Duaner Sanchez

Quick Hits: Buchholz, Duaner Sanchez, Royals

By Tim Dierkes | April 11, 2011 at 2:00pm CDT

Links for Monday, as Angels number two prospect Tyler Chatwood prepares for his big league debut against the first place Indians…

  • The Red Sox were non-negotiable on getting two club options on Clay Buchholz's contract, reports Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.  Buchholz explained, "If it was me and I didn’t have a wife and a kid that I had to take care of, it might have been a decision that we would have thought about a little bit more."
  • Teams are locking up their best players earlier and placing increased emphasis on club options, writes Dave Cameron of FanGraphs, and the result may be that "the best players in the game are going to be significantly underpaid during their primes," while the free agent market could become even more inflated.
  • Reliever Duaner Sanchez signed with the Long Island Ducks, the team announced.  Sanchez hasn't pitched in the Majors since May of '09, his career derailed by a July '06 taxi cab accident.  His Ducks teammates include Ruddy Lugo, J.R. House, Lew Ford, and John Rodriguez.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star writes about how Royals owner David Glass changed his tightfisted ways upon hiring Dayton Moore as GM about five years ago.  Glass won't rule out keeping his talented wave of top prospects together on long-term deals "regardless of who their agent is."
  • Baseball America links: Conor Glassey chatted with potential top draft pick Anthony Rendon, while J.J. Cooper lists the youngest players in every league.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has details on the iPads Carl Crawford's agent Brian Peters distributed as a promotional tool early in the outfielder's free agency.  Though GM Theo Epstein said the iPad didn't change his evaluation of Crawford, he was compelled to return the favor with some Red Sox Beats By Dre headphones.  First Dr. Dre mention in MLBTR history?

Quick Hits: Marcum, Blanco, Peavy, Pujols

By Zachary Links | February 9, 2011 at 10:16pm CDT

Links for Wednesday night..

  • Brewers negotiator Teddy Werner told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (via Twitter) that the ability for Shaun Marcum to exceed the $4MM arb midpoint via incentives was key to making the deal happen.
  • Royals outfielder Gregor Blanco is out of options and on the bubble, writes Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
  • The Mets could learn a lot from the Rangers, who also experienced financial trouble recently, writes Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal.
  • Jake Peavy is eager to fulfill the expecations that the White Sox had for him when they traded for him in 2009, writes Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.
  • Agent Adam Karon has been promoted to partner and general counsel at Sosnick-Cobbe Sports, tweets ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  Karon represents Jonathan Singleton, Brent Morel, Jesse Biddle, Sean Coyle, Chris Heisey, and others.
  • Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com (via Twitter) points out that the Cardinals have an exclusive negotiating window with Albert Pujols from the end of the team's season to five days after the World Series.
  • The Cards should give Pujols the dollars he's looking for but only across seven years, says Jon Heyman of SI (via Twitter).
  • The White Sox are amongst the teams that did well this offseason, writes Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer.
  • Reliever Duaner Sanchez worked out for several clubs in Arizona today, though the Red Sox were not among them, tweets Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.  The veteran right-hander last pitched in the majors in 2009 when he made 12 appearances for the Padres.

Odds & Ends: Floyd, Looper, El Duque, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | February 22, 2010 at 1:16pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Cliff Floyd is currently doing TV work, writes Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post.
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson tweeted that the Nationals offered contracts to Chan Ho Park and Braden Looper.  Park went with the Yankees, while Looper told the Nats he's going in a different direction.
  • Orlando Hernandez is looking to get back in the game, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown.
  • Magglio Ordonez wants to play at least four more years, reports Tom Gage of the Detroit News.
  • FOX Sports' Jim Bowden questioned Justin Upton, Theo Epstein, Jon Daniels, Dayton Moore, Kevin Goldstein, and Dave Cameron about modern statistics, and it made for an amusing video segment.
  • Chico Harlan of the Washington Post talked to several Nationals players about their arbitration hearings, which were not enjoyable.  ESPN's Rob Neyer doesn't think it makes sense for players to attend.
  • Manny Ramirez believes this is his last year with the Dodgers, reports Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times.
  • Duaner Sanchez signed with the Mexico City Red Devils, reports Noroeste.  Though Sanchez is said to be throwing "an easy 90 mph," his shoulder is still not 100 percent.  He hopes to find his way back to the bigs after being released by the Padres in May of '09.  Thanks to Nick Collias for the translation.
  • Jesse Lund of the Twinkie Town blog has an excellent discussion with Twins assistant GM Rob Antony.  Antony provided details on the J.J. Hardy trade talks, and also noted that the Kevin Kouzmanoff rumors were "a little blown out of proportion."
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post doesn't buy the idea that the pressure will be off for Javier Vazquez as the Yankees #4 starter.
  • Regarding catcher A.J. Pierzynski entering his contract year, White Sox GM Kenny Williams told Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, "At some point, we'll check in with A.J. and his guys on expectations."
  • The Diamondbacks offered Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo around $1MM, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Mets Do Not Offer Arb To Any Free Agents

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2009 at 5:21pm CDT

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post (via Twitter) reports that, as, expected, the Mets will not offer arbitration to any of their remaining free agents — Carlos Delgado, Gary Sheffield, Fernando Tatis, or Elmer Dessens.  Delgado and Tatis are Type B free agents, while Sheffield and Dessens are unranked.

Hubbuch also tweets that New York is interested in re-signing Delgado to a one-year deal to keep first base occupied while prospect Ike Davis continues to develop.

Padres Claim Josh Wilson, DFA Duaner Sanchez

By | May 15, 2009 at 6:29pm CDT

MLB.com's Corey Brock took to his Twitter account this evening for a few announcements: The Padres have claimed infielder Josh Wilson and designated reliever Duaner Sanchez for assignment.

Wilson, 28, was DFA'd by the Diamondbacks this week after starting the season with a .231/.333/.269 line in 11 games.  He'll provide infield depth for the Padres, especially at shortstop.  We actually discussed the club's infield situation with Brock just one day ago.  The D'Backs, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, signed Abraham Nunez out of the independent league partially to compensate for the loss of infield depth.

Sanchez, a 29-year-old right-hander, went 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA, 2.36 WHIP and 2/8 K/BB ratio in 11 innings after being signed by the San Diego on March 15.  Those numbers were simply unacceptable, even for the 13-22 Padres.

Padres Sign Duaner Sanchez

By Steve Adams | March 15, 2009 at 1:27pm CDT

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres have signed Duaner Sanchez to a minor league deal.

Sanchez, 29, was released by the Mets on March 10, a move that saved them roughly $1.4MM of Sanchez’s $1.6875MM contract. He has a career record of 18-10 with a 3.91 ERA, but his fastball velocity has dropped off from the mid-90s to 87mph right now.

Sanchez maintains that he can still throw hard when needed:

"I know I have it," Sanchez told the New York Times on Monday of his velocity. "I’ve got no problem with that. I just don’t want to come out of the chute throwing hard. That’s not me. I want to make sure that when I reach back, I know I have it there."

Odds & Ends: Manny, Papelbon, Pudge, Peavy

By Tim Dierkes | March 12, 2009 at 9:51am CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • The Nationals remain interested in Duaner Sanchez, says Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post.
  • Yahoo’s Jeff Passan talked to Mark Prior.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post heard Manny Ramirez and Scott Boras consider the contract with the Dodgers a one-year deal with a safety net.  Sherman wonders if the Yankees and/or Mets could get involved depending on how Manny’s 2009 season plays out.
  • Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon commented about Manny to Chris Jones in the April issue of Esquire.  It’s a good article and there’s a lot more to it than the Manny comments.
  • Free agent catcher Ivan Rodriguez is working out at first base, according to Will Gonzalez of MLB.com.
  • The Padres have the third pick in the June draft.  Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune asks whether they’ll finally take a player with big upside.
  • Jake Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod seems to be writing off the Padres, in comments to Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune: "It’s tough with the Padres’ situation.  They are not very good and it looks like it is going to be another long year for them."
  • Marlins shortstop Robert Andino is out of options, so Mike Phillips of the Miami Herald says this is his audition.
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney says Mark Mulder’s audition is drawing closer and he’s throwing well.  Olney also says Luis Gonzalez is waiting by the phone.  For a look at the other remaining free agents, click here.

Duaner Sanchez Released

By Tim Dierkes | March 10, 2009 at 8:30am CDT

According to David Lennon of Newsday, Mets GM Omar Minaya announced that reliever Duaner Sanchez has been released.  The Mets did not feel Sanchez could be effective in the Majors.  I believe the Mets only have to pay him about $281K now since his contract was not guaranteed.  Sanchez, 29, posted a 4.32 ERA in 58.1 innings last year.  His fastball was down about 3.5 mph from 2005-06 levels.

Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post says the Nationals may have interest in Sanchez.

Duaner Sanchez On The Bubble

By Tim Dierkes | February 25, 2009 at 10:45am CDT

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes today about Mets reliever Duaner Sanchez, who could be released before April 1st.  In that case the Mets would only have to pay a quarter of his ’09 salary – they’d owe about $422K.  They could also shop Sanchez around; Sherman suggests they ask for Marlon Byrd or Marcus Thames.

Sanchez, 29, posted a 4.32 ERA and 6.79 K/9 for the Mets in 58.3 innings last year.  He’d previously missed over a year with two shoulder surgeries in a span of nine months.  His average fastball velocity was below 90 mph last year; he’d been above 93 in 2005-06.

Mike Gonzalez, Duaner Sanchez Avoid Arb

By Tim Dierkes | January 19, 2009 at 12:39pm CDT

According to the AP, relievers Mike Gonzalez and Duaner Sanchez have avoided arbitration and signed for ’09.

Gonzalez, closer for the Braves, will earn $3.45MM.  He’ll join Jose Valverde, Billy Wagner, and others on the free agent market after the season. Sanchez will make $1.6875MM with the Mets.
