Carlos Rosa Heading To Japan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 30, 2011 at 5:24pm CDT

The D'Backs announced that they released Carlos Rosa to sell him to a Japanese team. Rosa, 26, is out of options, so he would have had to clear waivers before going to the minor leagues.

Rosa appeared in 22 games for the D'Backs last year, allowing 20 hits and 12 walks in 20 innings while striking out nine. He had cameos with the Royals in 2008 and '09, but most of his pro experience comes in the minors, where he has a 3.54 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 623 2/3 innings.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic first reported the move (on Twitter).

D’Backs Eyeing Lefty Relievers; Abreu, Rosa Available

By Mark Polishuk | March 4, 2011 at 9:26pm CDT

The Diamondbacks are looking for some left-handed relief help, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.  The club added the likes of right-hander J.J. Putz over the winter to improve their league-worst bullpen, but the Snakes' current southpaw relief options include Mike Hampton, Zach Kroenke, Jordan Norberto and Joe Paterson, plus Clay Zavada returning from Tommy John surgery.

Needless to say, Arizona will be paying close attention to lefties are cut from other Spring Training camps, but if the team wants to swing a deal, Piecoro says infielder Tony Abreu and right-hander Carlos Rosa could be available.

Abreu is battling Geoff Blum, Ryan Roberts and Willie Bloomquist for the utility infield job, while Rosa is one of several right-handers on the Diamondbacks' roster.  Rosa was acquired from Kansas City last season and has a 3.97 career ERA in 34 Major League innings, but he also allowed 15 walks (against just 16 strikeouts) in his brief career.

Diamondbacks Acquire Carlos Rosa

By Zachary Links | May 1, 2010 at 9:24pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have acquired righthander Carlos Rosa from the Royals in exchange for shortstop Rey Navarro, tweets David Holtzman, the director of media relations for the Royals.

Rosa, 25, posted a 4.56 ERA, 10.1 K/9, and 4.1 BB/9 in 71 Triple A innings last year.  Early in 2010, his peripherals have moved in the wrong direction.  Baseball America notes that Rosa was originally part of the Mike Jacobs trade in October of '08, but elbow concerns prompted the Royals to send Leo Nunez to Florida instead.  BA writes that Rosa, who was converted to relief last year, had the best fastball in the Royals' farm system.  However, his secondary pitches need work.

Navarro, 20, was promoted to High-A Visalia for the 2010 season.  In 2009, the switch-hitter hit .262/.308/.339 for Single-A South Bend.  BA sees him as a plus defender capable of playing a variety of positions.

Marlins Raise Payroll Limit To $40 Million

By Tim Dierkes | October 28, 2008 at 10:17am CDT

Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel talked an industry source who says Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has authorized a payroll of up to $40MM for 2009.  This means they won’t be forced to trade any of their 16 arbitration-eligible players.  Greg Cote first suggested this on September 30th, and Buster Olney reiterated it on October 15th.

However, Berardino confirms Olney’s note from Friday: Kevin Gregg, Mike Jacobs, and Scott Olsen are available.  The Marlins discussed sending Jacobs to the Royals for righty Carlos Rosa, but the Fish are worried about Rosa’s August forearm soreness.  A thought: why would the Royals consider trading pitching for Jacobs?  Berardino names the Mariners and Blue Jays as other interested parties, and considers the Indians a fit.  The Giants have also been named as a suitor.

Berardino wonders if the Rangers will pursue Olsen, perhaps offering a catcher.  I don’t believe Olsen would succeed in Texas.

Expected to remain in Florida: Dan Uggla, Cody Ross, and Alfredo Amezaga.  Berardino says the front office is divided on Jeremy Hermida’s potential.  Four teams have asked about Hermida.  Josh Willingham may be available, but his back is worrisome.
