Odds And Ends: Wedge, Penny, Mets
Some links to start the week off…
- Bud Shaw of the Cleveland Plain Dealer says the Indians wouldn't improve if they fire Eric Wedge.
- As this poll shows, 71% of Plain Dealer readers want Wedge fired.
- Terry Pluto of the Plain Dealer suggests the Indians' inability to develop better pitching shows in the standings.
- MLB.com's Ian Browne says Brad Penny's becoming more and more valuable, especially to the Red Sox.
- Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Mets' chance to deal Jose Reyes, David Wright or Carlos Beltran for three or four cheap, young players has likely come and gone.
- The Moneyball movie, which was to star Brad Pitt, is now in jeopardy.
How To Fix The Mets
I will offer my own opinions on how to improve the Mets in the Offseason Outlook, due within a few weeks. Many journalists have already weighed in – let’s take a look.
- Newly added bullet: John Harper of the New York Daily News. He advises the Mets to decline Delgado’s option while signing Orlando Hudson, Raul Ibanez, and Derek Lowe and trading for J.J. Putz. Say goodbye to Castillo, Perez, and Martinez in this plan.
- Ken Davidoff of Newsday: Sign free agents Francisco Rodriguez, Darren Oliver, Juan Rivera, Fernando Tatis, and Wes Helms. Also sign one of Jon Garland, Derek Lowe, or Oliver Perez. Exercise Carlos Delgado‘s $12MM option. Trade/release Aaron Heilman, Duaner Sanchez, Scott Schoeneweis, and Luis Castillo.
- Joel Sherman of the New York Post: Sign C.C. Sabathia, even if it takes $150MM over six years. Sherman notes this would lessen the load on the bullpen (Sabathia averaged 7.23 innings per start in ’08). I prefer this plan to spending $100MM on K-Rod and a mid-tier starter.
- Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog: Buy Delgado out for $4MM rather than exercise his $12MM option. Interesting, unconventional thought by Cerrone. Cerrone, like Davidoff, finds the idea of trading David Wright or Jose Reyes to be misguided.
Heyman’s Latest: Manny, K-Rod, Cashman
Lets discuss the latest column from SI.com’s Jon Heyman.
- The Mets are "disinclined" to go after Manny Ramirez or break up the Jose Reyes–David Wright–Carlos Beltran core.
- Heyman, like Ken Davidoff, feels the Mets can’t afford to sit out the Francisco Rodriguez sweepstakes. If not him, then at least Brian Fuentes.
- Heyman says Brian Cashman "appears likely" to return as Yankees GM. He notes that Cashman wouldn’t have ended up in Seattle anyway because of the return of Mariners chairman Howard Lincoln.
Mets Interested In Santana, Dotel, Chacon
The New York Post’s Mark Hale has an update for us regarding the Mets’ pursuit of pitching.
- Even though the Wilpons haven’t made any declarations to the media, the Mets are showing interest in Johan Santana. Hale notes a couple of stipulations: David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran won’t be dealt, and the Mets would want a 72-hour negotiation window. I don’t think anyone expected anything different on either point. The Twins could certainly use an influx of outfield talent, and the Mets have it.
- Octavio Dotel is one free agent on the Mets’ radar, though we’ve known that since the 16th. "On the radar" is getting overused…I need an alternative. Dotel would be fine with a setup role, though I’m guessing it would take two years and $12MM or more. Dotel came up through the Mets’ system as a starter, and was traded to the Astros in ’99 in the Mike Hampton/Derek Bell/Roger Cedeno deal. The Tigers and Royals may also be in on Dotel.
- The Mets also like Shawn Chacon, possibly as a swingman. The Rockies have interest in Chacon but only as a reliever. He’s said that he’d prefer to start.
Latest Alex Rodriguez Rumors
Ah, your daily dose of Alex Rodriguez rumors. What would you do without it?
- Rob Bradford asked Red Sox captain Jason Varitek whether Alex Rodriguez would fit in with the Red Sox clubhouse. Varitek, you may recall, had a little face-shoving scuffle with A-Rod back in 2004. Varitek said he had no idea whether Rodriguez would fit in with the current team, but that he knows Mike Lowell does. It’s pretty obvious where Varitek’s allegiance lies given the "Re-sign Lowell" sign and all.
- Gwen Knapp doesn’t see the Dodgers getting A-Rod for a couple of reasons. First, of course, there’s the price. Second, there’s a possibly shaky relationship with Scott Boras given last year’s unexpected opt-out by J.D. Drew.
- Mark Feinsand disagrees – his L.A. source says the Dodgers will make a push for him. The expected hiring of Joe Torre will basically be a non-factor in Rodriguez’s decision. Plan B for the Dodgers might be to sign Torii Hunter or Andruw Jones. That leaves Juan Pierre in left field or traded. Hey, it was a dumb signing at the time.
- Feinsand also has a source indicating that Rodriguez is hoping the Yankees will entertain the possibility of bringing him back. The Yankees, of course, are scarred by the Texas money lost and have pledged repeatedly that they will not be involved. We’ve seen this a million times – teams love fresh faces. Say A-Rod had played out his Texas contract to this point – do you think the Yankees would be in the mix for him then? If the Yankees don’t want A-Rod because he’s simply too expensive, that’s reasonable. But if they simply feel scorned by the opt-out, that’s emotion.
- Omar Minaya said on a conference call yesterday that he planned on discussing the team’s interest in A-Rod with David Wright, since Wright would have to move to second base to accomodate him.
- A new team is going after A-Rod aggressively.
Mets News and Notes
- The Mets haven’t played baseball since Saturday and the process have not only reshuffled the rotation going forward, but it’s also allowed Rick Peterson four additional bullpen sessions with missing link Oliver Perez. His grasp of the strike zone is in direct correlation with the Mets grasp on the division. The move will mean the Mets go with Perez and rookie Mike Pelfrey against the Braves at Shea over the weekend.
- One of David Wright‘s brothers, Stephen Wright, is a student at Virginia Tech University and had a class in the ill fated building that afternoon. There was a brief scare for the Mets’ third baseman as it was hard to track his brother down amidst the panic.
- Curt Schilling thinks Felix Hernandez has better tools then Dwight Gooden circa 1984.
- Sports Illustrated’s baseball blog "Fungoes", takes a pessimistic look around the NL East.

A-Rod Not Headed To Cubs
I spent a good amount of time speculating on possible new teams for Alex Rodriguez in 2008, especially the Cubs. I even assigned the Cubs’ chances at 15%. However, Rodriguez was fairly frank yesterday about that idea:
"Whoever writes that couldn’t be more wrong."
He loves the American League, the Yankees, and the nonstop media buzz. I do think Chicago is a top below New York and Boston for media insanity. We’ve got just two major newspapers here, and only Jay Mariotti can be counted on for something offensive on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, David Wright professed his willingness to move off third base if the Mets could acquire Rodriguez. The only alternative for Wright in ’08 would be left field, followed by first base after that.
