Royals To Sign Bartolo Colon?

By Tim Dierkes | January 2, 2008 at 10:42pm CDT

According to the Dominican site Impacto Deportivo, the Royals are moving toward signing Bartolo Colon.  Here’s the article in its original form, and here it is via Google Translator.  We’ll have to wait for confirmation and details before judging anything.

MLB.com’s Bill Ladson wrote on December 4th that the Nationals believed Colon would not accept a one-year deal.  Aside from the Nats, the Mets, Rangers, Cardinals, Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Mariners have been connected to Colon.

Odds and Ends: Hillenbrand, Tsao, Uehara

By Tim Dierkes | January 1, 2008 at 10:19pm CDT

Here are some random bits and pieces to hold us over until front offices re-open…

  • Shea Hillenbrand has only received one inquiry this winter – from the Giants.  He probably won’t be earning $6MM again.  Hillenbrand posted a .599 OPS in 267 ABs for the Angels and Dodgers this year.  I thought perhaps that was one of the worst performances of the decade for guys with 250+ ABs.  However it’s only the 49th worst since 2000.  Homer Bush’s 2000 takes the cake – a .524 OPS for the Blue Jays in 297 ABs.
  • The Royals inked Chin-Hui Tsao to a minor-league deal.  Tsao was once considered the Rockies’ best prospect, but he’s been decimated by injuries.  Makes sense for the Royals to throw him a bone though.
  • Koji Uehara re-signed with the Yomiuri Giants for 400 million yen – about $3.57MM.  He’ll turn 33 in April.  A hamstring injury knocked Uehara out of the ’07 season’s first month, denying him free agency this winter.  Now he needs to be active for just eight days to be eligible after the season.  The Giants used him in relief in ’07, perhaps to spite him.  Read more about that and his repertoire in my Q&A with Mike Plugh on Uehara.
  • John Fay runs down the Reds’ veteran free agent starter options.
  • A-Rod still won’t return Scott Boras’ calls.
  • Jason Churchill names some intriguing, possibly available young hurlers who may be on Seattle’s radar: Scott Olsen, Noah Lowry, Daniel Cabrera, Edwin Jackson, Chris Capuano, Ian Snell, and Anthony Reyes.
  • Nothing is cooking with Brandon Inge, and the Tigers won’t be bringing Sean Casey back.

Miguel Olivo Signs With Royals

By Tim Dierkes | December 27, 2007 at 10:15am CDT

Press release from the Royals – they’ve signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a one-year deal with options for both sides for ’09.  This is a surprise; there hadn’t been any rumors of KC’s interest.

While allergic to walks, the 29 year-old backstop has above average pop for a catcher.  He’s also adept at gunning down attempted thieves.  Incumbent 27 year-old catcher John Buck also bats right-handed and has decent power.  Perhaps the Olivo signing is designed to push him.

Royals Sign Ron Mahay

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2007 at 6:27pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has the scoop – the Royals have signed southpaw reliever Ron Mahay to a two-year, $8MM deal.  Nice move by Dayton Moore getting him for less than the Phillies paid for J.C. Romero, an inferior pitcher.

Mahay is 36, though many readers pointed out to me that he converted to pitching late in life (when he was 25 or so).  However – and I can’t find the link the moment – Will Carroll has found position player converts to be at greater injury risk.

The Royals are three-deep with lefty relievers, so maybe they’ll shop Jimmy Gobble or John Bale now.  Mahay had been a Yankee target, so perhaps they’ll move on to Damaso Marte.

Mahay was a Type B, so the Braves receive a sandwich pick for their loss (not at the Royals’ expense).

Odds and Ends: Johan, Hudson, A-Rod, Dallas

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2007 at 2:55pm CDT

Collection o’ links…

  • LENIII has a Johan Santana update…nothing groundbreaking going on, pretty much looks like the Yanks and Red Sox are still both involved.
  • The Brewers were apparently pretty deep in discussions for Miguel Tejada during the Winter Meetings.
  • After a year out of baseball Javy Lopez is back with the Braves on a minor-league deal.  Remember when he slugged .687 with 43 home runs in 457 ABs?  Good times.
  • Nick Piecoro has some chatter about Orlando Hudson, who hits free agency after the ’08 season.  The most interesting part is that Hudson refers to Bob Melvin as "Bo-Mel."  It’s the same story with Hudson – he’d like an extension, the D’Backs are noncommittal.  You never know – I certainly didn’t expect them to re-up Eric Byrnes.  But as of right now it seems like Hudson will walk.
  • Alex Rodriguez is not on speaking terms with Scott Boras…let’s all hope they reconcile, they were a great couple.
  • Barry Jackson says the Marlins have their eye on Dallas McPherson.  The Giants are known to be interested as well.
  • Mike Sweeney’s agent has been in touch with the Royals as well as two other clubs.  I think he might have to accept a bench role this year.

Dodgers Sign Kuroda

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2007 at 6:30pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 6:26pm: Crasnick has an update: it’s for $35-36MM over three years.  So he’s no bargain.  $35.3MM, to be exact.

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 3:52pm: Ken Rosenthal checks in, noting that the Dodgers and other clubs were willing to go to four years on Kuroda but he preferred three.

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 2:25pm: Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News reports that the Dodgers have signed Kuroda to a three-year deal worth between $36-40MM, pending a physical.  The Dodgers will go with Brad Penny, Chad Billingsley, Derek Lowe, Kuroda, and Jason Schmidt if he’s healthy.  Esteban Loaiza might have to move to the bullpen for now.

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 11:32am: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times says Ned Colletti had multiple conversations with Kuroda’s agent yesterday, and the two sides made "significant progress."  The Dodgers still appear to be offering three years and $30MM.  Hernandez adds that Arizona continued talking to Kuroda’s agent as well – the addition of Dan Haren apparently doesn’t diminish their interest.

FROM 12-14-07 at 9:50pm:

After all the ruckus about Hiroki Kuroda earlier this week, his agent said today that he still has not reached a decision.  The decision is "very close," and may come by the end of the weekend.  The Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals have offers out.

No word yet on whether the D’Backs will pull their offer after snagging Dan Haren.  I know they’re going with the three-year payroll plan, so they can probably still fit Kuroda in.

Royals Acquire Alberto Callaspo

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2007 at 1:47pm CDT

Interesting move today, as the Royals sent 24 year-old minor league starter Billy Buckner to the Diamondbacks for 24 year-old second baseman Alberto Callaspo.

Buckner, a labrum surgery survivor, has a plus curveball according to Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein.  Goldstein adds that he’s able to get groundballs and projects as a fourth starter.  Throw him in the NL, maybe he could even become a #3.

Callaspo is one of the better second base prospects out there, but keep in mind that good prospects rarely come up at that position.  He almost never whiffs, and plays strong defense.  The high contact approach led to a .341 average in Triple A this year.  That the D’Backs shipped him off could imply they want to sign Orlando Hudson long-term.  Perhaps Callaspo’s off-field indiscretions played into the decision.  At any rate he’s a nice addition for the Royals.

Today’s Non-tenders: Towers, Prior, Everett, Durbin

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2007 at 11:48pm CDT

Tim’s out for the night, so we’ve got a fresh post started for the non-tenders.  MLB.com has a running list as well.

These guys are the officials as of now:

  • As expected, the Marlins non-tendered catcher Miguel Olivo.  Johnny Estrada was another casualty; these two make up the market for starting catchers.
  • The Blue Jays non-tendered Josh Towers, a surprising move.  Some NL team could offer him two years and get league average work out of him.
  • Mark Prior has been non-tendered.  Honestly if I were the Cubs, I would’ve tossed the $3.5MM his way just to see.
  • Aaron Miles is now a free agent.
  • The A’s cut Kiko Calero loose.
  • The Padres have non-tendered four: Morgan Ensberg, Jason Lane, and pitchers Jack Cassell and Ryan Ketchner. RotoWorld speculates that the latter two, not arbitration eligible, could be offered minor league deals.
  • The Royals cut the cord on Emil Brown.  He turns 33 soon; he hit an ugly .257/.300/.347 in 2007.  Brown earned $3.45MM in ’07.
  • The Tigers non-tendered Chad Durbin, toss him into the free agent pool.  Guess those trade talks with the Bucs didn’t work out.
  • The Twins have let go Jason Tyner.
  • The Nats have cut bait with Nook Logan and LHP Michael O’Connor.
  • The Dodgers wave goodbye to Mark Hendrickson.
  • The White Sox have non-tendered Andy Gonzalez and LHP Heath Phillips. Joe Crede sticks with the Pale Hose for now.
  • Adam Everett has lost his job with the Astros. It’d be kind of funny if the Orioles signed him.
  • Per RotoWorld, the Angels have non-tendered Dallas McPherson. He’s full of potential, but he’s never come through. He’s only 27, though, so he could still catch on somewhere. Unless, RotoWorld notes, he has an agreement in place with the Angels.
  • The Braves have non-tendered Willie Harris, though he had already been DFA’d.

–Joe and Tim

Today’s Non-tenders

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2007 at 4:48pm CDT

As you know, the non-tender deadline is tonight. I’ve got my list of candidates right here.  In this post, I’ll note all those who are officially non-tendered and hence become free agents.

Royals Still Want Kuroda; Could Turn To Silva

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2007 at 10:42pm CDT

Bob Dutton of the KC Star has the latest Royals buzz, as usual.

The Royals are being aggressive trying to win an unlikely bid for Hiroki Kuroda.  They might even send Trey Hillman to Japan to make a last-minute pitch.  The Dodgers currently lead for Kuroda, who will decide from Japan rather than take a U.S. tour.

Plan B for the Royals is said to be Carlos Silva, but not at a price higher than four years and $40MM.  That probably won’t cut it for Silva, who can probably get an additional $10MM or another year elsewhere.
