Odds & Ends: DeRosa, Bruney, Cooper

Let's kick it off today with some odds and ends.

Odds & Ends: Draft, Iwamura, Mets

Some links to tide you over this Memorial Day Eve:

  • John Sickels at Minor League Ball lists last year's starters who posted a Win Share over 10 alongside their draft origins. Last week, Future Redbirds advised against risking a first round pick on high school pitchers.
  • MLB.com has a fan Q&A up with Pirates GM Neal Huntington, who believes this year's draft is deep in pitching but thin on quality college position players.
  • Akinori Iwamura will probably hit the DL after he suffered a nasty collision in today's game and was carted off the field. Joe Maddon will have a look at internal options to fill in for now.
  • With the Mets hurting badly, Ken Davidoff at Newsday acknowledges GM Omar Minaya has his work cut out for him. With Jose Reyes' lingering tendinitis in his right knee and his injured backups, Davidoff thinks Minaya should get an appraisal on Bobby Crosby. Davidoff also thinks the Mets should "aggressively" go after the rehabbing Ben Sheets and at least discuss Erik Bedard with the M's, despite the Mets' top prospects sitting at lower levels.

Bobby Crosby Requests Trade

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Bobby Crosby met with A’s manager Bob Geren and GM Billy Beane on Friday, and the player was told he’ll be learning multiple positions for 2009.  MLB.com’s Barry Bloom adds that Crosby reiterated his desire to be traded at this meeting.  All 29 teams declined a chance to take on Crosby and his $5.25MM salary when he was placed on waivers, so the A’s would have to eat salary somehow.

Odds & Ends: Marte, Wilkerson, Bowden

Cubs Bobby Crosby Rumor

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle:

Shortstop Bobby Crosby becomes the A’s backup middle infielder with the Orlando Cabrera acquisition, but there could be some interest in him before the spring is over – including from the Cubs, according to one source. One of Chicago’s top scouts was watching Tuesday’s game and is known to have been a fan of Crosby in the past.

The biggest hurdle for a Crosby trade, of course, is the $5.25MM owed to him in 2009.  I spoke to a source familiar with the Cubs’ thinking, and he said there’s "nothing to it."  He said the Cubs scout was watching the A’s as part of general coverage of all teams.

Nomar Garciaparra, A’s Agree To Terms

2:37pm: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says Nomar agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the A’s.

8:22am: According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Nomar Garciaparra has decided to play in 2009 and is on the verge of a one-year deal with the A’s.  He’ll spend time backing up the infield corners and DHing.

A’s GM Billy Beane has been active this winter, adding Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi, Orlando Cabrera, Russ Springer, and Mike WuertzJoel Sherman of the New York Post suggests owner Lew Wolff "wanted to accelerate the timetable for winning."

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle talked to incumbent shortstop Bobby Crosby, who would like to be traded.  Slusser says the Blue Jays aren’t "convinced that Crosby is an upgrade over Marco Scutaro."  Presumably, the A’s would have to eat salary or take back a bad contract to move Crosby (or simply release him).

Cafardo’s Latest: Crosby, Oil Can Boyd?

A few highlights from Nick Cafardo’s latest article in the Boston Globe…

  • Despite the assumption that Miguel Tejada won’t face prison time, the Astros are keeping an open mind in terms of possible replacements for Tejada. Cafardo mentions Bobby Crosby as an option. Crosby, the 2004 AL Rookie of the Year, is likely to find himself out of a starting job if the A’s pull the trigger and sign Orlando Cabrera.
  • Here’s something I can’t believe I’m typing… can Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd make a Major League comeback at age 49? Oil Can hasn’t pitched since 1991, but claims his velocity is back up in the low 90s, and his curveball is back to form. He’s always dreamt of carrying on Satchel Paige’s legend and pitching into his 60s. Boyd’s quote:

""I have nothing to lose, and all a major league team has to lose is 15 minutes," said Boyd. "Give me 15 minutes and I’ll show I can still pitch. That’s all I want."

Boyd threw at the Red Sox fantasy camp, and former catcher Mike Stanley said that Oil Can’s stuff is the same as it was 18 years ago, and his passion hasn’t died down one bit.

Certainly an interesting story, but can he live up to his word?

Rosenthal On Lefty Relievers, Bobby Crosby

New information from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports

The top free agent lefty relievers may sign this week.  Will Ohman received three offers in recent days and four total; he could sign today or tomorrow.  Back on February 5th, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick linked the Mets and Phillies to Ohman after talking to his agent.  Rosenthal does not indicate which clubs made the offers, however.  The Dodgers are in on Joe Beimel, who they declined to offer arbitration to in December.  Dennys Reyes continues to draw interest from the Dodgers and A’s.

Rosenthal adds that the A’s want to save their money for Orlando Cabrera, who would replace Bobby Crosby at shortstop.  The Padres would not have interest in Crosby.
