Nationals Making A Run At Garland

By Mike Axisa | December 19, 2009 at 12:18pm CDT

The Nationals are making a "strong run" at free agent hurler Jon Garland according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. The righthander is looking for a three year deal, however the Nats would prefer to limit a contract to two years. Rosenthal also lists Jason Marquis and Doug Davis and possible targets for Washington.

GM Mike Rizzo confirmed the team's interest in Garland earlier this month, saying "He's one of the 10 names we've been talking about throughout the whole winter." The 30-year-old landed just one year and a guaranteed $7.25MM last offseason, so a three year deal may be a little too ambitious.

Orioles, Mariners Interested In Jason Marquis

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2009 at 4:35pm CDT

4:35pm: An Orioles official told MASN's Roch Kubatko not to get too excited about Marquis.  Kubatko says the Orioles are "more likely to sign a pitcher who's coming off injury to an incentive-ladened deal."  They're known to have interest in bringing Erik Bedard back, for example.

3:20pm: This week we learned that the Phillies, Mets, and Nationals are in on free agent starter Jason Marquis.  Today Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports add two American League clubs to the mix: the Mariners and Orioles.  Marquis' positive traits: he can eat innings, and he was third in baseball with a 55.6% groundball rate.

The FOX writers note that the Mariners are in on many free agent starters, including John Lackey, Ben Sheets, Doug Davis, and Jarrod Washburn.  This is the first I've heard of the Sheets connection.

Mariners Seek Starting Pitching

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 10, 2009 at 5:24pm CDT

The Mariners are looking for starting pitchers, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. John Lackey, Doug Davis and Jarrod Washburn are all on Seattle's list, according to Morosi.

Lackey, the top free agent starter, has been linked to the Mariners for a while. One consideration for GM Jack Zduriencik: the Angels already have the Mariners' first round selection in next year's draft, so the M's would only have to give up a 54th overall pick to sign Lackey, even though he's a Type A free agent. That would deprive the Angels of the chance to obtain two first rounders.

Washburn has been linked to the Twins and Brewers, but the Mariners could be a fit, too. He excelled in Seattle this year, pitching to a 2.64 ERA in 20 starts, though his peripherals were not as good as the low ERA suggests. We've seen Davis connected to the Mariners, too, though he hasn't pitched in the AL since 2003.

Mets Focused On Five Starting Pitchers

By Luke Adams 2 | December 9, 2009 at 7:02am CDT

The New York Mets have targeted five free agent starting pitchers, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman: John Lackey, Joel Pineiro, Jason Marquis, Jon Garland, and Doug Davis.

The Mets have yet to make any offers to free agent starters, but have met with Lackey's representation and are having an internal debate on whether to "go all-in" for the right-hander. With the club feeling that they're unlikely to invest heavily in a catcher or left fielder, some of the team's brass think they should spend their money on the best pitcher available, rather than saving it for other positions.

Of the five pitchers Sherman mentions, the Mets are only willing to offer more than three years to Lackey, and no more than two years to Marquis, Garland, and Davis.

Sherman’s Latest: Mets, Molina, Damon, Granderson

By Steve Adams | December 8, 2009 at 7:53am CDT

Here's a quick look into Joel Sherman's latest column:

  • The Mets need to add a starting pitcher, and given all of the already-volatile options in their rotation, they're likely to pursue someone more "vanilla" as Sherman describes. He names Kevin Millwood, Doug Davis, Jon Garland, and Jason Marquis. We've already seen that the O's may be closing in on Millwood today.
  • While acquiring Roy Halladay is a pipe dream, a full-on pursuit for John Lackey isn't quite as far-fetched, and Lackey would be every bit the No. 2 starter to complement Johan Santana that the previously mentioned options simply are not.
  • Minaya will meet with Lackey's representation but isn't confident; he'd prefer to wait for the price to come down, so as not to spend most of the Mets' available funds on one resource. If that price drops, though, suitors for Lackey will abound.
  • The Mets are confident that they can improve their pitching staff by improving their catching core; they're confident they can land Bengie Molina and believe he and Henry Blanco can help stabilize the staff.
  • If the Yankees acquire Curtis Granderson, they can use him as leverage against Johnny Damon. Adding Granderson will allow the Yanks to pose a "take it or leave it" offer to Damon, and remove some of the leverage Damon and Scott Boras may have. Sherman lists free agent alternatives to bring in should Damon leave in that scenario, including Mike Cameron or re-signing Xavier Nady.

Agent: “Multiple Clubs” Interested In Davis

By Steve Adams | December 7, 2009 at 1:14am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi reports that Steve Canter, agent for free agent lefty Doug Davis, states that multiple clubs, including the Brewers, are interested in his client.

Davis, 34, posted a 4.12 ERA through a league-leading 34 starts for the Diamondbacks in 2009. Canter's current sales pitch includes highlighting Davis' 22 quality starts in 2009, citing his postseason experience, and reminding that he's never seen time on the DL for an arm-related injury.

Still, Davis posted just a 6.46 K/9 ratio this season, while walking 4.56/9. Opponents hit .261 off the lefty, and his FIP on the season came out to 4.84.

Morosi specifically mentions a return to Milwaukee, where Davis enjoyed his time from 2003-2006, as a possibility. Are the Brewers, or any team for that matter, wise to bring in Davis on a multi-year deal despite his shaky peripheral stats? It seems possible that in a market that doesn't feature much depth in terms of starting pitching, Davis may find himself with a nicer contract than some would expect based on numbers alone.

Diamondbacks Decline Arb On Free Agents

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2009 at 6:31pm CDT

MLB.com's Steve Gilbert tweets that Arizona will not be offering arbitration to free agents Doug Davis, Scott Schoeneweis or Chad Tracy.  Davis (a Type B) is the only ranked free agent of the trio.  Gilbert blogged yesterday that the D-Backs were likely to pass on making Davis an offer since the team didn't want to risk bringing him back in 2010 at a higher salary.

Discussion: Doug Davis

By Mike Axisa | November 27, 2009 at 3:47pm CDT

There's only so many top tier pitchers on the free agent market every year, so naturally many teams will spend the winter sifting through the leftovers after the big market clubs have had their fill. One such pitcher this offseason is the 34-year-old Doug Davis, who once upon a time (2005) was third in the NL with 208 strikeouts.

Davis is the definition of an innings eater, making at least 33 starts in five of the last six years, with the one exception being 2008, when he missed six weeks while getting treatment for thyroid cancer. Aside from taking the ball every five days, the other thing Davis does well is put runners on base. He's had at least a 1.50 WHIP every year since 2006 (he led the big leagues with 103 walks this year), but he gets by because his groundball (1.29 GB/FB) and strikeout (6.67 K/9) rates are passable.

Nothing screams back-end starter in the NL quite like like Doug Davis' resume, though there's still value in his durability and the bulk innings he provides. Davis is a Type-B free agent, though it's unlikely the Diamondbacks will offer him arbitration after he made $8.75MM in 2009. Considering he'll likely get nothing more than a one-year deal, do you see any fits for the lefty? Maybe a return to Milwaukee, or a stint in spacious CitiField?

Mariners Rumors: Matsui, Lackey, Harden

By Luke Adams 2 | November 12, 2009 at 5:41pm CDT

In his latest article, Larry Stone of the Seattle Times examines some names that have been linked to the Mariners, and speculates on how likely each player is to end up in Seattle. Let's take a look at some of his thoughts….

  • If Hideki Matsui were to leave New York, Stone doesn't expect the designated hitter to sign with the Mariners. Seattle would prefer a DH that could play the field occasionally, which Matsui probably can't do.
  • How aggressively the Mariners pursue John Lackey will depend on the market. If Lackey could be had at a reasonable price, Stone anticipates the team making "a big push."
  • Rich Harden heading back west to the AL West "has legs," according to Stone. He views Harden as a worthwhile gamble this winter, and one the Mariners could look into.
  • If the team's pursuit of Lackey, Harden, or other higher-profile pitching targets fell through, Doug Davis could be a cheaper option.
  • Among the free agents Stone doesn't see the Mariners being major players for: Jason Bay, Orlando Hudson, and Jarrod Washburn.
  • Stone also doesn't buy into the Lyle Overbay rumors.
