C.C. Sabathia

Schilling Out For Season

By Tim Dierkes | June 20, 2008 at 8:57am CDT

Curt Schilling will have season-ending surgery, and could be done for good.  This shouldn’t change much for the Red Sox, who weren’t counting on him and have strong starting pitching depth.

Ken Rosenthal did note today that the Sox are more likely to target C.C. Sabathia than a position player, even if David Ortiz’s injury is worse than expected.

Stark’s Latest: Sabathia, Bedard, Phillies, Freel

By Tim Dierkes | June 19, 2008 at 3:37pm CDT

It’s Thursday, and you know what that means.  Time for another installment of Jayson Stark’s Rumblings and Grumblings at ESPN.com.

  • Stark runs through a laundry list of candidates for the Mariners’ and Mets’ manager and GM vacancies.
  • The Indians will not be giving a negotiation window for a team hoping to sign C.C. Sabathia while acquiring him.
  • Erik Bedard is "now officially on the market."  Bedard’s value has diminished since the Mariners acquired him, however.
  • The Phillies have already inquired on Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Bronson Arroyo, and Jarrod Washburn.  Stark sees Bedard joining that group, but believes it’d require Carlos Carrasco and Antonio Bastardo.
  • Ryan Freel is drawing strong interest; Stark names the Phillies, Braves, Mets, and Marlins as suitors.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. apparently still wants to finish his career in Seattle.
  • Stark agrees with Ken Rosenthal – Mark Teixeira is not available.  Nor is Ben Sheets, by the way.
  • The Marlins are looking for center field, catcher, and bullpen help.  Stark believes they’d be willing to give up a near-arb Josh Willingham type for players with less service time.
  • The Yankees seem open to bringing back Jason Giambi next year, after they buy out his option.  Giambi is currently third in the AL in OPS at .979.

Molony’s Latest: Minaya, Oswalt, Arroyo, Redding

By Tim Dierkes | June 19, 2008 at 11:45am CDT

MLB.com’s Jim Molony tackles the hot stove in today’s article.

  • Molony says Omar Minaya is on the hot seat, though others feel his job is relatively safe.
  • Roy Oswalt is not available, but he was recently scouted by the Angels, Braves, Mets, and Phillies.
  • The Yanks have scouted C.C. Sabathia and Bronson Arroyo but haven’t made any offers.  I just don’t see how Arroyo could be effective back in the American League.
  • The Phillies are still looking for a lefty reliever.  Looking at my Trade Market post, Alan Embree, George Sherrill, Brian Fuentes, Eddie Guardado, Damaso Marte, John Grabow, Ron Mahay, or Jeremy Affeldt could fit the bill.  It still doesn’t seem like a pressing need to me, though.
  • Molony speculates that Tim Redding could be a popular name on the trade market.  Redding has a 4.10 ERA, but it’s propped up by a .258 BABIP (as a team, the Nationals have a .307 BABIP).

Possible Destinations For Sabathia

By Cork Gaines | June 18, 2008 at 12:41pm CDT

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer weighs in on the different teams that could land CC Sabathia.

  • Yankees: Despite Ken Davidoff’s report yesterday that the Yankees would not land Sabathia, Hoynes notes that the Yankees are desperate for an ace but acknowledges that they may wait until the off-season.
  • Phillies: Hoynes points out that Sabathia’s first big league manager was Charlie Manuel, but the Phillies may not have enough in the system.
  • Cubs: Hoynes feels that Lou PIniella would trade for Sabathia right now if he could.
  • Red Sox: Hoynes feels the Sox are more likely to wait until the off-season.
  • Rays: Hoynes notes that the Rays have the pieces in the farm system to land Sabathia, but wonders if they are willing to rent a player for a playoff push.
  • Angels: Hoynes points out that Sabathia is from the west coast and the Angels may have a better chance of resigning him.

Hoynes also talked to scouts about what the Indians can expect to receive if they do decide to trade the free agent-to-be.

One scout said that "they could get two young players that were at or close to the big-league level that they could control for a while" while a second scout speculates the bounty could be " two and three prospects, depending on whether that team could sign Sabathia to an extension before he becomes a free agent this winter."

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex and can be reached here.

Olney’s Latest: Rockies, Padres, Braves, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | June 18, 2008 at 9:22am CDT

Today let’s take a look at Buster Olney’s blog.

  • Executives from the Rockies and Padres are telling other clubs that they will not be sellers.  They’ve climbed back into the race with the recent D’Backs slump.  Popular trade rumor names like Brian Fuentes, Greg Maddux, and Randy Wolf may be off the market.
  • Olney runs through some scenarios for Mark Teixeira trades, if Frank Wren and the Braves decide to punt on ’08.
  • The Rangers have their eye on C.C. Sabathia – maybe now, maybe after he reaches free agency.

Davidoff: Sabathia Not Likely For Yankees

By Tim Dierkes | June 17, 2008 at 9:43am CDT

Ken Davidoff provides a reality check to Yankees fans this morning, explaining that Brian Cashman is just lukewarm on C.C. Sabathia (and considers Phil Hughes untouchable).  The Yankees will hang around in the talks, but they are not the frontrunner.  Peter Abraham says the Yanks have six weeks to make a trade, which could be for a lesser pitcher like Paul Byrd or Randy Wolf.

Davidoff says about 20 teams have expressed interest in Sabathia, including the Yankees and Mets.  The Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers have also been linked.  According to Davidoff, Mark Shapiro will eventually narrow his list to four or five teams and then get serious.  The Dodgers are one club that has both the need and the goods to make a deal.  Who’s your favorite?

C.C. Sabathia Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | June 16, 2008 at 10:24am CDT

This topic isn’t going anywhere.  Let’s take a look at today’s C.C. Sabathia rumors.

  • Scouts were in Cleveland yesterday to watch him pitch, though Paul Hoynes doesn’t identify the teams.
  • With Chien-Ming Wang’s season in peril, the Yankees’ interest in Sabathia has increased according to Tyler Kepner.
  • In his Mock Blockbuster series, Dayn Perry suggests the Cardinals should trade Colby Rasmus and Bryan Anderson for Sabathia.
  • Nick Cafardo talked to an AL GM who is skeptical that Sabathia will be dealt.

Gammons’ Latest: Sabathia, Dunn, Harden

By Tim Dierkes | June 16, 2008 at 5:00am CDT

ESPN’s Peter Gammons has a new blog post up.

  • The Indians are "thoroughly scouting" eight teams that may be interested in C.C. Sabathia, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers (the Mets may be another).  Gammons agrees with Ken Rosenthal that Mark Shapiro may trade Sabathia soon to maximize his value.  Gammons does not see the Yanks jumping in with Phil Hughes or a multi-prospect offer, unless Chien-Ming Wang’s injury forces their hand.  He does not think the Cubs or Phillies have the goods, but suggests the Rangers as a dark horse.
  • If the Cubs don’t have enough for Sabathia, Plan B could be Randy Wolf, Greg Maddux, or even Erik Bedard. The Padres and Mariners have been informed of the Cubs’ interest.
  • Gammons seems to indicate that Mark Teixeira could be available if the Braves fall out of the race (although Tex is not mentioned by name).
  • The Dodgers may have been open to trading Brad Penny, but his shoulder injury puts the kibosh on that.
  • Adam Dunn’s whifftastic ways scare the Red Sox, who might pass even if David Ortiz needs surgery.  Gammons suggests Josh Willingham would be a better fit.
  • Rich Harden could be a huge acquisition, one of the game’s most dominating pitchers.  It’s the same story though – will any team be willing to meet Billy Beane’s asking price given Harden’s injury history?

Rosenthal’s Latest: Dunn, Sabathia, Teixeira

By Tim Dierkes | June 15, 2008 at 12:52pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has a new Full Count video up.

  • Adam Dunn’s no-trade protection narrows from all teams to ten teams today.  Dunn told Rosenthal he’d like a resolution soon rather than another round of rumors.  He’d be open to an extension with the Reds, but the team has not made contact.  Will Walt Jocketty attempt to re-sign Dunn before shopping him?
  • Tough situation for the Indians – at 6.5 games out, they’re not ready to give up.  However, Mark Shapiro could maximize the return for C.C. Sabathia by trading him now rather than late July.  As many have noted, Sabathia is more than just a rental given the certain Type A draft pick compensation.
  • Rosenthal says the Braves (also 6.5 games out) are even less likely to concede than the Indians.  So don’t look for another summer of Mark Teixeira rumors.  The Braves may be buyers, hunting for a left fielder and a young controllable starting pitcher.

Sherman’s Latest: Sabathia, Fielder, Marte

By Tim Dierkes | June 15, 2008 at 10:11am CDT

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman has a host of rumors in his new column.

  • Sherman believes the Indians are leaning toward trading C.C. Sabathia.  He names the usual suspects (Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs) but also throws the Brewers into the mix based on the opinion of an "AL talent evaluator."
  • Speaking of the Brewers, Sherman believes Prince Fielder will be available "almost definitely in the offseason" and perhaps even this summer.  Doug Melvin says he’s not exploring it but never rules out anything.  The presence of Mat Gamel and Matt LaPorta plus Fielder’s unwillingness to sign long-term could lead to a deal.  Fielder figures to jump up to at least $7-8MM upon reaching arbitration for the first time.
  • The Yankees have Damaso Marte atop their list, but the Pirates want something better than two draft picks in return.  He’s looking like a Type A free agent.
  • Walt Jocketty wants to "clean house."  The usual players are named, but Sherman also mentions Bronson Arroyo as a possibility.
