MLBTR Chat Transcript

By Steve Adams | August 19, 2025 at 12:59pm CDT

Steve Adams

  • Good morning! We’ll get going at 1:00 CT, give or take a couple minutes, but feel free to begin sending in questions ahead of time if you prefer.
  • Greetings! Let’s get going

Doug Sisk

  • What happens to Frankie Montas’ 2026 player option if the Mets release him before the end of the 2025 season?

Steve Adams

  • The player option is guaranteed money. He’d make next year’s $17MM and count against the luxury tax whether he’s on the roster or not.

OsKnows

  • Mountcastle’s time as an O almost over?

Steve Adams

  • I do think he’ll be traded this offseason (or perhaps just non-tendered if he really struggles down the stretch, but he’s hitting well since returning from the IL anyhow). I’d expect first base to primarily be a combination of Mayo and Basallo next year. Mountcastle only has one year of club control left and will probably make more than $8MM. O’s can move him and put that money toward pitching instead.

Guarded Indian

  • When a player is released to pursue an opportunity overseas, does that generally happen because the players agent is looking for better financial opportunities for their client or is it because the foreign team reaches out?  I’m trying to figure out how a AAAA player is identified as a good fit for a Korean baseball team etc.

Steve Adams

  • KBO and NPB teams have scouts watching MLB and MiLB games. They’ll identify guys they like, get in touch with the agent, and if there’s reciprocal interest you can then pull in the player’s current organization and discuss some kind of release fee.By the time a player is getting released to pursue a foreign opportunity, the contract and any release fee have typically already been sorted out.

Jerry Dipoto

  • Am I going to re-sign Josh Naylor to be my 1B next year? Or is there a different external options I should be looking at? I don’t see the player in house.

Steve Adams

  • I lean toward no. Mitch Garver is the only free agent position player Dipoto has signed to a multi-year deal since taking over the Mariners a decade ago.

TennesseeMG

  • Do you think Kyle Tucker’s monster slump will have a major impact, moderate impact or little to no impact on the deal he gets in free agency?

Steve Adams

  • Little to none, provided it’s not due to an injury or anything. We have like 5 years of telling us this guy’s an amazing hitter… that’s not going to get overshadowed by a few weeks of struggles. I mean, if he hits like .150/.225/.250 down the stretch, maybe it starts to impact, but as of right now, it’s not a factor really.

Steve Cohen

  • Who do you think wins the MVP in each league?

Steve Adams

  • Ohtani in the NL, and I’ve probably flipped to Raleigh in the AL. I could go either way at this moment, but it increasingly seems like Judge is going to be limited or a total nonfactor on defense for the rest of the season, and he’s in a pretty rough stretch at the plate which seems attributable to the injury.

Jose Alvarado

  • I’m coming off the restricted list today… My contract is done at the end of 2025…  but if I perform down the stretch similar to what I did before my PED suspension – do you think the Phillies will try to re-sign me? Or did a door close in Philly after I screwed up.

Steve Adams

  • The Phillies have a $9MM club option that comes with a $500K buyout. A net $8.5MM option is a pretty easy call for them on Alvarado. He’ll be back.

Effin Eflin

  • Does Zach Eflin get a QO from the Orioles this off season?

Steve Adams

  • Had he been healthy, yeah — but with the lat/back injuries and now back surgery clouding some of his offseason, no. The O’s aren’t risking around $22MM on day one of the offseason when he’ll only be a couple months into the rehab process.

Jays in 43 parks

  • Bassitt is having a decent season. Would a 2 yr ext at same AAV be smart for the Jays. Would Bassitt accept?

Steve Adams

  • I think a two-year term is pretty reasonable — he’s not going to get more than that for ages 37 and 38 — but the $21MM AAV feels a little steep to me. Bassitt is still effective, and he’s consistent, but his velo is down more than a mile per hour from last year and nearly two miles per hour from the point at which he signed the contract. I don’t think teams are going to excited about $20MM+ for a 37-year-old who’s sitting 91 mph with his heater. I’d probably guess like $15-16MM per year over two.

Walter

  • How much longer before the Clase and Ortiz situation is resolved?

Steve Adams

  • They’re on leave through Aug. 31, and it’ll probably extend beyond that if this is anything like prior instances of players being placed on administrative leave.

PhilsPhansince1965

  • Harrison Bader is a hard one for me to forecast – love the CF defense even while he is now at an age that it can decline rapidly. His bat has never been a steady plus however, but perhaps he can be league average in center. What range of contract offers might he get this winter?

Steve Adams

  • I think he’s done enough to get a multi-year deal. He’ll be 32, but you can bank on the defense being good and there have been some real offensive gains. Something like two years and $22MM?

Brew Crewzing

  • NL Cy Young?  Skenes is most dominant but has a losing record, Wheeler is out for awhile.  Who can sneak in?  (Freddy Peralta? If he can reach 20 wins.)

Steve Adams

  • The record is irrelevant. It’ll be Skenes, barring some late injury or collapse, and deservedly so. It’s not his fault the team around him is awful.

John

  • Is Trevor Rogers a true 1? Does he finish top 5 cy young this year?

Steve Adams

  • I don’t think he’ll have the workload to finish top 5, and I don’t buy him as an ace, no. He’s obviously improved over last year, but it’s an average strikeout rate and swinging-strike rate, good command … and huge assists from a .214 BABIP and 85% strand rate, neither of which is sustainable over a lengthy period.I loved Rogers back in ’21, but he had an extra 1.5 mph on his heater then, several extra percentage points in his swinging-strike rate and was giving up less contact on pitches in the zone.

This version of him sure looks like a good mid-rotation guy to me, but I don’t buy into the results being THIS good.

Oz

  • There were indications that the Braves would use Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin next year as their DH/catcher tandem.  In view of Sean Murphy’s struggles, is it possible that they might re-sign Marcell Ozuna to a 1-year deal, acquire a back-up catcher, and trade Murphy to fill another team need?

Steve Adams

  • I do think there’s a chance that they end up trading Murphy, but I’d be surprised to see Ozuna back with how much he’s struggled since June.

Tom Kelly’s blues

  • Do the Twins build around the core of Keashal, Lee, Lewis, Wallner, Martin and Larnach along with Buxton and Jeffers?

Steve Adams

  • I wouldn’t call all of them core pieces. Keaschall and Buxton, yes. Lee will get every chance to prove he can be that, and I can’t imagine them selling low on Royce Lewis. Wallner, Martin and especially Larnach feel much less like core pieces to me. I think Larnach is probably non-tendered or traded early in the offseason. Jeffers just has one year of club control left as well, making him a pretty viable offseason trade candidate.

Mike

  • why havent I heard anything about Merrill Kelly receiving a QO? He should get one right?

Steve Adams

  • He can’t receive one because he was traded midseason.
  • If the D-backs had kept him, yeah, he’d have gotten one.

John

  • this would’ve sounded crazy a couple years ago, but do the rangers non tender Josh Jung or still too early?

Steve Adams

  • They won’t non-tender him. He’s only going into his first arb year. But I wouldn’t be shocked with a trade, either. I imagine there are going to be sweeping changes to that lineup this offseason.

2023 Angels

  • If the Red Sox make the playoffs, is Nathaniel Lowe eligible for their post-season roster? Would this also be true if he had been claimed off waivers – i.e. if Boston had assumed his remaining contract?  Does this change for waived players added after August?

Steve Adams

  • As long as a player is in the organization — not even on the 40-man roster — before Sept. 1, he can be eligible for the postseason. If that player isn’t on the 40 as of 9/1, they’d need to petition the league to have him replace an injured player, but teams do that every year.
  • Anyone signed/claimed Sept. 1 or later is ineligible.

Luis Robert Jr

  • What sort of contract offer can I expect this offseason?

Steve Adams

  • You can expect the White Sox to pick up your $20MM option, which I wouldn’t do — I’d have traded him — but they wouldn’t have held him just to decline the option.

Kyle

  • Nate Lowe has a 1.000 OPS so far with Boston, how long can he continue this level of production?

Steve Adams

  • Forever.

WT

  • Do you see the Reds this winter signing Tyler Stephenson to an extension? He only has 1 year of control after this season. Or will the Reds try to flip him this winter and make Jose Trevino their starter given Jose is locked up for several years? Catching depth in the Reds system seems  light if they trade him or let him walk off after 2026.

Steve Adams

  • He’s been below-average at the plate (albeit average relative to his position) and would be getting a raise north of $7MM probably. I don’t know that he’s a non-tender candidate, but I could see him traded.Trevino gives them an elite, affordable glove to start back there until Alfredo Duno is ready for a look in a couple years. And while the system is lacking volume in terms of catching prospects, Duno is one of the better catching prospects in the sport.

Zeke haydn

  • Who will be the first pirate traded after the season has ended?Skenes? Or Cruz?

Steve Adams

  • Neither? But definitely not Skenes. Either Mitch Keller or Dennis Santana seems like they’d have a good chance to go, though.

Mike T

  • Will Nick Allen be looking for a new team after this year? Will he even still be in the majors?

Steve Adams

  • He’s such a good defender that someone will have him on a roster on Opening Day, but the Braves should 100% be looking for shortstop upgrades, with Allen either moving to a bench role or being traded.

Playing Nats GM

  • Between the 5 OFs on the MLB roster and a few others in the pipeline, trading from that group to fill another need makes sense for Washington. Is that something you could see the Nationals doing this winter?

Steve Adams

  • Sure. They’re not going to move Wood or Crews, but any of Young, Hassell or Lile seems plausible.

Ryan

  • Eovaldi = 2025 AL Cy Young winner?

Steve Adams

  • He’s going to come in 30 or so innings behind Skubal, Crochet and Hunter Brown. I don’t think he’s going to have the innings. But I suppose if he can somehow sustain a 1.75 ERA or even improve upon it, at a certain point the workload gap will take a backseat to the rate stats. I don’t know that anyone can really expect to sustain results this good, though, and I wouldn’t say we’ve reached the point yet where the gap can be justifiably overlooked.

Kyle

  • Does Bichette find someone to pay him like a SS this offseason, or do teams see him more as a guy who needs to move to 2B/3B and pay him accordingly?

Steve Adams

  • I think he’ll sign as a shortstop but probably move to one of those other spots a few years into a deal. Jays, Tigers, Braves are the obvious potential landing spots (not that the Braves typically spend to that extent in free agency). Detroit has McGonigle coming, but he’s still only 20 and as said, Bichette could move to another spot in a few years. But, much like Willy Adames last winter, I think it’d be beneficial to get it out there early in the winter that he’s willing to play other positions, even if the goal is to sign somewhere that he can continue as a shortstop for a few years.

Alex Bregman

  • Can I top 40 MM AAV again but on a longer deal?

Steve Adams

  • No, but he’ll crush the $80MM he has left. And you can argue he doesn’t really even have a $40MM AAV right now anyway, once you factor in deferrals.

Tom Kelly

  • Will Emmanuel Rodriguez be starting in lf for Twins next year?

Steve Adams

  • I can see him up at some point, maybe even early in the season, but the K’s are a huge concern as is the durability (or lack thereof)

Moneyball

  • Who would you dangle in trades for pitching from the position player logjam forming on the A’s and which team(s) do you think would line up well as potential trade partners?

Steve Adams

  • Bleday and Soderstrom feel like the most straightforward calls to me, though I think you can keep functioning with Soderstrom, Kurtz and Rooker all on the same roster. Soderstrom has handled the outfield move just fine. Colby Thomas would get some interest if the A’s are envisioning Soderstrom, Clarke and Butler as the long-term outfield trio.I imagine they’ll have teams trying to pry Langeliers away, and if someone offers enough pitching, I think you have to be open to it. Three years of control remaining, price tag is going to skyrocket in arb, etc.

Ranger Danger

  • Will Philly make a QO to Suarez?

Steve Adams

  • Yup

The Mick

  • What years/$ will it take to sign Bellinger next season?

Steve Adams

  • Five years in the $25MM per year range?

Kyle

  • Any chance King exercises his option for next year and stays in SD, given the amount of time he’s doesn’t on the IL with health issues the year?

Steve Adams

  • No. Even with the injuries, he could decline and expect a much better one-year deal than the net $11.25MM. He gets the $3.75MM buyout regardless.

Jeremy

  • Contract that gets Bregman resigned next year?  5 years/150m?

Steve Adams

  • I’ll take the over.

Bud Man, Cub Fan

  • Cubbies have to be kicking themselves for not trading one of Cassie or Alcantara for another starter, right?

Steve Adams

  • Cubs’ and Tigers’ passive deadlines still surprise me.

MonarchsAllDay

  • Can the Royals at least make things interesting over the next month for that final playoff spot, however unlikely?

Steve Adams

  • They’re only 3.5 out, so sure, I can see them kind of hanging around. But the rest of their schedule is pretty rough. They have a stretch coming up where they play the Tigers six times in nine games, and they still have series against the Phillies, Mariners and Blue Jays. So… I don’t expect it, but they’re close enough already that it’s not unthinkable.

Kyle

  • Assuming Giolito passes the 140 innings and declines the option, does it make sense for Boston to give him a QO?

Steve Adams

  • It does. If he accepted, that’d be a fine price for him on a one-year deal, but I think he’d be very likely to decline. When you’ve got Jameson Taillon, Eduardo Rodriguez and Taijuan Walker signing in the $68-80MM range, I don’t see why Giolito can’t get into that range.

Dandy the mascot

  • Are Dominguez and Stanton the worst defensive corner OFs for a playoff bound team this century?

Steve Adams

  • Not great, but the Phillies got there with Schwarber and Castellanos playing OF regularly in 2022.

Schwarberr

  • How scary are the 2026 Reds if they sign Schwarber given their Rotation.

Steve Adams

  • I’ll believe they sign Schwarber when I see it. I know he’s from there and there was the recent piece in The Athletic about the idea of him playing at GABP, but I’ve come around on the idea of him signing a precedent-setting deal for someone of his age and lack of defensive versatility, and I don’t see Cincinnati topping $100MM to sign him.

Brian S

  • Any chance my White Sox have any chance of signing Murakami?

Steve Adams

  • I’d be surprised, as they haven’t really been active in the NPB market since………… Tadahito Iguchi? Am I missing anyone? Also, they’ve never signed a player for more than $75MM (which is still insane to think about for a team from Chicago … or really, for any team in MLB at this point).

Hard to say what Murakami’s earning power will be with the strikeouts, struggles against velocity and a half season lost to injury, but a 25-year-old with 80 raw power is going to get interest. He’s also demolishing the ball since he came off the injured list a couple weeks ago (albeit while still striking out in about a third of his plate appearances).

Kyle

  • Chances Cease and/or King sign short term high AAV deals with opt outs (a la Bregman) to hopefully have a bounce back year and hit free agency again next year?

Steve Adams

  • I can see it with either, sure.

Mike Elias

  • Do I trade Adley to the Mariners this offseason for much needed pitching?

Steve Adams

  • Think Seattle’s pretty good at catcher. They have a young guy back there who’s having an OK season. Can’t recall his name, but he’s one to watch for in the years ahead. 🙂

CHISOX FAN

  • Will Braden Montgomery be given a chance to make the team next year?

Steve Adams

  • I’d be surprised if he makes the club out of camp. He still only has 15-20 games in AA and has struck out a lot there. But sometime next summer, sure.

Trade Rumors Front Office Subscriber Chat: Today, 2pm CT

By Steve Adams | August 18, 2025 at 1:58pm CDT

Steve Adams

  • Good afternoon! I'll get going at 2pm CT, but feel free to send in questions ahead of time, as usual.
  • Greetings!
  • Let's begin

RAGBRAI

  • Does Gallen get a QO from AZ and if so does he take it? What would he get on the open market with a respectable ROS?

Steve Adams

  • They'll give him a QO. His decision probably hinges somewhat on how he finishes, though I expect him to decline it. Gallen feels like he's going to be the next relatively high-profile starting pitcher/Boras client to sign a two-year deal with an opt-out. If he finishes poorly enough, maybe he accepts or (more surprisingly) doesn't get a QO. But I think if the D-backs saw any real scenario where they wouldn't give him the qualifying offer, he'd have been traded in July.
  • Obviously, a major injury changes that calculus, but short of that, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get one.
  • If he accepts that, it's not the end of the world. They paid Jordan Montgomery $22MM not to throw a pitch for them in 2025. A similarly priced gamble on a Gallen rebound isn't a terrible bet.

Brad

  • How many major league free agent contracts have surplus value? I feel like the percentage is much lower than you think.

Steve Adams

  • By definition, very few of them are going to provide surplus value. Free agency is an auction, and most teams tap out of the bidding because they feel the price has exceeded the player's value. On some one-year deals or some mid-range free agent deals, you can find some bargains, but it's only natural for the weightier free-agent deals to come in to provide minimal surplus value -- if any at all.

JM

  • Why can a player stay under club control after he's released and granted free agency? For instance (if reports are correct), Nathaniel Lowe is a free agent and will sign today with the Red Sox, after the Nats DFAed and released him upon clearing waivers. But those same reports say the Sox will have a final arb year of club control in 2026 (though likely non-tender him anyway). Once a free agent (after a release or a non-tender), not always a free agent?

MLBTR Chat Transcript

By Mark Polishuk | August 17, 2025 at 7:41pm CDT

Mark P

  • Let’s open up the Weekend Chat! We’ll delve into the bees, beads, and baseball after we get a few questions in the queue…

BhamBrave

  • What sort of deal is Marcel Ozuna looking at after this season?

Mark P

  • One year, worth maybe around $10MM or so?

He’s entering his age-35 season, and is coming off a solid year that has seen him greatly increase his walk rate, even as his other numbers are basically all down from 2024.  (Though still above average.)  He’s a DH-only player, and his past off-the-field issues will also limit his market to some extent.

Kyle Schwarber

  • Do you think i’ll resign with Philly?

Mark P

  • Yes.  The Phillies have shown a tendency to retain their favored internal free agents, and Schwarber is beloved by everyone from ownership on down.

intl signings

  • What is a better strategy in the intl signing period- sign one top prospect using most of your pool or sign a few second tier guys and spread the risk ?  Should you alternate the two strategies ?

Mark P

  • It’s hard to say since the international market is such a crapshoot.  When dealing with prospects at such a young age, it’s so hard to view a kid as such a “sure thing” that it’s worth committing most of your pool towards a signing.  We’ve seen plenty of highly-touted int’l signings over the years fizzle out in the minors, let alone in the big leagues.

Rockies Fans

  • It appears on paper we’re beginning to see a core group developing in Colorado: Hunter Goodman, Brenton Doyle, Ezequiel Tovar, Jordan Beck, Warming Bernabel, Kyle Karros, and Mickey Moniak.

Rockies future

  • Are we beginning to see a young core develop in Colorado?

Mark P

  • The Rockies have quietly played some respectable baseball over the last month or so, giving them a chance of avoiding the single-season loss record. I wouldn’t say the team is exactly on the right track since the organizational structure will always hold the Rockies back, but there are a few slivers of hope for the future

Blue Jays fan

  • would you consider giving Berrios a rest with an IL stint now that Bieber is ready to pitch?

Mark P

  • As Billy Eppler could tell you, teams can’t just put a guy on the IL for non-specific injury reasons.  I suspect that when Bieber is ready, the Jays will just go to a six-man rotation to give everyone extra rest days.
  • Keep in mind that these plans can always turn on a dime.  The Phillies thought they had a six-man rotation all lined up just over 24 hours ago, before the news broke about Wheeler

Dub

  • Mark: Good evening. Is Jacob Marsee a present and future fixture in the Marlins outfit rls?

Mark P

  • Based on speed and defense alone, it’s looking this way.  The book on Marsee was whether he can hit enough to stick as a regular outfielder, and the early returns have been obviously incredible.
  • Nobody should go crazy over an early-career hot streak, since Marsee “probably” isn’t the next Willie Mays.  But he’s absolutely doing enough to win himself a job for the foreseeable future

Sad Reds Fan

  • Tell me why I shouldn’t be completely disheartened by our performance this weekend. Should’ve swept the Brewers, instead looked like we never played baseball before

Mark P

  • Winning one game against the hottest team in baseball is no mean feat.  I think the Reds just caught the wrong team at the wrong time, hence the series loss.

A’s

  • The A’s couldn’t fix Cusick either as a starter or reliever.  Why would they claim his former college teammate Shuster who was also a Braves #1 pick the year before ?  Shuster has better control, but doesn’t throw hard enough so what are they thinking ?.

Mark P

  • It costs the Athletics almost literally nothing to claim Shuster and take a look at him.  For a rebuilding team in need of pitching, why not take a flier on a guy and see if you can find a fix?

Mark

  • Red Sox will need another higher end starter in the off season. Of Gore, Ryan and Alcantara who do you think makes the most sense for them if they can swing a deal?

Mark P

  • The Sox and Twins had some talks about Ryan already, with reports indicating that the two sides weren’t particularly close on a deal.  However, it could be that those talks laid some groundwork, and perhaps at least gave both sides some idea of what the other wants in such a deal.  The Twins were reportedly prioritizing MLB-ready talent in trades, and while Boston wasn’t willing to make such a move at the deadline, their perspective might be changed during the winter.

Angel Fan

  • Do you think Nolan Schanuel has a future ceiling of a Mark Grace like career?

Mark P

  • I’m going to say no, not out of disrespect to Schanuel but more out of respect to Grace’s career.  Grace was a terrific player for a long time, and it would be a huge success for Schanuel and the Angels if he can get even in the ballpark of a Grace-esque career

McGonigle ETA?

  • When do you think Kevin McGonigle will get to DET and why?

Mark P

  • It would be quite surprising if he isn’t in the big leagues before 2026 is over

Redsfan

  • Do you think the Reds pass the Mets and make the WC?

Mark P

  • The two teams have a three-game series in Cincinnati in September and looms large.  The Reds are up 2-1 so far this season for tiebreaker purposes.

I think the Reds haven’t been fully able to capitalize on the Mets’ slide to this point, yet they have more momentum than New York at this point.  On paper, the Mets should be able to get it together, but the chalk hasn’t amounted to anything for them over the last several weeks.  Frankly, I wouldn’t even count out teams like the Cardinals, Giants, or D’Backs from making a late run just yet.

  • Also, every Mets has undoubtedly noticed that the Braves have quietly been red-hot over the last week

Nancy’s Friend Sluggo

  • Dylan Cease has had a nightmare platform year. Does he sign a one-year pillow contract with a team that’s good at fixing pitchers? Do you think he can get a second-year player option?

Mark P

  • This looks like the classic case of a Scott Boras short-term contract with multiple opt-outs.  Cease’s secondary metrics are better than his ERA indicates, but you’re right that he isn’t exactly heading into free agency on a high note, unless he really turns it on in September.

No NY baseball?

  • How likely is it both NY teams are sitting at home in October?

Mark P

  • Will both New York teams make the playoffs?

    Both make (32.6% | 199 votes)
    Both miss (26.8% | 164 votes)
Yankees make, Mets miss (24.4% | 149 votes)
Mets make, Yankees miss (16.0% | 98 votes)

Bosox Fan 1

  • Does time on the IL count as Major League service tim

Mark P

  • Yes

Golfer

  • Will the return of the injured Astros be enough to keep them in the playoffs?

Mark P

  • My guess is that Houston makes it, since they’ve done a terrific job of at least treading water with so many key players missing

bobthebuilder

  • Mike Elias has led the Orioles to 3 winning seasons in a row for the 1st time since the 70’s. I think his leash has to be longer than this offseason. Are the cries to fire him overblown or are you getting into that camp?

Mark P

  • Some serious questions need to be asked about the Orioles’ roster-building, but overall, I lean more towards 2025 being a “year from hell” than a sign that this team is going to spiral back into long-term irrelevance.

My guess is that Elias has earned more time from ownership, but keep in mind that Rubenstein is still something of a wild card.  Maybe he has a mind to hire his own GM to see what a fresh voice can do with all of the talent within the organization.

Phree Phallin’

  • put aside the potential seriousness of the situation; big picture we all want wheeler just to get healthy. But purely baseball, if he’s out for an extended period or the rest of the yr, does that cost the Phils making the playoffs with their inconsistent offense?

Mark P

  • Philly is a virtual lock to make the playoffs, but losing Wheeler obviously is a huge blow to their chances of actually winning a championship.

Boys in Blue

  • Does the Dodgers’ sweep of the Padres say more about the status of the Dodgers or Padres? Or neither?

Mark P

  • It’s another sign that the Dodgers aren’t going anywhere.  All the momentum in the world seemed to be on SD’s side going into the series, but now the Dodgers have clinched the season series in emphatic fashion.

6 into 4

  • Assuming the Jays rotation stays injury free (big if of course) who are the going to the odd men out in the postseason?  Presume Lauer will go to the pen despite the impressive season but who else of the other five will be dropped?

Jesse Barfield’s Arm

  • Should Jays fans pump the breaks on presuming Bieber and Scherzer are locks for the 3 man rotation in Oct?  Shane is still recovering from TJ and Mad Max is a thumb injury away from the 60 day IR.

Mark P

  • The Blue Jays are in the odd position of both having “too many” starters on paper, and also having Gausman as the only one of those six guaranteed to be a playoff starter.  As noted in these messages, Bieber hasn’t pitched a big league game in over 16 months, Scherzer is an injury risk, Lauer is the easiest to transition to a relief role, and Berrios/Bassitt have had their shares of shaky outings.

The good news is that the Jays have several weeks to figure this out.  Perhaps the situation solves itself in a positive way (two starters get red-hot in September and become obvious locks for a playoff rotation) or in a negative way (injuries, struggles, etc.)

Canada

  • Day for Night or Trouble At the Henhouse?

Mark P

  • Both are fine choices, but Day For Night is one of my favorite albums ever.

Wait, this is a Tragically Hip question….FAVOURITE albums ever.

Dean

  • Likely or unlikely that Rays new ownership moves on from Neander and Cash?  I, for one, think it’s time for a leadership change.

Mark P

  • Reports indicate that the new owners are likely to keep everything intact in the baseball ops department, and with good reason.
  • If the Rays actually let Neander or Cash go, both would find new jobs within minutes.

Neto

  • What does my extension look like?

Mark P

  • Neto is a Super Two player, and will only be arb-eligible for the first of four times this upcoming offseason.  So with team control already established through 2029, the Angels might not feel the need to lock him up just yet.

Also of note: a look at the MLBTR Contract Tracker indicates that the Angels haven’t been very active on the extension front for the last decade.  https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/contracttracker?name=&team=LAA&position…

  • Trout is the big exception, of course, but his situation is obviously very different from Neto’s.  The Halos’ other extensions have been mostly shorter-term deals either covering arb years or with veteran players.

With this in mind, it will interesting to see if the team tries to extend Neto, as he has done a lot to make himself look like a building block for LAA

Cleveland

  • What would you like to see us do in the offseason? Has it just been some bad injury luck with prospects this year? Delauter and Brito were supposed to be big features of this team.

Mark P

  • The Guardians have around $37.2MM on the books for next season (thanks to RosterResource!) and that isn’t counting arb raises or whatever might happen with Clase’s contract if he is suspended.

I realize that expecting the Guards to suddenly break the bank is a fool’s errand, but investing in at least one proper everyday player who can legit hit, and one solid starting pitcher would go a long way.  The Gimenez trade alone cleared so much long-term money off Cleveland’s books that they can reinvest that cash into some much-needed hitting help.

Guest

  • Basallo is a ML’er now. Shouldn’t there be another 10-12 prospects called up now that we’re past the middle of August?

Mark P

  • No doubt.  Even going into my usual weekend duties, I was fully expecting to be writing at least one “Orioles call up Basallo” or “Orioles call up Beavers” post, for instance.

Fat Guy

  • What direction do you think the Twins will go in 2026?

Mark P

  • The front office will be trying to contend, but they very likely won’t have much (or any) spending room again.  Lopez’s contract makes him a prime candidate to be traded, but Ryan is inexpensive enough that I think he’d only be moved if another team offers the moon and stars.

Brewers GM Arnold

  • Chances I trade Peralta this off-season?

Mark P

  • I wouldn’t be entirely shocked since that’s just how the Brewers roll.  But, Peralta at $8MM is a such a huge bargain that it carries particular value to a Brewers team working within a limited budget.  As we saw with Adames, the Brewers are willing to let a talented player just reach free agency, and I suspect this might be the case here with Peralta.

Milwaukee’s pitching depth perhaps adds more fuel to the idea that Peralta could be dealt, but there’s a difference between depth and the certainty that Peralta offers as a surefire frontline guy

Chris young

  • Do the rangers have a legit shot or should we look forward to the off season? What is the rangers current cbt number for next season?

Mark P

  • Texas has a lot of money off the books, and RosterResource has them close to $100MM under the 2026 tax line.  So that shouldn’t be an issue, even if it isn’t quite clear yet if they’ve ducked under the line for 2025.

And as for their playoff chances now, things are getting ugly.  While the Yankees have their issues and nobody in the wild race is exactly on fire, I think the Rangers’ struggles have put them too far behind the eight ball

Marky Mark

  • Whats on the Sunday Chat Playlist?

Mark P

  • That earlier Tragically Hip question inspired me to put on some “Day For Night” tracks.

Kris Bryant

  • How long do you think Kris Bryant will be out with his back issues? I was diagnosed with the same sa

Mark P

  • At this point, Bryant’s career may well be over.  It’s hard to see him returning for anything close to a full season, as if he does get back for 2026, I worry it’ll be another case where he has to shut things down within a month.

Kokonuts

  • Best guesses on where Nathaniel Lowe lands?

Kyle

  • It’s pretty much a given that Lowe makes it through waivers, correct? Gut feeling of where he ends up?

Mark P

  • Pretty much everyone immediately guessed Boston the moment Lowe was DFA’d

Bubba chandler

  • When will I finally be promoted?

Mark P

  • Any day now. Especially with Heaney being moved to the bullpen.

Kramer

  • Is Falter still under arbitration next season with KC? If so, I guess he enters the rotatin discussion and replaces Lorenzen. Really liking what we’ve seen from Bergert. Will Kolak come up sometime this season with KC?

Mark P

  • Falter is arb-controlled through 2028, so he’s a long-term piece.  Between Ragans, Wacha, Lugo, Cameron, Bubic, and now Falter and a couple of others, KC has plenty of rotation depth.
  • Makes for some interesting trade possibilities this winter, even with the “you can never have enough pitching” caveat

Alex

  • Thoughts on whether you think the Twins fire sale was the right call? I’m a twins fan and I thought every trade was good except Varland. This years team was headed nowhere

Mark P

  • They traded mostly impending free agents, and I think moving Correa was a wise move in the big picture.  So from a pure baseball perspective, I get the logic of the trades, especially since they brought in a lot of young talent and a lot of MLB-ready players.

But it doesn’t erase the fact that it’s unfortunate that it came to this, since this Twins team seemed to have all the momentum in the world coming off the 2023 season.  And, these kind of payroll cuts are yet another morale-killer to a fanbase that has had to put with a lot.

Jays Fan

  • Is Eric Lauer under Jays control in 2026?

Mark P

  • Yes, he has one remaining year of arbitration eligibility.

Frankie Montas

  • Has any underperforming baseball player like me ever turned down a large player option to have more opportunity to play elsewhere? The handwriting is on the wall for me: I’m going to be buried behind many more talented starting pitchers if I say in Queens.

Mark P

  • Montas is surely not opting out and leaving $17MM on the table.  His next contract wouldn’t be worth near that much.

Giants

  • Do Giants look to add another big bat this offseason to go with Devers do you think?

Mark P

  • Probably.  Though, it isn’t a great look that the offense is still such a problem even after such heavy investments in Adames, Chapman, and Lee
  • And the investment of taking on Devers’ contract, of course

Commander McBragg

  • Are you worried (like myself) that the Cubs won’t even make the playoffs this year.  They sure have looked terrible lately!!

Mark P

  • The Cubs still have a healthy lead on the rest of the wild card field.  Despite their struggles, I think Milwaukee almost going unbeaten for like a month made Chicago’s struggles (which are real, don’t get me wrong) look a bit worse than they actually are

Password

  • September cup of coffee? He’s already on the 40 man

Mark P

  • Now that he’s started playing first base, Garcia as a call-up might be Boston’s preferred option than seeing what Nathaniel Lowe can provide in a new environment.

Kyle

  • In light of the article the other day about Story opting out, where would you put the odds of that actually happening, and what kind of contract could he be looking at in this years free agent market?

Mark P

  • I agree with Darragh’s take that Story will likely stay in his contract.  Maybe if Story goes scorching hot in September he might consider it, but it is much more likely that he stays in Boston rather than risk free agency

Guest

  • Who has had the worst season, however you choose to define it? Braves, Rockies, Giants, Orioles, Twins? Someone else?

Mark P

  • Expectations were so high for the Braves and Orioles that they’re certainly the biggest disappointments of this group.

Perry

  • Should I focus more on Starting pitchers or relievers?

Mark P

  • Rotation help is always more valuable but relievers are cheaper and (relatively) easier to find.  Starters have to be the first priority since if you can lock down at least one rotation spot, it has a good cascading effect on everything else

Braves Homer

  • AA trade Profar for salary relief and go after Tucker?

Mark P

  • What team would want to take on Profar’s contract, and before you say “the Padres,” remember that they have payroll limitations of their own.  Signing Tucker to a mega-deal would be out of character for the Braves, and seemingly unlikely for a team that made a point of getting under the tax line last winter

Tommy Lasorda meets God!!!

  • Funniest thing you remember seeing in a game?

Mark P

  • Forget about perfect games or four-homer games….I was at the “Alejandro Kirk stole a base” game the other night

Free agent buzz

  • What do the Dbacks do this offseason. They moved their pending FAs, but feels like a full rebuild would be a weird move.

Mark P

  • They’re not rebuilding.  They’ve got a good amount of money off the books and, while their payroll be lower than it was in 2025, they’ll still have some money to spend on upgrades.

Fixing the pitching is the obvious priority, since they’ll need at least one starter and multiple relievers.

Hawk

  • With Stearns in NY, who is the main brain behind the Brewers success?

Mark P

  • This kind of consistent year-after-year succeeds needs a lot of people to keep the wheels turning rather than just one singular executive.

Obviously the Mets made a point of recruiting Stearns and the Cubs hired Counsell away, but it’s interesting that you haven’t really seen the kind of coaching/front office hiring exodus from Milwaukee that you’ve seen with other teams making a point to hire people away from the Rays, Guardians, Dodgers, etc.

Gaurdiansjoe

  • I know Bazzana just got to triple a, any chance he and Delauter get a call up this year to get their feet wet? Falling further and further back, might as well try for top 3 in next years rookie of the year

Mark P

  • DeLauter might be out for the season due to his hamate surgery, and the Guardians probably don’t see any reason to rush Bazzana just yet.
  • There does seem to be a decent chance Bazzana is Cleveland’s Opening Day second baseman, if the Guardians want to make a bold PPI move

Guidey Bud

  • Soderstrom in LF has been dreadful… does the presence of Rooker and emergence of Kurtz block him from meaningful MLB at bats ?

Mark P

  • The public defensive metrics have him at +1 DRS and +2 OAA.  The Fielding Bible people don’t exactly have him on their radar, but if Soderstrom can provide that kind of passable defense, he’ll work out just fine in left field

By Darragh McDonald | August 15, 2025 at 12:00pm CDT

Darragh McDonald

  • Hello, subscribers.
  • Thank you, as always, for being so wonderful to us. It is greatly appreciated.
  • Anthony is off this week. Sorry you're stuck with me.
  • Let's talk baseball.

Arthur Dent

  • What’s your prediction on how things are going to shake out in the AL West?  Can the Stros tread water enough the rest of the season to take the division?

Darragh McDonald

  • It's obviously pretty tight but I would lean Seattle at the moment.
  • Houston has had so many injuries. They've somehow managed to win in spite of them, but it's possible there's a point where they run out of steam.
  • Seattle, on the other hand, made some nice deadline upgrades and has some juice.
  • Just a guess though. It could obviously go either way. Can't predict this sport. Baseball is dumb/amazing like that.

Wyatt Langford extension?

  • With Roman Anthony getting extended by the Red Sox, have you heard anything re: Chris Young looking into signing Wyatt Langford to a long term deal? I think this would be a great time to do it before he breaks out and before players like Acuña will be seeking new contracts. Thoughts? What would his deal look like?

Darragh McDonald

  • I haven't heard anything concrete but it would make sense for them to try. He's only going to get more expensive as he pushes towards free agency.
  • He'll have two years of service after this year. The top guys in that service class are Tatis and Witt, who got to $300ish.
  • Langford hasn't quite got to the superstar level of those guys, however.
  • He'd probably come in underneath them right now. But like I said, he'll get more expensive if he keeps playing well and pushing towards the open market.

MLBTR Chat Transcript

By Steve Adams | August 12, 2025 at 12:43pm CDT

Steve Adams

  • Good morning! We’ll get going at 1pm CT, but as always, feel free to submit questions ahead of time.
  • Good afternoon! Quiet day and I’m finished eating lunch, so let’s get underway early.

Piratus maximus

  • What is Pittsburgh doing?  Trading Hayes looks like starting over. Will Cruz still be around when they’re competitive again?

Steve Adams

  • I don’t think dumping the rest of an unwanted Hayes contract constitutes starting over. If they traded Paul Skenes, that would’ve been starting over.Cruz only has three years of club control after this one, and I don’t expect the Bucs to compete in 2026, so I’d lean toward him being traded before the Pirates are genuinely competitive again, though.

He Hate Me

  • So, just saving money this off-season and still trying to compete in 2026? Or do the Twins enact a full tear-down, including trades of cost-controlled talent like Joe Ryan (whose value could plummet with an injury in 2026)?

Steve Adams

  • I don’t think we can really know which direction they’ll go until their sale process has been completed. If they don’t have a new owner in place — or at least an agreement with a buyer — by the offseason, I’d expect each of Joe Ryan, Ryan Jeffers, Trevor Larnach and Bailey Ober (among others) to be kicked around the trade market this winter — especially the first two.

Frisco Kid

  • What are your thoughts about the Giants promoting Bryce Eldridge to the majors?

Steve Adams

  • He only has 150ish PAs in AAA and they’ve been good, not great, with a 32% strikeout rate. I get the frustration with the big league club and the excitement to see the org’s top prospect, but a 20-year-old who’s K’ing in nearly a third of his Triple-A plate appearances seems like he’d be overmatched in the majors.Plus, calling him up would mean adding him to the 40-man two years earlier than they need to in order to protect him from the Rule 5. You’re eating up a 40-man roster spot for the coming offseason.

Earlier in the year, I thought the Giants would call up Eldridge if they were contending and he was mashing in AAA. I tend to think now that the better move is to wait until 2026. It’s not like he’s absolutely forcing the issue with dominant play in Sacramento.

Gaurdiansjoe

  • How long are we gonna wait to know if we have our starting pitcher (Ortiz) or our all star closer (Classe)? Should we just assume they are both done for the year? For ever? Seems like we should of heard something, hopefully something good.

Steve Adams

  • They’re on administrative leave until Aug. 31, so I doubt we’ll hear anything before then. My guess — and it is a total guess, just based on how prior league investigations regarding a variety of topics have played out — is that on 8/31, the league just announces that the leave has been extended through the end of the regular season (or possibly through the World Series), and they’ll quietly continue the investigation with an eye toward announcing discipline in the offseason.

Steve Cohen

  • Will the Pirates ever call up Bubba Chandler this year?

Steve Adams

  • After Aug. 15, players no longer have enough days on the calendar to exhaust their rookie status this year. I’m guessing that on 8/20 or so, Chandler is magically ready for the majors, and he’ll then head into ’26 in position to break camp on the roster and possibly net the Pirates a draft pick via the Prospect Promotion Incentives, depending on ROY voting.

KevininFla

  • Do you believe the Padres will make a serious effort to re-sign Michael King in the offseason?

Steve Adams

  • I’d be very surprised if they don’t make a real effort, yes. Cease seems likelier to go, between the two

Peace Love & pancakes

  • Look ahead to next year for the Brewers — what might they be seeking in free agency? Do they go with Vaughn at first? Durbin at third? Ortiz at Short? Wait for the middle infield rookies to mature? If they spend any money (always a big if), what night they seek out?

Steve Adams

  • I just don’t expect them to look to spend all that much. Vaughn has all but staked his claim to the 1B job in 2026 with his absurd turnaround. I could see them looking for some left-side infield help, but there aren’t many great options out there in that regard anyhow aside from Bregman or Suarez, I suppose, and the Brewers aren’t ponying up for either.I imagine they’ll be open to adding a veteran starter on a one-year deal and they’ll look for some bench/bullpen upgrades who won’t break the bank. They’ll at least listen to offers on Freddy Peralta, since he’s only signed one more year and that’s just what the Brewers do. But in general, I just wouldn’t get your hopes up for a big-money acquisition. It’s not how they typically operate, and based on how much success they have every year, I’m not really sure it’s how they need to operate.

Joshua

  • Thoughts on the Nats starter Brad Lord? He’s been a pleasant surprise, do you think he could be a legit #3 starter? Thanks.

Steve Adams

  • He’s been better than I’d have expected, but it’s below-average strikeout levels with good-not-great command and pretty poor chase/swinging-strike rates. A genuine No. 3 mid-rotation arm would surprise me. He feels more like a borderline No. 4/5 guy. He’s having a pretty similar season to Mitchell Parker’s 2024, granted with a lot more grounders (but also more walks and hit batters)

Free Agency

  • Does Zac Gallen get a QO next year? Fair to assume King and Woodruff do, injuries notwithstanding?

Steve Adams

  • All three will get qualifying offers.

AJ Preller

  • Tell me I’m not dumb enough to Luis Arreaz to a long-term contract…No power, doesn’t walk, below average defense and speed… money could be spent in other places, right?

Steve Adams

  • I’ve gotten a bunch of questions from Padres fans about this, seemingly because one Bleacher Report writer predicted Arraez will get something like six years and $90MM?I think Arraez’s contract will come in at maybe half that — I find most of that opinion piece’s predictions to be pretty unrealistic in one direction or another — and I don’t expect the Padres to be the ones to make a big push to re-sign him.

JV

  • Do you think Verlander actually pitches next season? He says he plans to, but the issue would be what team would want him? Posey said at the press conference for JV he hopes to resign him in the offseason. Do you think thats still true?

Steve Adams

  • Verlander had a rocky start but has a 4.02 ERA, 20 K% and 7.5 BB% over his past 16 starts. I don’t see why teams would think he’s incapable of pitching another year. If he wants to pitch, someone will sign him to a one-year deal. It’d probably come in under this year’s $15MM salary, but the idea that he’s cooked or something feels more like people reacting to his 1-9 record, which is more an indictment on the Giants’ roster than on Verlander’s ability.

Arodyankees

  • Does Trent Grisham get a QO??

Steve Adams

  • It’d be defensible, but I lean against it. The Yankees are luxury payors, so they’d only get a pick after the 4th round if he rejected and signed elsewhere. That’s not especially great compensation, and they probably don’t want Grisham taking up a $22MM salary on day one of the offseason when they already have Judge, Dominguez and Spencer Jones in the outfield mix.

Oz

  • The Braves will have $32 million to spend when Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias depart via free agency.  What moves do you think Alex Anthopoulos will make this Winter?

Steve Adams

  • That’s not really true. I mean, it’s true that the $16MM salaries of Ozuna and Iglesias are off the books, but all of that money will be eaten up organically by raises elsewhere on the roster.Spencer Strider’s salary jumps from $4MM to $20MM. Reynaldo Lopez goes from $8MM to $14MM. Jurickson Profar from $12MM to $15MM. (Well, he only got half that salary this year with the suspension, so technically from $6MM to $15MM). Aaron Bummers goes $3.5MM to $9.5MM.

The arb class is small, with several non-tender candidates (Kelenic, Eli White, Dane Dunning, Nick Allen) — but Dylan Lee will get a raise from just over $1MM to something between $2-3MM as well.

  • The Braves have $159MM on next year’s books, and that’s before picking up options on Chris Sale, Pierce Johnson, Ozzie Albies and Tyler Kinley. That’ll bump that $159MM figure to $191MM. ($193MMish, after accounting for Dylan Lee)
  • The Braves don’t really spend aggressively in free agency anyhow, so I’m not sure it matters a ton. I’d expect them to be more active on the trade market as they look for upgrades at shortstop and perhaps a bat to cycle through the OF/DH

RoxTalks

  • Does Cody Bellinger pick up his player option? My gut says yes based on his slightly lackluster batted ball profile, but he’s had an above average year at the dish and at multiple positions in the field so I could see him declining it and seeking more on the open market.

Steve Adams

  • No chance he picks it up. It’s a net $20MM decision for him, and he’ll trounce that mark in free agency.
  • Bellinger has been an above-average bat for three years now. The injury is behind him. He’s playing good defense at multiple spots. He’ll be 30 for most of next year. He should pursue — and will likely find — something like a five-year deal.

Mets4Life

  • What are the chances Mets resign Alonso now that he’s soon to be the franchise’s all time HR leader?

Steve Adams

  • The Mets didn’t want to sign him long-term last offseason, and I don’t see any reason they’d be more excited about doing so now that he’s a year older. I expect Alonso to decline his player option, hit the open market (this time without a QO), and sign elsewhere for something like $100-110MM over four years. If the same cycle plays out, where he goes out seeking a massive deal and is left standing in February, maybe the Mets will circle back with another opt-out deal.

Bobby M

  • Adolis Garcia DFA candidate soon? He’s been absolutely brutal this season and the team would be better without him on the roster. He’ll be non tendered so why not see if someone picks up the salary

Steve Adams

  • I don’t expect him to be DFA, no — though I wouldn’t be totally stunned if they put him on outright waivers later in the month to see if someone will claim him.I do agree he’s a non-tender candidate, but they can run him through waivers without committing to cutting him. If he clears, they can hang onto him and see if he catches fire in September and restores a little trade juice. They’re stuck paying him either way, so may as well hang onto him and see if there’s any sort of market early in the offseason.

K Dubs

  • Do the Phillies promote Crawford after Aug 15?  He absolutely deserves the look; Batting .330 and .416 OBP in 94 games.  And if so, what does the OF look like with Bader, Marsh, Kepler in the mix and heavy on LH hitters?

Steve Adams

  • Yeah I expect he’ll be up once we get past the 2026 rookie cutoff there, and I imagine the Phillies will just DFA Kepler once they decide to bring Crawford up. It hasn’t been a good fit. No one’s going to claim the rest of the contract, of course, so he’d be released in that scenario.

romorr

  • So after 3 IL visits and a bad year of pitching, what’s Eflins market look like? See too many people thinking he still gets 3-4 years @ 20 million+. Seems like the perfect 1 year guy to rebuild value.

Steve Adams

  • I doubt I’d have predicted much more than 3/66  even with a healthy season. I agree, he’s a one-year guy — maybe two with an opt-out, I suppose.

Steve

  • How long are you going to run an ad in between every question and answer? Its terribly annoying and to me is rapidly causing me to skip your chat altogether.

Steve Adams

  • Genuinely do not know what you’re referencing. There shouldn’t be ads in the chat, and no one has ever complained about this before. Send us an email through the contact form with more details?

Bo’s Brother

  • I know it’s a few months away, but what’s the ballpark for a Josh Naylor contract this offseason? Will he best Christian Walker’ contract? Naylor is a few years younger, but Walker put up better numbers leading into free agency.

Steve Adams

  • I think he can top the total guarantee but probably not the AAV. Naylor is a hard one to peg, but in a world where Andrew Benintendi gets $75MM, I’d be looking to match or top that. He’s a better hitter who’s also hitting the market at an uncommonly young age (as Benintendi did).

Re: Bellinger

  • If/when he declines his option, are the Yankees still obligated to pay him the $5 million buyout?

Steve Adams

  • Yes

Jonny Venters

  • What does a Murakami deal look like?

Steve Adams

  • It’s too early to tell. He’s missed most of the NPB season with an oblique injury and only just returned. I touched on Murakami in the followup to our Power Rankings last week:
    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/08/2025-26-mlb-free-agent-power-ra…

Jake

  • Have we ever seen a contending team make an acquisition blunder like the Cubs did with Mike Soroka? Velo was trending down on a pitcher who has an injury history and they made the trade anyways?

Steve Adams

  • The velo dip was pretty notable, but the Cubs were obviously comfortable enough with their review of his medicals.I don’t think their big blunder was necessarily in acquiring Soroka at all, but rather in having him stand as the only real addition to a rotation that’s in glaring need of more help.

The Cubs (and Tigers and several others) seem paralyzed by the notion of giving up top prospects in a trade. The entire industry as a whole — Padres, Mariners and maybe the Phillies excluded — seems to be in this boat. Front offices are so protective of prospects that it’s reached the point of absurdity, in my view.

The number of guys who’ve gone from untouchable to sell-low trade chips and eventual DFA fodder is staggering. The MLB front office groupthink regarding prospects is so over the top.

Raz Sox

  • Tanner Houck a non-tender?

Steve Adams

  • I lean that way. I could see keeping him if he’d been good when healthy and then had the TJS, but he was maybe the worst starter in the league. Obviously, the elbow health (or lack thereof) probably contributed to that, but you’d be tendering him for something like $4.5MM to $5MM knowing he won’t pitch next year and knowing he’d command the same salary in arb the following season. If Boston feels Houck’s 2027 is worth two years and $9-10MM, I suppose that’s defensible. (2024 Houck certainly was, obviously) But a non-tender seems reasonably likely to me.

JErry DIpoto Mind Trick

  • the Ms have to make a real effort to sign Naylor, right? He’s a perfect fit and we don’t have any real 1B prospects in the system

Steve Adams

  • I’m sure they’ll make some effort, but I don’t know that the lack of high-end 1B prospects in their system means much. The free agent market this year will have Ryan O’Hearn, Pete Alonso, Paul Goldschmidt, Rhys Hoskins, Luis Arraez and, of course, Naylor. Trade market could have Nate Lowe, Ryan Mountcastle, Triston Casas, Alec Burleson and others.
  • So sure, if they like Naylor well enough, absolutely make a run at keeping him. But I don’t think it’s any sort of colossal misstep if they decide they don’t want to go 4-5 years on him and pivot to something shorter-term.

Mountcastle

  • Mountcastle and Mayo for Luis Robert.  Who says no?

Steve Adams

  • Baltimore

Mike

  • Yanks offer weaver 3-45 with a player option for another 12 right now weaver take it?

Steve Adams

  • That’s not a 3-year, $45MM offer. That’s a 4-year, $57MM offer with the final season being a player option. If they offer that, yes, Weaver should take it.

Ben and Jerry Rice cream

  • Why are top 100 lists sleeping on Dakota Jorden ? He’s got Major league talent and is kicking butt

Steve Adams

  • He’s hitting well as a former college player playing against younger opponents in Low-A and still K’ing at a 23% clip. He struck out a ton in college. He’s striking out a lot considering the opposition he’s facing, too.
  • An NCAA player who’s more than a year removed from being drafted within the first four rounds should be beating up Class-A pitching. Statistically, nothing he’s doing is particularly crazy. For what it’s worth, MLB.com just ranked him sixth among Giants’ prospects in their re-rank of all 30 systems today, though.

DTownWarrior78

  • I am totally peeved at Scott Harris and the Tigers FO for not going after E. Suarez, as he was the bat that could really stretch this lineup. But with the moves that this FO did make, do you think we have enough to make a “serious” run this postseason?

Steve Adams

  • It’s a toss-up between Tigers and Cubs for most disappointing deadline, in my view. I have a hard time seeing this bullpen making a deep run, but they have a knack for getting high-end performance out of some unexpected relievers. Maybe they can finally get Kyle Finnegan to miss bats the way you’d expect someone with his velo/stuff to. Maybe they can get Rafael Montero back to 2022 form.I don’t really see it, personally, but I’m always open to being proven wrong — which happens plenty! I think they should’ve done more.

Darragh and I talked about this again on the podcast episode that’ll drop tomorrow, because we had lots of questions about the Tigers’ pedestrian deadline.

Splashy Cubs

  • Cubs need an off season splash especially if they lose Tucker so who do they get?  Bellinger reunion or someone else?

Steve Adams

  • They’ve got Busch at 1B and an outfield with Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcantara. They clearly didn’t want to move Caissie at the deadline.I don’t think they’d shell out five years and $100MM+ for Bellinger. (Someone will) If they make a big move, a more legitimate run at Bregman or a quality rotation arm seems more feasible.

ccsilvia

  • Prediction on whether Edwin Diaz exercises his 18.5M player option or hits the market?

Steve Adams

  • Easy call to turn down the 2/37 left on his deal and test free agency again.

Pablo Lopez

  • This question is based on an earlier response. Did I just not come off the top of your head, or do you think Joe Ryan is more likely to be traded than I? If so, why? Thanks for the chats. They’re a lot of fun.

Steve Adams

  • Depends on how he finishes the season, but if Lopez doesn’t make it back, or he makes it back but has diminished results, it’s not crazy to me to think they’d hang onto him and shop him at next year’s deadline. (Again, assuming the Twins don’t have a new owner in place and thus continue trending toward the rebuild side of things)

Miguel Andujar

  • With this season I am having am I better than Torres and can match his $12-$15 million annual salary?

Steve Adams

  • Torres was 27 this past offseason. Andujar will be 31 in March. And his rate stats are largely attributable to being shielded from RHP to an extent. He’s decimated lefties and been a league-average bat against righties. He doesn’t have much/any defensive value. I don’t see how he gets into Gleyber range on a one-year deal.

Andrew

  • If he opts out, would the Tigers seriously consider taking another run at Bregman?

Steve Adams

  • He will opt out, and I expect the Tigers to chase after him again, yes.

bmcferren

  • Luis Robert gets a major league contract this offseason or just a minor league invite?

Steve Adams

  • The White Sox will probably exercise his option, which is insane to me, but that was their thinking behind not trading him. He’d get a big league deal if they declined it, though.

WeNeedtoFindNimmo

  • So if Diaz opts out, what does he get?  Would think he is probably getting around $20m/season for another 3-4 years… and I don’t think the Mets are going to lose him given he’s been a success in NY

Steve Adams

  • Yeah, I think around 4/80. I also think it’ll come from someone other than the Mets unless Steve Cohen personally steps in. Signing a reliever to a long-term deal at $20MM annually feels like the antithesis of the David Stearns baseball operations playbook.

SandyEggo

  • Laureano’s option get exercised? He’s been excellent in 2025 and 6.5 won’t break the bank.

Steve Adams

  • Definitely exercised, barring some major injury

Medical malpractice lawyer

  • I get teams like to sometimes hide/downplay injuries publicly, but two years in a row now the Astros have had “minor injuries” turn into nearly year long absences. Is this medical malpractice, or simply publicly being shady?

Steve Adams

  • Houston has for years been the least forthcoming team in the game when it comes to the health of their players. They did recently start (finally) issuing weekly medical updates on their injured guys, however.

Pirates

  • Will the Pirates trade Skenes in the off season, or at next years deadline?

Steve Adams

  • I doubt either. Probably 2+ years before they get to really considering that (and only if the franchise is still toiling)

Kyle

  • If the Red Sox wanted to move Yoshida in the offseason, how much money would they have to eat to get someone to take him?

Steve Adams

  • Probably close to $30MM of the $36MM he’s still owed? Jesse Winker got $7.5MM on a one-year deal last winter with the same skill set and coming off a better year. Yoshida feels like a guy who might get a year and $5MM or so. If he has a big finish, maybe they only need to eat like $25MM or so, but we’re talking the majority either way.

Astros Infield

  • SOMEONE is going to have to be traded during the offseason, right?  I don’t see how otherwise everyone fits.

Steve Adams

  • I could see them making Christian Walker or Isaac Paredes available — probably preferring to move the former.

CubanMissileCrisis

  • Would the Sox consider a QO for Chapman? He’s older than rope but probably been the best closer in baseball this season, no?

Steve Adams

  • I was queueing up a “he’s already received one in the past and thus can’t get another one,” but he’s been traded and extended at prior points where he’d have received one, so he surprisingly is still fair game for one.I have to think that given his age, he’d accept. Accepting a QO for him would also immediately give him the all-time AAV record for a reliever. Nice little perk!

It wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world to make the offer, but $22MM (or thereabouts) is more than he’d get on a one-year deal in free agency, so I feel like they’ll probably pass on doing so. Good as he’s been, I’m not sure even the Red Sox believe he can suddenly sustain a 7% walk rate after sitting 14.5% or higher in each of the four prior seasons.

AA

  • How big of a return can Alex get for Sean Murphy this off-season? I assume Walcott is not happening? Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?!

Steve Adams

  • No, not getting Sebastian Walcott for three years of Sean Murphy at $45MM. It’s nice value, sure, but it’s not like there’s $50MM of surplus value there or anything.I’m not entirely convinced they trade him. Could just go Baldwin/Murphy at DH/C next year.

In general, while I think the remaining Murphy money is fine, I don’t expect that the Braves would be able to command any true top-tier prospects if they move him. Swapping him for a big league SP on a team that has pitching depth and needs C help has some merit though.

JaysFan

  • Should Blue Jays fans enjoy this run with Bo, or do you think he will re-sign?

Steve Adams

  • I don’t think re-signing him is out of the question. They have $188MM on next year’s books but only $142MM the following season. They’re nearing the end of the Springer and Gausman deals. Bichette has been open about how he’d love to stay in Toronto and spend his career playing alongside Vlad. He’s probably playing his way into a contract upwards of $200MM, but the Jays can stomach that. Would be easier if they hadn’t taken on so much of that Andres Gimenez deal. Whoops.

By Steve Adams | August 11, 2025 at 2:01pm CDT

Steve Adams

  • Good afternoon! We'll get going at 2pm CT, but feel free to submit questions ahead of time if you prefer! Talk to everyone in a bit.
  • Hello! Let's get underway

Dirt

  • Michael Harris has gotten on track but Ozzie still isn't doing much with the bat. With Nacho Alvarez getting seasoned, do you think the Braves will pick up the option on Albies, then trade him or just let him walk? What will AA do about the starting rotation?

Steve Adams

  • I don't see any scenario where the Braves just buy him out and let him walk to save what would be a net $4MM. Even if they're just done with him, a team would absolutely trade for Albies at a year and $7MM -- especially with a subsequent option for the same amount.Terrible year (well, yearS, plural) or not, Albies is a 28-year-old former All-Star 2B with multiple 30-homer seasons under his belt.Conversely, open up our Contract Tracker -- included with your subscription! -- to check out what kind of position players a year and $7MM can buy you in free agency:
  • You're looking at bounceback shots in the dark for mid-30s veterans like AJ Pollock, Tommy Pham, Carlos Santana, Robinson Chirinos, etc. It's just not a compelling group, and it's only exacerbated in recent years as the general cost of signing free agents has increased.Add in the value the second $7MM option brings if Albies rebounds next year, and he'd still have legitimate trade value, even coming off a down year.
  • That's not to say they'd get a top-100 prospect or any kind of real farm-altering prospect, but they could get something with some actual value and not just completely need to dump the money he's owed.

Who gets to The Show 1st?

  • Who gets to The Show first? Bubba Chandler or Jonah Tong? When and why?

Steve Adams

    • Chandler. He's been in Triple-A for a full year now. Tong hasn't thrown a pitch in AAA (he's being promoted there today).
    • I'd imagine that after August 15, once there are few enough remaining days on the calendar that prospects who are called up can retain their rookie status heading into 2026, Chandler's developmental issues will magically be sorted out and he'll be in the majors

MLBTR Chat Transcript

By Mark Polishuk | August 10, 2025 at 9:00pm CDT

Mark P

  • After just one Weekend Chat session in all of July, consider this a bonus entry as a follow-up to yesterday’s chat.

Jason

  • Are the brewers for real???

Mark P

  • They’ve been “for real” for the better part of the decade.  Whether this is the Brewers team that breaks through to make some serious noise in October remains to be seen, but is is remarkable how this team keeps reinventing itself and remaining competitive.

Guest

  • While many teams went shopping for a dress to the party at the high end stores, the Royals found some gems at thrift store pricing.

Mark P

  • I also liked a lot of KC’s moves. It might be too little too late, but they addressed some needs in a pretty low-cost manner.

John

  • Is resigning Cedric Mullins a real possibility for the Orioles?

Mark P

  • If I’m the Orioles at this point, I go with the youth movement.  No more timeshares, no more splitting at-bats with veterans….let the kids play and see what they can do with everyday at-bats.
  • If you are adding a veteran, aim higher than Mullins for a real difference-maker in the regular lineup

Greg

  • Can the Mariners win world series?

Safeco Field Redux

  • So: How good are the M’s? Legitimate World Series contender?

Mark P

  • Absolutely.  Seattle might be the best overall team in baseball right now, give or take the Brewers.  So many other contenders have a clear weakness or two, but not the M’s (on paper)

AA

  • Which is more likely a Acuna extension or signing Bo?

Mark P

  • Acuna’s current deal keeps him under team control through 2028, as the Braves have club options (worth $17MM each) for both 2027-28.  Call me crazy, but I think the Braves will be picking those up. 🙂

As such, the team doesn’t really need to prioritize an extension this offseason.  Obviously the Braves have been as proactive as anyone in locking players up, but there isn’t any immediate urgency with Acuna.  Plus, Atlanta might want to wait until Acuna has a fully healthy season before considering a second extension.

  • So I guess by default, this makes Bichette slightly more likely, even if Anthopoulos traditionally doesn’t aim for those kind of pricey free agent deals.

White Sox Fan

  • How many years away are we from competing? Cam we compete every year instead of every so often?

Mark P

  • I haven’t loved everything the Sox have done in their rebuild, but they’ve gotten a decent amount of young talent in the fold.  The AL Central’s inconsistency could help the White Sox contend perhaps slightly sooner than expected, but I wouldn’t expect much from the next 2-3 seasons.

Judge

  • Is my future at first like Harper?

Mark P

  • Judge’s solid defense is the most underrated part of his game.  He is a plus right fielder, and while he didn’t do much defensively in center field last year, the fact that he could do it regularly was alone impressive (and helpful to New York’s overall lineup construction).
  • Barring injury concerns, I think the Yankees are fine with Judge in right field for the foreseeable future.  Especially if they’re keeping 1B earmarked for Ben Rice.

Nancy’s Friend Sluggo

  • Do you think if a miracle occurred and the Pirates offered Paul Skenes a market value contract that he would sign with them despite their annual second-division status?

Mark P

  • Only Skenes knows the answer to this for sure.  He’s made a solid amount of money in his career already via signing bonus and endorsements, so he could choose to bet on himself if he has doubts about Pittsburgh’s ability to compete.

However, betting on yourself and turning down a $200MM (or probably more) extension offer are two different things.  If the Pirates actually did go all in on making Skenes their guy and offering him a mega-deal, I would lean towards him taking it, just to lock in some generational wealth for himself.

Jack

  • Theres an issue with the Orioles about bringing up Beavers and Basallo. Some fans believe the Orioles are holding them back to preserve their rookie status. Question I have is about the 45 day rule. Does time spent on the roster in September count?

Mark P

  • Yep, all time spent on the MLB roster counts.

Josh

  • What are your early impressions of Luke Keaschall?

Mark P

  • He is apparently (checks notes) the greatest player in baseball history
  • In all seriousness, he’s been a fun story for the Twins and a real shot in the arm for a fanbase that was understandably miserable on this team after the deadline.  You can’t help but wonder how different 2025 might’ve been for Minnesota if Keaschall hadn’t gotten hurt.

Kwan

  • Any chance I get traded in the offseason? Maybe a hometown reunion with the Giants?

Mark P

  • Based on past precedent, I’d expect the Guardians to move Kwan during the 2027-28 season, when he is a year away from free agency.

Mrs Stowers

  • Have you or your fellow MLBTR Marlins haters changed your opinion about the team yet?  Better than you thought, right?

Mark P

  • None of us are Marlins haters.  We (and the rest of the baseball world) thought they weren’t going to be any good this year, but they’ve been proving a lot of people wrong over the last couple of months.  There’s now some hope for a full rebound as early as 2026, depending on how the offseason develops or if the front office feels the roster is ready to contend.

Chef J

  • Over easy eggs or scrambled eggs? Who ya got Mark?!

Mark P

  • Scrambled eggs all day every day

Gavin’s mom

  • Gavin Williams was soooo close to that no-no

Mark P

  • I looked this up in the wake of Williams’ near-miss. 2005 was the last MLB season without at least one no-hitter, so we’re overdue for a pitcher (or pitchers, in combined fashion) to have a day of days.
  • Tough break for Williams, but if you’re going to lose a no-hitter, giving up a homer to Juan Soto is a pretty respectable way to lose it

RP

  • What kind of contract does Devin Williams get given he was the best closer in baseball for years and has been terrible this year?

Mark P

  • I expect Williams to pursue one-year contracts, with the idea that he’ll rebound in 2026 and line himself up for a bigger multi-year deal during the 26-27 offseason.

For something like a one-year, $10MM deal, lots of teams will be willing to sign Williams.  He has major change of scenery potential, and most of his peripheral numbers (save for his barrel rate) are still quite good

flags

  • if the twins aren’t sold before the offseason do you see them slashing more payroll with trades of lopez, ryan, ober, jeffers, etc?

Mark P

  • Lopez is the only one that would actually represent big cash savings, since the others are still pretty inexpensive as arb-eligible players.  Ryan in particular is a big bargain, earning only $3MM in 2025 and controlled for two more years.

With this in mind, Lopez may be the likeliest of the group to be dealt, with Jeffers next just because he’s only controlled through 2026.  But even with Jeffers, he could be retained just because Vazquez is also a free agent this year and is certainly not being re-signed.

Yankees Hot Take

  • Volpe’s future is at second base due to his lack of arm strength and Lombard knocking on the door, right?

Mark P

  • A move to 2B could indeed stop Volpe’s downward slide defensively.  But, if he continues to scuffle at the plate, he’ll need to be a premium defender (wherever he plays) to retain his spot in the everyday lineup.

M. Betts

  • Will I be back in the OF next season?

Mark P

  • Betts has been very good defensively at shortstop, so I’d guess he stays put.  Whether or not his lack of hitting is directly tied to the position change is unclear.  Betts and the Dodgers probably want to run it back and see what happens in a year when Betts isn’t waylaid by a brutal illness during the spring.

Zach

  • Will this be the season that costs Aaron Boone his job?

Mark P

  • Boone’s next contract extension hasn’t actually kicked in yet, as it was signed in February and covers the 2026-27 seasons.

If the Yankees fully collapsed and missed the playoffs entirely, that might be enough to force ownership to make some kind of major move like a managerial change.  For as much loyalty as Boone has received, it might be that a culture change is needed in the clubhouse

Steve

  • Can you explain how trades that involve a “player to be named later” work? It there a timeline in which MLB requires the trades like that to be finalized? Could a team theoretically finalize a trade like that during the season but after the trade deadline or does it have to be finalized in the offseason? I’d love to hear about any known behind the scene stories of these trades.

Mark P

  • Usually a team provides the other club with a list of a few players to choose from as the PTBNL.  I believe the other team has to decide on its choice within six months of the trade.  This timeframe allows for players drafted that year to be eligible, since clubs cannot trade a player until at least six months after their draft date.

NY Mess

  • Stearns and Mendoza both seem really good at their jobs, but this team is pretty bad. Do these guys keep their jobs or is a shakeup coming in the offseason? There could be several hard years in front of this team given payroll, age, and lack of quality.

Mark P

  • It always felt like the Mets’ halfway approach to their pitching staff would catch up to them, but the biggest question mark has been the surprising lack of offense.  Lindor hasn’t looked right for a couple of months and may be playing hurt, Vientos’ production fell off sharply, and overall the lineup just hasn’t been the sum of its parts.
  • I don’t think either Stearns or Mendoza are going anywhere, but a change in hitting coaches seems very plausible.

Jeff

  • Why don’t we see more (or any) teams using openers? It seems like it worked wonders for teams like the Tigers and Rays in recent years. Does the data show otherwise?

Mark P

  • Deploying an opener/bulk pitcher for a regular turn in the rotation makes things harder on a pitching staff’s depth.  Over a short period or even a couple of months it can work fine, or even work wonders.  Over a full season, however, it has some drawbacks.

JeffyM

  • Where do you think Barger eventually ends up?  Is he a 3B or a RF long term?

Mark P

  • I’d install him at third base since that’s a tougher position to fill. There’s no harm in toggling Barger between both 3B and RF as circumstances dictate, for now.

NL playoffs

  • Which teams do you have making the postseason?  Any surprise team that could sneak in?

Mark P

  • Even with the Mets in freefall and the Cubs being shaky recently, the Reds are the only team that is in decent position right now to break into the playoff picture.  Cincinnati is the only non-playoff NL team with a winning record, since the Giants and Cardinals are both exactly .500

The way the Mets look right now, I’m hard-pressed to think much of their chances down the stretch.  Meanwhile, the Reds get Hunter Greene back this week.

Colson Montgomery

  • Colson make a run at top 3 rookie of the year with the way he is playing?  Who wins the award?

Mark P

  • Kurtz is walking away with the AL ROY.  Jacob Wilson will still get plenty of votes despite his injury, plus you’ve got Roman Anthony surging and Noah Cameron continuing to pitch well.  Montgomery is probably out of luck.

Verlander

  • Do I have anything left or is the inability of my teammates to put runs on the board. Today was a bad day for the lack of offense.

Mark P

  • The Giants’ lack of run support has certainly been an issue, but Verlander hasn’t helped himself with some shaky performances.  I dove into his under-the-hood numbers a bit during that post earlier tonight, and they’re not particularly impressive.

Whether or not he has anything left in the tank remains to be seen, as there’s probably some change of scenery potential there as well heading into 2026.  Verlander is such a name and has such a history of defying time in the past that some team will definitely be willing to give him another one-year deal.

Marky Mark

  • Whats on the Sunday Night Chat Playlist,?

Mark P

  • “Bad,” by U2

Nick

  • Who will land the biggest free agent deal this coming off-season?

Mark P

  • Tucker, by a comfortable margin

Grimace

  • Would my appearance rejuvenate the Mets or expose the transient limitations of my powers?

Mark P

  • I feel like this is a stand-up comedy bit from the 80’s, but…..why is that character called “Grimace,” anyway?  That’s a pretty weird name for a friendly mascot, isn’t it?

Nolan A

  • I should’ve moved on. And you told me to stay…. Ugh

Mark P

  • Arenado probably wasn’t checking in on the Weekend Chat when weighing his decisions about accepting a trade or not.

In all likelihood, Arenado probably has some regrets about not just accepting that trade to Houston.  That’s a real sliding doors moment that would’ve completely changed 2025 for both organizations.

Josh Naylor

  • Do you think the Mariners have a legitimate chance to sign Naylor before he hits free agency? What will it take?

Mark P

  • He’s a more viable option than Suarez to get re-signed, and if the M’s are willing to stretch the budget, I can see it happening.

Naylor turned 28 last June, he’s posted four above-average offensive years in a row, and he is on pace to break Rickey Henderson’s steals record.  The downside is that Naylor is a 1B-only player, his numbers have been more solid than elite, and he might want extra in order to stay in a pitcher-friendly environment like Seattle.

Dealer

  • If Cubs/SD end tied for WC seeds 4/5who gets home field since season seres went 3-3

Mark P

  • The next tiebreaker is inter-division record.

Rafael

  • Thoughts on the Phillies since Duran arrival have there chances gotten better to be a favorite to win the World Series

Mark P

  • Duran was one of my favourite deadline pickups for any team, and he’s a huge help to Philly’s chances.

Jet2Holiday

  • youre the GM of the Braves..do you hire from within or look outside the organization? If so who?
  • Are the Braves hiring their next manager from within or outside

Mark P

  • I think there’s a non-zero chance it’ll be John Gibbons, based on Anthopoulos’ long history with him.  But, who knows, any number of internal candidates could be on the radar, or other candidates on other teams could emerge

Friars

  • Was trading for all these starting pitchers necessary? (Including Miller) I get that we may have King and cease leave in free agency but it seems like a little much considering musgrove is coming back next year

Mark P

  • All together now…..you can never have too much pitching!
  • There’s also no guarantee that Musgrove returns as a frontline pitcher after his long layoff.

Chris

  • Is it crazy to think the Yanks offer Grisham a QO to see if he can do it again?

Mark P

  • Grisham’s not getting a QO, even if he has started hitting again.

Bobby Cox

  • Do you see the Braves trading Murphy since Drake will be ROY?

Mark P

  • Murphy is owed $45MM over the 2026-28 seasons, and there’s another $15MM club option attached for 2029.  He’s been good this year even with Baldwin understandably eating into the catching playing time.

Given how catching is in short supply around baseball, I don’t think Atlanta would have a ton of trouble finding interest in Murphy on the trade market.

  • Moving Murphy does put some extra pressure on Baldwin to keep it going, and retaining both catchers through 2026 also makes some sense.  This would guard against a sophomore slump for Baldwin, for instance

Nothin but Nats

  • Nathaniel Lowe… DFA candidate? Huge disappointment for the nats

Mark P

  • He’s certainly looking like a non-tender after the year, so an early DFA just to see if another team will eat some of his contract is very possible

Dalton Rushing

  • I’m gonna end up being a 3rd string jobber if I can’t learn to hit in the show, correct?

Mark P

  • Sure.  But I’ll need to see (way) more than 100 PA in the majors before making a call on Rushing

Carrie Halas

  • Way way back when they started the Mcdonald land ads he was the heavy and his full name was evil grimace

Mark P

  • This is the kind of delightful tidbit that I love finding in these chats.

Tim

  • odds of cards signing Helsley in the offseason

Mark P

  • Most players say they like playing for their old club, but Helsley was so particular about it that I think there’s a decent chance of a reunion.  Only Helsley or his agents know if Helsley’s interest extends to the point of perhaps being willing to give the Cardinals a minor hometown discount, but we’ll see how his market plays out

Chris A

  • Do you think there is a deal in place for the sale of the Twins? It would make sense to wait for the offseason to announce it. I am super worried without a new owner, the Twins will go into full rebuild

Mark P

  • There hasn’t much new news on the ownership front, but who knows what’s happening behind the scenes.  It could be that the Twins’ deadline moves were made just as a harbinger for a sale being announced sooner rather than later.  Or, perhaps the league wants to get the Rays’ sale finalized first before moving onto the Twins.

Tim

  • Which player of all time do you wish you could see play in person?

Mark P

  • Babe Ruth is the obvious answer.  Plus all of the great Negro League legends that most fans even of that era didn’t get a chance to see play.

  • I think Drake Baldwin is not a lock for ROY at all, Isaac Collins has had a lot to say about that the last two months. Nearly all stats favor Collins.

Mark P

  • Forgot to put this as an addendum to that previous post, but you’re right, I think Collins will win NL ROY.  He’s gotten himself in line for an everyday role with a Brewers team that is conquering baseball.

Desertdan

  • Is PCA’s post ASG slump a normal second half regression, or something worse?

Mark P

  • His strikeout and walk rates were both really rough even when he was crushing the ball in the first half, so some regression was inevitable.

Chris A

  • Wasn’t the bad guy the hamburgler?

Mark P

  • Yes, I just looked this up on Wikipedia.  As I understand it, Grimace seemed to be more of a main villain before his face turn, whereas the Hamburglar was more of a lower-level nuisance.  That probably made it easier to keep the Hambluglar (tm Vic Michaelis) a bad guy, since obviously McDonald’s can’t endorse the concept of stealing their food.

Cleveland

  • Your take on Bazzana? He was the 1.1, but so far seems like the weakest guy taken of the top picks.

Mark P

  • The Guardians just promoted him to Triple-A today, which makes sense since he’s been ripping up minor league pitching.

Obviously it is way WAY too early to pass judgement on anyone from the 2024 draft.  If Kurtz wasn’t breaking out so early and skewing the curve for everyone, Bazzana’s numbers (as a “normal” prospect) would look great.

Check your tiebreaker answer

  • Mark, second tiebreaker after head to head is NOT inter-division record—it is INTRA division record..

Mark P

  • You’re correct, that was a typo on my part

Rockies

  • Do we have a pathway to success in the future, or do we need to pick up more prospects?

Mark P

  • I don’t think the Rockies will get truly on track unless they modernize their operation and bring in a bunch of new front office voices from outside the organization.

Galcian

  • Do the Cardinals sign any one this Winter or do they stand pact?

Mark P

  • A blockbuster signing is doubtful, but I’m sure Bloom will bring in some talent in his first offseason in change
  • Time to wrap things up for the evening, now that we got a few more baseball questions in after our deep dive into McDonald’s character lore.  Thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and we’ll be back with more chatting next weekend.

MLBTR Chat Transcript

By Mark Polishuk | August 9, 2025 at 2:37pm CDT

Mark P

  • The Weekend Chat has returned! We’ll take a minute to get some questions build up, and then get into it…

Guards ball

  • Do you think the guardians have a legit shot to still when the Al central considering the hot start we are on since the all star break?

Mark P

  • Detroit’s lead is down to six games over Cleveland, which is still pretty substantial.  It would take a combo of the Guards both staying hot, and the Tigers continuing their so-so play over the last month for the Guardians to have a legitimate chance.

It would be pretty ironic if, a year after their big late-season surge, the Tigers were caught by another team going on a surprise late run

Rangers Fan

  • I’ve seen conflicting reports on the Rangers CBT situation after the trade deadline additions. The local beat writers are acting as if the Rangers will definitively end the season over the CBT threshold. But other sources, like Spotrac and Cot’s, make it seem like the Rangers can and will end up below the CBT threshold. Obviously, bonuses and incentives complicate things, but if you take the incentives that are “very likely” to hit, it appears the Rangers will stay under with a little room for additional bonuses. Do you have any clarity on this?

Mark P

  • A team’s final luxury tax number isn’t officially known until the league releases numbers in December.  Sites like Cot’s, Spotrac, RosterResource, etc. do a great job in providing projections and estimates, but they’re the first to tell you that they’re working with incomplete information.  Many other factors like roster bonuses or other expenses are known sometimes only to the teams themselves, and those the x-factor numbers audited by the league at year’s end
  • My guess right now would be that Texas is just barely under the line, given how Cot’s/RR/Spotrac all have them slightly under the $241MM tax line.

Jeff

  • Who wins the AL West, Astros or Mariners?

Mark P

  • Who wins the AL West?

    Astros (43.2% | 272 votes)
    Mariners (51.6% | 325 votes)
    Rangers (5.0% | 32 votes)

    Total Votes: 629
  • I expanded your question to add the Rangers, since they’re certainly still in the picture at this juncture.

Armchair GM

  • With the addition of Catlos Correa, where does Isaac Paredes play if he were to come back before the playoffs?  Is Paredes trade bait in the offseason?

Mark P

  • Paredes would be used at 1B or DH, depending on Alvarez’s status.  You could maybe see him at 2B if Altuve then plays left field.  Needless to say, Houston would find a way to get Paredes in there.

Guest

  • Is Boston legit, or is this another fluke start to the 2nd half?

Mark P

  • They’re definitely legit. Now that the pitching has started to come around, the Sox don’t have many weaknesses

Don

  • Watching every Tiger game it’s easy to see how and why they’ve been inconsistent lately. Mark I’m wondering how a non fan sees it from the outside looking in. Thanks

Mark P

  • Not to press the panic button too much for Detroit fans, but there are some similarities right now between the 2024 Orioles and the 2025 Tigers — a team that had basically everything go right for three months, and then reality started to sink in.

There’s still plenty of time for the Tigers to stabilize things.  As mentioned earlier, their six-game lead is still substantial.  (If you asked Tigers fans before the season if they would’ve been happy with a six-game division lead on August 9, that would’ve been a unanimous yes.)

  • I find it hard to believe, for one, that Riley Greene’s slump will last the rest of the year

Chris

  • I know The Athletic mentioned it, do you think its possible the Yanks cut their losses with Williams once some relief guys come off the IL?

Yankeeman

  • Is Devin Williams really a September release candidate

Mark P

  • Like I said in that Yankees notes post, the fact that this is even floated as semi-realistic possibility is wild, considering Williams’ reputation.  I’d say it’s still unlikely given that it was just a few weeks ago that Williams seemed like his old self heading into the All-Star break.

Brewer Fan

  • Not anquestiin but I just want to say, the team with the best record right now has a starting outfield of Issac Collins, Blake Perkins, and Sal Frelick.. this team is absolutely wild.

Mark P

  • Credit to those outfielders for all playing well, and to the Brewers organization in general for (once again) figuring out a way to remain contenders.

Redsfan

  • Are we chasing rainbows?

Mark P

  • The Reds have an opening here with the Mets struggling and the Cubs to some extent just treading water over the last few weeks.  Cincinnati’s trade deadline moves were pretty interesting, and I think the team still had it in them to make a run down the stretch

Guest

  • should Luis Robert Jr. keep his bags packed in the off season? If not, do the Sox sign a big bat to pair with Robert and who might that bat be?

Mark P

  • Chicago’s certainly not going to make a big signing since they’re still in the depths of the rebuild.  It will be fascinating to watch the Robert trade talks this winter and see what kind of deal (if any) can get finalized.  Even picking up that club option is an interesting risk for the Sox, since it they end up having to eat money to complete a deal, it’ll look pretty strange.

Al Pacino

  • Bees?

Mark P

  • Beads?!

Detroit

  • I’m talking building a dynastic team, not trying to eek in by selling the top prospects.
  • First place caused the GM to drop the team building plan? They were a rebuilding team and had pending Free Agents, an opt out player and blocked prospects not likely to make the Detroit roster.

Mark P

  • These were two different comments by the same poster, for the record.

Scott Harris made statements something along these lines post-deadline, saying that other teams were making such big asks for Detroit’s top prospects that Harris didn’t want to blow up the future just to make a run in 2025.  That’s all logical and, as I’ve noted in the past, having a deep farm system can sometimes made trade talks difficult, since every other club will naturally aim high at first for just the top minor leaguers.

I do think digging a bit deeper into the prospect pile, however, might’ve been a shot in the arm for a flagging Tigers team.  Obtaining a player with multiple years of control, for instance, might’ve been worth the cost of giving away someone in the top 10 prospects (if obviously not Clark, McGonigle, etc.)

Prellers Death Wish

  • What was your favorite deadline move?

Mark P

  • I really liked the Phillies getting Duran.  They paid a big cost, but having a star closer immediately solves a big roster problem.

Blue Jays

  • If the jays make the playoffs, what’s their starting rotation look like?

Mark P

  • Easiest call is probably just Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt, with Scherzer as the fourth. Lauer probably deserves a start but he can also be more easily shifted down into bullpen duty.  Bieber (and Manoah) are x-factors as well, but we’ll cross that bridge once we see either in action.

Braves Fan

  • Great job with the deadline coverage!

Mark P

  • Thanks!  As you might expect, deadline day is easily MLBTR’s busiest day of the year, so the whole staff was on call to cover the tons of breaking stories all day long.

JN

  • What does the Dodgers playoff rotation look like with everyone healthy? Would Kershaw potentially be left out? Have a hard time trusting Sasaki with no postseason experience

Mark P

  • Big if, but IF everyone is healthy, Kershaw will still get starts.  It is possible you could see a Kershaw/Ohtani hybrid “starter” in a piggyback capacity depending on where Ohtani is at health-wise come October.

Ranger Danger

  • Mistake by the phils not trading me?

Mark P

  • Nope.

Paint(er) by numbers

  • I get that I’m good, but I have already had tj. Shouldn’t the phils have traded an unproven quantity in me for a known quantity in Kwan? Would have solved immediate and long term OF questions.

Mark P

  • Two questions kind of fold into one here, as Painter will probably be stepping right into the rotation spot left open when Suarez (likely) departs in free agency.  The Phillies instead opted to move Abel to address another need in bringing Duran in to close.

marlins

  • Cody B would look good for us in RF, low strike outs good d some pop, all we need is offense

Mark P

  • I’m going out on a limb by saying that the Marlins won’t be signing Cody Bellinger this winter.  Or anyone to any kind of pricey, longer-term contract.  Miami’s rebuild has shown some really good progress but it’ll be a long time (if ever) that the organization moves into that kind of a player acquisition phase.

Brett

  • Are the Braves closer to contending or a rebuild?

Mark P

  • There’s still so much talent on the roster that I feel 2025 might just be a Murphy’s Law season.  Having basically the entire rotation get hurt is enough to crush any team, but the bigger long-term issue might be that so many of the hitters didn’t produce.

With healthier pitching, Acuna, Olson, the Baldwin/Murphy combo, and Riley, that’s a good core right there.  At least one of Harris/Profar/Albies needs to rebound, and I feel it’s possible Atlanta could trade Albies this winter to upgrade at 2B.

Cashman

  • I know Devin Williams has been awful, especially recently. He does have a great track record, any chance he gets a qualifying offer in the offseason? Does he accept it?

Mark P

  • Williams would absolutely accept a qualifying offer, but the Yankees just as absolutely aren’t going to offer one given his struggles

Fat Guy

  • For Duran, i personally would have preferred Ford and Sloan or Cijntje over Tait and Abel, simply because the Twins would have a more near ready catcher and could trade Jeffers in the off-season. What say you?

Mark P

  • That also would’ve been a pretty good trade package, except we don’t know if the Mariners actually had that offer on the table.

Lars

  • Are the Cardinals a better team without Arenado?

Mark P

  • Since Arenado isn’t offering much at this point beyond good defense, probably yes.

Is it Football Season?

  • What will it take for the Reds to truly acquire a player that helps them offensively this winter/offseason?  And when will the media begin calling out their ownership/front office?

Mark P

  • In my view, the Cincinnati beat writers have been plenty critical of the team’s moves, or lack thereof.

The Reds have a lot of money coming off the books this winter, so even with arb raises cutting into that figure to some extent, there’s room for the team to make at least one pricey addition.  If such a move is made, it simply has to be for a productive player (i.e. not the Jeimer Candelario signing), given the team’s budget limitations.  Adding one proper full-time outfielder rather than relying on the platoons would also be a good way to solidify matters.

Mark

  • Do you think Trevor Story will opt out at the end of the season given his performance this season?

Mark P

  • Story is entering his age-33 season, and would be leaving a guaranteed $55MM on the table by opting out of the last two seasons on his deal.  I find it hard to believe he’d pass on that money coming off a season in which he’d stayed healthy, but still only has slightly above-average offense
  • It seems far likelier that Story remains in his contract and sticks around to play for a Red Sox team that looks like they’re entering a promising era

A’s tanked 2025 trading Erceg

  • Why don’t the Oakland A’s leave a good bullpen in place without tinkering with it? Do you think the A’s would have gone 1–20 this year, if they had not traded Lucas Erceg to the Royals? (Will Klein is already gone, like Joe Boyle; in recent trades, it seems that the A’s have acquired a lot of players who are soon gone from the franchise: out of options, etc.? I don’t know the right term for it, but this seems to be a recent phenomenon.) Trade Mason Miller and JP Sears to the Padres for four this year; you’re gambling that Leo de Vries turns out to be something more than Yoan Moncada, and you’re gambling that you can trade one reliever after one or two good years for another minor league prospect or two who throws 100mph. What is your school of thought on trading relievers having good years with years of team control for minor league starters? It seems like the A’s haven’t brought up starters like Hudson Mulder Zito in a long time…

Mark P

  • Relief pitching is inherently unreliable.  I don’t blame the A’s for selling high on Miller or even Erceg, especially when another team is willing to offer a blue-chipper like DeVries

Skenes

  • As a diehard Pirates fan (I will take your pity please), is it wrong for me to want to trade Skenes now? I want him in Pittsburgh forever but the reality is that isn’t going to happen and I don’t want to see his career ruined by the inept organization. Plus the haul back is the best bet to land 3 future major league bats in the lineup.

Mark P

  • It’s an unfortunate state of affairs that fans are so resigned to having a generational talent on their team seem like an inevitable departure.  I wonder how many Pirates fans share this poster’s view, in the sense that the Bucs might as well sell high on him now rather than delaying the inevitable.

Armchair GM

  • What type of  extensions ($ and years) would  the Astros have to offer Hunter Brown and Jeremy Pena in the offseason, to keep them in Houston beyond their arbitration years?

Mark P

  • Both are represented by Scott Boras, so extensions may be unlikely barring a drastic overpay.  Pena has two arb years left and Brown is arb-eligible for the first time this coming winter, so the Astros may stick with this limited cost control in order to manage the rest of their payroll, if the CBA remains a concern.

Even with the Twins kicking in some money on Carlos Correa, the addition of that contract adds another significant boost to Houston’s long-term expenditures.

Rippin dingers

  • Why isn’t Lawlar playing everyday in the bigs?

Mark P

  • He’s been recovering from a hamstring strain.  Once healthy, he’ll certainly get called back to the Diamondbacks.

Baseball fan

  • Jays look like contenders but Brendon Little has been bad recently and Fluharty/Bruihl aren’t leverage guys. Do you think Little bounces back and how will jays pen fare going forward?

Mark P

  • Dominguez and Varland were good additions, but I would’ve liked to have seen Toronto get one more reliever into the mix.  You mentioned a few of the inexperienced or unproven names the Blue Jays have been relying on for much of the year, and the doors may already be coming off a couple of these relievers.
  • Depending on the state of the rotation, it seems possible the Jays could do something like move Manoah or even Lauer into the bullpen in September to add depth and quality.

Charlesco

  • When will Skubal be a free agent? Should they have gone all in?

Mark P

  • He is set to hit free agency following the 2026 season.
  • Skubal is another Boras client, so with an extension unlikely, I would’ve viewed this situation as another reason the Tigers could’ve or should’ve pushed harder to win now

who’s on 1st

  • Altho Altuve has been a team player by moving off 2b, give the guy some respect by leaving him at 2b- with all his accomplishments over the years.

Mark P

  • The other factor behind the position change was that Altuve has been a subpar defender (in the view of most metrics) at second base for some time now.  He hasn’t done much better as a left fielder either, leaving the Astros in a bit of a quandary about where exactly to play him going forward.

Ken

  • What would a Nick Kurtz extension look like?

Mark P

  • Since Kurtz is limited to first base, he probably couldn’t command something quite in the Anthony/Carroll tier of extensions for players with less than a year of service time.  But, asking for at least a $10MM average annual value seems like the absolute floor.

Barney Coolio

  • Will anyone ever steal 500 bases again?

Mark P

  • At this rate, Josh Naylor will be there before the season is out.

Phillies

  • The Phillies have managed to make it through another year with just one major pitching injury, and that wasn’t even an arm injury!  How have they managed to stay so (relatively) healthy while the rest of the league seemingly has to cycle through 10 starters just to get through a season?

Mark P

  • Feels like you’re tempting fate just by asking this question!  Part of it is just pure luck, part can be owed to the Phillies investing in the right pitchers, and credit should be given to the team’s medical and training staff for their part in keeping these guys healthy.

taylor ward

  • would the reds trade hector rodriguez for ward this offseason?

Mark P

  • Ward is the kind of everyday player that would be a nice fit in Cincy, except I’m not sure Rodriguez would be the ideal trade piece.  H-Rod himself could be part of the answer in the Reds’ outfield as early as next season.

Barney Coolio

  • Seriously, will anyone ever steal 500 bases again?

Mark P

  • That was a serious answer!  Who are you to doubt the Mississauga Speed Demon?!

Actual response: only 39 players in MLB history have ever reached the 500-steal plateau, so it’s not like it’s a common milestone.  I’d say that yes, someone will get there again eventually, but it’ll take a special kind of player.  Maybe a Chandler Simpson if he keeps consistently hitting.

  • Sorry for the delay there, had a brief internet outage but it seems like everything’s up and running again

IM

  • What do you make of the O’s quantity over quality approach to the deadline?

Mark P

  • There was only so much the Orioles were going to get for rental players, so in that sense, the club did well in amassing a lot of lottery tickets and more for their various trade chips.

CardinalRed

  • Would it make any sense for the Cards to sign DJ? Yankees are paying him through next year and he could help JJ at 2B, plus the Arenado friendship. Arenado needs to stay in the StL and enter the HoF with a Cards cap

Mark P

  • For a Cardinals team that’s prioritizing playing time for younger talent, signing LeMahieu wouldn’t make any sense

Starryl Drawberry

  • Agree or disagree: Buying at the trade deadline is a trap for most teams. Deadline trades usually don’t move the needle much and are more likely to harm than hurt; for every Yoenis Cespedes that comes in and saves a season, there are five Pete Crow-Armstrongs.

Mark P

  • Pretty much every World Series champion of the last umpteen years has been helped by a deadline acquisition.  Would some of these teams have won a ring without that deadline pickup?  Maybe, but we’ll never know, and flags fly forever.

It’s a “trap” in the sense that only one team wins every year, but I don’t view anything short of a championship as making a deadline push “not worth it” in most cases.

Curt Blefary

  • The Scherzer/Kershaw match up, last night, was only the third time in the the last 35 years that two pitchers with 3,000+ strikeouts faced one another.  It happened 20 times in the ’80’s!  i find this amazing!  The fact that starting pitchers don’t go as deep in games seems to be the biggest reason for this phenomena.  What, in your opinion, are some others?

Mark P

  • The reason it happened so relatively often in the 80’s is because Nolan Ryan was around to face everyone, but you’re right, it’s a pretty cool feat.  It’s fun that the Jays and Dodgers seemed to go a bit out of their way to make sure things lined up for Scherzer and Kershaw to face each other one (last?) time

Kelly Leak

  • Are the O’s a cautionary tale for all the good young Teams out there? This time last year the O’s were expected to dominate for the next 10 seasons.

Mark P

  • This is perhaps another reason why the Tigers could’ve or should’ve been more aggressive at the deadline….

….and yet, the Kyle Stowers trade is perhaps a counter-example of why trading prospects doesn’t always work out.  In fairness, Rogers has looked very good for Baltimore this year, so that trade no longer seems as inexplicable as it did at the time.

Friar Faithful

  • What’s your opinion on the idea that the Padres may try to turn Mason Miller into a starter next year?

Mark P

  • I guess there’s no harm in stretching him out for a look in Spring Training, though Miller’s injury history makes me think he’s just better off as a reliever

Jays Fan

  • Is it wrong that I refuse to give Aikins any credit for this 1st place Team. It just seems that my uncle Joe could have stumbled into a quality Team after 10 years and a $240 millions payroll.

Mark P

  • If your uncle Joe can develop four (going on five?) playoff teams in 10 years, the Nationals might want his contact info.

Oz

  • What is Alex Anthopoulos’ approach this off-season?

Mark P

  • I wonder if the Braves might not be a relatively quiet team, if they’re chalking 2025 up to extremely bad injury luck.  AA will always make some moves, but in terms of true blockbusters, I’m not sure if any are on the horizon other than perhaps a reorg in the middle infield.

Royals

  • Do they make the postseason or miss out?

Mark P

  • I think they’ll fall short. Just too many AL teams that seem to be playing well, and the Royals dug themselves into too big a hole.
  • Time to wrap up the chat.  Thanks so much for all the questions, and the Weekend Chat can hopefully be back on more or less a regular schedule now that the July madness is past.

By Anthony Franco | August 8, 2025 at 12:28pm CDT

Anthony Franco

  • Hey everyone, hope you've all enjoyed your week!
  • Looking forward to another of these, let's get going

Kevin in Tx

  • Does Texas rid themselves of Adolis Garcia this winter, his last year of arbitration, I’m guessing a raise to about $12-17 million.

Anthony Franco

  • It'd be much closer to 12 than 17. He's not getting an $8M arbitration raise coming off this kind of season. Agree that he's getting non-tendered anyways though

RoxTalks

  • Will Brandon Woodruff be extended the QO after he declines his end of the QO?

Anthony Franco

  • He's got a $20M mutual option with a $10M buyout. Just clarifying what the questioner means by "declines his end"
  • We'll see how he finishes the year but yeah, I think we're trending towards him receiving and declining the QO. Based on our FA deliberations this week, it seems like I'm the low person on staff about Woodruff's earning power, but there's a lot higher upside than there are with some guys who either received the QO last winter (Severino, Martinez) or signed for the same amount (Buehler)
  • I feel like Eovaldi's 3/75 is the absolute ceiling and would have him more as a high-AAV two year guy right now, but others at MLBTR (especially Tim Dierkes) think there's a path to a much better deal than that if he shoves through the end of the season and into the playoffs

GWA

  • Are the Yanks cooked for 2025.

Anthony Franco

  • Eh, I still think they'll hang onto a Wild Card spot. The bullpen's better on paper than it has pitched. It's tough to feel great about them with how badly they've played for the better part of two months, but there's a lot of talent on the roster and they're still in playoff position right now

  • Who gets your vote for worst owner in Baseball? It could come from Colorado, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, Miami, Oakland Or the Chicago White Sox.

Trade Rumors Front Office Subscriber Chat Transcript

By Steve Adams | August 4, 2025 at 3:00pm CDT

Steve Adams

  • Good afternoon! I'll get going at 3pm CT, but feel free to start firing questions off ahead of time, if you are so inclined!
  • Greetings! Plenty to discuss post-deadline, so let's get after it.

Jon D

  • If I understand the post-deadline rules, minor leaguers can still be traded, yes? If so, I think the Red Sox need to get Trey Mancini from the D-Backs. I think this can still be done and he could (hopefully) help fill a hole at 1B that Breslow couldn't address. Thoughts?

Steve Adams

  • Ran through post-deadline acquisition rules here over the weekend:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/08/how-to-acquire-players-after-th...Some, not all minor leaguers can be traded. Any player who's on a minor league contract that has not been selected to the majors this season is eligible. He can only be traded for cash, a PTBNL or other minor leaguers who've not had their contracts selected to a major league roster. The PTBNL cannot be someone on a 40-man roster or someone else who's been previously on a big league roster.

There are some oddball exceptions. Cavan Biggio was traded last September because he'd been released from his prior major league contract (not had that contract outrighted) and signed a new minor league deal with the Giants, for instance.

  • But by and large, you can cross off the idea of trading for the vast majority of players who've appeared on a major league roster or injured list all season.
  • Mancini is eligible to be traded, though if the Red Sox felt he was a prominent upgrade to their first base situation, they could've already acquired him from the D-backs for a song. Arizona isn't going to give Mancini much of a look (if any look at all) -- not after acquiring Tyler Locklear to play 1B going forward.

Duffy Scliff

  • Will the Royals pick up Salvy’s player option at season’s end? And should they?

Steve Adams

  • It's a club option, not a player (or else it'd be Perez's call, not the team's!)Semantics aside, I expect they will. Perez is a franchise icon at this point, and while his seasonlong numbers aren't great, he's hitting .290/.339/.584 over his past 250 plate appearances. That's 48% better than league-average.

It's a $13.5MM club option with a $2MM buyout, so it's really only a net $11.5MM decision for Kansas City. I'd be surprised if they bought him out.

Jim

  • If you were the A's, what off-season moves would you make with an eye toward contending in the postseason in 2026?
