Rays, Rangers, Indians Eyeing Jamey Carroll

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 6:45am CDT

Veteran infielder Jamey Carroll is drawing interest from a number of teams, including the Rays, Rangers, and Indians, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter link).

Carroll, 39, endured the worst season of his 12-year career this past year, recording a .211/.267/.251 slash line in 249 total plate appearances for the Twins and Royals. However, he posted an OBP of .357 in the five seasons prior to 2013. While he's very unlikely to earn a starting job anywhere, Carroll could still have some value as a utility infielder.

Carroll's previous contract was worth $6.75MM over two years, but he figures to come cheaper this time around.

Rays Have Interest In Mark Reynolds

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 6:29am CDT

The Rays are "casting a wide net" when it comes to their search for a first baseman, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter). According to Heyman, Mark Reynolds is one available power hitter who is receiving some interest from Tampa Bay.

Although free agents like Reynolds and James Loney remain possibilities for the Rays, Loney's current asking price may be too high for the club, and Reynolds is certainly no sure thing, having posted a career-worst .699 OPS in 2013.

Tampa Bay has also been linked to a handful of potential trade candidates within the last few days, including Logan Morrison, Ike Davis, and Mitch Moreland. And when GM Andrew Friedman spoke to reporters in Orlando on Monday, he suggested that the Rays were meeting more with other teams than with agents.

Winter Meetings Review: Day 2

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 4:00am CDT

After a relatively quiet Monday in Orlando, the second day of 2013's Winter Meetings brought a little more excitement, as a couple of notable trade candidates found new homes. Let's round up Tuesday's top MLB headlines…

Transactions:

  • The Diamondbacks, Angels, and White Sox consummated the biggest deal of the week so far, working out a three-team trade that sends Mark Trumbo to Arizona, Adam Eaton to Chicago, and Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs to the Angels. The D-Backs will also receive a couple minor-leaguers in the swap.
  • The Rockies landed a starter they'd been linked to frequently in the last week, agreeing to acquire Brett Anderson from the Athletics, along with $2MM in cash, in exchange for Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen.
  • After we heard on Monday that he was nearing a deal, Rajai Davis agreed to terms with the Tigers on a two-year pact that will pay him $10MM.
  • Shortly after non-tendering him, the Mets re-signed the rehabbing Jeremy Hefner to a minor league contract.
  • Ryan Webb passed his physical and finalized his deal with the Orioles.
  • The Rangers officially announced the signing of J.P. Arencibia.
  • The Marlins finalized their signing of Garrett Jones.

Rumors:

  • The Phillies are willing to discuss Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels in trade talks, but it sounds like they'll only consider move one of their aces if they receive a huge return and shed significant salary.
  • Having acquired Trumbo, the Diamondbacks have shifted their focus to landing a front-line starting pitcher. That deal also allowed the Angels to free up some money to pursue pitching.
  • The Orioles are currently viewed as the frontrunners to land Grant Balfour.
  • As the top second baseman still available on the free agent market, Omar Infante is seeking a contract worth $8MM+ per season.
  • The Indians are open to listening to offers for Asdrubal Cabrera in addition to Justin Masterson.
  • Danny Espinosa is drawing trade interest from the Yankees and other teams, but so far the Nats are balking at moving him.
  • The Dodgers and Rangers seem increasingly unlikely to trade for David Price, opening the door for the Mariners. Nonetheless, Seattle remains reluctant to include Taijuan Walker in any offer.
  • The market for Shin-Soo Choo is up in the air, since Tuesday's developments reduced the likelihood of him landing with the D-Backs or Tigers. Meanwhile, at least one report suggested the Rangers believe Choo may be too expensive for them.
  • Any team interested in acquiring Domonic Brown may have to send the Phillies two or three young players in return.
  • The Blue Jays reportedly offered Colby Rasmus to a pair of teams in an effort to bolster their starting rotation.
  • The Red Sox appear to be out on Matt Kemp, but the Tigers and Mariners may still be involved.
  • Jason Bay has an offer from NPB's Yomiuri Giants, and may play in Japan in 2014.
  • The Rockies had been pushing hard to acquire Reds reliever Sean Marshall, but concerns about Marshall's health may ultimately kill those negotiations.
  • Though it seemed as if we may get a decision from free agent Corey Hart Tuesday night, it looks like we'll have to wait until at least Wednesday for word on Hart.
  • No updates on the Masahiro Tanaka front — the Rakuten Golden Eagles are still undecided on whether or not to post him.
  • Former Athletics ace Mark Mulder is making a comeback bid.
  • While Brett Gardner has been the subject of some trade rumors this week, the Yankees are more likely to keep him and try to move Ichiro Suzuki.
  • The Pirates have resumed talks with free agent first baseman James Loney, but are probably out on Bronson Arroyo. The Twins, Mets, and Reds remain in the mix for Arroyo.
  • While the Twins don't have an offer out to Arroyo or Johan Santana, they've reportedly made a proposal to Mike Pelfrey.
  • Joba Chamberlain allegedly has a one-year, $3MM offer in hand. It doesn't appear to be from the Diamondbacks, despite the fact that they're eyeing Joba. The Astros also like the righty as a buy-low candidate.
  • The Brewers, Pirates, Mariners, and Orioles are among seven teams in on Logan Morrison.
  • Kevin Youkilis is receiving some interest, but prefers to sign with a west coast team close to his California home.
  • The Pirates are open to listening to offers for southpaw Justin Wilson, and the Nats could be a suitor.
  • The White Sox are "determined" to leave Orlando with a catcher.
  • Bartolo Colon is being eyed by the Rangers and Orioles.
  • Although the Mets are in play for Stephen Drew, at least one exec expects him to return to the Red Sox.
  • The Dodgers, Marlins, and White Sox all have some level of interest in Juan Uribe, though various reports suggested neither Miami nor Chicago is a serious suitor.
  • The Royals haven't ruled out the possibility of trading Billy Butler.
  • At least seven teams have interest in Eric Chavez.
  • The Cubs, Pirates, Royals, and Braves are in the mix for Jason Hammel.
  • Michael Morse, Jesse Crain, and Chad Gaudin are a few of the names on the Astros' radar. Morse is reportedly seeking a $7-8MM salary for one year.
  • The Mariners are interested in Fernando Rodney.

Overnight Notes: Masterson, Twins, Rockies, Myers

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 3:01am CDT

Acknowledging that he'd listen to offers for anyone and everyone on his roster in the right scenario, Indians GM Chris Antonetti suggested it'd be difficult to move Justin Masterson, as Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer details. Antonetti declined to comment on the possibility of offering Masterson an extension, but added, "What I can say is how much we appreciate the contributions that Justin has made to our organization and we’d love for him to be an Indian long term."

Here are a few more overnight links from around MLB:

  • If Bronson Arroyo decides he wants to be in Minnesota, he'd be the Twins' top choice of their potential starting pitching targets, says Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (via Twitter).
  • The Rockies have expressed interest in free agent reliever Ryan Madson, but remain more likely to trade for a bullpen arm than sign one, tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
  • After missing most of last season, Brett Myers is healthy and is seeking a job this winter, tweets Jayson Stark of ESPN.com.
  • The Diamondbacks' acquisition of Mark Trumbo is the latest example of how the team operates, writes Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. As Piecoro points out, Arizona generally doesn't care about getting what the industry would consider "full value" for their trade chips.
  • The uncertainty surrounding Masahiro Tanaka continues to slow the pace of negotiations for the top starting pitchers already on the market, tweets Berardino.
  • A Monday report suggested another NPB starter, Kenta Maeda, could play for an MLB team as soon as 2015, but the latest word on Maeda indicates the right-hander might even be posted this winter. Ben Badler of Baseball America has the details.
  • Badler also writes that changes are coming to the limits on international spending in 2014, with MLB teams set to lose up to $300K in signing money that had previously been exempt from bonus pools.

AL East Links: Choo, Drew, Lester, Yankees

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 2:29am CDT

As we continue to round up leftovers from Day Two of the Winter Meetings with an eye toward Day Three, let's check in on the latest notes from around the AL East….

  • In a piece for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick breaks down all the teams that could make a run at Shin-Soo Choo, including the Red Sox, Orioles, and Yankees. Crasnick concludes that the lack of very strong candidates doesn't necessarily bode well for Choo's chances of landing a $130MM+ contract, but cautions, as always, not to underestimate Scott Boras.
  • if Stephen Drew is willing to sign for two years or less, he'll likely just return to Boston, tweets Newsday's David Lennon, who adds that the Mets will probably need the Red Sox out of the mix to have a real shot at the shortstop.
  • Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald explains why Cole Hamels' contract with the Phillies may provide a blueprint for any extension talks the Red Sox have with Jon Lester.
  • The Yankees' decision to sign three free agents who required draft pick compensation should help keep the team contend in the short term, but may further stunt the growth of the farm system, writes Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal.

Phillies Notes: Brown, Papelbon, Lee, Hamels

By Luke Adams 2 | December 11, 2013 at 12:55am CDT

The Phillies have been involved in a handful of rumors this week in Orlando, as reports surfaced suggesting that the team is open to moving Domonic Brown, as well as aces Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. However, it sounds like the price tags on any of those players would be extremely high, reducing the likelihood of a deal. Here's the latest on the Phillies:

  • One club told Peter Gammons (Twitter link) that the possibility of attaching Brown to Jonathan Papelbon in a trade is in play for the Phillies. In that scenario, Philadephia would use the savings to pursue starting pitching help.
  • Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly spoke to a few people who have "knowledge of the inner workings" of the team, and received mixed reactions on whether the Phillies would really move Lee or Hamels. One source called the rumors a "smokescreen" while another suggested the club might trade Lee, but not Hamels.
  • For his part, GM Ruben Amaro called the Lee and Hamels rumors "silly," according to Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News.
  • Corey Seidman of CSNPhilly.com wonders if the Angels' trade of Mark Trumbo might provide a blueprint for the Phillies and Brown, considering both players are corner outfielders with big bats and limited defensive value.
  • The Phillies are satisfied with their offense and aren't looking to make significant additions, but David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News notes that everything will have to break right for it to be an impact lineup.

Rockies, Reds Talked Sean Marshall

By Luke Adams 2 | December 10, 2013 at 1:15pm CDT

1:15pm: While talks aren't dead, concerns over Marshall's health could ultimately kill the deal, tweets Renck. The Rockies were "aggressively" pursuing the lefty as recently as last night, he adds.

TUESDAY, 12:39pm: The Rockies and Reds discussed Sean Marshall at length last night, and a trade appeared close at one point, according to Renck. However, those talks have idled for the time being. It's not clear whether the Reds would have included any salary relief to help offset the remaining $12MM on Marshall's deal, Renck adds.

MONDAY: As they search for relief help, the Rockies appear to have shifted their focus from the free agent market to trade talks, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post. According to Renck, Colorado is "pushing hard" to acquire a hard-throwing relief pitcher to add to the back end of its bullpen.

Renck noted earlier today that Joaquin Benoit and Grant Balfour were among the free agent power arms that interested the Rockies, but the price tags on those players and other top relievers will likely be too high for Colorado.

The Rockies' current plan is for LaTroy Hawkins to close games, so the club is looking for another arm to complement Rex Brothers in a setup role. Renck mentions Royals pitchers Wade Davis, Tim Collins, Aaron Crow and Luke Hochevar as possible fits, though Kansas City is far from the only team willing to move relievers.

Indians Willing To Listen On Masterson, Cabrera

By Luke Adams 2 | December 10, 2013 at 10:41am CDT

10:41am: Despite their need for a shortstop, the Mets aren't in on Cabrera, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter).

TUESDAY, 10:32am: The Indians are also willing to listen on Asdrubal Cabrera, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links). As Morosi notes, Cleveland has a potential franchise shortstop on the horizon in Francisco Lindor. Their willingness to shop Cabrera isn't surprising given Lindor's presence, Cabrera's $10MM salary in 2014 and the fact that Cabrera slumped to a .242/.299/.402 batting line in 2013.

MONDAY: The Indians are open to fielding Justin Masterson trade pitches, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Rosenthal reports that Cleveland will listen on Masterson, with the idea of targeting players that would remain under team control for more years.

Masterson, 28, enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2013, posting a 3.45 ERA and 9.1 K/9 in 32 outings (29 starts) for the Indians. However, he's entering his final arbitration-eligible season, meaning he'll likely earn between $9-10MM in 2014, based on Matt Swartz's projections. Masterson will also be eligible for free agency a year from now, so the Indians will have to decide soon whether or not he'll be part of the club's long-term plan.

AL West Rumors: Rangers, Butler, Mariners, A’s

By Luke Adams 2 | December 9, 2013 at 11:59pm CDT

As Day One of the 2013 winter meetings nears a close, let's round up a few updates from around the AL West….

  • The Rangers will "probably not" be involved in a trade for a high-end starting pitcher, GM Jon Daniels conceded on Monday. "We’d love to have some of the guys that are out there, but there doesn’t appear to be a fit for us," Daniels said, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
  • Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports (via Twitter) that the Rangers had interest in acquiring Billy Butler earlier in the offseason, but after trading for Prince Fielder, Texas is unlikely to maintain serious interest in the Royals' DH.
  • Discussing the possibility of adding a right-handed bat, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik suggested that it "could very well be our main focus," according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune (Twitter link).
  • It was a quiet Monday in Orlando for the Athletics, says Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Nonetheless, assistant GM David Forst says the A's will remain in touch with teams and agents in the hopes of improving the team. Forst also acknowledged that Oakland could use some more prospects in the upper levels of its minor league system (all Twitter links).

Rajai Davis Nearing Deal; Tigers, Twins In Mix

By Luke Adams 2 | December 9, 2013 at 11:16pm CDT

11:16pm: The Tigers are viewed as the frontrunners for Davis, a source tells Nicholson-Smith (Twitter link).

10:32pm: Davis is indeed getting close to a contract agreement, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith hears from a source (Twitter link). It's not clear yet whether it will be with the Twins or another team.

9:46pm: Minnesota is in the mix for Davis, reports Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities. According to Wolfson, the Twins are willing to commit multiple years to Davis, which should make the team a strong suitor for his services.

9:09pm: If Davis does sign within the next couple days, as Duquette predicted, it doesn't sound like it will be with the O's. Kubatko hears that Baltimore isn't in on Davis (Twitter link).

7:23pm: We haven't heard many rumors on Rajai Davis so far this offseason, but Orioles GM Dan Duquette said today that he expects the outfielder to sign a contract within the next day or two, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (Twitter link).

It's not clear yet if Duquette came away with that impression after speaking to Davis' agent, or whether the O's themselves are seriously in the mix for Davis. It's worth noting though that Duquette also indicated today that he believed his team would add at least one player within the next couple days.

Davis, 33, hasn't played in an everyday role for the Blue Jays over the last three seasons, but has seen enough action to rack up nearly 1,200 plate appearances, recording a .252/.299/.369 slash line. The speedster has also added 125 stolen bases over that period.

Since the Jays' season ended, reports on Davis have suggested that he'll likely leave Toronto and that he'll be seeking a starting role. An everyday job seems unlikely given Davis' struggles against right-handed pitching, but he'd make a solid fourth outfielder, a role which should give him the opportunity to earn plenty of at-bats, if his last few years in Toronto have been any indication.
