Red Sox Acquire Willson Contreras

By Mark Polishuk | December 21, 2025 at 11:06pm CDT

Less than a month after landing Sonny Gray, the Red Sox have acquired another prominent veteran talent from St. Louis.  Boston has landed first baseman Willson Contreras and $8MM in cash considerations from the Cardinals in exchange for a package of three right-handed pitchers — Hunter Dobbins and prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita.

Contreras and his agents at Octagon negotiated an extra $1MM bonus for Contreras to approve the trade, as the veteran’s contract includes a full no-trade clause.  The final two guaranteed seasons of Contreras’ contract and the club option on his services for 2028 have been slightly reworked, so he’ll now receive $18MM in 2026, $17MM in 2027, and the Red Sox hold a $20MM club option on his services in 2028, with a $7.5MM buyout.  (The previous terms included salaries of $18MM and $18.5MM in 2026-27, plus a $5MM buyout on a 2028 club option valued at$17.5MM.)

The final accounting works out to $42.5MM in guaranteed money for Contreras over the remainder of his deal.  Factoring in the Cardinals’ $8MM contribution, Boston’s commitment to Contreras is $34.5MM in salary, and his luxury tax number is $17.25MM.

When the Cards were first exploring a rebuild last winter, neither Contreras or Gray was open to waiving their no-trade protection.  After a lackluster 78-84 season sent the Cards more firmly looking towards the future, Gray, Contreras, and Nolan Arenado (who blocked a deal to the Astros last winter) all indicated in recent months that they were more open to accepting a trade.

In Contreras’ case, he cracked the door open at the end of season by saying that “if something comes up…and it makes sense for me and my future, how about we talk about that?” Contreras said.  The first baseman stressed that he was still eager to contribute as a veteran leader within the Cardinals’ rebuild, though reports emerged a few weeks ago that Contreras was showing an increased willingness to waive his no-trade clause and move on to a new challenge.

Contreras (who turns 34 in May) ends his St. Louis tenure with a .261/.358/.459 slash line and 55 home runs over 1416 plate appearances from 2023-25.  Signed to a five-year, $87.5MM free agent deal back in December 2022, the idea was that Contreras would take over from Yadier Molina as the team’s regular catcher, yet in somewhat awkward fashion, the Cardinals reduced Contreras’ playing time behind the plate and used him regularly as a DH.  Heading into the 2025 season, Contreras became a full-time first baseman, returning to a position he’d played only a handful of times earlier in his career with the Cubs.  The Outs Above Average metric gave Contreras a positive +6 grade for his first base work in 2025, but he also received -1 Defensive Runs Saved.

Regardless, it would seem like Contreras is at least a passable defender at the cold corner, and the Red Sox can live with only so-so defense as long as the former All-Star continues to hit.  Contreras batted .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs over 563 PA in 2025, translating to a 124 wRC+.  A career-low 7.8% walk rate was a concern and Contreras has always been prone to strikeouts, but he continued to make consistently hard and productive contact.  Contreras is a right-handed batter, which helps balance out a Boston lineup that tilts to the left side.

Contreras’ final four seasons in Chicago overlapped with Craig Breslow’s time working in the Cubs’ front office, before Breslow was hired to take over Boston’s baseball operations department following the 2023 season.  Breslow’s tenure has thus far been defined by significant trades, ranging from the deals that brought Gray, Garrett Crochet, and now Contreras to Fenway Park, and last June’s surprising move that sent Rafael Devers to the Giants.

One of the many factors involved in the Devers trade was Devers’ displeasure over being asked to move to first base in the wake of Triston Casas’ season-ending knee surgery in early May.  While Romy Gonzalez and deadline pickup Nathaniel Lowe helped fill the first base void, there was little doubt the Sox were going to address the position in a larger fashion this winter.  Pete Alonso, Isaac Paredes, Kazuma Okamoto, Munetaka Murakami, and Bryce Eldridge were among the first base candidates on Boston’s radar on the free agent and trade fronts this winter, and Cotillo reported last week that Contreras was another name under consideration.

With Contreras now in the fold, a Casas trade now looks increasingly likely.  Casas has been floated in trade talks even dating back to last winter and prior to his knee surgery, and despite his injury-shortened season, rival clubs figure to have interest in the former top prospect.  Conversely, if the Sox could figure out a way to dump Masataka Yoshida’s contract, Casas could share first base/DH duties with Contreras.

Adding a first baseman solves another piece of Boston’s infield puzzle, and turns a position from a weak link into a strength.  The Red Sox remain linked to such other major infield names as Bo Bichette or old friend Alex Bregman, and Contreras’ $36MM price tag shouldn’t prevent the Sox from spending big on either of those names, even considering Boston’s recent wariness about major financial commitments.  Trading an outfielder could further shake up the position-player mix, and there have been consistent rumors about the possibility of the Sox moving an outfielder for pitching.

The Red Sox entered the winter with a lot of pitching depth in terms of young arms, yet were lacking proven frontline hurlers that could join Crochet and Brayan Bello in the rotation.  Gray was one answer, and fellow trade pickup Johan Oviedo could be another after Oviedo was acquired from the Pirates.  This has made Breslow more comfortable in trading from further down his pitching depth chart, and after moving Richard Fitts and prospect Brandon Clarke to St. Louis for Gray, Breslow has now parted ways with Dobbins, Fajardo, and Aida.

The equation has been pretty simple for Breslow.  The CBO has been willing to move some (i.e. Jhostynxon Garcia, Kyle Teel) of Boston’s more highly-touted prospects while hanging onto the likes of Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, and also moving some pitchers that no longer seem to be in Boston’s plans.  In Dobbins’ case, he isn’t even going to be available for the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster, as the righty tore his right ACL last July.  This was the second right ACL tear Dobbins has endured, plus he has a Tommy John surgery on his checkered health history.

Dobbins made his MLB debut in 2025, and posted a 4.13 ERA, 6.6% walk rate, and 17.6% strikeout rate over his first 61 innings in the Show.  An eighth round pick for the Sox in the 2021 draft, Dobbins is more of grounder-heavy pitcher than a big strikeout arm, but his slider and curveball have good whiff rates as complements to his 95.5mph fastball.  Significant questions remain about Dobbins’ durability, but the 26-year-old right-hander has less than a year of MLB service time and now projects to be a longer-term add to the St. Louis rotation.

Cardinals president of baseball ops Chaim Bloom is plenty familiar with Dobbins, as Bloom was running Boston’s front office when Dobbins came into the organization.  Interestingly, of the five pitchers obtained by the Cardinals in the Contreras and Gray trades, Dobbins is the only one who was part of Boston’s organization when Bloom was still there.

Fitts and (when healthy) Dobbins can factor in the Cardinals’ rotation picture as early as 2026.  Dobbins doesn’t at all fit Bloom’s desire to add another veteran arm to the rotation, yet finding an innings-eater is a short-term goal, whereas Dobbins is part of the bigger picture.  That has been the story of this offseason in St. Louis, as with Bloom now fully installed atop the decision-making pyramid, the Cardinals are embarking on the rebuild they considered but then backed away from last winter.

Trading Contreras removes another big chunk of salary from the Cards’ books.  An Arenado deal could be the next step, though that trade will be trickier due to both Arenado’s salary and the fact that (unlike Contreras or Gray) Arenado is coming off a rough 2025 season.  Other players like Brendan Donovan and JoJo Romero have also been regularly mentioned in trade rumors.  One player St. Louis wasn’t very willing to move is Alec Burleson, who now looks to step right into the everyday first base role with Contreras gone.

Fajardo was an international signing for the White Sox in 2024, and he has now been traded twice before his 20th birthday.  Fajardo changed his Sox when Chicago sent him Boston a year ago in the Cam Booser trade, and the righty had a 2.25 ERA, 28.8% strikeout rate, and a 9.4% walk rate over 72 innings in rookie ball and with A-level Salem in 2025.  MLB Pipeline ranked Fajardo 23rd on their ranking of the top 30 Red Sox prospects, describing the teenager as “a potential mid-rotation starter” whose four-seam fastball can hit 97mph.

Aita was a sixth-round pick for the Red Sox in the 2024 draft.  His first pro season saw the 22-year-old right-hander post a 3.98 ERA in 115 1/3 combined innings in Salem and at high-A Greenville, with a 21.4% strikeout rate and 6.5% walk rate.  As per Geoff Pontes of Baseball America, Aita technically has a five-pitch arsenal but he rarely throws his slider.  Aita’s fastball is in the 92-93mph range but with plenty of movement, and there’s also a lot of movement and spin on his sweeper and cutter.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan (multiple links) was the first to report that Contreras was going to Boston for Dobbins and multiple minor league pitchers, with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal later identifying Fajardo and Aita.  ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported the detail of Contreras’ $1MM bonus for waiving his no-trade clause.  MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported the $8MM heading from St. Louis to Boston, and Cotillo and The Athletic’s Katie Woo had the details on the reworked money in Contreras’ contract.

@Dbird777 But not real pitching. Just some fringy arms. Contreras is not a particularly bright prize, a 2 win 1Bman turning 34, with the Cardinals only eating a modest fraction of what he’s owe. He’s a decent bet to be respectable, but there’s what… 25-33% chance that he’s not worth a regular lineup spot as soon as 2026? He might hang on into 2027 as a platoon bat vs LHP, but it’s hard to picture him being worth 2+ wins in each of 2026 and 2027.

I think I agree with everything you said, but I think its a great move. 2 WAR out of first base is nothing to sneeze at. He cost about what he’s worth, and he moved from a rebuilding team to one trying to compete. I’d rather my team took this approach then signing Schwarber or Alonso.

Uncle – I called it! Not exactly the “slugger” we wanted obviously, averaging only 17 HR a year. Casas can’t be happy about this, as I don’t think Contreras will catch more than 60 games if any. Gotta believe if something happens with Narvaez or Wong, he would at least help fill in?

I predict he will not catch a single inning in a 9 inning game all year barring multiple injuries in the same game.

I also predict fans will be happy with the acquisition and he will do very well at the plate.

MLB – Okay bookmark this ;O)

I mean he caught 51 games just last year, it’s not like he hasn’t caught in forever. As many people mentioned, it was injuries not performance that resulted in him switching to first base.

In fact last year he was middle of the pack with an even zero DRS (min 400 innings).

He’s not a catcher (outside of an occasional start if in an injury pinch) anymore, 1B/DH. Really solid at-bat, he’ll take at Fenway. You’ll also love how hard he plays and wears his emotion on his sleeve.

Uncle – I’d approve of that, Suarez would be a great addition for what they need.

The defense and strikeouts aren’t great, but overall it would be a great move for the price.

I suppose since it is still December 2025 you are both saying the same thing if by last year he means 2024 with 2025 being this year and 2026 being next year.

Last year and last season are different and he said last year. But as I said before, I think he is a 1B/DH who will only catch when multiple in-game injuries occur.

By last year, you mean 2024, not 2025. The Cardinals never liked his handling of pitchers. He was famously thrown under the bus early in his first season in St. Louis, when they moved him to full time DH before he eventually returned to catching duties.

He isn’t a catcher because the Cardinals didn’t like his framing. If a team wanted to he could be their catcher. I am not saying it would be a smart move.

Bill – ABS begins next year, so framing will be less important.

Some people here just have severe tunnel vision, they don’t understand context or change.

Willson was a league-average catcher last year. Its hard to believe if Casas begins raking again and Wong or Narvaez get injured that Contreras wouldn’t fill in.

You called it. I don’t hate this move. Definitely an upgrade from last year. I hope they hold onto Casas, could be a nice platoon at 1stbase with Contreras. What are they going to do with the 4 outfielders and Yoshida?. Do they go into the season with all 5 players? I’m still hoping for that top of the rotation pitcher, but I think they believe the rotation is set.

I bet Casas starts in the minors and gets the Yoshida treatment, unless some team makes a decent offer.

One thing I always note, who is not scheduled to appear at FSG Fest. Of all the outfielders, Duran is the only one who is not scheduled ….. that’s probably a clue his days are numbered.

Interesting Fsg fest note. I’m starting to think if they trade one of Duran / Abreu I hope they keep Duran. I realize his 2025 wasn’t as great as his 2024: season but he is just so dynamic. He is so much fun to watch. His energy and speed will be sorely missed.

I agree Duran has more of an impact right now, but from the Sox perspective he’s much older and more expensive so he’s probably the one to go. And unfortunately there’s always the possibility he has a relapse of his personal issues. I do think all the trade talk last year impacted his performance.

If they keep Casas and he is hitting a ton, Contreras will be catching games, if Casas doesn’t hit, Contreras will be at 1st base. If Contreras doesn’t hit and Dobbins wins 12 games on a bad Cardinals team…. it will be a “Tolle” on the Boston faithful and could be an “Early” end to Breslow’s career in the front office.

I think if Casas is hitting a ton you have to get him ABs.

He cant play anywhere but first base.

Casas is a 40 HR type of player from the left-hand side, .850 OPS in ’23 and it is only his age 26 season. I guess you can DH him and take Yoshida’s bat out of the lineup. Yoshida is a career .282/.337/.425 hitter, Nippon HOF, another good lefty bat that Boston needs in the lineup.

Contreras is a good hitter, but your best lineup features Duran, Yoshida, Anthony, Contreras, Casas, Abreu, Story, Mayer, Rafaella and that is only possible with Contreras at catcher.

You can’t sign your way out of the Casas / Yoshida jam up. Id think Casas and Yoshida’s trade market could be real good but do you really want to trade either?

Casas has ‘potential’ to hit 40 HRs. Can he stay healthy? Lets face it both injuries were very simple activities. Swinging and Running to first base. Hes not expected to be ready for Opening Day. either.

Id say leave Casas down in Worcester and let him get as many reps as you can. If he’s healthy and swinging a nice bat, bring him up in a few months. Otherwise leave him in Worcester for the year.

Basically cross the, Both ‘Casas and Yoshida are Healthy Bridge’, when the situation arrives. Its only a problem if both are healthy and killing it. Otherwise, either one (I think) can be in Worcester. And if the Sox get lucky, and both are swinging good bats, their markets will be much better to trade one of them.

Boston has a better chance of finishing first than Toronto was given last year. After finishing last in 2024, Toronto were favourites to do so again. Boston/NYY/Orioles/Tor could finish in any order. I would pick the Yankees first and Sox second.

Willson Contreras now reminds me of 2003 Bill Mueller, who came to the Sox at 32 and slashed .326/.398/.540 for a .938 OPS

Fair assessment, Casas in AAA to begin the season is the best path but if he lights it up you have to get his bat in the lineup sooner than later.

Yoshida is healthy and I’d say in his prime.

An in-season trade is an option, as is Contreras catching ball games in ’26. I’d say their is a high probability in the latter. He could catch 80 games next season.

Literally nobody credible thinks of him as a catcher anymore. He’s done, he’s a first baseman now. Podcasters won’t even suggest the idea of him behind the plate.

No – I was in favor of Casas at DH years ago, he’s that bad defensively. I wanted Raffy at 1B and Casas at DH.

Like Joe Castig said, Casas has a highly unusual frame which makes fielding and running awkward for him. His refusal to participate in standard strength and conditioning doesn’t help.

He wouldn’t be the first to become washed up at 26 due to injuries.

John – For those of us who don’t own a 1986 DeLorean and therefore can’t time-travel to 2026, it’s 2025 right now and last year is 2024.

Sorry dude, I don’t participate in the dumbing down of society by saying things that make no sense. If you meant 2025, you could have said either “this year” or “last season”.

Looks like Breslow gave up nobody, nobody, and nobody. None of those pitchers even make a dent while we got a plus, plus bat and improve our infield defense.

Gray was also a big move.

Dobbins has a nice pitch mix, sits 96 with the heater, could potentially add a sinker.

Sweeper / Slider to RHH , Curveball / Splitter to LHH – his K/9 wasn’t fantastic but he had good numbers otherwise, low walks, good GB rates, low HR/9 – Dobbins is a good prospect proven at the MLB level, Boston gave up a good pitcher in Dobbins, the other two are low level prospects and could develop.

I think it was a bad trade for Boston. Dobbins is going to be a steady 3/4.

Dobbins pitched 60+ MLB innings last season and held his own.

Fitts and Dobbins should get some starts this season in St. Louis.

It doesnt seem to be coming together in Boston, feels like they fumbled the ball and have been scrambling to recover and its like one of those plays when the ball keeps moving towards the opposing teams goal line before squirting out of bounds. 1st and 10, Orioles!

In what way does it seem like the Red Sox fumbled the ball. If they were done with their offseason moves, I would be disappointed. I don’t think that is the case at all.

While the moves have not been the big flashy ones we would have liked, as long as they make a few more they could end up with a much improved team. I was hoping for Schwarber or Alonso, but that did not happen. Plan B may end up just as good.

How is that? Is it because they haven’t signed major FA? I know a lot of people wanted Alonso, but signing major free agents to big contracts isn’t usually their thing, and they have pretty middling success with that. JD Martinez & Bregman might be their best “big” free agent signings in the last 15 years. This ownership’s MO has been trade & extend.

The shorter-term trades have been good, they just need to bring Bregman back!

That goes to show how bad the Cardinals are. Dobbins gets some starts there but would have to have 4 go down to injuries in Boston to get a shot. That is why he was traded for someone that will start in Boston.

or the White Sox jumped right in after finding out the Red Sox did nothing more than “kick the tires” on Murakami and knew they didn’t have any real interest in him.

The Red Sox front office seems content to trade for players this off season so far- they are the only team to not sign a free agent.

White Sox probably got their best prospects last year, so for curiosity who does these “Yankees Whipping Boys” (meaning Red Sox) have left to deal? Red Sox cupboard is nearly bare. Seems like the only place to trade from is their 26 man roster. Believe me, nobody wants Casas.

Dobbins pitched some good innings last season, doesn’t have eye-popping numbers but its another one of Boston’s young group that could potentially be good this season when given a full-time role.

Sits 96 with the heater and has a nice mix of breaking balls – not exciting in the K/9 but doest walk a lot of hitters and keeps the ball in the yard.

Didn’t get completely hosed but spent a lot of money to ship out Dobbins and move Casas out of the lineup.

But that bridge has burnt down. Red Sox are floundering right now.. Contreras their “BIG MOVE”? Can’t imagine what would have been said if White Sox signed Contreras!!!!

        NO Saints:
        “Murakami is a awful deal”
Its not an “awful deal” if so please point out where that was said. Its a very risky deal, because, he cant hit fastballs, strikes out too much and cant field. This isnt my opinion, its every team that couldve beaten the White Sox offer’s opinion. Because, no way he goes to WS if there is a similar offer from a better team.

        “Contreras is awesome”
I doubt anyone called it “awesome”, if so please point out. However, it is a very good trade because it fills the biggest needs at their weakest spot: Good Defense, Good Right Handed Bat, Not a Long-Term Contract.

“Red Sox fans wanting Devers back from Frisco”
        What? Only the haters.

Devers didnt walk over and hold out his ha d to help them on their feet. Which. Would be acceptable with a tongue l-in-cheek remark or two…

No, devers walked over and kicked them in the metaphorical teeth while they were down.

Boston fans fiercely pritect their own, and stand up for them getting a second chance when they screw up. But what devers did man… its just a while nother level.

The move is fine but it still doesn’t provide 6the big bopper the team needs. There are many solid hitters but who’s going to hit 30+ homers that will scare the opposition? Assuming he’s not traded, Casas has the ability but can’t be depended on. Suarez is the only option left and while a good threat, he doesn’t have the wow factor that would totally make the lineup dangerous.

If Contreras platoons between DH and Catcher, then I’m totally cool with it …. but I know he’s not expected to catch, at least right now. That could change though.

And also to be totally cool with it, they MUST make at least one other move to bring a real slugger. If this is the “Righthanded power” guy they were seeking, it would be a major disappointment.

Even on a career 162-game average, it amounts to only 26 HR ….. not nearly enough, especially if you subtract Casas homeruns.

          Here’s my problem with this:
          – everyone complains about the last years of a long term contract where the player’s diminishing skills dont match the salary. But, why dont people understand that when you make the signing you get the benefit of the good peak years? With Contreras we are buying the last years of the diminishing player, without the benefit of having gotten the peak years.
          – the terms of Contreras contract are palatable now because its been four years since it was signed, and this is how much the market has moved, its not a bargain to get this player for $18m now, its on par with the market. Youre getting half the stats of Alonso, for half the salary

Sad, totally agree in that I wanted Alonso who I expected would return to NY. While he’s not perfect, he gives you the righty power and plays every day so Casas could then be dealt. Unfortunately, Boston fans have an ownership group who tasted winning, got us fans drunk on the success and now won’t go that extra mile leaving us without a camel to cross the desert.

The team doesn’t need a “big bopper” until a playoff run, and that bat can be added at the trade deadline. They were 7th in the league in runs scored without that bat in the lineup last year, and the young guns will provide more pop as they age and mature and see more AB’s.

They need to secure a #2 pitcher to help them win those close games while they are scoring 5-6 runs per game. They do that, they will be positioned very well for a post-season run. If at that point they need to add a bat, way easier to add a power bat then a stud pitcher come trade deadline.

          Just my two cents.

PS: let Bregman go elsewhere and save the money for a pitcher or a trade deadline move.

FPG – slept on this, here’s what I’m feeling this morning. Basically what posters here are celebrating is:
-trading Dobbins and Devers (in the prime of his career) for 2/3 of a mediocre Bregman season, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras…..all because in 6 years from now Devers is not gonna be worth the money, but paying for the downside of Contreras is OK. And, I like the Sonny Gray move
This makes no sense to me. Bailing out Chaim(?) Really?
People will accuse me of saying all this in a vacuum, but if you go back to December of 2024. These are the moves of significance since. So, I ask you, are we better off now?

dewey – I forgot to mention this, the Red Sox (I think Breslow, but not positive) pointed out that Casas could benefit from a demotion to Woosta and he DOES still have options. So giving him the Yoshida treatment next year is definitely in play.

Interestingly in the Netflix doc Casas said he insisted on living in a rental apartment because he believed there was the possibility of him being demoted.

Sad – I try not to think about the Raffy situation. It was so messed up, clearly he was nothing more than a stopgap until the kids (Roman, Marcelo, etc) were promoted. They never had any intention of keeping him for the length of the contract. I don’t know about his worth 6 years from now, his contract goes through only Age 36 which ironically was a HUGE reason why so many people here and elsewhere were thrilled he got the extension. The big debate back then was who should be extended longterm, Raffy or Xander, and the vast majority said Raffy because of his young age. If he continues to hit, which I fully expect, it will be an overpay only if he is a fulltime DH. But then again so will Soto, Alonso, Vlad, etc. If you look at Schwarber he’s a fulltime DH who is already making more than Raffy, I lean toward the Raffy contract as being reasonable in 6 years.

To answer your question, the Sox are obviously worse off because of the Raffy trade All they’ve got left are two huge question marks in Harrison and Hicks.

With Contreras, how it impacts the team largely depends on their willingness to spend. It’s a $34.5M CBT hit over the next two seasons … which means guess what?

For the next two years, Contreras + Hicks will cost the Sox MORE than Raffy’s salary!!!!

So the Raffy-haters can’t even say the Sox saved money by dumping his salary, because they didn’t.

No different than when they claimed the Sox saved money by trading Sale ….. which actually cost them MORE than Sale’s contract because they not only sent $17M to Atlanta, but they gave Gio $39M to replace Sale for two years.

So now the Sox are less than $29M away from the SECOND CBT THRESHOLD. If they were telling the truth about not wanting to go past the second threshold, then they probably can’t afford Bregman or Bichette and possibly not Suarez either. Which means hello Marte, if anyone.

That opens up everything. I lray they do not trade TC. I am fine with Campbell, Yoshida, Sogard, Eaton, if we must Trade an OF for that elusive “#2” Duran is likely the guy. His D is elite in RF, Cedanne going nowhere and Anthony handles LF. I think you might see Wong go bye bye…

Its almost like Boston needed to take a step back to move a step forward with the young group but decided to forgo the pause in favor of a proven veteran who has posted good numbers.

I think it is going to cost them in the team chemistry department. You have Casas out of a job, Narvaez watching his back, Gonzalez on the bench after a career year looking for ABs.

Contreras a good player but a bad fit.

Goldy would have been a good fit. He raked early in the season and crushes lefties. Casas could have been eased back in at first platooning with Goldy. Narvaez wouldn’t be looking over his shoulder.

Casas would have been comfortable with an older veteran on a one year deal as opposed to Contreras on a multi-year deal. He would have welcomed the HOF’er – he likely is upset with Contreras joining the club.

Unsure that Goldy was available but seemingly a perfect fit for the situation. Trading for Contreras expresses a lack of confidence in both Casas and Narvaez and that has an effect on the entire team.

55 HRs in 1400 ABs? I would not call that a “very, very good hitter.” He’s 34 and probably past his prime. I don’t like the trade.

The Sox should have given T. Casas one more chance before giving up on him and saved the $36 million to trade for and extend a #2 SP.

First basemen tend to age better than the more demanding positions and he still is a solid hitter. They were looking for a veteran to fill the position and found one.

Seems Dobbins being included in this deal essentially automatically makes it an “overpay,” I get the cards are sending some $$ but they’d have to pay his whole contract to make Dobbins the centerpiece…. Wait it would still be an overpay…. Im really confused by these teams giving up high end talent that’s already proven they’re ML capable players for slow, mid 30’s corner INF/OUT type “sluggers”/hitters, i mean Contreras isn’t even really a slugger, he’s an above average ML hitter but doesn’t really provide any other value, he seems well liked by teammates and that’s gotta be worth something but not sure how they figure they’re going to get the value out of Contreras, especially with his salary, (even with the cards covering however much) Dobbins and all of his cheap team control years is far more value…. But they throw in more prospects…. wow well of course I’m no MLB front office guy, but obviously 2+2=4 and I’m not sure how most likely the last few productive seasons of a slow, aging hitter is worth the league minimum years of a pitcher who’s just realizing his potential and coming into his prime…..its insanity really.. but goes on and on and ooooooonn, it’s HEAVEN AND HE….

@wtfCheese Dobbins has never been considered a ‘high end talent’; He has the ceiling of a ‘back end starter’ (per SP.com) and was never top-10 in the Red Sox system. Yhoiker was the high end talent in this deal – hopefully the Red Sox don’t regret dealing him.

Did the Red Sox likely give up more surplus value than the Cardinals? Yes. But that’s how almost every trade for an established ML player works.

@flags you’re talking about a guesstimate of valuation based on trade decisions while I was referencing value created by the players throughout the longevity of their careers. Two very different things.

I don’t put much stock in the trade value estimators, but they are useful in helping fans figure out what may be a fair theoretical trade. Other trade estimators (BTV) thought that his value was negative (which I didn’t agree with). Also, you should account for the additional 1mil added to his contract.

Fangraphs was valuing Willsons seasons, not his BTV surplus value. By Fangraphs, Willies seasons as a Cardinal have had surplus value over his FA contract. I see no reason to do the age related decline. Going to BOS his surplus may increase the next two seasons. I also disagreed with Contreras BTV value, obviously.

If that’s all they do, it’s not enough. But there’s still almost 2 months left in the offseason, so gotta be patient here ;O)

I think they’ve still got some trades coming to ease the logjam of starting pitchers.

Well it’s more like a win and a half – Bregman’s missed time last year narrowed the gap some while WC got more PAs than usual by not catching – and there is the 2 years age difference in Breggy’s favor. Plus playing a more significant position on IF defense well, which hasn’t been the BoSox strength. And perhaps a more needed one than 1B.
1.5 wins is worth $15 – 18 mil so it likely comes down to what Bregman finally gets and for how long.

The Red Sox are acquiring Willson Contreras from the Cardinals for three players, including righthander Hunter Dobbins, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The clubs have not confirmed the deal, which required Contreras to waive a no-trade clause.

Righthander Yhoiker Fajardo (who was the No. 23-ranked prospect in the Cardinals’ system) and righthander Blake Aita are also headed to St. Louis and Boston will receive $8 million in the trade.

Catcher has far more value than 1B. Any games he wasn’t filling in at catcher he could DH or play 1B to give days off. If he agreed to be the back-up catcher, the positional flexibility he’d give the Sox would be of much greater value for the them than as the regular 1b. 1B is a much easier position to fill, lol indeed. Also, not a Sox fan.

Maybe the Royals shouldn’t have played Perez at C, or the Giants shouldn’t have played Posey there. Play the game to win, not to try and not get injured.

I also said if he agreed to play back-up. If he prefers 1B that’s the Sox’s loss. But at least they should explore whether he would.

That’s what did him was losing playing time. He’s better off for his health and age and bat at 1B/DH he’s going to bring a fire to the clubhouse and is a great glue guy.

That’s one to put it if objectivity is not an issue. Perhaps the reason instead was the the Cards had 2 young catchers they were trying to develop, and to protect Contreras from injury, maximizing his bat.

Though he was subpar as a framer, the fact that in 2023 he was just -1 in blocks above average (Murphy at 16 was best, Sabol at -19 was worst), had a good pop time (tied for 20th out of 81 qualifiers), and was tied for 8th overall in throwing, with 4 catcher’s CS above average, suggests he was more than adequate behind the plate.

@asdfgh There’s also the fact that Contreras has been worth the same fWAR over the last three years as Pete Alonso, but instead of 5/155m he’s costing Boston 2/34m and three FV 30-35 arms.

Granted, age has something to do with it, But Alonso may not be worth a lineup spot in 2028.

What’s silly are teams like the Angels waiting four years too long to move Mike Trout off of CF.

The Cards got 185 more PA from Contreras in 2025 because they had the brains to move him completely off of catcher.

He’s already in decline, even as the rare position player over age 32 who’s still worth 2 fWAR in a season (just 6 such players among all 12 postseason teams in 2025). Putting him at catcher in 2025 would have been a great way to destroy his remaining value.

Well he had pretty much full games played loads as a starting C every year from ‘17 – ‘23. Missed time in ‘24 and Cards did seem to sour on him there in ‘25. But he could back up there if Narvaez plays regularly. And if Wong has another ‘25 he gives them a better option there, then fill out at 1B & DH too matched with lefties in Casas & Yoshi or 1 of the OFs at DH depending on who remains by March. Options

Why would you assume a back-up catcher would just sit in the digout when he wasn’t catching? And as I said, “Any games he wasn’t filling in at catcher he could DH or play 1B to give days off.” When a team has a guy with his ability with the bat it’s a no brainer to maximize that.

Nothing, Don’t put words in my mouth. If you want to respond to my post, at least get what I said straight. I never said he’s the back-up catcher. I don’t work for the Sox, nor do I have the power to suggest that to them.

My opinion was that IF the Sox employed him as the back-up catcher, with positional flexibility at 1B and DH, they could maximize his value. I have no idea if Contreras would even be open to the idea or not.

I can see him taking some reps at catcher throughout the year. His framing isn’t as bad as some Cardinals brass would have you believe. The way he fought back from criticism and adversity about his catching ability early in his Cardinals tenure shows the type of character he is. A great pick up for the Red Sox.

No, defensively speaking this is very much like when Boston acquired aging but still effective bat-first catcher Mike Napoli for the 2013 season and made sure Napoli never caught another major league game..

There may be a decent Napoli parallel here regarding intangibles as well.

agent – Not a good comparison, Nap sucked at catching the year before he joined the Sox.

He was 3rd-worst in MLB with a -13.1 Def rating and 4th-worst with a -12 DRS.

Contreras was decent last year, not bad at all. Middle of the pack.

Contreras was decent last year at 1B, and I think he’ll be good enough there for the Red Sox at all.

I was comparing what putting Contreras behind the plate would have been like compared to the Napoli situation. And yes, Napoli was far worse defensively at C than Contreras has been at any point in his career.

Nonetheless, I think that Contreras, the Cardinals, and the Red Sox have all turned the corner and don’t think of him as even a part-time catcher anymore.

agent – Things can change, time will tell. They obviously wanted a catcher to pursue re-acquiring Teel as much as they have, I think Wong is on thin ice.

Remember they didn’t think of Raffy as anything other than a DH, and within a few weeks they wanted him to play first base.

He DH’ed 90 games in 2025 and was healthier than he’s been since 2021. But sure, Strearns, let’s see how many games it is before he takes some spikes to the back of his ankle at first.

The best ability is availability in this guy doesn’t have it at all now no one can predict the future, but based on his past, the Cardinals will be lucky if he pitches at all Cardinals and Red Sox are my two favorite teams so if anyone was going to get Contreras for a little or no return, I am glad it was Boston, but let’s not act like the Cardinals got anywhere near fair value for him

Yeah, I suspect that Boston is the only team who needed and could afford Contreras willing to trade a pitcher as solid as Dobbins plus two more pitching prospects.

Stearns probably wanted to keep the best Mets pitching prospects out of a Castillo deal and may not have had the quantity of Fajardo and Aita level pitching prospects to trade.

        Per Ian Cundall on X:

Don’t think it’s a coincidence that the three pitchers the Red Sox dealt for Wilson Contreras all have fastballs that struggle to miss bats consistently. The highest whiff rate of the trio was 16%. MLB average was 21-22%.

        Hunter Dobbins 11.9%
        Yhoiker Fajardo 12.9%
        Blake Aita 16%

Why? I mean, its an offensive addition I suppose. But for as much as Contreras gets paid, and the negligible difference in production, why not just give Casas another shot to see if he can actually stay healthy? This doesn’t move the needle a whole lot…move for the sake of making a move doesn’t usually work out well. Guess it all depends on what they gave up

Correct. The team has high enough aspirations that they can’t afford to have Casas trying to “figure it out” in their everyday lineup. He can work on refining his game in Worcester, and if it’s going well then we can talk. If it looks like he’s rediscovered his form from 2023, he can step in and replace Yoshida at DH with no issue.

Definitely not mediocre. He gets on base and hits home runs. I am sure he will be licking his chops when he sees the monster. I also believe he is a solid fielder at first. Not a big splash but a solid acquisition.

I don’t know what to believe. This is the type of move that from most teams to me would indicate they aren’t done. Whatever they ultimately do about retaining or replacing Bregman, we did also need a competent RH bat and someone who isn’t a disaster at first base. Contreras definitely checks both those boxes.

Now this is where I’m not sure what’s next. If they were serious about keeping pace with the top of the AL and acting like the Red Sox again, more moves would/will be coming.

And yet, the way they’ve been acting the last 7 years, I am terrified this is their “big move” they’re going to be bragging about the rest of the offseason.

Dirty – I’m with you. I seems like the prelude to a bigger move, but we can’t hope thats gonna happen, because their track record doesn’t back up that more moves are coming.
More than that, I’m getting Bregman vibes form his signing last year. Getting a player for a position it seems like we have players for already, while not addressing gaping holes

I’m in the ready to give up on Casas camp so imo first base was a glaring hole they needed to address. If Casas is able to re-establish his bat he can always rejoin the lineup at DH unless Yoshida is on a genuine heater.

Dirty – not married to Casas returning to form either.

Real question: Is this better than Suarez at third base for a few bucks more and Mayer at 2B? I guess its a “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” between Suarez and Contreras

        • DirtyWater04

I do think I like this better because Contreras is a little better defensively, and less prone to whiffs than Suarez. We already have too many guys who go up there flailing around unable to make contact with anything. so even though he has 40 HR potential he would compound that ugly issue pretty bad. If we can get 25 HR with less K’s and more hits & walks from Contreras I’d take that over 40 homers from Suarez with 200+ strikeouts.

I agree and I am as excited about Mayer as anyone. I want him penciled in for one of those spots. But he can’t play them both at the same time. Even with him factoring in extensively we still need someone else. And not Campbell. I still believe in him long term but given that they rushed him the first time he came up, I want him to earn his second and hopefully final promotion, whenever that may be, as opposed to just assuming he’s going to hold down a spot from day one again. So he can be considered the heir apparent to Story rather than Bregman, which solidifies we need to get one more infield bat this winter.

I dont speak for all Yankees fans, of course, but I’m not running Cashman out of town because there hasn’t been a signing or trade that I thought the Yankees HAD to make instead.

The Yankees are in a unique position where they have coverage everywhere should they NOT make a big move and dare I say we’d still be highly competitive. Grisham coming back could be very good should he continue his 2025 form, Ben Rice with more experience, a 30/30 guy at 2b, AARON JUDGE, a GG caliber 3b, speed at SS to start, a solid rotation even with Yarborough as the 5th starter to begin with, we already replaced Williams and Weaver at the deadline, and I legit want to see Jasson get more reps and possibly starting getting a look at Jones, etc.

Cashman not rushing things isn’t the worst. I’m willing to see this plan out. Maybe Hal is serious about not going over and tbh would it really be a bad thing to take break from the taxes?

Basically, I’m trying see passed what everyone else is doing to really understand what Cashman is doing here. It’s too easy to go look at the Sox or the O’s or Toronto to bash the Yanks, but for the first time in a bit I’m kinda trying to read the roster more and I’m not panicking at all.

On your side here Sal but Yanks are already in tax tier 3 for ‘26. There’s no break in tax coming soon.
I think they’re in a staring contest with Boras over Belli right now – Boras keeps saying that it’ll take 7 years and $200 mil. Sounds reminiscent of pre ‘23 when he wound up with what 3 years and $80ish? And then Cubs traded him to NY and they paid it down a bit.

Correct, I meant breaking through to the next tier (the Cohen tier!), which would further cost them. I should have wrote that better, but either way I get Hal’s logic. We often brush this off, i already did this offseason, but yeah it’s lost money.

I would like Bellinger back, but if he doesn’t I won’t cry either. Sometimes I enjoy seeing what the response is to losing out. Like last year with Soto? I thought we came away better not sinking that money into him.

It’s a nice complimentary pick up. You get a veteran, right handed bat. They still haven’t picked up the #2 or big bat they said they were going to get. They are going to push Gray as a #2 and Contreras as a ‘big bat’ but he isn’t going to hit 30+ HRs.

Unless now this opens them up to trading some of the young depth to go get the big pieces they are still chasing Toronto and maybe Baltimore with their improvements in the AL East. Right now the Yankees and Red Sox look like they will be chasing in the #3 spot on paper.

If the cost is cheap enough, like Amador or one of the middle relievers like Zach Agnos or Luis Peralta, then maybe. But I have a feeling the cost might be more than that. And I just don’t see him as worth it.

It looked from the outside that the issues for some of the Cards pitchers was that WC was no YM, particularly on the game planning/pitch calling side of the game. YM knew every player on the fields weakness in the batters box and it was evident from the days when he took the mask from Matheny. Flaherty was the most vocal if I recall correctly. I respect WC for the way he handled the absolute public belittling Marmol presented then backtracked from a week later. It was confusing to watch as a fan. For someone who’s emotions run hot like WC’s it had to be difficult to handle that.

Contreras’ bWAR has seen a straight-line downtrend since 2021: 4.2-3.8-3.3-3.0-2.5. Injuries and age have piled up. I don’t expect the trend to reverse in his age-34 season. In fact, I think he might have trouble getting 2.0 bWAR in 2026.

At least it’s not a ton of money and the Sox don’t have great alternatives at 1B. But this trade doesn’t move the needle that much.

Uh, what? He didn’t switch positions until 2025. Most of the downtrend is just normal aging and the injuries that come with it. The Sox are hoping that the Wall will rejuvenate him. Maybe and maybe not. I’m not sold on trend reversals at age 34. But it’s not an onerous long-term financial commitment.

You might also considering the declining lineup he was in…this red sox team will have much better hitters overall.

It’s not entirely due to the position switch, but it is a factor, along with losing time to injury. He played in 125 games in 2023, with 97 at catcher, for a 3.3 bWAR.. He only player 84 games, 50 at catcher, in 2024, yet still had a 3.0 bWAR. That lost time, and fewer games at catcher, accounts for the 0.3 drop in bWAR from 2023. But though he played 137 games in 2025, most in the last 3 years, his 120 games at 1B, instead at catcher, is why he had only a 2.5 bWAR. Clearly position was a factor.

He will have a much better lineup around him, the green Monster to aim at and the sox need a mix of veterans to go with their youth. They have one of the youngest teams in baseball. Good pick up from sox and I did like Dobbins, but we have plenty of pitchers similar to him and they cant all play….

2 years of Contreras at $36 million…roughly the same as what the White Sox just spent on Murakami. And the Red Sox only had to give up Dobbins and some pitching depth? I think that’s a win at least on paper right now. Contreras should still have quite a bit left in the tank for the next 2 years. And this still keeps the Red Sox financially available for Bregman or Bichette. An extremely solid move.

2B – Campbell – Remember him? The Red Sox paid him $60 million for 8 years. He is going to play.
2B – Rafaela – He played very well in 24 games there last season
3B – Mayer – At least until Story gets hurt

Campbell isn’t starting the season as a starter, and probably won’t start the season in the majors. He’ll probably be back up at some point this year, playing some second or first. I think you’ll see he him more full time in 2027. The Red Sox rushed him and they don’t want to do that anymore.

No. The Red Sox are not putting one of the best defensive CF full time in the infield.

Mayer will either be staring at an infield position that the Red Sox don’t address, or will be a multi-position utility position off the bench. He could even start in the minors, if the Red Sox address the infield enough and bump him out of full time at bats.

I didn’t say Campbell would START, I said he would play. Cora said that they expect him to be “in the lineup”.

Anthony in LF, Duran in CF, Abreu in RF

All 3 will be full time OF. Breslow even made it a point to say that they won’t be platooning Abreu anymore.

Rafaela will play somewhere. Where do you think it will be if it won’t be in the OF?

Cora said that Mayer will be in the mix at 3B and SS. He is a much better source than you are. Sorry if that offends you, but its true.

I’m not offended at all, the manager is absolutely a better source than me 🙂 why attack? Come on, let’s be civil.

I think I assumed you meant Campbell as starting 2B based on how you phrased it. From what I just read about him playing in winter ball right now (playing for the Red Sox bench coach), they’re having him play more OF. It seems like that or 1B may be his future, not 2B. For the time, he may be able to work his way onto the roster in a Refsnyder-like role.

You basically said what I said about Mayer. He’ll be in the mix in those positions. I like Mayer and hope he gets a chance to start. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Bregman, Mayer, Story, Contreras infield. If those guys stay healthy, that’s a solid infield.

And I stand by what I said about Rafaela. Opening day, he’s the CF. The Red Sox have a glut of outfielders and it makes no sense for them to keep them all with Anthony ready to be a full time starter. I would rather see them take Abreu (who I love as a player) and use him to re-stock our minors/depth, or address the bullpen.

Spot-on on all 3, imo. Campbell is not close to the majors right now. Rafaela is perhaps the best CF I’ve ever seen.

I’d like to see Mayer start at 3rd and stay there forever, but a 3B like Suarez might be easier to obtain than a 2B.

Its harder to justify moving an OF that has a 6.7 WAR average the last two seasons. No one can argue against the fact that Duran is a better overall player.

Rafaela started as a SS/2B which is why he filled in last season at 2B. With Anthony, Duran, and Abreu playing every day in the OF it will be harder to find time for Rafaela in the OF. I am sure he will play there some.

You will get no argument from me if you say that Rafaela is the better fielding CF between him and Duran because he definitely is, but that does not always determine who plays the position.

With Cora and Breslow stating that Abreu will no longer platoon in RF and Anthony will start in LF, that leaves the choice of Duran or Rafaela in CF and Duran wins.

Cora said that Campbell will be in the lineup. We can argue and debate about it here, but Cora is the guy that makes the decisions. That doesn’t mean Campbell will start the season at the keystone on opening day, but its more than just a suggestion by a keyboard jockey in an online baseball discussion board,

Rafaela was an infielder first. If he is playing CF that means a better overall player is sitting. Do you really think Duran will sit for Rafaela?

I believe Duran ultimately gets traded. We can argue about whether or not that’s the right move. And this only my opinion. But I think Duran’s 2024 season may be an outlier. He’s certainly capable of being a 4-5 WAR player annually, but I just don’t see him putting up another 2024 season on an annual basis. I think the Red Sox will look at their outfield depth, use Duran as a center piece to get something big back, and have an outfield of Anthony in LF, Rafaela in CF, and Abreu in RF. This will leave Mayer at 2B.

But I think this all hinges on Boston getting a 3B. If they don’t, Mayer will slide over, and you’re right, Rafaela will man 2B.

Duran’s offense in 2025 took a step back, but so did his defense, and starting him in CF on a regular basis worries me.

Regarding Campbell, everything I’m reading says the Red Sox view him more as an outfielder now, specifically a left fielder. He’s still so young, and there’s nothing to say he won’t play a bit of 2B, but I don’t think that’s their plan with him. From MassLive a few days ago:

“Campbell hasn’t played the field yet but the club expects him to get reps in left field, which is Boston’s preferred position for him moving forward. It’s less likely he sees any time in the infield this winter…

Cora mentioned that the club still has confidence Campbell can play second base, a position that remains open halfway through the offseason. But the Red Sox acknowledge Campbell’s future is likely on the grass.”

          masslive.com/redsox/2025/12/why-red-sox-are-fine-i…

Time will tell. We still have about 2 months until spring training, and a lot can happen between now and then. And I think the lineup you see today can still be a lot different in 2 months.

Casas will spend most of the year in AAA (barring emergency) because he needs to show that he can hit and that he can stay healthy over a whole season. He has zero trade value this offseason.

Look at the MLB off-season compared to other leagues. It’s a slog because 1/3 of the teams spend.

I agree with most of this, SeerMagic.

I think Wetherholt plays second. He’s been a second baseman his whole life. He played shortstop his senior year of college to become a top draft pick. He played 12 games at third this year, but that’s it. He’s mainly a second baseman.

In that scenario, Gorman stays at third (his natural position). Saggese and Fermin kind of backup everywhere. I think LF ends up being a rotational position once Noot is gone. (Maybe even waiting until the trade deadline.)

I think Herrera gets one game each series at catcher if his throwing has improved. If not, he’ll play a little 1B, maybe even LF again.

I also think Crooks eventually replaces Pages as the part-time starter. If not, one of those two will be traded as well. Bernal will end up being the starter within two years.

Marmol rarely runs the same lineup out there anyway. There is going to be a lot of mix-and-match. I think that’s why Fermin kept his 40-man spot. For a guy who some think of as “barely a big leaguer,” the dude can hit. (Same with Torres. He’s played even more positions and has a great contact tool in the minors.) Saggese, Fermin, and Torres are Swiss Army knives.

I know it is still just December, but I’m not convinced Bloom moves Donavon nor Nootbar till the trade deadline. It will probably be a mistake not to get all that you can out of the additional half season of Donavon, but as long as he stays healthy and productive, there will be a contender with an injury mid-season that will overpay to get a guy with BD’s skills. Nootbar is basically a bounce-back candidate currently that really only ever had advanced stats in his favor. The guy has got to put it together on the field at some point or he won’t even be worth a lottery ticket in return.

Good pickup for the Sox, good for Dobbins too. He will actually get 30 starts there. In Boston that would be very difficult. However this means another trade has to be coming. Casas does not have a spot anymore, romy does what he does better. And we still have too many Outfielders. Will be interesting to see what happens now. This does clear the path to sign Bichette or Bregman. That will be the only ML FA they sign. Quite sad that them and the Rockies are the only ones who have yet to do so

    A #2 starter. A #4 starter. A very good hitting and fielding 1B.

Still need a 3B but the 3 best options on the FA market are still unsigned. Lots of depth in the rotation. Could probably use another setup man.

And there’s still this outfield depth to deal from. I think there’s at least one more big move coming. I don’t see them laying out for Bichette or Bregman, but something creatively cheap could be had.

Good deal for the Sox, bad deal for Bloom. Three pitchers who don’t miss bats. But could develop I suppose.

I’d have held out for one of the lesser excess OFs or Casas as part of the deal, but he’s been ordered to cut payroll to the bone.

Does Boston have a bridge bat to take over in 2-3 years? It seems like a decent trade but if they’re expecting him to be a long-term middle-of-the-order fixture at 1B/DH, that might end up turning sour. Overall, I rate this a B+ move that turns into a C– very quickly if Boston treats a declining-profile corner bat like a foundational piece.

With all the youth and depth boston has (and had) Getting contreras and Gray just seems like a light return for what we are giving up.. Come august when injuries are popping up i think we are going to wish we had done a little better on the giving and receiving. Casas has solid 40 homer potential but he has to have a chance. Hoping for the best but i hope when they trade duran they actually get a solid #2.

The one thing Breslow can spare is pitching. They aren’t even going to feel the departure of these three. The Red Sox are loaded with pitching on the farm and they added Witherspoon, Phillips, and Eyanson in the first three rounds big arms with Kyson Witherspoon likely to start at AA Portland and the other two in High A Greenville.

Any St. Louis fans confirm? I just heard a podcast that said the local papers in St. Louis state for the first time in 25 years the Cardinals got money from MLB from the competitive balance fund. It also said ticket sales are down almost 30% since 2021. This explains a lot of trying to dump all the veterans, beyond rebuilding.

Breslow is dealing from his position of excess. Dobbins in all likelihood was going to start in Worcester when he got back but that Worcester is crazy loaded still. Fajardo is the reason real upside on this trade. He throws strikes and he misses bat with his fastball, slider, change repertoire. Dobbins likely fits into the Cardinals rotation, in fact, I expect him to be the better pitcher between Fitts and him.

Bloom is showing he’s definitely not afraid to trade prospects for big leaguers. I’m a little surprised he traded Fajardo whom he stole from Chicago in Cam Booser trade. If we look at the Red Sox pitching in Worcester it’s likely to still be Tolle, Crawford, Harrison, Sandlin, Uberstine, Drohan that’s crazy depth. It’s possible that Early is there as well but I think he wins a spot of spring training and Sandoval likely starts in the pen maybe Drohan as well.

You greatly overestimate BTV if you believe he has negative value, particularly in light of Alondos deal. Contreras is nearly the same player as Alonso – not as good as hitter, way better defender. Let’s say 80% as good, in line with projections.

His contract is 40% less and wont be an albatross for the last 2-3 years. No BS, I wouks rather have Contreras. And its not close.

He’s also a fierce competitor and a fan favourite. Won over the STL fans despite being a former Cub and a bad catcher, especially when he surprised everyone with his 1B chops.

That do ya? Or is your faith in the crappy BTV algorithm unshakeable?

I refer to BTV just to know when I’m in the ballpark, but minor league players be evaluated with an algo. And a secondary consideration is not just their value, but would they ever see the light of day. Dobbins would be an old man before his ticket number ever came up.

I have no idea where he’d be this year. Even next year, assuming Gray and Sandy are gone, there will only be one opening for the rotation, and 7-8 guys trying out for that one spot.

It’s completely common sense that BTV gets it wrong a lot of times just from looking at some of the evaluations. It severely undervalues larger contracts no matter what production is attached to them, and that’s a failure of the model.

The biggest problem with the model is it doesn’t take into account the reality that the really consistent high-producing players are scarce and have a lot less risk attached to them than unestablished prospects. That scarcity and reduction of the risk of regression adds a lot to their value, which is why teams pay the contracts they pay. The model dos not at all take either of those things into account

Defense (big disparity) and length of contract are why the real difference is not this great – i wouldn’t want the last 3/90 of that deal. And the RBI is a bit hard to gauge given Contreras has played in a bad lineup.

Interesting that Passan calls Contreras’ defense “Passable” and suggests this means Casas will “likely” be traded.

Casas has options and needs to go to Worcester to get healthy, and mash AAA pitching….trading him now would be dumb.

I read Contreras was 4-5th for DRS and OAR in 2025.

I would argue that a change of scenery will add some juice for Willson, and Fenway will lead him to hit 35-plus doubles. He might have Duran Bregman and Anthony in front of him; we’ll see if Abreu can protect him.

Finally, he hits lefty pitching, a declining art for RH hitters these days.

Been watching this guy since he came up, a lot actually. He is a solid hitter with sporadic power, usually gap to gap. He gives you fairly consistent at bats game over game over a whole season. Nice to have on any team as a complementary piece.
We were heading into the season needing a third baseman/second baseman, a true number 2, and upgraded power. Have we done that?

FYI, I have missed less Red Sox games since cable tv and the vcr was created than years I have been alive(I am not young). I rarely if ever miss the live game unless physically unable to be in front of a TV, and in that case it used to always be taped, or now, watched on MLB TV since that was created.

There are still questions on whether Casas is available opening day. Although this may be the case, there is plenty to read into where this situation goes from here now that Contreras is likely the guy this year and the next.

As for the logjam aspect, it remains to be seen how it will unfold. The team may want to platoon Yoshida at DH. His splits have struggled as he worked through those injuries. Contreras grabbing those ABs would be simple enough.

It blows my mind reading the delusional, hopium comments made by the people in these comments sections. Contreras is a “good” hitter. He is a slight upgrade to what they had. He is not the impact player that the Red Sox need. They have plenty of “good” hitters. They need a great hitter. This is probably a good business move, but not a move that will help them win more than .500 games. I’m strongly sensing that the Red Sox will not do more than what is required to get them to the .500 mark, and they are anticipating a lockout next season. It’s boring and it produces a garbage product. It bewilders me that you people still watch this slop.

Another useless trade. They don’t want to sign anyone in free agency so they will continue to burn threw prospects to make trades. It was a nice run from 2004 to 2019 where the six were top 3 in payroll and were in on every free agent. Those days are gone and we have enough evidence to show they are not coming back. They say once our top prospects make it to the majors we will spend, clearly that was a lie. I would say fire Breslow but it’s probably Henry telling him he can’t sign any free agents. I’m definitely starting to check out on this team, because if ownership doesn’t care then why should anyone else.

I think he’s going to mash in Fenway although will admit ai dont know how much if a pull hitter he is. If he pulls the ball a lot I can see him with a ton of doubles. Cardinals didnt even get a top 20 organizational pick. Red Sox got 2 borderline all stars from the Cardinals for maybe a 4th and 5th starter. financial flexibility doesn’t mean anything if you arent willing to spend and you dont get talent. cardinals have no chance of being good before those contracts are up so the savings only matter if you really think it means they will be willing to spend big in like 4-10 years.

Comments like this just completely ignore the fact that the Cardinals have needed to completely rebuild their minor league system from the ground up. Just because the savings won’t be going into contracts does not mean the savings are insignificant in any way, shape, or form. All of that money is going back into prospect development and evaluation, which absolutely matters in today’s game. The Cardinals are making a conscious decision to be terrible at the major league level in order to be more consistently competitive in the future and that’s a big deal for the franchise.

I’m a fan of the Cardinals so I hope you are correct. At the end of the day, to contend at the big level you need talent. It has to come from somewhere. trade, draft, development, free agency. if some spending on organizational structure and strategy helps a couple of those then great. but it’s also okay to be a little skeptical of the old trust-the-process kool-aid. this is year 3 of rebuilding to the fans, even if its only year 1 of a rebuild under some new leadership.

This trade was sitting on ice while teams waited for Murukami to sign. He goes 2/$34M and 12 hrs later this trade happens with the money going to the Sox making this essentially the same monetary deal. You know what you’re getting in Contreras though.

I like the deal and the long term flexibility the roster has. Get a 3B with 20+ hr power and the line up is set. That said only 4 3B had over 25 hrs last yr, 8 over 20. Most aren’t moving teams even with a trade. Maybe there’s a deal for Riley or Bohm if those teams want to push for Suarez.

There are enough options in the org to sort out 2B internally and it can be solved in season if not.

Before you all beat up on me for this comment…. I know Contreras is a 1B/DH…. but at least he can be an emergency Catcher… so they don’t waste a roster spot on a 3rd Catcher like they did in September. With that said … only as an emergency basis or in extra frames if you need it to help win a game.

      Stone him immediately!!

Kidding, I completely agree. 3rd catcher in a pinch or extra innings. The team has a lot of multi position versatility which enables more creative management. Having a team of guys that can move around the diamond is the baseball version of basketball teams with a roster full of 6’6” to 6’9” wings. The team has adaptability and flexibility.

No to Bregman, too old for a 6 year deal- he was crazy for walking away from 80 m$ in just 2 years
