Yankees Not Looking For Bats

By Eddie Schmid | June 24, 2009 at 10:29pm CDT

Marc Carig at the Newark Star Ledger tweeted a quote from GM Brian Cashman earlier today on the possibility the Yankees are looking for a bat:

"We don't need a bat… We have a tremendous offense that's scuffling right now," Cashman said.

Before an 8-4 victory tonight over the Braves, the Yankees had scored a total of 18 runs in 7 games, and their team OPS was .614. The spotlight was particularly on Alex Rodriguez, who went 1 for 15 in that stretch, where they lost five of seven.

Was the victory tonight enough to be convinced that the Yankees' offensive woes have come to an end? Was it ever worthy of concern in the first place, or did somebody unnecessarily hit the panic button? If you think the Yanks need a bat after all, who do you pursue? Share your thoughts.

Yankees Designate Angel Berroa For Assignment

By Eddie Schmid | June 24, 2009 at 6:24pm CDT

According to Peter Abraham at the Journal-News, the Yankees have designated infielder Angel Berroa for assignment to make space for utilityman Cody Ransom.

Berroa, 31, put up a rough .356 OPS in 22 at-bats for the Yanks. He's notable for his Rookie of the Year campaign for the Royals in 2003, but he's been on a pretty steep decline since then.

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 24, 2009 at 2:28pm CDT

The Indians have acquired reliever Jose Veras from the Yankees for cash considerations, according to a team press release. The Yankees designated Veras for assignment last week after he disappointed in 25.2 innings of work. Veras struck out 18, but allowed 37 baserunners.

Odds & Ends: Orioles, White Sox, Nady, Indians

By Mike Axisa | June 22, 2009 at 8:23pm CDT

Some links to check out while watching game one of the College World Series …

  • MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko spoke to Orioles mastermind Andy MacPhail about plenty of topics, including the scuffling Felix Pie and fifth overall pick Matt Hobgood.
  • South Side Sox breaks down the White Sox players who won't (or can't) be traded.
  • Xavier Nady is set to begin a rehab assignment, however Buster Olney recently said the Yankees will not look to trade one of their spare outfielders once he returns.
  • Indians president Paul Dolan says he is concerned about the team's direction, but will not make any "rash decisions" according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It certainly sounds like Eric Wedge's days are numbered, and his number is coming up.
  • The Dallas Morning News' Kevin Sherrington writes that even though they're in first place, the Rangers aren't in a position to go all out and need to keep focusing on the future.

Odds And Ends: Red Sox, Mateo, Sano

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 22, 2009 at 2:51pm CDT

More links for the afternoon…

  • The Pirates signed Victor Black, their supplemental round pick, according to Mike Vukovcan of KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox are set to sign their second round pick, righty Alex Wilson, for about $475k. He turned down $600k from the Cubs last year.
  • ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure says the Nats will work Wagner Mateo out, but aren't likely to sign him.
  • Arangure says the  Mariners, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Yankees and Cubs could sign Mateo.
  • Arangure still expects Miguel Angel Sano to sign with the Pirates.
  • Peter Abraham of the Journal News suggests the Yankees should release Brett Tomko and Angel Berroa. He also suggests five other ways the Yankees could improve without making a trade.
  • Peter Gammons says C.C. Sabathia could use some extra rest in this ESPN Radio discussion. Gammons also believes Daisuke Matsuzaka's injury is "pretty serious."
  • MLB.com's Rustin Dodd looks back at the deal that sent Carlos Beltran to the Astros. Five years ago Wednesday, the Royals acquired Mike Wood, Mark Teahen and John Buck for their center fielder.
  • Click here to take another look at the MLBTR glossary post on the international signing period. It now explains how some players born in early September, 1993 can sign this year.

Heyman: Ten Teams That Could Add Payroll

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 22, 2009 at 12:54pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com provides a list of ten teams that could add payroll. He adds the Angels, Brewers, Red Sox and Brewers to the list we assembled last week. Here are his ten teams:

  • The Red Sox could add payroll, but they don't have significant needs.
  • The Mets could add payroll and they need a hitter who can play first, the outfield, or both.
  • The Phillies could add payroll to acquire pitching.
  • The Angels, with several contracts expiring this year (Vladimir Guerrero, John Lackey, Chone Figgins), could add salary.
  • The Giants could take on payroll to add a bat.
  • The Brewers and Cardinals could both free up money to add a pitcher or hitter.
  • The Tigers, White Sox and Dodgers round out Heyman's list, but he warns us not to rule out the Yankees.
  • Don't look for the White Sox to deal prospects away to increase their playoff chances, even though they trail the Tigers by just 5.0 games.
  • On another note, no one's called the Mariners about Adrian Beltre.

Odds & Ends: O’s, Josh Johnson, Yankees, Red Sox

By Nat Boyle | June 21, 2009 at 11:37am CDT

A busy Sunday morning has made for some some discussable items from around the league:

  • Rick Dempsey of MASN is excited by the Orioles future and says it is undoubtedly time for the team to trade, highlighting George Sherrill, Jeremy Guthrie, Brian Roberts, Aubrey Huff, and Melvin Mora.
  • Carlos Frias of the Palm Beach Post notes A.J. Burnett has regrets over leaving the Marlins and burning his bridges in the process.
  • After Josh Johnson beat the Yankees yesterday, Mike Feinsand of the New York Daily News says, "Hope you got a good look, Yankees fans. You may have been watching your future ace."
  • River Ave. Blues thinks trading Xavier Nady makes sense despite Buster Olney having said, "The Yankees are unlikely to trade Nick Swisher of Xavier Nady after Nady returns."
  • Not a trade rumor, but Manny Ramirez is set to begin a minor-league stint on Tuesday in Albuquerque, says The Tribune-Review.
  • Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe says (via Twitter, of course) "Daisuke [Matsuzaka] to DL. [Catching prospect] Dusty Brown up with the team for the first time." She continues, "About to talk to Daisuke. Will get quotes to you shortly. [Sox manager Terry Francona] said he doesn't think this will be a two-week DL." While the Sox still have rotation depth, this surely effects any perceived sense of urgency to deal.

Yankees Will Sign Gary Sanchez

By Eddie Schmid | June 20, 2009 at 6:54pm CDT

According to George A. King III at the New York Post, the Yankees have agreed to sign 16-year-old Dominican catching prospect Gary Sanchez. A contract won't be in place until July 2nd when the international signing period kicks off, but Sanchez will reportedly make $2.5MM in the deal.

Last week, Jorge Arangure noted that the Yankees had made it "very clear" Sanchez was their top choice of the international market. One scout in King's article called Sanchez a "big kid with a big arm" and a "good hitter" but claims he doesn't have the bat of fellow Yankees catching prospect Jesus Montero. The Yankees still retain interest in Miguel Angel Sano, sources tell King.

Olney’s Latest: Dodgers, Yankees, Pedro, Strasburg

By Mike Axisa | June 20, 2009 at 11:27am CDT

ESPN.com's Buster Olney writes that it "is said by others" that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is searching for pitching. Olney outlines the heavy workload endured by the Dodgers' bullpen early on, and wonders how it will hold up down the stretch.

Here's some other bits that Olney's heard:

  • The Yankees are unlikely to trade Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady when the latter returns from an elbow injury because of the club's needs. Olney also mentions that they wouldn't be able to get full market value for Nady because of his injury.
  • The Yanks did discuss Nady with other clubs during the offseason after signing Mark Teixeira.
  • Several teams walked away from Pedro Martinez's workout yesterday unimpressed and uninterested in signing him.
  • Olney says that several teams would be interested in the future Hall of Famer if he decides to pitch for something close to the pro-rated minimum with incentives, and is willing to work his way back up through the minors.
  • Early talks between the Nationals and first overall pick Stephen Strasburg "are off to a sluggish start."

Pedro Martinez Rumors: Friday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 19, 2009 at 7:13pm CDT

7:12pm: George A. King III reports that the Yankees have informed Pedro that they will pass on signing him.

6:17pm: Jon Heyman tweets that the Rangers Brewers and Cardinals also watched Pedro work out today. He also mentions that the Cubs' uncertain ownership situation hurts their chances to sign the veteran righthander.

8:42am: Pedro Martinez says he's in great shape, but the Yankees are only interested in signing him to a minor league deal. Here are some specifics on today's Pedro rumors:

  • Pedro told Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald that his arm feels good enough to "throw and throw and throw and throw," he just needs to polish his breaking pitches.
  • Pedro said he's in "tippy-top shape," and joked about starting another career soon: "I'm thinking of becoming a swimsuit model," he said.
  • Pedro will play winter ball in hopes of playing in 2010 if he doesn't sign this year.
  • He said money doesn't motivate him.
  • Ken Davidoff and Steve Zipay of Newsday report that the Yankees are only interested in signing Pedro to a minor league deal.
  • The Yankees will watch him pitch today, along with the Cubs, Rays and Angels.
  • Jon Heyman of SI.com presents a revised list of Pedro's suitors. In order: the Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, Rays and the two New York teams.
