With Cody Bellinger now off the market, just one impact bat remains available in free agency: third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Coming off a 49-homer campaign in 2025, the 34-year-old seemed to be one of the premier mid-tier free agents available in free agency this winter. His market has been rather quiet for most of the winter, however. Some of that can surely be attributed to age, as teams are often hesitant about how strikeout-heavy sluggers like Suarez will age as they enter their mid-thirties. A tough stretch run in Seattle where Suarez hit just .189/.255/.428 across 53 games following a midseason trade might also raise some eyebrows. Even so, the upside Suarez demonstrated last year is tremendous and could be a game changer for a lineup in need of a boost. The question is: which team will step up to land him? A look at some of the options:
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are a somewhat obvious fit for Suarez’s services after the club missed out on reuniting with Alex Bregman earlier this month. That leaves a clear hole in the team’s infield, and Suarez is by far the best option to plug that hole remaining on the free agent market. The slugger would also offer home run power that the team lacked throughout 2025, a deficiency that led them to get involved in the markets for Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso earlier this winter. With that said, however, the team’s pivot towards signing Ranger Suarez after missing on Bregman has been coupled with a focus on pitching and run prevention. Suarez is a lackluster defender at third base already and those skills only figure to decline as he ages, so the Red Sox might prefer to pursue the trade market, where younger players like Nico Hoerner, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan could be available.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates stand out as an excellent fit for Suarez on paper. After trading Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds last summer, they have a gaping hole at third base that Suarez could fill. Adding Suarez to the lineup would also lend credibility to the Pirates’ effort to contend this year. Brandon Lowe, Ryan O’Hearn, Bryan Reynolds, and Oneil Cruz are a solid group of bats in the heart of Pittsburgh’s order, but a big righty bat to help balance those lefties out a bit more would go a long way to adding some credibility to the club’s lineup. The biggest question for Pittsburgh might be whether the sides can find common ground at all; the Pirates have already spent quite a bit more than usual this winter, and it’s unclear where exactly their limit for spending is. From Suarez’s perspective, meanwhile, he might prefer to sign with a more surefire contender if Pittsburgh isn’t the clear best offer available to him.
Seattle Mariners
Early in the offseason, it seemed likely that Suarez would be headed elsewhere after the 2025 season. That’s sensible enough, as he had just wrapped up his second stint in Seattle and struggled with elevated strikeout rates relative to his career norms both times thanks to the difficult hitting environment at T-Mobile Park. Once Jorge Polanco signed elsewhere, however, reporting suggested an openness on the part of Seattle to reuniting with Suarez, as he could serve as a bridge to the team’s up-and-coming young infielders in Cole Young and Colt Emerson. While Suarez’s past struggles in Seattle create some cause for concern, it’s nonetheless not hard to see him putting together another solid season like the one he delivered for the Mariners in 2022, when he swatted 31 homers with a 132 wRC+ despite a strikeout rate north of 30%.
Other Options
While the above three teams are the most obvious fits for Suarez’s services, they aren’t the only plausible options. The Cubs were connected to Suarez earlier this winter. The Reds are very familiar with the slugger and spent the early part of the offseason looking to add a power-hitting bat to the middle of their lineup. The Phillies tried to sign Bo Bichette early this month but came up empty in those efforts. The Padres could use a big bat for first base or DH, particularly one that bats righty to complement Gavin Sheets. The Marlins have an affinity for high-powered, strikeout-heavy sluggers (Kyle Stowers, Owen Caissie) and a hole at third base that Suarez could credibly fill. The A’s recently tried to land Nolan Arenado to fill their hole at third base, and Suarez would be a great fit at the team’s homer-friendly ballpark.
All of those potential suitors come with caveats, however. The Cubs seem far less likely to be interested in Suarez after adding Bregman, and would need to push top prospect Moises Ballesteros out of the lineup to make room for him. The Reds have seemed reluctant to spend big this winter after missing out on Schwarber. The Phillies pivoted from Bichette to J.T. Realmuto and might not have room in the budget to pursue Suarez, especially if they can’t trade Alec Bohm. It’s unclear if the Padres have the budget space to mount a credible pursuit of Suarez, either. The same goes for the Marlins and the A’s, with both teams also suffering from the same flaw as Pittsburgh as teams that could be unappealing to free agents due to their struggles to contend in recent years.
Where do MLBTR readers think Suarez will ultimately land? Will he replace Bregman in Boston, transform the Pirates’ lineup, or return to Seattle? Is there another team out there that could sneak into the sweepstakes as a dark horse and come out on top? Have your say in the poll below:

I’ll be shocked if the Pirates are willing to add another $20-$25M to get Suarez and the pitcher they’ve said they want.
They are all in for 2026, expect them to land a Wild Card spot and make some noise in the playoffs
Assumes – right now theyre closer to maybe being .500 but they’re no better than the 3rd best team in the central as it sits.
They’ve added two bats this winter to augment an anemic attack that is punctuated by Cruz and his occasional velocity-record homers between multiple strikeouts and Reynolds, who suddenly forgot how to hit last season. They really need a third stick and while I’m not a huge fan of Suarez, he moves them light years ahead of where they’d be without him
Add to this that beyond Skenes and Keller, you have a group of untested but promising kids on the mound
I’m very happy with what they’ve done this winter but it’s not enough
Okay, 3rd place can still be a wild card team! The Red Sox and Reds were both 3rd in their division and made the playoffs in 2025…I am predicting they make the playoffs and win their WC series against the Padres
Get to a short series with Skenes and company on the mound, anything is possible. Getting there is the problem. I hope you’re right
This is why it blows my mind that they wouldn’t go get one or two more bats. The pitching has a crazy high ceiling and, if it pans out, gives them a puncher’s chance against anyone but the Dodgers. And it’s mostly cheap.
You have a two or three year window here with the best pitcher in the NL and the top prospect in the game. If you don’t roll the dice now, when will you? Makes me want to hope that they can’t possibly stand pat. But they went into last year without doing much, so I’ll believe it when I see it.
Agree 100%. I believe Skenes giving his opinion about wanting to win here kicked Nutting in the pants a few months ago
Maybe he needs to speak up again
Assumes- of course it could break right for them. But I don’t see them commanding their own destiny at this point. We’re considering 0 injuries to the roster while projecting as well.
Jaorb – Going and getting 1 or 2 bars is easier said than done.
Dock – Depends on what their budget is, and how much of the future they’re willing to give up. And whether Ben can land a budget FA who outperforms for once rather than the constant stream of -1 to 1 WAR sub $5M hitters they’ve gotten the last few years.
@Dock, there’s 162 games left in the 2026 season, everyone controls their own destiny and every team is suspectable to the injury bug. we need another Pirates v. Orioles World Series with O’s coming out on top
Assumes – I partially agree. But id say in the NL West that’s a real question with the Dodgers. What im saying is the Pirates breaking .500 right now MIGHT be in their own destiny. BUT the Brewers and Cubs probably have to falter. The Pirates havent “controlled their own off-season” to the point of me saying they control their post season ambitions m. Brewers? Probably. Pirates dont have the team to speculate a post season with WITHOUT relying on the Brewers, Cubs, and maybe the Reds to falter. I just think that’s fair
Jaorb – Fair, but theyre getting a lot of names off the board and haven’t shown the ability to nab things. I wouldn’t be shocked they deal an arm. There’s many teams been looking for about the same offense they are.
They can’t afford to trade an arm at this point unless it’s one down the chain somewhere. Keller in particular now should be untouchable as his value increased when Oviedo and Burrows were dealt. Imagine the starting staff after Skenes and Keller. Promising, but largely unproven. Maybe the Phillies *will* deal Bohm for a young arm. Maybe not
The focus here has to be one more stick, but not by mortgaging your future in shy way.
Assumes is like abs down below in discussing risk. Sorry, I disagree. The Pirates are one of the few teams that can’t afford losing on a risky signing, trade or promotion to the bigs, not when they are so thin where position players is concerned. Their farm is just now starting to return to prominence after being wrecked for years, but I’m doubting any of these kids is ready to make the jump just yet
WashedUp – I agree with you. Thry need to spend some cash. Right now theyre in a very murky area. I could see 75 wins and also 82. They need some offensive juice. Gotta probably overspend on some thump at this point. I dont see the point in flipping a starter and elevating the pitching risk. Thing with Suarez is he can go on streaks and carry a team for awhile. Land Suarez and the young players break a little and yeah I can start seeing a fun team. They get a ROY out of this SS and Suarez…a healthy rotation. Yeah I see a wild card. Right now theres just too much risk.
Third place in that division does not make the playoffs. East or West maybe, but not Central.
Hmmm so 2025 Brewers Cubs Reds hmmmm
Right now they have a better shot than the Reds, mainly because they actually did something for their offense.
I know as Reds fan we wish the would bring in an upgrade to their offense with a nice bat but even without making any moves I still think they’re better than the Pirates. Keep in mind that Elly was playing injured a good majority of the season and the down years from McLain and a few others.
If the guys they have can just improve from last year and it’s very possible that they do plus a full year from Sal and this team can improve its win total from last year. The pitching should be lights out again so I think they’re better than might surprise a few people this year.
I know I’m forever the optimist but I honestly think they’re going to be good in 2026.
The Reds were one of the teams I was rooting for last year. They did a great job getting a wildcard spot.
Was a bit bummed when they had to face the Dodgers for that series. They might have done better against one of the other teams.
I am hoping the Reds or Pirates sign him. Makes either team much more exciting.
Lmao.
I hope you’re joking about the pirates. If you know anything they are once again going to be bottom feeders in 2026
Pirates can give up an unranked pitching prospect for Bohm.
I’d actually hoped for this but with Bregman and Bichette going elsewhere, figured the Phils would kill the idea
Yeah, unless Phillies trade for Donovan or sign Eugenio.
The fact that they were “all in” on a couple others this offseason suggest they’re serious and if they can get a bat that immediately make them division contenders they would as long as it doesn’t sell out the post Paul Skenes era.
Also IF they don’t trade another pitcher they are “okay” baring multiple starters getting injured. If they trade another pitcher then signing a pitcher is a must rather than a it would be nice.
They have Skenes, Keller, and Bubba/Ashcraft/Barco/Mlod who threw around 100-120 IP last year. They won’t want to push any of those four above say 150 next year, and that makes things tight even without injuries. They’ve also said they want another lefty starter. They’re probably adding one.
thats why “okay” is said “okay” 😀
Keller and Skenes are 170+ types.
Chandler, Ashcraft Barco going 130-150 is good.
Mlod, Harrington and Jones getting 50-100 of starter innings is good.
so its five plus 2 and a half going into the season assuming Jones is able to make it back.
IMO Yes, getting another arm is great but if you have to choose between offense and a back end vet who won’t be on the team in August, you get the offense.
Boston

Why Gary? Geno could hit 55 homeruns in that park. And a few doubles off the wall. A fairly inexpensive source of big power. Red Sox could use some more slug , right ?
I heard the Red Sox are looking for defense in the infield. I guess run prevention has become the priority?
Gary – Why don’t you want a 50-homer 3B who is a clubhouse leader and will command probably less than $50M/2yrs?????
Yes, offensively that formula works despite the strikeouts.
No problem one or two years in my book, but the defense is lacking as well so the Red Sox will pass on this guy. Rather go in house than sign him.
Gary – If they go in house, you are talking Hamilton/Sogard/KC/Romy ….. not exactly GG caliber infielders.
If you asked Breslow today which is the bigger priority, 3B defense or RH power, he’d say RH power.
Also having two Suarezes to go along with Contreras, Narvaez and Abreu would hugely help to build a Venezuelan pipeline.
If we’re talking third base, I’m not sure why you don’t mention Marcelo Meyer?
Everything I’ve heard says he’s the only in-house option for third base?
His defense should be very strong and his bat will hopefully come around to what the expectation is.
I think if you ask Breslow, he’ll mention infield defense over right handed power and if he doesn’t, just watch his actions and that will tell you what he would like to say.
How does having more Venezuelan players hugely help build a Venezuelan pipeline?
Every team has about the same international money and I think the Venezuelan pipeline would be hugely helped by having more or better Venezuelan scouts?
Gary – I didn’t mean oil pipeline. Same way Manny and Pedro helped get players like Ortiz and Raffy, they made the Red Sox very popular in the DR. It’s important to begin repairing the Red Sox reputation.
Ok 👍
Also, I’m pretty sure Suarez is getting 3 years and more than 70 million.
Astros – I think I originally had $75M as the high end of my estimated range, but that was before the big spending teams bowed out of the running.
None of the remaining teams are known for spending, so without a bidding war I’m leaning toward around a $50M-$60M contract. I think that’s why the Sox haven’t traded for an infielder yet, they probably believe they can sign him within that range.
I think the Pirates will pony up.
Gary – I’d be very happy with Marcelo at 3B, he is a stud at both 3B and 2B. I didn’t mention him because then the Sox would still need a 2B.
Pirates. They aren’t wasting Skenes and Suarez will help.
I was just watching Edward Florentino hit bombs. This kid has some legitimate power.
Florentino is an OF but I dont know why Pittsburgh would hold him back this season. They should jump him and Griffin, and I think Murf Gray should be on the fast track too.
The Pirates have to move this group of prospects through as quickly as possible.
Problem is, they’ve had a revolving door of kids who were much publicized but fizzled quickly here. I believe Griffin is generational and like what I’ve read about Florentino and the kid who lit it up in AA and the AZ fall league but boy, you’re asking a lot to make the jump immediately.
You don’t want another Cam Smith.
Florentino is 19 and hasn’t played above low A.
Gray hasn’t yet played in the minors.
Griffin is 19 and has played 21 games in AA.
The fact that they’re talking about Griffin having a chance at the show is already kinda crazy, but he’ll have to continue on the one-of-a-kind trajectory. There’s virtually no chance the other two sniff the majors this year. You may be buying the hype a bit too much.
Griffey Jr. hit .300/.366/.481 in his age 20 season.
I watch Florentino swing a bat, he cant be any worse than Orlando Cruz or Joey Bart.
Under the current system, teams try and time and hold players back. They should have an age, say 26, when all players become free agents. Six years control when the clock starts and the age limit.
If a player’s rookie season is declared at age 23, teams have control only in his age 24 and 25 season, regardless of when his clock was started. Player is a FA in his age 26 season.
Then you might see more young prospects at the MLB level.
Griffey was also a generational talent. Most kids would get eaten alive making a jump like that. A lot struggle when they make it up at 22 – 24, not sure why you think they’d do any better at 20.
The system is what it is. The Pirates will do what makes sense in that system rather than follow what would be best if things were the way you think they should be.
Agreed, again. I get what the No abs is saying. He’s right about the economic realities front offices play with. And while Griffey is highlighted here, let’s throw in Bonds, too.
Maybe a bit older but a guy who quickly moved through the system
I would love to believe Griffin, Florentino, Valdez, Flores are on the cusp of stardom here. I’d love to believe Seth Hernandez can challenge Skenes for the Cy Young. But this is a franchise that I hope has learned to be patient in development. And I’d believe that’s the case in how they’re bringing Termarr along.
Recent memory should illustrate how many position players got a great deal of hype but never made an impact here.
There is an advantage to be had in developing prospects quickly. Risk too, but small market teams need that risk and the advantages that come with it when it pays off.
No risk, no reward.
Moving a player up prematurely is a way to add risk and create returns without spending.
Jack Suwinski skipped AA. Henry Davis was fast tracked, despite unspectacular numbers in the minors and not having a position to field even adequately.
Both had decent early returns and looked like ballplayers when they first came up. Neither had a clue how to adjust when MLB pitchers saw their holes and started exploiting them. Both now look lost at the plate. Rushing them broke them, and the Pirates can’t afford to waste prospects.
Would those two have been better had they developed more patiently? Hard to say, but what was done was definitely a failure.
You get 6 or so years of service time for every player. And there are roster limits to consider. It’s wasteful to throw guys at the wall and see who sticks. Risk doesn’t guarantee reward.
I’d use Ke’Bryan Hayes as the obvious example of why you don’t do such a thing. In fact, this franchise was so desperate to show fans it thought it had turned the corner that it extended him and lauded him as the face of the future. Gregory Polanco would be a similar example
Hayes’ failure put the franchise back a couple years
The risk you write of is a glass-half-full perception. I’d submit that on the contrary, a franchise like this can’t afford to make mistakes by signing iffy free agents or trading away talent for what might be a big time player, but it also has to be careful where rushing players is concerned. Suwinski, Davis, Endy all fit this mold
Look, I agree that the window with Skenes will only be open a short time. That’s why I’d rather see them sign a Suarez than ruin a kid
And let’s face it, the development program for the Pirates has been a train wreck. Getting reps on the farm at least makes some sense
Adding risk creates potential.
Potential can create value.
Teams are paying for WAR but they are also paying for risk because they are crazy about value.
If teams are paying for risk and you have the ability to manufacture it inexpensively, why wouldn’t you keep the line in production?
You’re confusing the cost with the value. Teams aren’t paying for risk, they’re accepting risk because of the potential added value. And “inexpensively” is relative, as you only get so many prospects to work with. There’s a reason no team does what you’re suggesting, and that’s because the potential added value is insufficient given the risk of wasting your assets.
Not to mention that Bob Nutting is as risk averse as you can get.
You see the market defensively.
You’reprotecting asset values on assets that haven’t been developed. You are accepting risk and waiting.
I am primarily seeking potential and taking action, adding risk to create surplus value.
As a small market team you have to move fast. You are the nimble entity against the large behemoth.
That last line is certainly true
If you have a deep farm system, your logic is sound. The Pirates don’t. In fact, again, they’re just now beginning to restock.
They’ve been so poor at developing position players that perhaps it colors my optimism
This market is moving fast and is paying a premium for risk. This is a good time to make those sort of moves because the risk you add in doing so is peaking in value.
Id certainly have Griffin up. Valdez potentially late in the season. Florentino potentially.
Its a fast track but that risk is juicy.
That would be cool, the Cubs pitcher is a good prospect too.
edward is in A ball. in Rookie Ball he was a pure monster. in A ball he was just pretty good.
Edward won’t be here in ’26 in a normal non-september circumstance. AAA is a possibility. IIRC he is a pretty well rounded prospect. Not really bad at anything but not the best at anything.
The Pirates just need to suck it up and pay Suarez a 3 yr/75 mil contract. They are going to need to overpay a little to entice him to come here, but it will be worth it. He will turn the lineup from slightly below average to slightly above which is all they need with their rotation. PULL OUT THE WALLET BOB AND BEN!!
They kind of have to to some extent. It will send a very loud and clear message to the fandom if they’re not even willing to go all in even now. If they’re not willing to do it now, how can they expect their fan base to believe they ever will.
He’s also kind of a perfect fit for them. They badly need home run power and they could never afford someone with Suarez’s kind of power if he didn’t have some warts.
Despite the less than stellar parts of his game, he’s still the type of player that a fan base can get excited about. Especially one like the Pirates who have never really gotten to experience bringing in a big home run hitter through free agency before.
I remember back when the Blue Jays weren’t bringing in major free agents, I was absolutely ecstatic when they acquired Troy Glaus and an aging Frank Thomas.
Reds or Pirates.
Waffles
Reds (I hope)
No! Pirates! For certain, 825%!
^ see his handle…
Exaggerate or stay home!
AssumesFactNotInEvidence:
“Exaggerate or stay home!”
I think the Dodgers sign him and defer most of his contract to 2030. They then trade him and Bobby Miller to the Pirates for Skenes.
I’m trying.
The Reds have some good prospects coming up this season. You really want this 34 year old walking strikeout to take abs away from Sal Stewart, Edwin Arroyo, and Hector Rodriguez?
There are other stats to consider than strikeouts while batting…he was the 4th best 3B in the MLB in 2025 per FanGraphs…let the Pirates have the “walking strikeout”…that’s an oxymoron right?
The Reds have controllable prospects. Why spend all of your money on a 34 year old player in decline with a strike looming? I wouldn’t get any free agents if I were the Reds.
Well, as a walking strikeout, he’d fit right in here
How is the 4th best 3B in 2025 any sign of decline? It is not…his bWAR has gone up from 2.4 to 3.1 to 3.6 over the past three seasons he isnt in decline he is improving
Two of the three you mentioned probably aren’t in the big league mix for a while anyway.
Arroyo is at least a year away, September. Where is he going to play anyway? Same for Collier actually a year from now. The Hayes trade was idiotic with Stewart ready to come up. Rodriguez is an outfielder who probably won’t break camp either but I bet he will be up May or after if he plays well at Louisville. The Reds never rush prospects.
Sal Stewart is pretty versatile. McLain may lose some at bats to him if he doesn’t get his act together. Steer is versatile too and at this rate will be your left fielder because that position is not filled.
Meanwhile your division opponents outside the Cardinals have improved while you mostly spun your wheels except to replace your bullpen losses.
What you need is someone who is a threat behind Elly in the lineup. Elly becomes more productive because you can’t pitch around him. Steer hitting behind this guy will probably be better off too.
This kind of stand pat, oh wait for the suspects thinking is why this franchise hasn’t won a playoff series in 35 years.
The absolute truth. Actions over the long haul speaks volumes.
Hope it’s the Pirates. Probably will be the Mariners.
It will be the
Pirates
A’s are willing. That park or budget stuff is not that relevant to some of these players making the big bucks like Severino. Severino knew the A’s AAA Sacramento park was non-big league and he still went ahead and signed his big money contract 💰
Suarez going to A’s means he hits 60 homers.
Rooker hit more HRs when he played at the coliseum and so did Butler and Bleday. IDK that the AAA park is everything it’s said to be?
The fact that the Angels weren’t even mentioned – yet have a huge need for a 3B and a bat – shows where this franchise is. They are an obvious plug and play spot but Arte is too cheap to even be considered. Soooo Angel fans get 1/4 of a season of Moncada. Yippie.
They signed Yoan Moncada, that’s why.
If the Angels sign Zack Littill and add another lefty in the pen they will be competitive! Everyone in the AL West has improved…
The chili dog McGraws
If the Red Sox can get him for 1-2 years at $20m per then I think their offseason gets an ‘A’. Without an impact bat it’s a ‘B’ at best.
I swear I never see any Red Sox fans mention the Contreras addition lol. This is not the same roster as last year, where you have DFA addition Nate Lowe or Romy needing to log serious innings.
Contreras is definitely an upgrade over last year’s 1B. But he doesn’t make up for loss of Bregman and we’re looking to be better than ’25. Contreras, Mayer and Story are three fourths of a solid infield. One more big bat at either 3B or 2B hits the spot.
toast – Lowe had a .790 OPS and Romy had a .826 OPS
Contreras with a .791 OPS is not that much of an upgrade, offensively or defensively, when compared.
And if Casas returns to 2023/2024 form? No contest.
@fever
that’s true, but ultimately they went i think a combined 1-13 or so in the playoffs. i think come playoff time you want proven bats in positions where they demand higher end hitters
toast – Yeah I agree there. I wasn’t saying I’d prefer Lowe or Romy to Contreras, just that their performance last year with Boston was better than Contreras.
I think Lowe’s hot start with the Sox was a dead cat bounce, and Romy still isn’t that great vs RHP.
As for postseason, Lowe has been awful except for the 2023 ALCS.
I picked CIN in the contest. Sticking w that
I don’t get why the Red Sox would sign Suarez. They are looking for defense right now and he’s expensive and would push them above the 284 mark, meaning their 1st round is moved back 10. In addition, Paredes has better defensive marks and is cheaper, but they might get Donovan if defense is priority.
I’m sure the Red Sox would prefer Parades to Suarez. However, the price to pry Parades from your Astros is likely substantial.
I don’t see a reason why the Astros couldn’t move Correa to 2B and leave Parades at 3B with Altuve and Yordan splitting LF and DH. That seems to be their best path for the offense, unless the Red Sox are willing to trade Duran for Parades.
Because Alvarez needs DH more to stay healthy, and Altuve in left is the worst left fielder ever. It won’t take Duran though. Dana Brown is listening on Paredes, and Paredes’ isn’t going cheap yes, but again, it won’t take Duran.
Paredes is a -3 (Outs Above Average) and ranks in the 19th percentile. The Red Sox are already one of the worst fielding teams in MLB. They are trying to improve in that area. Why have all these great ground ball pitchers with no one behind them? Donovan is very good defensively, but he is a LH hitter. The Red Sox are not going to give up prospects to add him.
I say the Sox go “full throttle” on trading for N. Hoerner. He shouldn’t cost too much… some upper level prospects? He only has one year left on his contract and would secure 2B for a run at a WS.
Nico Hoerner is not going to be cheap. They want something close to what they gave up for Tucker. Nobody is offering that, so Hoerner is staying.
chicitysports.com/chicago-cubs-astronomical-trade-…
J. Duran for N. Hoerner?
Astros – Why would they sign Suarez?
1) 50 HR
2) RH bat
3) Experienced 3B
4) Clubhouse leader
5) Less than $50M commitment likely
6) Don’t need to give up talent for him
Who cares if the Sox have to pay more tax with Geno, the window is now. The goal now is to win, not save money for FSG.
Not tax, past the 284 mark, your 1st pick is sent back 10 slots. Also, he will likely require about 25 so million over 3 years, totalling 75 million. The Red Sox want more a more defensive infield, so Suarez doesn’t work. Paredes has is a bit below average, Suarez is even more below average. Who knows if he will hit 50 homers again? Also, pick going back 10 slots is in a way called losing talent.
Astros – Going from 20th to 30th in the draft is not that big a deal.
The bigger deal is losing your 2nd and 5th round draft picks and losing a million in international signing bonus pool. They didn’t care, they still signed Ranger.
Their biggest need is righthanded power, that’s a fact. Defense is less of a factor because the pitching staff is quite good, on paper anyway.
Defense is already improved with Mayer at 2B and Contreras at 1B. Not every position requires a GG caliber player.
Fever, Marcelo Meyer will play third base and they’ll pick up a second baseman. That’s the word on the street anyway.
” Defense is less of a factor because the pitching staff is quite good, on paper anyway.”
I wonder. I don’t think Craig Breslow agrees.
Gary – That’s a definite possibility, perhaps Donovan, but then the pitching better hold up because Abreu or Story will probably lead the team with just 27 homeruns.
Roman could hit 30+ if he changes his approach, but I’d rather he continue to be an OBP machine.
Astros – Which part? The pitching staff being quite good? Or defense not being a factor if the pitching staff does perform well?
When you’ve got guys like Chapman and Crochet blowing hitters away, defense is not a factor.
who should sign Suarez, it’s got to be the Pirates who will is a different story unfortunately. c’mon Ben and Bob step up and make this team a legitimate playoff contender.
if he is willing to play 2nd I can see him on a short term deal with the giants
Dunno if they could handle another big strike out guy but, definitely made me go Hmmmm ?
The Phillies need a real RH cleanup hitter. Bohm just isn’t cutting it.
Need a solid RH stick to hit between Harper n the swarbenator
Maybe adolis Garcia is that man?
it would be pretty embarrassing if the Red Sox get outbid by either Pitt or Seattle on Suarez. feels like a no-brainer deal to make. I like Mayer, but they can’t hand the reins over to too many unproven bats
What’s so embarrassing about the Mariners? They were better than the Red Sox last year.
If Seattle makes a bid for Geno, it will be for the primary DH slot, and they aren’t going to pay $20+ million for that given his 35.8% K rate at T-mobile in 2025. He would need to settle for $15M for Seattle to be interested, IMO. Being a fan favorite doesn’t win games, unfortunately.
Pittsburghs lineup looks pretty loaded with Suarez
1.Horwitz
2.Lowe
3.Reynolds
4.O’Hearn
5.Suarez
6.Cruz
7.Triolo/Gonzales
8.Bart/Davis
9.Mangum/Garcia
And imagine if Griffin pans out this year. Lineup would be nasty
Not a single .275 hitter in the bunch
Mangum should hit over .275 and Horwitz maybe,
If the Mariners don’t want to give up the prospects for Donovan, this is probably their best alternative tbh. Donovan is by far the better player, but Suarez only costs money. With that rotation, I’d be going for it though in Seattle. They have to get more offense from somewhere
Seattle reported offer of Cijntje and Montez was IMO way too steep. Cards were foolish not to accept.
As an M’s fan, I’m happy they didn’t. Lazaro Montes is going to be a beast. He has a chance to be a poor man’s Yordan Alvarez. He may never hit above .260, but his SLG will man’s up for it. Cijntje a 3/4, he would be up sooner if he focused on only throwing RH.
Why did the Cardinals not accept. Bloom probably wants Colt Emerson to be part of the deal.
I never heard reports that the Cardinals said No to anything. All I heard was the possibility of an offer that possibly had Cijntje as part of it.
That’s the offer the Cardinals wanted from the Mariners and the Mariners said no
Also need to keep in mind when considering a Donovan trade package that it’s really just for 1 year of his services, not 2, given the impending lock out. Trading both Cijntje and Montez would be especially foolish given that likelihood.
So, if I understand the summary – the Pirates need Suarez to fill a gaping hole at 3B, created when they traded Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds. And the Reds need to sign Suarez because of the gaping hole in their lineup, created when they traded for Ke’Bryan Hayes form the Pirates.
Haha. Triolo and Hayes likely put up similar WAR to Suarez, but dingerz, baby!
I think what you’re trying to say there is Ke’Bryan Hayes cannot hit.
And never could. That the Pirates signed “Mister Aloof” to a longer contract and called him “the cornerstone of the franchise” at the time is next level insanity
Pirates should make an attempt. They could be close to a version of the 1982 Harvey Wallbanger Brewers with a real ace.
Dodgers makes sense. All they have to do is trade Glasnow.
I have been strongly advocating ….the Orioles to sign Eugenio Suarez…More Power!!!! I always say and he plays the majority of the games every season
O’s could use such a man!
They have Westburg at third base and Basallo at DH if he’s not catching. Where would Geno play ?
Slide Westburg to second and figure out what to do with Holliday…I said Cf
Lefty – I really think your team should be focusing on pitching right now, not hitting.
Let him sign with the A’s and hit moon shots out of their AAA ballpark
Rsox – That reminds me of a GREAT song!
Pega Luna, Geno!

Blue Jays!
It’s hard to believe the Dodgers can’t shoehorn him in anywhere.
If only to spite the League with another obnoxious flex.
They’d only need to pay him $1 and defer the other 70 million until 2075
This.☝️
Return to Tigers!! I know it’s not happening, but i would like him in the lineup.I would let him mash in the 8th spot. Let him strike out all he wants down there.
I wish they would have done that with Marcus Thymes years ago, instead of riding the bench.
Geno has proven twice he can’t hit in Seattle. No need to make it a trifecta. Dipoto is too smart hopefully to spend too much on him. Colt will knock him off of 3rd at some point and make him a DH. We have had too many DHs that can’t hit. Pirates need to spend some money and get Skenes into the playoffs. Pitt will lose Skenes shortly need to make hay when they have him.
When exactly did he prove TWICE that he couldn’t hit in Seattle? 2022-2023 he hit over 50 HRs combined in Seattle. We traded him away because of his K rate, not because he couldn’t hit for power at least. You’re seriously gonna turn down 30 dingers next year to clear the way for Colt Emerson struggling for a year? Or Ben Williamson hitting 3 homeruns?
Pirates payroll right now is barely more than what they opened with in 2025. Still way less than it should be.
Mariners terrible fit. Could see him hitting .190, obp .280, poor fielder, maybe 22 hrs
It won’t be Boston
Really nice right handed platoon bat with Ryan McMahon in the Bronx
Padres can really use the right handed thump in their lineup plus the 1B platoon with Sheets.
Los Pobres will sign him to a 2yr/$45MM deal to play first base, unless the New York Mess can sign him to an even shorter term, higher AAV deal to play CF…
Hal, sign Suarez!
Pirates might be better off moving Cruz to 3rd and signing Bader to play CF.
O’Neil looked lost and miffed in the OF last season. Could he be any worse at 3rd than in CF?
Cruz is ideally a DH. Erratic at short, a butcher in center. “Lost and miffed” is a good description along with “lackadaisical” and “lazy”. If only this kid would put some work into his game. Sheesh
I’d rather have Ben Williamson at 3B than Geno for the Mariners. GG level defense goes a long way when your SS is a step slower. If that doesn’t work by May, bring up Emerson. And if that doesn’t work by the deadline, trade for someone. At this point, with only a couple of weeks before pitchers and catchers report, the Donovan/Marte/Hoerner deals seem to be dead in the water. All you hear out of the Mariners office is crickets.
Not seeing the poll.
Bros the new Fabio of the California Penal League
Yankees, rh platoon at 1b/3b with Rice/MCMAHON and dh’s when Stanton misses his usual 60-90ish games
I’m hoping Detroit is just waiting for the asking price to drop and sign him for 1-2 years as they wait on prospects
An aging veteran with a few more years of lowering but expectable numbers at a fraction of the price a star that would require 5 at 30+ would cost sounds right up the Pirates alley. Seattle could use him to show that they want to win. My first thought was Pirates, 2nd Seattle. Anyone else would surprise me.
Here is the formula for getting this guy out:
Throw a first pitch strike. He always looks at the first pitch.
Throw a breaking ball on the second pitch. He will foul it off.
Then throw nothing close. He will eventually swing at it.
If I were a GM I would avoid signing him like the plague.
Wait? Sounds like you are describing Castellanos.
He’s the most certain to regress free agent out there. But he’ll probably still crack 30 bombs next year.
Would be fun to see him as a pirate but I’m picking Philly on a hunch.
Yankees
I’m on the fence for bringing him back to Seattle. Won’t be upset either way. If they do, I hope it’s just on a one year deal.
The Phillies don’t need Suarez, but they’ll probably make some kind of acquisition in the next few weeks to calm down the fans who are watching the Phils 2026 season end before it even begins, followed by a possible player lockout and no ball for a huge chunk of 2027. Anyone who thinks the Phils will compete with the Mets or even the Braves for the NL East championship in 2026 may be in for a rude awakening.
One player who could make a big difference for the Phils this season is Jazz Chisolm who the Yanks are trying to move. The kid can hit for power and average, run, throw, and play decent 2B, 3B and CF. He’s making pocket change for a salary and could probably be had for a modest return. He could spark the Phils the way Bader did at the end of 2025. After all, the Phils need someone to spark the team while all the old-timers are taking a nap and Stott is listening to bubble gum music.
Feels like a player a borderline irrelevant team that is under spending could “splurge” on to look like they were making an effort without a long term commitment.
A’s and Pirates seem like the most obvious candidates.to over spend on him.
He was still a 3.6 WAR player, which is well worth his price tag.
1 year/$25M to 2 years/$47M if not 3 years/$70.5M seems like a good price point and something any low budget club can afford to spend to look like they’re trying.
Given the structure of the playoffs with wild card berths, there are probably more “borderline irrelevant” teams now than there are serious contenders, but your points are well taken
To me at least, a guy who can hit homers and drive in runs added to a team with pitchers like the Pirates makes them dangerous in a short series
I’d hope the front office realizes this now too, as what it’s done this off season has been refreshing for us fans but really is likely not enough to propel them much beyond a .500 team. Granted, that’s often enough these days for a WC berth, but you’d hope they realize that spending a bit more for this kind of player could really move the needle
I just know that there are these players who aren’t really quality enough for the real contender clubs to make a serious push for or change their rosters to accommodate, but are deserving of a pay day and so clubs like the A’s, the Guardians, etc. will splurge on those guys to look like they’re trying.
I think back on when everybody and nobody seemed interested in Swisher and then the Guardians gave him 4 years/$56M just to say they spent some money on a high profile free agent.
Or when the Pirates brought back AJ Burnett at his $15.75M-ish per year AAV, or when the A’s gave Ben Sheets $10M on a bounce back contract, or even that bizarre “expensive for them and for the kind of pitcher he is” Esteban Loaiza 3 years/$21.4M contract the A’s handed out… etc. etc.
Low budget clubs over spending a little bit, short term, on players who aren’t worthless. but would be a waste of roster space on clubs that could more than afford to waste the funds.
A’s on one year deal and then trade him and cover some of his salary before deadline for 2 or more players that can help them starting in 2027.
Even though the Dodgers say their team is set. I don’t believe them. I’m pulling for the Dodgers or Mets to sign him. They’re the only two teams that exist anymore in MLB and are making signings this offseason.
All the other teams are just being spectators while they wait for the shutdown of MLB at the end of the year.
The goal shouldnt be to try and set the strikeout record,
Reds. He has a career 851 OPS in that park (59 points above his career mark). If AZ hadn’t acquired Arenado I’d say they’d have been the favorite.
Anyone but the Red Sox. They have an amazing track record recently of coming up $10M short no matter who the player is and what dollar amount he’s seeking.
Pirates with Suarez makes them an instant preseason contender for the division depending how you value Bart, Davis and Cruz.
Prates should give a 2-3 year with a 25m guaranteed AAV.
I want to add that I was heartened by Cruz’s comments that appeared in both papers online this evening. That he realizes that he needed to get to work immediately after the season ended is a good start. Have to hope it pays off. The young man even cut his dreadlocks in going for a complete shift in thinking. Good for him
I don’t value any of those three beyond what they’ve been and yet, I agree with your assertion here. Suarez fits nicely and allows the team to contend while the kids in the farm cut their teeth
Let’s hope
“Meanwhile” should start the sentence, not come in the middle between commas.
3 years 63 mil sounds insane for Suarez, but I’m sure someone will pay it.
Can’t see Pirates or Reds doing it. Hope the A’s don’t do it. Red Sox shouldn’t do it but probably will and block their young guys.
. The projection that I see most in line for him is oopsy on fangraphs
29 hrs, .218 ba, .299 obp- yikes
throw in an aging bad fielder who should take up a DH SLOT
Makes Murakami 2 years at 18 mil look like a bargain
