The Rays are among a number of teams that have been tied to Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte. Arizona general manager Mike Hazen has consistently downplayed the chance of a deal coming together on their MVP-caliber second baseman, but he hasn’t slammed the door shut given the team’s need for starting pitching.
Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports that conversations with the Rays have kicked around a framework that would send both Ryan Pepiot and Shane Baz to the desert. Piecoro writes that nothing is believed to be close on that front and the Rays are not necessarily any kind of frontrunner. Indeed, he adds that the Diamondbacks have had conversations with another team interested in Marte that would be built around a bigger-name starting pitcher.
Whether or not talks with Tampa Bay progress, the mention of multiple controllable starters hammers home the high asking price which the Diamondbacks have set. Pepiot landed in Tampa Bay as the centerpiece of the Tyler Glasnow return two offseasons ago. He’s the team leader with 297 2/3 innings pitched since the start of 2024.
The former third-round pick owns a 3.75 earned run average while striking out a little more than a quarter of opposing hitters. He’s a decent strike-thrower who sits around 95 MPH with his heater and has a plus changeup. Pepiot’s slider is a distant third offering, and the changeup has made him a reverse splits pitcher. He has held left-handed hitters to a .192/.287/.354 batting line with a near-28% strikeout rate over the past two seasons. Righties have hit .243/.303/.420 while punching out at a 23% clip.
Pepiot is unlikely to develop into an ace, but he’s an established mid-rotation starter who turned 28 in August. He has a little over three years of service time, so he’s under arbitration control through 2028. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects him for a $3.7MM salary. Teams place a premium on an affordable #3-type starter. The Rays presumably aren’t shopping Pepiot, but it’s a testament to Marte’s offensive impact that the righty would be on the table in those conversations.
Baz, 26, has also come up in trade talks with the Astros. The 6’3″ righty is a former top prospect who has yet to reach his upper mid-rotation ceiling. That’s partially due to some early-career injuries, including Tommy John surgery that wiped out his 2023 season. He posted a 3.06 ERA across 14 starts when he returned in ’24. That earned him a spot in Kevin Cash’s rotation this year, but Baz had an up-and-down performance. He concluded with a 4.87 ERA across 166 1/3 innings. That’s despite a solid 24.8% strikeout percentage and 11.6% swinging strike rate.
The pure upside might be higher with Baz than it is with Pepiot. He sits 97 MPH and gets above-average movement on an 85 MPH knuckle-curve and 90 MPH cutter. Baz has plus stuff and is a decent enough strike thrower. He has been held back by a lack of start-to-start consistency. He allowed one run or fewer 10 times (including seven scoreless appearances) but also had 10 outings in which he gave up five or more runs.
Baz also has between three and four service years and is eligible for arbitration through 2028. He’s projected for a $3.1MM salary. Teams are probably divided as to whether they’d prefer Pepiot’s stability or Baz’s raw stuff, but both pitchers have significant trade value. They’re two of the three returning Tampa Bay pitchers (alongside Drew Rasmussen) who topped 100 innings. The Rays are likely to give Steven Matz a starting opportunity, but they’d certainly need to backfill the rotation if they traded two starters. Shane McClanahan hasn’t pitched since 2023. Joe Boyle and Ian Seymour have limited track records.
The Diamondbacks would require a monster return built around MLB starting pitching to move Marte. He’s coming off a .283/.376/.517 showing with 28 home runs. Marte is the best second baseman in the league and is signed for a bargain $102.5MM over the next six seasons (the final of which is a player option year).
“I think it’s a risky deal when you’re talking about trading really, really good players at all,” Hazen told Piecoro. “It’s something that we have to at least listen to in our job. It’s not something that you really look forward to, necessarily, when you have the players that we do. But it’s also the reality of our team and where we are that I have to consider some things.”
Arizona agreed to terms with Michael Soroka on a one-year deal this week. He’ll be in the rotation alongside Ryne Nelson, Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt. (They’re unlikely to get Corbin Burnes back from Tommy John surgery before August.) Nelson was the only one of that trio who found much success this year. The D-Backs need to add another two starters and don’t have a ton of payroll space to address that via free agency. They’re also looking for bullpen help and could upgrade at third base or in the outfield.
While Marte is the best second baseman at least loosely available on the trade market, the Rays ironically have the second-best such option. Brandon Lowe is coming off a 31-homer season in which he hit .256/.307/.477 over 553 plate appearances. Lowe is entering the final season of his contract and is set to make $11.5MM. The Rays have reportedly gotten hits from the Pirates and Reds (surely among others) about his availability.
President of baseball operations Erik Neander touched on Lowe’s trade candidacy from the Winter Meetings (link via Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times). He called the two-time All-Star an “important, impactful player who provides power at a position that is hard to find.” Neander acknowledged the Rays’ history of shopping players whose control windows were closing but praised both Lowe and Yandy Díaz as longtime contributors.
“Our history is our history. We’ve made (trades) with players that are established, that are impactful contributors that as they get their way closer to free agency, we’ve made plenty of those decisions. But we’ve also made decisions the last few years to kind of continue to roll forward with these guys. We greatly appreciate them and are more than happy to ride in the next year and see what this team can do.”
Both clubs could go in a few different directions over the coming weeks. There’s no guarantee either will end up moving their star second baseman, but the trade market has yet to really pick up as most of the top free agent hitters continue weighing their options.

This would be a million times more surprising than Alonso
This would be a blockbuster!
Arizona should jump at this.
How is Baz, Pepiot and Lowe of not a greater value than Marte alone? Especially with Lowe being 1 year younger and much cheaper?. I’d be upset if I was a Ray’s fan with this trade….Now if the Rays want Albies for those 2 guys maybe we can talk haha.
This article and the Tampa Bay Times article are both suggesting that Lowe would be traded not to Arizona but another team for assets.
The reds could probably get something going if they were interested, plenty of pitching and in theory McLain could go back to fill 2b
D-Backs do need starting pitchers. Glad those two managed to play full season in 2025. Still would like to see Marte finish career in Arizona though.
What people dont know is that Ketel has 46M deferred. Hes making around 9-11M over the next 5 years. For the best 2B on a contract like that, Dbacks will get a haul for Marte if they want to move him. Even low budget teams want him because he’s a superstar for cheap.
Rays making any trade in which they’re getting the star player feels so freaking weird. I guess I perpetually just want them to play their brand of baseball.
That’s Raysist.
The trade does make sense for both sides. Just sure if the rays would take on the salary even though marte’s deal isnt crazy.
In my strongest Darth Sidious impression: “Do it!”
‘It’s a Trap!’
This trade would hurt both sides and that’s how you know it’s a fairly even swap… but I would give a slight edge to the Rays.
If this is turning to a bidding war with other teams, the Rays will probably have to throw in another pitcher to sweeten the pot. The Rays pitching depth would be a mess after this trade, but it would be a nice change of pace from how they usually do things. This would be a good way for the new owners to endear themselves with fans.
Glasnow better than Pepiot
depends on how you look at it and Pepiot is only beginning his career. he certainly appears more durable than Tyler so far. got to give to get and no room to complain but as a Dodger fan I was hoping he’d stick around. just too much young talent in the minors atm. in retrospect it would have been better to see Miller go in that trade.
You’re confusing “better” with “more valuable”. Glasnow is objectively a better pitcher but he may not be more valuable than Pepiot because of injuries. That said, I’d rather have Glas on the mound in the playoffs or world series than Pepiot.
Glasnow has better stuff but since the trade Pepiot has added more value. Pepiot has thrown 70 more innings than Glasnow, similar ERAs and slightly better WAR. Glasnow has thrown over 100 innings in his career 3 times with a career high of 134 IP. Not a very reliable pitcher. Plus hes several years older and makes a ton more.
Rumors keep the off season going. I would be surprised if Marte gets traded for anything other than a blow away trade.
Ray’s trying to destroy baseball by getting all the star players.
Was the report about acquiring “star Marte” or “Starling Marte”?
If the Rays want one of your players, you should probably keep them.
Yea this is a non story. There’s a better chance that Diddy didn’t diddle than the Rays trading for Marte.
Probably wishful thinking from the Arizona side.
Marte is 32, so he is going to be on his way down as far as production. I just don’t get it. While I would like to see Brandon Lowe and his unreliable back out of town, I don’t think Marte is a solution. Aranda has played second. Put him at second, either let Yandy start, or flip him to St. Louis for a starting catcher in case Feduccia doesn’t hit. Might as well trade Josh Lowe for something. As much as I think he is due to start, the Rays can’t have Mullins not playing, and almost the same with Fraley. Mangum and Simpson would be great as starters if they can hit, but as tempting as they look, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them flop with ‘Captain .200 Batting Average/200 Strikeouts a year’ Chad Mottola still on the staff as a coach. Even with them reduced to bench work you still have a valuable backup in Palacios and I guess DeLuca would be the other starter until he flops at the batting side. Then you still have Vilade and Peters who might get released. Just a glut of outfielders with some guys with potential but no clear studs who are going to help win a title. Trade these guys for decent starters. Even just a C who hits over .250 and a SS who hits .250 (which would be about 100 points higher than Walls). But they are keeping these AAAA outfielders, trading their 2nd and 3rd best starting pitchers, and I could see Rasmussen getting dealt as well. Fairbanks didn’t even get an offer. What is the front office doing? If you do a few moves I mentioned above, offered Alonso a fair contract, your potential lineup could include
C Willson Contreras (from St. Louis in Diaz trade)
1b Alonso (free agent)
2b Aranda
SS anybody but Walls, maybe sign Kiner-Falefa until Carson Williams is ready in July
3b Caminero
LF Josh Lowe
CF Simpson
RF Mullins
DH Keegan or Feduccia if they hit, DeLuca, Fraley, or Mangum, whichever one hits better
Staff
Rasmussen
Baz
Pepiot
McClanahan
Mitch Keller (in B Lowe trade)
You could have McClanahan as your ace followed by Rasmussen, Keller, Baz would be #4 with less pressure on him to pitch like an ace, and Pepiot is a year older and your #5 guy with potential to pitch like a 2 or a 3.
Your bullpen is halfway decent if you kept Fairbanks, and use some extra outfielders, whoever doesn’t make the cut to get help.
It’s just a shame how this front office is adding outfielders and subtracting pitchers. Yeah, they’ll eventually get 9 guys on the field, but I can tell this year is already a rebuild, and with guys like Xavier Isaac taking a step back, the future isn’t as bright as it could be either. Enjoy Caminero while you can. He’s going to bring in the next crop of Francisco Mejia’s, Luis Patino’s, Johnny DeLuca’s, and whoever the hell we got fleeced with for Arozarena and Paredes. Let’s hope ownership spends when this stadium comes cause it could be a bleak decade or so.
Contreras $17.5MM
Alonso $32MM (topping Baltimore)
IKF $4MM (assuming this rate on a 1 year deal)
Keller $15.4MM
Fairbanks $11MM
Minus Lowe @ $11.5MM.
So your plan is for Tampa Bay to add $68.4MM in payroll for this upcoming season? Lol, keep dreaming.
I believe I heard Alonso has been taken off the board. Can you try your scheme again without him?
That is an absolutely awful analysis and you really tried too.
Let’s hear yours, Einstein.
I realize he got signed yesterday. I was giving a scenario that would’ve worked had the Rays decided to add payroll and a decent 1b like Alonso had still been on the board, but we all know that they were too late.
The Contreras trade would’ve had Yandy Diaz and his 12 million sent to St. Louis, so it makes it a little more palatable. They have the money. All owners do.
Remember, children: Profit=unpaid labor.
The final sentence in your last comment just proves why you posted that atrocious hypothetical Rays off-season originally, lol. “Profit= unpaid labor”. And I actually wasted my time commenting back to you. Twice at this point. So I guess we can both be ashamed Karensjer.
The Diamondbacks are going to recognize in a couple weeks they are short to starting pitchers. At that point it will be too late to trade Marte as the buyers will have moved on. Then the price will drop.
Every time I see a new Ketel Marte trade rumor I know it’s a slow news day, headlines driven by the media to get clicks,
As a Giants fan I’d rather see the snakes hang on to Marte through his eventual (clearly not there yet) decline and fail to flip him for multiple promising starters
Two capable SP’s for an aging hitter? Yikes.
@macbeth. Yeah but marte is on a palatable contract. Essentially they got pepiot, and baz for archer. That’s definitely the best infielder you can get for the price. Rays are playing with house money at this point. I can see them trading lowe for pitching, because he will probably be more expensive than marte when he hits the market.
I think Pep and Baz produce more value than Marte especially when contracts are considered.
If they trade Low they’ll need to replace him but trading 40% of your rotation is still steep even with injuries on Baz factored in.
In other words, 2 capable SP for an MVP candidate. Rays should add more
The Astros are not getting Shane Baz. I would hate to admit it but it’s the truth.
Tampa has new ownership and a new stadium in the works.
I know that everyone says Marte is aging and 32 and a problem in the clubhouse…..
I want to give the perspective from a long time Dbacks fan. I’m 28 now with a wife and newborn and live in Peoria, a small suburb north of Phoenix.
I started watching the Dbacks in 2012 and became a huge fan of Goldy and when they traded him it made sense but also hurt so much because he was THE guy. Since then, Marte has been THE guy.
Marte since 17-18 has been phenomenal with his bat, glove, move to CF, his role in the clubhouse, I think his stats speak for itself and I really do love watching him play everyday here in AZ. Also, his playoff run in 2023, he played so well and carried the team.
With that being said this was my mindset until August when these strange stories came out about him. I really do that think some bad stuff happened this year and was a fluke to his reputation.
I really would hate to see him traded at this point but with how our team looks it almost feels inevitable. I know that whatever team gets him will 100% win the deal. He is a lights out player and I personally don’t think he is in decline.
I’m also a D’backs fan, what I am seeing is if they trade Marte, which I think is only about 50/50 right now, Hazen has to at least get 2 starting ML pitchers, plus a first baseman. Reason being is that the D’Back farm system has basically crapped out on their raising their own developing an ace pitching staff in the minors, so they have to trade for starting to pitch now since they’re not enough in the budget for top free agents. Marte is 32, his talents will start to slow, bat speed, range, arm, always have had leg issues, now reported club house issues, this is the best time to trade him for the betterment of the roster and clubhouse. It already looks like another season of bullpen by committee will have to be used, which will never work. Pitching staff is weak, this is a good chip to trade with a lot of inquiries, D’Backs have to make a deal.
Rays need a big bat to team with JC & Arnada. If they resigned Littel & Houser they could survive trading away Pepiot & Baz. Rays do have some good younger arms in A & AA.
Just as I suspected, the Red Sox weren’t “in” on Marte, ever, in a serious way.
I wonder who the mystery team dangling their bigger-name starting pitcher is…
