs has it as the minor league system with the most future value. Many players with up arrows all over the board. Wetherholt, Doyle, Rodriguez, Bernal, Baez …

Checked fan graphs? No I watch the games. 2 of your 5 and 3 of the Cardinals top 6 ranked prospects are catchers. That is not a positive indicator of a strong farm system. I was high on Joshua Baez a few years ago, he doesn’t move any needles. He should be a good trade candidate now as he is probably at his peak value. I assume you mean Jesus Baez though. Have fun with that. Undersized player with big holes in his swing and pops up a ton. He’ll strike himself out of the league pretty quickly. If the Cardinals have a top farm system then the state of baseball is really bad and I don’t believe that at all. There is a lot of exciting 19-21 year old talent out there, unfortunately it’s just not at the cardinals affiliates. Not to mention, baseball is trending towards top talent being drafted and debuting within 15 months. Started accelerating with the last round of minor league contraction and will continue to do so with the next round of contraction. The minors will be for 18 year old draftees and younger latin American player signings. This isn’t 2004 anymore, things have changed Mox. Identify the true talent more quickly while keep trimming the fat. The real winner is college ball as it’s the real MiLB now.

Hilarious. You admit to not paying attention to the system but still have an opinion on it. It is possible to watch the games and follow the farm, you know. And yes, I mean Josh Baez. He is back after having a great year at High A and AA. Love that you say he doesn’t move any needles when he’s on the big league door step and has serious upward momentum, especially with a team lacking in RH OF. Also not sure how having Bernal, Rodriguez, and Crooks in the same system could ever be construed as a bad thing.

Speaking of someone stuck in 2004 …

Sorry I don’t ever use fan graphs. I use MLBs StatsAPI and create my own dashboards. Joshua Baez is ok, but again doesn’t move the needle. He has more power and good size, but has a long swing and a lot of miss. He’s their second best prospect positional prospect IMO and that’s not a good thing. Again, should trade while he’s probably at his highest value. As far as the catchers, I don’t value them at all. The Raleigh’s of the world are extremely rare and we’ll see if he can repeat. Just look at how many catchers were recently ranked in the top 10 in all of baseball and never panned out or are easily replaceable with a guy you never heard of. Bart and Rautsann are two. How about Diego Cartaya? He was untouchable by the dodgers and now is bouncing around the minors. Campusano, List goes on and on. So again, if the cardinals have 3 catchers in their top 10, that to me is a sign of a very weak farm.

Too much. Contreras is under-water, and Mayer should be, imo, our starting 3B for the next 6 years. That said, Contreras is an interesting fit for a RH 3B, and ‘maybe’ a BUC.

Underwater? I’d take on two years of his production, using him at first base and perhaps catcher, over the huge question mark that is Casas, as well as Donovan manning the three other infield positions as a super utility. Mayer is someone I hate to give up on, but his injuries can’t be argued with- he’s always hurt so far.
