Of the Mariners’ three primary position-player free agents, Josh Naylor returned to the team on a five-year, $92.5MM contract, and Jorge Polanco headed to the Mets on a two-year, $40MM deal. This leaves Eugenio Suarez on the open market, and in an interview with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said there’s “certainly a chance” Suarez could join Naylor for another stint in the Pacific Northwest.
“We love Geno. Geno brings a ton not just on the field, the things that people see…but off the field,” Hollander said. “His steady presence, great makeup, [and] what he brings to a clubhouse every day, it’s really hard to replicate. So we’ve maintained contact with Geno’s reps all winter long.”
Re-signing Naylor was known to be Seattle’s clear priority as the offseason began, with reports indicating that Polanco and Suarez (in that order) were the next items on the checklist. The fact that Naylor signed in mid-November allowed the M’s some extra flexibility in accessing the rest of the market, and talks with Polanco reportedly saw the Mariners make a two-year offer at least in the range of the Mets’ $40MM figure.
It isn’t known if the Mariners made any kind of concrete offer to Suarez to perhaps see which of Suarez or Polanco accepted first, or if the M’s held off on diving too deeply into talks with Suarez until Polanco’s fate was decided. Even with Polanco now off the market, Seattle has also been linked to such prominent trade targets as Brendan Donovan and Ketel Marte, so it could be that any substantive negotiations with Suarez are being held off until one or both of these infielders are dealt, or if talks with the Cardinals or Diamondbacks fall apart.
If Suarez did return to the Mariners, he would likely be used more as a DH than as a regular third baseman. Depending on the defensive metric of your choice, Suarez has been generally an average to below-average third baseman for several years now, and both Defensive Runs Saved (-6) and Outs Above Average (-3) weren’t impressed by his glovework in 2025. The M’s have enough good internal third base options that the team has been looking mostly at second base help, and Suarez might be pretty much the only free agent third baseman on Seattle’s radar due to his past history with the franchise.
The Cubs and Red Sox have also been linked to Suarez’s market this winter, but again, it isn’t known if either of these teams or any other suitors have put a contract on the table for the 34-year-old slugger. It has been a fairly cool market for a player coming off a 49-homer season, yet Suarez’s age, high strikeout rates, and subpar defense are red flags for any team considering a long-term commitment. It also didn’t help that Suarez’s production dipped heavily after he was dealt from the Diamondbacks to the Mariners at the trade deadline.
MLB Trade Rumors still ranked Suarez 20th on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents, and projected him to land a three-year, $63MM deal. That contract still seems possible since there’s still plenty of time left in the offseason, and the market undoubtedly has plenty of twists and turns as free agents come off the board and other players change teams on the trade market. While a hometown discount may or may not be feasible, it is fair to guess that Suarez might favor the Mariners over other teams, due to his familiarity with the clubhouse and the likelihood that Seattle will again be postseason contenders in 2026 and beyond.

I got good news , Suarez. I’m takin’ you OUT.
Pirates or Reds would be a better fit for Geno.
Pirates, Reds, Rockies, Marlins, Diamondbacks. Two to three year deal should get it done for someone.
No thanks as a reds fan, he was great here but it’s been a while and they could spend that money more wisely if they even spend anymore.
I am a Reds fan and would love to see him back as this team needs another bat. But the franchise is nothing but a clown show and will end up dumpster diving in February as normal. Guessing they are waiting to see if Austin Hays’ price will come down so they can offer him another one year deal for 60-70 games.
Stingray I’m also a long time reds fan which is why they can’t afford to do this imo, some team that spends can afford to eat the last year or so of his contract. The reds are already doing that for candy and moose before that, I was slightly on board with schwarber because he is on a different level but other than that they need to stay out of the free acency
Reds fan too – and thank you, but no thank you on Geno… Time and again, in tight late game situations with a runner on third and maybe second too and less than two outs, would badly K with his HR cut, then deny in interviews afterward that he tries to hit HRs…
So you’re saying there’s a chance…
As much as Suarez is a great clubhouse guy and a fun, enthusiastic, crowd favorite, we need to let him go! He has twice proven that he can’t hit here…… $20+ million a year or our young internal replacement? I’ll take Ben full-time on third – better fielder and hit better too!
Ben Williamson is definitely a better defender than Suarez but not a hitter, not at all. Colt Emerson is the future 3B sometime in 2026, possibly Opening Day, depending upon Spring Training results.
When has he “twice proven he can’t hit in Seattle”? His first stint here he hit 50-ish dingers over 2 years. He only hit about 12 homers here last year, but that was in the last half of the season. That means he’s good for 25 homers in a full season here. Maybe 30.
And maybe 20.
He was not good in year 2.
Geno as a Mariner last season:
.198/.288/.428 for an OPS+ of 94. Hard pass on brining him back
Geno was roughly league average in his last full season with SEA by OPS+, 15-20% above avg in the desert, and ~10% below avg after the trade back to SEA.
I wouldnt count on him being above average in SEA but we could do worse at DH. He’s not worth $20M a year though or whateverhe gets to rock a sub 700 OPS with a bunch of dingers. Everything that isnt a HR is a K.. his OBP is atrocious.
That’s way too small a sample size. Plus he was shipped to a new team and new league part way through the season. That easily could have an effect.
Go check his last 600 at bats at T-Mobile. He DOESN’T hit well there anymore.
He hit .189 in Seattle… you have to give Ben a Shot to Win that position and Mature… and he deserves it actually… Geno is a PUNCH machine and didn’t hit on the Road for US either….
The devil you know strikes out A LOT. He can only play 3B, and while he’s been okay on defense as a Mariner, it’s a problem when the SS is a year older and a step slower. This same devil has never been a FT DH, which takes the kind of skills he doesn’t have.
I feel like the Mariners should be looking into Okamoto too
Okamoto, Geno….same problem. Paired with JP, the left side D would be too weak.
“Interested In” – literally every teams favorite saying this offseason

Almost like they’re rumors or something. Wild.
He did great his first stint in Seattle.
Brewers will sign him for 2/28
Rockies 2/30
Well the pressure from the White Sox to sign him went down, with their signing today.
Yeah that park totally kills offense. No hitter should ever want to sign there.
Naylor had a 1 dotted at T Mobile last year dog
Yet Julio, Raleigh, Crawford, Naylor and Robles were happy to sign new contracts after having played there and Geno was happy to return via trade last season.
T-Mobile isn’t great for some RHHs, but it’s hyperbolic to say no hitter should ever want to sign there.
Josh Naylor?
I’d be very hesitant giving Suarez more than a 1-yr deal. He didn’t have a particular issue with T-Mobile during his first 2 years with the M’s so it may have just been a small sample last year. That being said, he’s older and recent performance counts for more in my eyes.
As much as I think that Eugenio is such a great person and teammate, NO Please. Because of both the strikeouts and the lack of range with the glove. Please Brendan Donovan or Ketel Marte. If not, be creative in getting another bat that can play OF, 3B, 2B, or DH. Really Need two bats so maybe pivot to Willy Castro, Miguel Andujar and a RH Relief Pitcher. You still have the $$. Andujar can play 3B, LF, 1B or DH and Castro can play 2B, SS and 3B. Just strengthens the bench and both put the ball in play, which Eugenio does not do consistently.
Andujar has had one good year after like 5 bad ones.
He has been injured a lot but when healthy has hit.
That’s a smart call with Castro and Andujar. I’ve been saying that for the Phillies all off season. They both provide depth and can spell any young guys they are trying to break in bc they know their role.
Any chance the Mariners want Bohm for Castillo?
That is a great question and thank you for the comment. I would personally rather have Bohm than Suarez. Castillo was good last year, very reliable, especially when Gilbert and Kirby went on the IL early in the season. The Phillies would have to take on a $25 million salary for two more years. I like it if the Mariners could then go and sign like a Chris Bassitt as their fifth starter for $8-&10 million.
Giants. Good park for him.
They have a pretty good 3B already, I hear.
In Seattle 2/25-30 makes sense to me. He’s not anything more than a .220/35/95 guy. So that clearly has it’s good and bad sides. If both sides agree he’s not Mark McGuire then why couldn’t they make it work? He’s on the downhill side and the Ms could use a power hitting stop gap player. Find a meeting point and win a WS.
If we can get Geno at 1/20 with a 1/20 team option and $5m buy out…. I’d low key be interested as an M’s fan after saying all offseason I don’t want him. We keep prospects that way and we have 50ish games available at 2nd and 3rd, 125ish games at DH; he would fit
Sign him cherrington. 3 years 60 million should get it done.
I love Geno and the chemistry he brings. Ideal situation for Seattle is to find a way to land BOTH Donovan AND Ketel and run Williamson on the bench with Emerson at 3B. Dipoto is REALLY tight holding onto his prospects. So my guess is he’s attempting to land one of Donovan/Ketel and if one one is landed then Geno would fit, but since Polanco is gone that really frees up DH for Geno more. No way Donovan as a super utility ends up costing is more then 1 top 100 prospect (I know Cards are pushing for 2). And I also see Dbacks taking Evans AND Young as the 2 key players in a Ketel trade with some other lower level pitching prospects. With Donovan’s great IF defense he is also versatile and good defense in RF and LF. ‘If’ Dipoto ends up landing BOTH Donovan & Ketel we are talking VERY serious contenders! If Howard lets Dipoto trade for Donovan AND Ketel, and still figure out away to land Geno to DH THAT would be a ticket to the World Series.
But more realistic is land one of Donovan/Ketel (probably Donovan) and then signing Geno.
Dr.Felix – As much as I couldn’t stand Howard Lincoln, he’s long gone. Do you mean John Stanton?
Yep my bad.
The Mariners need a 3rd baseman. Miss me with all this “looking mostly at 2b” BS.
Geno/Williamson both aren’t it. And the m’s are blowing this offseason being cheap once again.
They’re worse than the team that lost in the playoffs
Fenway would be perfect for his swing-60 homers
Statcast shows he would have hit 48 HR had he played all of his games in Fenway last season. There were 17 other parks with equal or better numbers.
He would be great for the Reds at first/DH. He seemed to enjoy his here the first time playing for some horrible teams, so I can definitely see his excitement about a return now.
Sounds like a good fit for Citizens Bank Park.
As much as I like Geno, I don’t see the fit in Seattle. It’s not the small sample at T-Mobile last year that influences me, it’s the simple fact that I have confidence in Ben Williamson and Colt Emerson, and singing him to DH just doesn’t make sense given he has value defensively as a third baseman.
I’d rather see them trade for Ketel Marte or Nico Hoerner, and one of Yandy Díaz or Iván Herrera, assuming those names are available.
*Cue someone telling me that Hoerner is a fixed part of the Cubs and Herrera is a core player for the Cardinals.
.
Uh-oh.
He’s is going to regress. Even before the trade if you look at his numbers he did the majority of his damage at home in Arizona. His road splits compared to home were considerably worse before the trade. His road splits were about the same numbers as his last season in Seattle. This team plays true outcome baseball. But Suarez’s strikeout rate is just a killer. Also this team really struggles with productive outs (advancing runners, sac flys) I would much much prefer if the Ms could find a way to acquire Nico hoerner. Excellent contact, strikeout rates and productive outs. This would add more balance to the lineup, not to mention the excellent defense at second. Which would give the m’s arguably one of the best up the middle defenses in the league, with JP, Nico, Cal, and Julio.
I think we determined a ball is hit to 3rd base 2x a game on average…..
And…
HR derby players are not likely to be able to place the ball like baseball players used to be able to do….
No one dares say defense at 3rd is not quite vital…..
Hire the Superfife!
The best will see on the field with Geno is he can play the bunts well also he makes his throws accurate. He is a good personality on the team. The money amount to sign him is a real set back with limited value.
