Aramis Ramirez

And The Offseason Begins

By Tim Dierkes | October 28, 2006 at 10:59am CDT

The Cardinals have been crowned the unlikely world champs, so now it’s time for all baseball fans to offically focus on 2007.  Here’s a roundup of the latest rumors.

With the Tigers’ season over, the consensus among local papers seems to be that they will trade some of their excess starting pitching for a slugger, possibly a first baseman.  Some folks think Jeremy Bonderman’s postseason performance (3.10 ERA in 20 innings) was a sign that he will take it to the next level in ’07.  Others think it’s time to trade him with his value so high.  Possible trade targets:  Mark Teixeira, Todd Helton, Richie Sexson, Adam Dunn, Manny Ramirez, and Pat Burrell.  It’s certainly feasible that Brandon Inge, Nate Robertson, or Craig Monroe could be included in a trade.

We’ll know by November 11th whether Aramis Ramirez will become a free agent.  Right now, he’s not close to a deal with the Cubs.  While Ramirez’s current deal is often cited as two years and $22.5MM, the third year is pretty easily guaranteed at $11MM.  He just needs to play 270 games over the first two seasons.  We hear a lot about the Dodgers and Angels as Ramirez’s suitors.  The Dodgers would force top prospect Andy LaRoche to move from third base if they sign Ramirez.  Other teams that could have interest: the Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Rangers, Giants, and Padres.

The Sheffield Saga continues, with the Astros and Indians entering the mix.  A one-year rental from the Tribe would be a great fit in my mind.

Phils Unlikely To Pursue Aramis Ramirez

By Tim Dierkes | October 25, 2006 at 7:11pm CDT

So, who’s to fill the Phillies’ glaring vacancy at the hot corner?  According to this report by Randy Miller, it won’t be possible free agent Aramis Ramirez.  If you scroll down a bit, Miller mentions that Ramirez "won’t be pursued."  It’s not a direct quote from Pat Gillick, though you get the impression Miller spoke to Gillick to write the article.  All the quotes from Gillick tipped me off on this.  (Link found via Beerleaguer.)

The free agent market is barren, although Rich Aurilia might work.  If Gillick wants to make a deal, he could go after Joe Crede, Mike Lowell, Morgan Ensberg, or Adrian Beltre.

The Sad Progression of Aramis Ramirez

By Tim Dierkes | October 21, 2006 at 12:00pm CDT

It’s been interesting to watch the Aramis Ramirez Situation develop.  Here’s what I’ve seen.

Phase 1: Ramirez signs four year, $42MM contract with an option for ’09.  On the surface, it looks like security for both parties.  In reality, it’s more of a two year deal.  Jim Hendry built in the chance for Ramirez to void the contract after 2006 if Ramirez thinks he can get more than the non-guaranteed three years/$33.5MM remaining. Media makes light of the out clause and Ramirez indicates that there’s little chance he’d leave Chicago.  Realistic fans realize that the contract gives the Cubs zero leverage.

Phase 2: In the first year of the contract, Ramirez plays just 123 games because of a quad injury.  He’s quite productive in that time, but no one is publicly worried about the out clause.

Phase 3: In the middle of the 2006 season, the idea of the out clause surfaces again.  Chicago media strangely contends that there’s little chance Ramirez walks away from three years, $33.5MM, non-guaranteed over his age 29-31 seasons with a weak free agent class at his position and tons of teams with money to burn looking for 3Bs.  Ramirez continues to spout the party line about staying in Chicago.

Phase 4: Idea of re-negotiation surfaces, Ramirez starts deferring to his agent when asked about possible free agency.  Media starts planting the seed that Ramirez is lazy and Scott Moore could be a Major League 3B in 2007.  Despite the very serious chance of Ramirez departing and leaving the Cubs with nothing, Hendry does not trade him at the deadline.

Phase 5: Exercising out clause becomes a lock, but Hendry speaks of hammering out a deal with Ramirez within a few weeks of season’s end.

Phase 6: Though Hendry knew he’d need a manager all along, he contends that the manager search is the reason Ramirez doesn’t have a deal done after a few weeks.

Phase 7: A-Rod balloon is floated, giving Cubs fans false hope that the team could sustain the loss of Ramirez.  Ramirez’s agent defends the player not running out ground balls and mentions that he might be the "hottest free agent."

Phase 8 (predicted): Agent starts saying that while Ramirez hopes to remain a Cub, his client has earned the right to test the free agent market.

Phase 9 (predicted): Ramirez signs with Angels or Dodgers.  Chicago Tribune starts trying to make Scott Moore seem like a capable replacement.  Cubs fans, having been duped last year that Ronny Cedeno was a suitable alternative to Rafael Furcal, don’t buy it. I hope.

Phase 10 (predicted): Cubs spend a lot of money suboptimally and/or trade Rich Hill/Donald Veal/Sean Gallagher and play .500 ball at best in 2007.

Carroll: Aramis Ramirez To Stay A Cub?

By Tim Dierkes | September 19, 2006 at 9:10pm CDT

Baseball Prospectus’s Will Carroll gave hope to Cubs fans everywhere in his chat today.  When posed a question about Aramis Ramirez leaving the Cubs as a free agent, he responded:

"I don’t think Ramirez will leave. In fact, I think the deal’s essentially done to keep him."

I thought that one line was definitely noteworthy, as Carroll is known to have some solid Cubs sources.  Last month, the Chicago Tribune’s Paul Sullivan indicated that Ramirez would stay, while SI’s Jon Heyman thought differently.

Heyman: Aramis Ramirez May Become A Free Agent

By Tim Dierkes | August 31, 2006 at 10:07am CDT

It seems that SI’s Jon Heyman has a different take than the Chicago Tribune’s Paul Sullivan on the Aramis Ramirez situation.  As you recall, Sullivan mentioned ten days ago that the Cubs believe Ramirez won’t exercise his out clause and become a free agent this winter.  It seemed curious, as Ramirez could easily top three years and $33.5MM for his age 29-31 seasons on the open market.

Yesterday afternoon, Heyman commented:

"Aramis Ramirez is telling friends that he plans to exercise an option to opt out of his contract with the Cubs.  Ramirez…is also telling people he’d love to go to New York.  The Astros, Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers could be among favored players for Ramirez. But, of course, the Cubs won’t let him leave easily."

So what’s it going to be, Aramis?  Honor your current deal (a hometown discount), take more money on the open market, or renegotiate with the Cubs?

Tribune: Cubs Believe Ramirez Will Stay

By Tim Dierkes | August 21, 2006 at 1:59pm CDT

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune:

"While the Cubs still believe Aramis Ramirez won’t exercise his opt-out clause after this season and leave $22 million on the table to become a free agent, they do have a third baseman in the system with a bright future. West Tenn’s Scott Moore, a 22-year-old prospect who was a first-round draft pick of Detroit in 2002, is tied for second in the Southern League with 20 home runs and ranks third with 68 RBIs. Moore, who was acquired with Roberto Novoa from Detroit in the Kyle Farnsworth trade, is at least a year away from the majors."

Ramirez’s contract, signed in April of last year, calls for $11MM in 2007 and $11.5MM in 2008.  The deal also has an $11MM mutual option for ’09 that becomes guaranteed with 270 games played from 2007-08.  How likely is this?  Here’s a look at Ramirez’s games played.

Age 23: 158 games
Age 24: 142 games
Age 25: 159 games
Age 26: 145 games
Age 27: 123 games
Age 28: 158 games (projected)

2005, Ramirez dealt with groin problems, lower back tightness, a sprained ankle, a bruised shin, and a quad injury.  The quad injury is what really caused the missed time, and it looks like an exception rather than the norm.  So I think it’s safe to say Ramirez is looking at a three-year, $33.5MM deal for his age 29-31 seasons.

One has to wonder whether the Tribune is quietly laying the groundwork for the Scott Moore era in Chicago.  Paul Sullivan hasn’t been a company man, though, so there are probably no hidden motives.  Cubs fans can rest easy for the moment; it appears Ramirez will remain a Cub.

The offseason won’t be without temptation, however.  Ramirez’s toughest competition at the hot corner: Aubrey Huff and Nomar Garciaparra.  He’s younger, he’s better, and he’s healthier than that pair.  The most comparable contract might be Troy Glaus at four guaranteed years, $45MM for 2005-08.  Glaus was entering his age 28 season, though he’d played just 149 games from 2003-04.  Ramirez, on the other hand, just posted his third consecutive 30 HR campaign.  There’s no doubt he could get four guaranteed years (as opposed to the current two) and at least $13MM annually.

Either Ramirez A)doesn’t exercise his out clause and honors his deal (which is a hometown discount), B)tests the free agent market and finds several superior offers, or C)renegotiates his current deal.  Jim Hendry hopes for A; C seems a lot more likely.

Maddux Leaves With Tip Of Cap

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2006 at 7:43pm CDT

Many are speculating that Greg Maddux’s excellent performance today against the Cardinals was his last as a Cub.  He got the win and departed to a standard ovation, tipping his cap to the Chicago faithful.

In other Cubs rumors, Will Carroll mentions today in his latest Will’s Mill update that "the Cubs have received some indications that Aramis Ramirez is going to opt out of his contract at the end of the season, putting them in the same situation that the Brewers were in before moving Carlos Lee."

Though many Cubs fans may not want to admit it, there’s a very solid chance Ramirez tests the market.  Does he love Chicago so much as to forego extra years and millions of security?  Doubtful.  Since when have the Cubs ever gotten a hometown discount, anyway?  Sammy Sosa and Kerry Wood seemed to get a hometown surcharge in their massive deals.  I suppose there was Andre Dawson, but that’s about it.  This is Jim Hendry’s best shot to secure two young position players (and one had better be an outfielder).

Another tasty nugget from Carroll on the Reds:

"They have one offer out on a player that would really signal a new era in Cincy, though it’s unlikely to happen."

My own speculation?  The offer is for Miguel Tejada.  We know that they’ve kicked the tires.  By the way, are you getting sick of the phrase "kicked the tires" yet?

Source: Cubs Turned Down Kendry Morales For Aramis Ramirez

By Tim Dierkes | July 26, 2006 at 9:58pm CDT

A trusted Angels source gave me the scoop on the team’s inquiries concerning third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

Word is that Los Angeles offered first baseman Kendry Morales straight up for Ramirez and the Cubs turned it down.  Morales, a 23 year-old Cuban defector, was called up to start for the Angels after hitting .311/.352/.463 in 42 Triple A games.  He responded by hitting just .240/.302/.388 in 183 ABs between the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th spots in the batting order.

According to Baseball America, Morales’s defensive deficiencies limit him to first base or DH.  Still, a team could probably get away with sliding him down one more notch on the defensive spectrum to left field.  If the Cubs decide to retain the hot-hitting Ramirez this month, they’d better be sure he’s not planning on exercising his out-clause and testing the free agent market.

My source also indicates that Morgan Ensberg is unlikely to be traded given his shoulder condition.

L.A. Times: Angels Inquire About Ramirez, Tracy, Ensberg

By Tim Dierkes | July 26, 2006 at 9:16am CDT

We’ve heard Miguel Tejada as well as various mid-tier firstbasemen bandied about as possible trade targets for Bill Stoneman and the Angels.  Mike DiGiovanna’s article for the Los Angeles Times today also indicates that the Halos could pursue various slugging third basemen.

Specifically, DiGiovanna mentions that the Angels have inquired about Aramis Ramirez, Chad Tracy, and Morgan Ensberg.

Ramirez is on fire, hitting .329/.391/.763 this month with nine home runs.  What some folks may not realize is that Ramirez has every reason and the ability to test the free agent market this winter.  He would most certainly top the money he’d make staying with the Cubs under his current contract.  Ramirez has said he wants to stay in Chicago, so we’ll see.

The Angels would have to offer an excellent young player to pry Tracy away from Arizona.  The 26 year-old has slipped a bit to .279/.343/.454 this season, which is below average for his position.  Still he’s locked up for $13.25MM for 2007-09.  That’s more than fair value.

Ensberg turns 31 next month, yet free agency is still a few years off.  He hit the DL on July 10th with a shoulder contusion.  After a torrid April, Ensberg hit just .194/.355/.382.  The Padres have also expressed interest, but this acquisition would be a gamble.

Trade Rumor Roundup: 8 Days Left

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2006 at 10:36am CDT

To begin with, this just isn’t true.  With the Kearns deal and probably Soriano trade, the 2006 deadline just can’t be classified as a dud.  That honor belongs to 2005 for sure.  The trading action never matches the buildup, but this year’s still a good one.

Read Ken Rosenthal’s latest.  The White Sox are in the Soriano game, the Rangers have interest in Luis Gonzalez, the Braves could add another reliever, Julio Lugo still might become a Blue Jay, and the Brewers look like sellers.  In my opinion, some Brewers besides Carlos Lee that could be unloaded: Geoff Jenkins, Corey Koskie, Brady Clark, and Dan Kolb.  Koskie will need to recover quickly from his concussion, however.

Still hearing that the Cubs like Willy Taveras, which would definitely fit their m.o. of players who don’t get on base.  Phil Rogers also mentions that Seattle’s Rafael Soriano is being asked about. It would be surprising to see the Mariners deal that kind of young talent.

Tons of great rumors coming from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.  He’s got a rundown of the Red Sox, all sorts of teams scouting Humberto Sanchez, and more.

Buster Olney mentioned in his blog today that the Astros are among various teams scouting Elmer Dessens.  The Astros are also looking at Damaso Marte.

Unfounded rumor department: Could the Dodgers be after Aramis Ramirez?  Ramirez has picked a fantastic time to heat up, and L.A. has some top shelf young talent…is there anywhere Julio Lugo could go besides Toronto?  How about the Rockies?
