The Phillies and J.T. Realmuto have an agreement in place to reunite on a new deal. It’s reportedly a $45MM guarantee over three years for the CAA Sports client, with incentives worth $5MM annually. The Phils have a full 40-man roster and will need a corresponding move to make this official.
At the beginning of the offseason, it seemed likely that Realmuto and the Phils would get back together. That has come to pass but there were some notable twists and turns along the way.
Back in early December, it was reported that the Phils had an offer out to Realmuto. No specifics of that offer were reported but it the two sides were apparently far enough apart to explore other options. Just over a week later, it was reported that the Phils were looking into other potential solutions behind the plate. An even more ambitious pivot came to light in January. With infielder Bo Bichette unsigned, the Phils seemed to genuinely pursue him. Various reports suggested that if the Phils signed Bichette, they would have to move on from Realmuto and third baseman Alec Bohm.
That appears to check out from a financial point of view. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Phils thought they were going to sign Bichette for $200MM over seven years, an average annual value of $28.57MM. Realmuto was projected for something around $15MM annually, with MLBTR predicting him for a $30MM deal over two years at the beginning of the offseason. Bohm is going to make $10.2MM in his final season of club control.
Essentially, it seems the Phils were willing to spend another $15MM to $20MM on upgrading the lineup. Signing Bichette and then trading Bohm would have added about that much. But the Mets swooped in and have an agreement in place with Bichette, a three-year deal with huge average annual values and opt-outs after each season. That not only deprived the Phillies of Bichette but also landed him with a division rival. Barely an hour later, the Phils have quickly pivoted to the more straightforward path, bringing back their longtime stalwart behind the plate.
Though it is somewhat straightforward to bring back Realmuto, this is still a notable commitment. Realmuto turns 35 in March and will therefore play this deal through his age-37 season. There’s decline risk with any position player that age but particularly with catchers. Every backstop in the majors in 2025 was in his age-36 season or younger, except for Martín Maldonado, who is now retired. Realmuto was already one of the oldest full-time catchers in the league last year. Salvador Perez is one year older but even he has started to spend more time at first base or as the designated hitter in recent seasons.
Realmuto and Perez have been the two workhorses of the position over the past decade-plus. Dating back to the start of the 2015, Realmuto has appeared in 1362 games and Perez 1304. However, Realmuto actually appeared as a catcher in 1,252 of those contests whereas Perez only put on the gear for 980. That kind of workload can be an argument for or against Realmuto. His ability to shoulder a massive workload relative to his peers is right there in the numbers but that could also be the very thing that works against him as he ages.
The signs of decline are already somewhat apparent. At the plate, Realmuto has clearly fallen from his peak. From 2018 to 2022, when he was in his late 20s and early 30s, he produced a combined .272/.339/.476 batting line. That resulted in a 118 wRC+, indicating he was 18% better than the league average hitter for that span. Over the past three years, he has slashed .257/.315/.421 for a wRC+ of 100. In 2025, he hit .257/.315/.384 for a wRC+ of 94. That’s still pretty good for a catcher, as backstops generally hit about 10% worse than the league-wide average, but the trend lines aren’t great.
There are yellow flags on the defensive side as well. Outlets like FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus and Statcast ranked him as an above-average pitch framer from 2018 to 2022 but with negative grades over the past three years. His grades for controlling the running game and blocking pitches haven’t declined as consistently across all out those outlets but there has been a bit of downward creep. Statcast, for instance, had him as a subpar blocker in the past two years.
Taking the Perez route and coming out from behind the plate isn’t a likely in Philadelphia. As mentioned, Realmuto’s offense has been declining, which wouldn’t be ideal for him if he were at first base or in the designated hitter slot. The Phils don’t have those opportunities available for him regardless, with Bryce Harper locked in at first base and Kyle Schwarber essentially a full-time DH. Harper is signed through 2031 and Schwarber 2030.
All those concerns are presumably things the Phillies are aware of, thus explaining why they toyed with the idea of a future without Realmuto. But despite all the concerns, Realmuto was still the best free agent catcher available this winter and the Phils clearly needed to do something. Rafael Marchán and Garrett Stubbs are on the roster but neither would have been an ideal everyday option behind the plate. Stubbs has 203 big league games under his belt with subpar offense and defense. Marchan’s big league numbers are a bit more encouraging but he has just 82 games under his belt.
In the end, the Phils are sticking with the devil they know. Though there are real concerns in the numbers, there are also the unquantifiable things to consider with a catcher. The Phils have seen Realmuto work with their pitchers for seven years now and presumably are happy to have him continue doing that for another three years.
It appears the 2026 Phillies are going to look a lot like the previous versions of the team, with a few modifications. Adolis García will take over in right field, with Nick Castellanos likely to be jettisoned at some point. Ranger Suárez is gone, having an agreement in place with the Red Sox, but the Phils will hope Andrew Painter can step up to replace him on the pitching chart. Justin Crawford will hopefully take over center field. Their two big free agents this winter, Schwarber and Realmuto, have been re-signed.
That leaves the Phils with the same core, which can be argued to be good or bad going forward. It has certainly been a good core in the past. They’ve won at least 87 games in four straight seasons. They made the World Series in 2022 and won the National League East in the past two campaigns. But Schwarber will turn 33 this year, as will Trea Turner and Aaron Nola. Harper’s already that age. Zack Wheeler turns 36 this year. As mentioned, Realmuto will be 35 in a few months. Everyone in that group is signed for at least two more seasons but often far more.
Spending so much money on that veteran core has pushed the payroll up. RosterResource estimates the Phils to have a $281MM payroll and $317MM competitive balance tax figure. The annual breakdown of Realmuto’s deal hasn’t yet been reported but the CBT won’t be impacted by that, since that number is calculated based on AAV. The Phillies are in the highest possible realm of taxation, both because they have paid the tax in at least three straight years and because their CBT number is above the top threshold of $304MM.
They were just under that top line coming into today, facing a 95% tax rate. The Realmuto deal has blown them past it, well into the area where they pay a 110% tax on new spending. This will therefore add roughly $15MM to their tax bill this year on top of the money going to Realmuto himself.
Realmuto had a fairly quiet market but was connected to the Red Sox at one point. With Realmuto and Danny Jansen signed, the top remaining catcher free agents include Victor Caratini, Jonah Heim and others.
Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb of The Athletic first reported the two sides were close. Bob Nightengale of USA Today and Robert Murray of FanSided reported the agreement was in place and provided specifics of the contract. Photos courtesy of Kyle Ross, Jayne Kamin-Oncea, Imagn Images

And… nobody is shocked
That’s because we utilized proper lockout/tagout procedures.
Well done
@Enjoy We appreciate that u are following ECPL guidelines and control.
Once Bichette was off the board, they spent elsewhere.
@LordD99
Ya, once Bo signed it was all but assured. The perfect example of the other shoe dropping.
A lot of stuff has started moving now across the league thanks to Tucker. I’d expect Bellinger soon back to the Yankees or a surprise swoop in from the Blue Jays or Giants who don’t like missing out on free agents.
The only question was would it be two or three years. Realmuto got the third year at a time period when it felt like money had wings.
@MLB Id say the early extensions trend has led to said wings. These free agent classes are thinner and those at top of free agent classes have benefited alot.
Im curious if teams were anticipating this as more and more of these extensions were being signed.
Ive got to say, I thought Braves were brilliant when they locked up so much young talent. Now it makes me wonder to what extent it has hindered their current free agent spending and when its all said and done was it the right path. At the time it was, but when other teams increasingly followed it no longer was path less taken.
Given their overall spending, I think Atlanta made smart moves.
Injuries to Acuna, Albies, Riley, Strider and Reynoso are enough to slow any team down.
Im talking about the current offseason, Im not going to judge last offeason in hindsight.
This offseason they seem limited by a desired budget and cant necessarily blame them considering the AAVs of top free agents. ATL however is one of catalysts driving a trend to lock more players up early which now is having an impact by decreasing availability of talent in free agency. Mets and Phillies have sought upgrading their rosters. Not to mention other NL teams one in specific. Yes ATL gains some if they get healthy, but other teams have that same benefit to varying degrees.
I do think what they did was smart especially at the time. W8th more teams having adopted that approach some of those savings are just being paid out by inflated free agent costs.
From reports, the Phils had both two and three year offers out there to JTR for a while now. The three year was in the 12-13M AAV range, so the last push probably involved the tweak to $15M plus the incentives.
Everyone is bummed about Bichette; so am I. But he is not a $42M per year guy; not even close. And JTR on the decline is still worth a lot to this team – the pitchers would have been fit to be tied if we lost him. Understand that he is now an 8 hole hitter that should catch 110-120 games max but is priceless as a game manager and pitcher-whisperer even now.
Also understand that it is not easy for fading stars to take such a large cut in AAV. Molina got a 3 / $60M in the same age gap range as this deal for JTR, and then take a look at their respective WAR from ages 31-34 seasons. It should help to temper frustrations.
Well I wouldn’t say nobody. On a brewers Facebook page I saw someone say they read the brewers were rumored to be signing him. So, that guy is surprised. Though, he really shouldn’t be lmao.
William Contreras > 2026 version of Realmoto
Its not even close. Realmuto has been junk for 2 full seasons now and Contreras has been king for 2 seasons. Where did this guy get the ideal that the Brewers would want to significantly downgrade??? Some people have no ability to see change; they think because Realmuto was once great that he always will be great, and that just aint so…
Consolation prize.
Phillies were like: “Let’s real in Realmuto, cause nobody wants to Philly after getting rejected by Bo Bichette”
sweet deal for jt
seems like alot of years/$ for 35 yr old catcher coming off the worst season of his career
Lol. Huge letdown after Bichette. Whatever. Good enough for another early exit.
Bichette was the move and to seem him as a Met hurts.
Why not resign Bader now too?
Watch Bohm get traded and them sign Geno Suarez to play 3rd.
Unless they rick out a big trade for a big name or sign Bellinger who is the last big bat left but a lefty bat, bring up the young guys and hope we didn’t miss out on trading them last deadline and they can play. I’m talking everyone from Miller to painter to Crawford to Wood.
I think Bader just looks like a Philly and I think they should have resigned him already.
They need to save salary somewhere and cf goes to the rookie
An unproven rookie, that I hope is great but if he’s more Ben revere than anything else, I’d like to have a proven guy other than marsh to not miss a beat. I’d rather give Bader centerfield put marsh in left and then allow Crawford to split time with what we hope is going to be a bounce back player after two rough seasons in Garcia, and if Crawford proves that he can be the guy then he might get left field full-time. Like I said, I hope it all works out for them. This is a run back that I don’t think anyone’s excited about.
Bichette’s deal was so stupid. I don’t mind not going that high. But it sucks he went to a rival. I fear the Phillies wasted this core. They tried to pounce, but never got the right handed bat they needed.
You fear? They wasted Wheeler/Harper. Middleton is a fraud don’t care. They aren’t good enough to beat the dodgers now the Mets.
Omg..you sound like me now…you are usually so optimistic!
This is so much like the decline of the Manuel led team. Hanging on to everyone too long until the pitching broke down and couldnt carry them…but that team at least won a championship.
I like these guys, but I ain’t got a decade to wait for another run….
Middleton is not a fraud. They made a great offer to Bichette that he verbally agreed too. The next day, the spurned Cohen offered an insane deal that was too good to reject. Bichette never went back to the Phillies (nor should he have to). Middleton tried. He’s no fraud. Mets spent stupid money.
Stop it. It’s a make or miss league, a crapshoot. Phillies should have beat Arizona at minimum and that’s on the hot/cold players. outside the Dodgers.
The only thing that can not have history repeat itself is if guys like Painter, Crawford, Miller and Wood are legit impact making young players that are key contributors, mlb ready young stars and bring youth and life to a team that without that is destined for 2012 to 2018 baseball.
Bichette did him a favor.
Bichette Bobby Bonilla’d the Phillies. If you remember when Bonilla became a free agent after the Pirates he made 2 visits. One to Philly and I was probably 11 or 12 and was so excited. It was all over Action News. The next day or so, he went to the Mets and they signed him.
This could also be one of those Mets deals that pays for a name and doesn’t pay off for the price. As a Phillies fan I’m hoping. Regardless, Bichette will be greated warmly at Citizens Bank Park.
They made a fair offer to bichette, the Phillies don’t do opt outs, see ya bo.
Opt outs are are not good biz for many of these deals.
Bohm has very little value, except to the bottom-feeding teams. He’s just not that good.
Bohm>Schmidt IMHO
At their current ages, probably.
@Petes
Bohm woukd be a good fit for the Yanks. What do the Phillies need?
Phillies should just keep Bohm for 2026 and hope Miller is ready in 2027.
Miller may be ready now.
Time to find out.
Bichette can out in one year.. likely too unless he fails
@FTA
If he fails, he isn’t going anywhere.
Not going to “opt out” for the lockout/strike year
when teams will be watching every dollar.
I think the Phillies will be fine, they’ve just been unlucky in the playoffs recently.
Their pitching staff is much deteriorated and not getting younger either. I think they may take a big step back this year.
Depends how good Painter is really and if Nola can come back to his career averages.
Not so.
Jesus Lazardo is 28 and was acquired from Marlins
Christopher Sancez is 29
Aaron Nola is only 32
Zach Wheeler their oldest starter is only 35
Andrew Painter is only 22
That is a very competitive, youthful starting staff that is getting better, not deteriorating.
Natural for him to stay in Philly.
Dominos falling fast now.
Yeah, people like other pizza places.
This was one re-signing I fully expected.
Had to be done to keep ahead of challengers. Cohen on a rampage and likely to keep adding much needed pieces
My 6th correct pick in the FA contest.
Killin’ it!!
Yeah I’m so bad at this game
3/$45, Passan just broke on Pat McAfee now
There we go.
Fully expect the Mets to snag Valdez…maybe Bellinger as well.
well I’m hoping…
Not a chance. One way or another, Belli is going back to the Bronx. The short RF fence beckons.
The pre-cohen Mets could have signed Realmuto in 2019. The brain trust thought he was too expensive and then flushed $60 million down the toilet signing McCann.
Kind of a slow day. Anything else going on?
Running it back baby
Realmuto > fakerolek
Feels refreshing to see a team outside of LA & NY get a headline.
Add Toronto this year.
Yeah poor Philly only has the Schwarber deal this year and Trea, Bryce, Wheeler as previous big free agent deals.
Not shocking me this time. Free agents are falling down and know the catching market is too. Love this signing for the Phillies. Sets a clearer mark for re-signing Caratini.
What, the Dodgers didn’t need him as their back up catcher for a cool 3/$120 m?
And my pants… remain down because I haven’t left the stall, this toilet remains unflushed. Lack of news, JT is turning 58 in February, are we really sure he’s the answer behind the plate?
If he’s still playing at 58, I’ll be very impressed.
Other options?
Yes. The Sox in their dynasty kept Varitek even when his arm was a rag. The Phils can make do with jays tools that still work. He was fine in back half of 2025. Maybe he’ll be the 2B in 2028?
As a Mets fan, I love this. An aging declining catcher gets 15 million.
This fits the Phillies to a tee, let’s basically run out the same roster and coaching staff for 5 straight seasons and expect different results. I love JT and he is the best catching option because Marchan can’t hit. I don’t think Bichette would have made that much of a difference on this roster.
They will all grow old together.
And everyone missed Bichette and everyone got JT right!
No change on leaderboard
Good to see the reunion, my contest picks needed it.
Tucker really cleared up that market, huh?
So we’re on Bellinger watch now…
Now it feels like actual offseason dominoes.
Was thinking it would be better for us to forget JT. Sign Caratini, platoon him with Marchan and if it doesn’t work out, trade at the deadline.
You need another outfielder since I’m not sure we have any sure-thing starters right now. Belli way overpriced. Don’t expect bader to replicate 2025 but he’s an option, could look at andujar or grichuk.
Also shakeup infield with trade of bohm/stott or at least give them competition. Arraez, Rengifo, Moncada?
Platoon Caratini behind Marchan?
A very stupid statement. Also, Caratini if going to platoon is not favoring Philly.
The Phillies ain’t getting any younger. Gotta wonder when Father Time is gonna come knocking in Philly.
This is what the Phillies do. Remember a couple of decades ago when Ruben Amaro Jr. locked up everyone to long-term deals? Sure it led to 6 straight playoff births and a pair of World Series appearances (one championship) but the several years of terrible teams to follow
About $5m too much for the out year but glad to have him back. Need a starter to hold down months 1-3 and a resolution on Casty and the bulk of offseason work is done.
The big free agents are falling down. I’m predicting the next ones. I’m going to bet Caratini signs soon, and so does Bassitt.
Had to sign JT. Otherwise the ball would roll all the way to the wall behind the plate
As the dominos fall, if you were the Yankees, would you increase your offer, wait for bellinger to take it, or withdraw it?
the market is telling us they have to pay up. but shorter terms are in vogue.
Withdraw and watch him squirm
@Mikenmn
I’m wondering if Bellinger is revising his demands for a short term, high AAV deal, maybe with an opt out or two. Seems to be the current fad. He’s still young enough to cash in after a 2-3 year deal expires or opts out after another decent season.
Fair point. The problem Bellinger has is that his peak performance isn’t worth, say $45 AAV per for three years.
You and I, both reasonable people, believe that. Bellinger just has to convince one front office that he is though. He has rebuilt the majority of the doubts teams had about him prior to his resurgence with the Cubs. Who knows what a face-saving organization would be willing to pay and he’s the best available “right now”
Bellinger’s suitors are dwindling by the minute and it sounds like the Yankees have made multiple offers already. At this point Cashman can sit tight and wait for Bellinger to accept one the many offers he’s already given him instead of trying to outbid himself
@Rsox
I imagine other suitors would enter the bidding though, those on the periphery seeing if they can snag the best position player remaining at a reasonable market price. To seal the deal, Yanks are gonna have to pony up a little more or longer term. Belli could save face with a shorter term option.
Who’s really left though? The Giants? They seem more interested in a Second Baseman. The Blue Jays? Consolation prize for losing Tucker, who they didn’t really need anyway? Play Barger every day and you might get better results. The Red Sox? Not in. The Angels? Probably not after getting Lowe. The Mets? Probably not after just signing Bichette. Unless a team comes out of nowhere a return to the Yankees is the likely outcome for Bellinger
@Rsox
Agree that Yankees are likeliest outcome. However, if they rest on their current offers though, after watching the market just blow up for Tucker and Bichette deals (AAV, not number of years), the Yankee’s reported offer of 5/155 seems small in comparison. Any of the Giants, Jays, Angels, Cubs, etc. could see a play to snag a lefty hitting, 30 homer, defensively versatile, (“only”) 30 year old.player for a 2-3 year deal. Agree though, Yankees are the destination, but I think they’ll budge to get it done.
The NYY have already gone well beyond “a reasonable market price”. No one is going to swoop in to drastically overpay Corey!
Short term high AAV’s are a bet that 2027 is played mostly in full. And I’m not shocked that Owners aren’t biting on the long term ones in light of the fact that 2028 and beyond might have entirely different rules
At the end of the day Middleton is a fraud and only cares about getting to the playoffs. Period, needed Bo to change and he didn’t.
I can’t get mad at any GM that refused to beat paying Bichette more than $42 mil per. That’s just absurd, especially when you have to allocate money to Shwaby, JT and others.
Belling to the cubs 11 years 700 million
Please no. Don’t tempt the universe by saying such vile things.
3 years, is just flatly dumb…..but, it is what it is….look forward to the same line up and roster in 27′ with maybe one internal addition Aiden Miller.
DD is not a creative guy…
DD has been very creative his whole bb career.
Were you one of the posters talking about the Phillies failed rebuild
and demanding another “tear down” the ballclub to the studs
before Dave Dombrowski hit the stage in Philadelphia
and worked his majic on the dying corpse of the Phillies rebuild?!
It was all over the Phillies and National baseball media.
Dr Dombrowski, somehow saved the patient and gave him a limo
ride to the World Series.
How soon they forget!
Bichette signing with Mets appears to have opened the door for Realmuto being re-signed
Compared to other FA signings Realmuto’s seems to be a team friendly contract
$15 million per is a lot better than $57 million or $42 million. Plus if you pay Bo $42 million you know Harper is coming with his hand out…
Quick spin. Do not land BO. Sign JT….. Who gets F. Valdez, Z. Gallen, and E. Suarez?
Valdez—Mutts
Gallen—Giants
ESuarez—Reds
The reds aren’t gonna sign anyone
Three years for a soon to be 35 year old catcher in decline??? Yikes!!
There they go again, bidding against themselves and the fans get gouged
Horrible decision by Phillies.
42m a year? Come on. Only 2 teams would even think of offering Bo that. It’s stupid money.
So will Marchan get more time behind the plate with Real doing more DH and 1B?
Guess we’re just running it back.
Honestly, just go sign Bellinger idk. They usually will go up on years, just give him 7 or 8 years and this should be over. Shouldn’t have to do 37M if it’s a longer deal.
Need to do something otherwise wth is the point with the Dodgers landing Tucker.
Uugghhh. Too much for too long.
Sort of forced or otherwise the Phillies had nobody behind the plate except maybe Caratini if he was still available. If the Phils don’t demand a ridiculous 132 games as catcher from Realmuto, as they did in 2025, he might put up a lot more respectable numbers with the bat.
Who knows? Maybe they’ll now sign Caratini as the backup.
Most free agent contracts are overpays and the last few years
production is down.
It goes with the current structure of these deals.
As a met fan, I love this
As a baseball fan, the phillies gave realmuto a 3 year 45 million contract?
Who were they bidding against? Hes old and declining
The mets were desperate and signed bichette woth ridiculous money but the phillies got desperate and overpaid an old declining catcher instead.
$15mm ain’t what it used to be (in MLB)
Bo Bichette becimes the next JD Drew…
Bo would’ve blocked Aiden Miller…
Better to see what Aiden Miller can do.
Other deals will come along.
3 year deal seems pretty bad
Mets won this for sure for 2026, but with a near inevitable 2027 lockout looming, they (and the Dodgers with Tucker) could be paying a boatload of $ for one season and an optout followed by a reengineered contract once play resumes in 2028.
Considering what Realmuto has done for the organization, $15 million a year for 3 years with an additional $5 million a year in incentives is fair. Some think he won’t have value by Year-3, but no one knows what the Phils will look like by then. For that matter, no one knows what the Phils will look like by July.
If the Phils are not atop the NL East come this year’s trade deadline, there could be widespread changes. Thomson could be gone, Mattingly could be in charge, and Schwarber’s large contract could be traded away.
Considering the Braves should be healthy and competitive in 2026, the Mets should be competitive because of better balance and consistency, and the Marlins and Nationals should continue to mature and improve, a lot can happen to the Phillies by July. If Schwarber is moved, the Phils could move to a DH-by-committee which would extend Realmuto’s career.
Of course, there is a lot the Phils could and should do before the season starts. Impact infielders like Ketel Marte and Nico Hoerner are still available by trade, and outfielder Harrison Bader is still unsigned. Also, the Phils still have the chance to make peace with Castellanos and have him move to left field, either by himself or in a platoon with Marsh. This makes more sense than paying another team $17 to $20 million to let him play for them.
The Phils should also get off Bohm’s back already and let him just play his game. He has better stats than Arenado and Bregman, and only costs one-third the price of the other guys. If guys like Bohm and Castellanos were just left alone and shown some love and respect, they could be difference-makers in 2026.
Of the current players who need to be upgraded, Stott, Marsh, Garcia, and Marchan head the list.
Adding Crawford should help, and hopefully, Painter will as well.
Signing Realmuto helps the Phils more than most people realize, mainly because there were no other real catching options available. By not signing him sooner and by overpaying for Schwarber, the Phils shot themselves in the foot again and significantly limited what could and should have been major off-season additions to this year’s team.
Long post, little sense. There is zero chance that Schwarber was signed to 5 years as trade bait. For starters.
Propects are always a dice roll. Painter and Crawford could both crash and burn. This is the reason CF needs to be fortified. At least a rotation hole with a Painter flame out features substitutes and workarounds to hold the line until Wheeler is back. If Crawford fails as the A1 CF then you’ll end up with a defense first dead zone like they had with Rojas.
So they upgrade at the deadline. It’s not like the CF options in FA are great. Bader is unlikely to repeat what he did.
D Keeping the old gang together. Not many catching options in free agency. The old gang might have pouted if they didn’t didn’t bring back a fellow member of the old gang.
Have to wonder do the Phillies make any trades for a pitcher or go try for Bellinger. They really haven’t made any real upgrades.
goose, Even by resigning Realmuto, the Phils are still a weaker team now than they were when the Dodgers eliminated them from the playoffs last season. Since then, the Dodgers have improved, while the Phillies have labored to maintain the status of their quo.
It is the team that gets hot at the right time that is the last team standing.
Dodgers have a history of major injuries up and down their roster.
You never really know what personnel you will be playing with them
since close to a 3rd of their roster is cycling throught the IL list.
Not a Philly fan, they are already over the highest CBT tier anyone they sign will cost double. Even Bader will now cost about 20M a year.
Would be interesting to know what the 2nd best offer was and who offered it.
I’m a Phillies fan and I’m not at all optimistic that we can compete, especially post season, with the Mets or Dodgers.
Mets have no pitching right now, and their OF is ugly. I expect that to change soon.
Phillies have one of the better starting pitching staffs in the league.
Any team that makes the playoffs and gets hot at the end can run the table and win the WS.
Blue Jays matched the Dodgers blow for blow.
I or 2 plays go their way last Series and it wouldn have been the Blue Jays in their parade instead of the Dodgers.
Fascinating one team in division ripped off bandaid and broke up tenured core. Enduring lunatic borderline violent wrath of fans and media. Rival doing basically the opposite. Running it back with aging core.
Many of the Mets moves don’t make sense.
They made a lot of splashes in the pool, but can they swim forward?!
How many second basemen does one team need?!
and at what cost?!
Mets wanted to make some splashes and did that.
But, their moves don’t seem to come together in a cohesive whole team.
Their defense could be worse than last year.
Their starting pitching is not as good as the Phillies.
Look at it this way – the Phils were able to resign Realmuto for $15 million a year which is less than they will have to pay to trade Castellanos to another team, getting very little back in return.
Not great.
The only way out of this mess is in 2027, freeing up a lot of cash and praying hard that Crawford, Miller and Painter all pan out. Thst could give us flexibility in 2028 and beyond when our core become grandparents.
Are they releasing castellanos to make room?
Releasing him won’t open up any more money, but I’m not sure if that’s what you meant. But if you mean on the 40 man roster, I guess it’s a real possibility.
So we’re running it back in ’26. And ’27. And ’28, at least the first half. And that’s supposed to be the great plan. Ok, got it.
Love JT and while this does seem like a touch of an overpay (would have loved 3/36), I’m down with the sure thing element than any other catcher FA signing. I really hope they just sign Bader and one more 4th SP type.
brand, All in life is relative. Does Realmuto think he’s worth $15 million a year for 3 years when the Phils will be paying Schwarber $30 million a year for 5 years? While Realmuto will be busting his rear end catching most of the games for the Phils in 2026, Schwarber will be batting 4 times a game, when he’s not sitting on the bench, watching Realmuto working for a living..
He picked a bad day to resign because nobody gives a shi*. So barring a trade or something the Phillies have rolled it back. A team proven to not be able to make it past the first round is back again, but with less pitching. Nothing against JT. I’ll be happy he’s back tomorrow but for today the only thing I see is the Mets offered 42 million and the Phillies offered 28 million. So friggin unacceptable
Well, no Bichette, now the question is do they pay the asking price Boras wants for Bellinger or do the Phillies overpay the D’Backs for Marte. They can stick with Castellanos and just stick with the Realmuto signing and play the hand they are dealt now for 2026. So, they do have some choices yet.
i’m done with this team. run it back when you made the team even worse? Dombrowski needs to go
Phillies now have to find a team willing to take Castellanos off their hands – probably require Phillies paying down some of his contract
Flushing money down the toilet is a fitting end to a crappy contract. Too bad that they just can’t make him ride the bench save for a pinch hit appearance every couple of games.
The dominoes keep falling. Leftovers to come soon
Mets gave him buyout after each year of the deal. It’s doubtful anyone opts out next year with a lockout almost assured. I would look at Valdez and see what a 1 year deal costs. They can deal a starter during the season if they can’t make trades yet this off season.
If there is a lockout or strike, no one’s getting paid either way, opt out or not.
Running it back again. Yay?
Glad the Mets didn’t sign Realmuto, too! People are saying DD is losing it but I say he’ll make a big splash when the time is right
There are no big splashes left on the FA market, honestly. And the Phils don’t have the assets to pull of a big trade.
Next year we lose Nick and Walker contracts appox 40 mil.. For 1 year we can eat some money So I expect more.
I always root for catchers to get paid. Guess I am a bit biased there. 😁
It was smart being patient on Realmuto’s part. He definitely received the third year because the Phils missed out on Bichette. At least they’ll have sellable parts when the rebuild needs to be kickstarted in 2028…
